I am trying to root my Vibrant, but when I hold down both ends of the volume rocker and power the device on I get stuck on a screen that says "Downloading..... Do not turn off Target".
Is my phone actually downloading something from the web? I left it on like this all night and nothing seemed to have changed.
If it is actually downloading something should I move to an area with better 3G reception while trying to root?
Any help on this subject is IMMENSELY appreciated.
Thanks!
It shouldn't be downloading anything. Unless I'm mistaken. The phone should just be installing the zip that's on the phone.
Thanks for the reply Rick!
to quote the Root your Vibrant Guide:
"7. In Recovery menu select 'Reinstall Packages' (use vol_down then power to select)"
Does this mean I do not need to do this? I put the renamed file "update.zip" onto the phones internal memory....
Am I missing something?
Unplug the usb cable and try again.
or alternatively, issue a "adb reboot recovery" command from ADB.

Unfortunately Windows is not properly identifying the Vibrant, and it seems that ADB is not detecting it as a result either.... I'll keep at it.

Did you turn on USB Debugging in the setting menu?
I know it's a stupid question, and I'm not trying to call you stupid, but it is a commonly missed step in getting ADB recognition.
really dude there are plenty of answers you could have found for this with a little searching but your in download mode yellow triangle sign with the android guy digging right? well unlplug the charger from the phone hold both volume up and down and hold power while turning on the phone and then the recovery should pop up use the volume keys to select reinstall packages then select it with the power button then reboot and now your rooted.... you should have searched for this instead of posting a thread and this is not development it should have been posted in the general section and if you cant do this then you should try to root your phone in the first place but if you need a easier way to do i have a theory of a one click method using rom manager from the market that should work

Hey guys,
I've been reading a lot of the threads and it's pretty awesome how helpful everyone is. Could someone try and help me?
Here's what I've done. I started with a new Evo.
**Rooting Method**
-downloaded PC36IMG.Zip & evorecovery from Toastcfh
-Copied PC36IMG.Zip to SD card on phone
-While in bootloader, I started the update and rebooted
-It powered on, I removed the PC36IMG.Zip file from the SD card
-I powered it off and back on.
**Auto Recovery Method**
-I donated money for the "ROM Manager" by ClockworkMod and installed
-Then I selected "reboot into Recovery" and Powered off the phone
-I powered back up and nothing seemed to be different about the phone. I don’t get how I’m supposed to know it’s rooted.
ANYWAYS THAT’S THE LEAST OF MY PROBLEMS NOW
I did the Auto Recovery Method steps again and now IT WON’T TURN ON NO MATTER WHAT MODE.
I tried:
Taking out the battery, taking out the SD card, tried starting it in bootloader (vol down + power).
IS MY PHONE A BRICK NOW?
If so how can I fix this and if I can’t fix it, how do I return it without showing I voided my warranty? I’d prefer fixing it if I can.
1st check and make sure your batt. Didn't die

if your phone doesn't doesn't turn on at all, there is no way to tell you voided the warranty. However, it is extremely difficult to brick these phones if you don't flash gsm roms/radios.
Make sure the battery isn't dead.
yes, and always do this stuff with the charger plugged in when flashing roms.
Does the Orange(not full)/ Green(Full) charing LED come on at the top of the phone when it is plugged in? If so charge it til green and try again.
moved to general forum.
so it won't even show the htc evo 4g bootscreern? try plugging it in the computer and try adb shell on it with EVO-recovery.zip to see if it connects. If it does, reboot recovery.
Use the RUU..
No lights at all. It's like there isn't a battery in the phone.
Someone suggested the battery might have went out. Shouldn't it still turn on or show an orange light with the plug. I think it should still turn on even without a battery when it's plugged in. ??
HOLD UP!!
WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME i TOOK THE BATTERY OUT AND WHEN i GOT HOME i PUT IT BACK IN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. I STILL NEED TO FIX THE WHOLE ROOT THING.
How do I know if I rooted it (part 1)?

Try to boot the phone into recovery using the evo recover.zip in part one
Rename or remove the pci.img w.e from your sd
Turn the phone off hold down vol. Down and power let it check click down on volume then click power button and boot into recovery then.....
download it unzip it onto your desktop open it up right click on recovery.bat if you on Windows click run. as admin if the screen goes up and just goes away then just click on recovery.bat normally you may have to click on it a few times if it runs and doesn't boot into rec. The 1st time.
The reason it didn't boot is because the "internal memory" had to be "reset", the only "real" way to do that is to take out the battery and wait about 1 minute, then snap it back in and boot up. - Correct me if I'm wrong about that.
So... My theory would be that if It had not needed to been reset to boot up, then It didn't Root... ??
Ok, that sounds logit. But, if you can entertain my questions just a little longer?
What is the rooting going to do to my phone? And what is the NAND Uprotect going to do?

Install Terminal Emulator from the Market (free). Launch the terminal, and enter 'su' and press enter. You should be at a root prompt (#). Confirm by typing 'id'; It should return 'uid=0(root) gid=0(root)'

I guess you just answered your own question.
Really, though, this question has been answered a hundred times on this very forum. Maybe people are tired of new threads popping up constantly asking other people to take time to do research for people that obviously can't be bothered to do it for themselves. Search first, then ask if you can't find an answer...preferably in a relevant existing thread instead of creating 10 new ones. The other users of this forum aren't here to be your free research monkeys.
...and again, insulting people isn't going to make them want to help you. If you want people to be friendly and considerate you need to give that back...it's a 2-way street. Nobody here is being paid.
*prepares to be flamed by the OP...again*

you can too use adb without root, how do you think people locked out of hardware recovery are even getting rooted in the first place? (and dont say one click root cause if you knew anything then youd also know that program uses adb as well)
the only thing you have to do to get adb to work is turn on usb debugging and have good drivers installed.

I usually find posts like these and still help out with a link if its already on my subscribe list but your just an ass for the way youve gone about it, sorry not everyone works within your mighty time frame

If your phone is on the phone != computer screen and you can't enter download mode via the volume keys - you're bricked. You can't fix it unless you can enter download mode, and some versions of the phone you can't enter download or recovery modes via any keypresses. Since you're on the phone != computer screen, you also can't connect to the phone with ADB - so you're boned like a few other people here.
See this other thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764360
And this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771247
And next time, be patient and don't act like a **** when people don't reply. Not everyone knows your particular situation or can give you a solution on a silver platter.

ok thanks. i was just frustrated and nervous but tmobile is sending me another one. this phone was on vibrant rom and rooted if they find out is there going to be a issue? i am thinking that only way to get back is flashing stock odin again and once they do that it wont be rooted again. so i should be good. what do you think.
Yes should flash the original rom cuz if Tmo find out they are going to make u paid the original price of the phone not the discount or insurance price either. Reason I know cuz I know several people that work with Tmo corporate store not affiliate stores.

You have to have fastboot unselected before it will work. I'm looking into rooting my wife's mt4g, and that took me forever to figure out.

Please use the term quick boot when referring to the reboot option that does not fully restart the phone.
Use 'fastboot' to refer to the low level utility / protocol that allows image (ROM,etc) flashing via USB

No problem (clicky the thanks button ). I was actually leaning toward this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225. I'm still trying to determine the difference between it and the one you linked. The main purpose will not be really to flash any roms (she likes the stock), but to resolve some minor issues she has w/ her device. For example, her market fc's every time it updates - it's getting old to have to uninstall updates before she can even access the market. So I'm wanting to root so I can use TB to freeze the market updater.

Aha...see this is the stuff I need to learn - I simply used that term b/c it's what was in the reboot option. So it sounds like "fastboot" is the same as Downloading mode on my vibrant, correct? In other words, roms can be flashed via either clockwork or a usb connection to a computer while the device is in fastboot...?
I need to find a tutorial that explains the basics for the mt4g. It's a pretty different animal than my vibrant. I'm creating my own flashable mods for my vibrant, yet I pick up my wife's mt4g and I'm back to square one. Fruustratting!
If you already flashed it, Power Off > Hold Vol Down + Power until booted > Vol Down to recovery and select

hey i'am successfully rooted now with stock ROM! with the link i gave you! i think you should use the one i gave you its more detailed that the one you linked to me...theres a few things missing there in your link.
Don't be decieved by the title.
My problem is that I literally can't seem to figure out what I need to do to flash:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166948
The Dorimanx rom.
I've downloaded it. but how do I flash it on the phone.
What I don't understand is that my first rom, Dandiest, came with a package, had an installer and everything. Installer.exe, DAF.exe, the things I needed to flash it.
I downloaded the Dorimanx rom, and I couldn't find any of those things there.
Nor could I find a simple explanation on how to get it on, probably because it is assumed you know what you're doing before getting it.
I've read at least half a dozen threads on how to, etc. and I still am absolutely lost. It's just very confusing, even though I have actually read the "first flashing rom" guide thing.
Call me stupid, but I literally just do not understand.
lol, calm down .. and welcome aboard.
There is no reason for us to call you stupid, we were all noobs at a point in time.
And (I'm certain) you did your part of reading and searching.
All what you have to do is follow this tut by me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16528026&postcount=7
But swap step 8 with your ROM (obviously )
Over time, you won't need this.

You are welcome, I am glad I was able to help you.
Swap is an (sort of) extension to the RAM, and not to your internal.
After flashing, you'll have more than 150 for apps, yes.

Do you have the required drivers? if not, you can install them by pressing the "Drivers" button on the HD2 Toolkit.

Which exe are you alluding to? Within the toolkit? If memory serves most options should bring up another window that you need to go through. Make sure you've started the toolkit as administrator (right click). And if its not connecting properly you may just need to disconnect and reconnect.

Indeed, what .exe? is it the toolkit? if yes, then you must be doing something wrong. Because the toolkit has a GUI, not texted. Make sure you have installed it, and run it as an admin.

Not the toolkit, the drivers. You told me to download the drivers.
when I execute both the exe's, All I get is a CMD window, and it closes back down once it runs for approx half a second.
I was asking if that was correct, for installing the drivers.

I think that's allright.
To check if drivers are already there - enter bootloader mode (power + VolDown) and after that plug it via USB to your PC. If you hear sound of connecting device, i say its ok.
You won't have access to data on your phone, it won't show as a removable disc. In my case "My devices" shows my phone as "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM". So if you hear that sound, just go to another step, to MAGLDR install. It should work.
I use this ROM myself, and its awesome. Hope this helps

I reconnected it into a diff port, now windows auto installed some HTC USB connect stuff. now it does recognize it. This was the required stuff?

power + voldown gets me into the red/green/blue screen. Surely that isn't the bootloader.

Glad You like it. Remember that it is still developed, what means that some problems may, and probably will ocurr. If so, report at ROM thread(i see that you achieved 10-post level ). With my set, i haven't had any problems, i think im gonna wait with upgrade
Cheers

As far as I know i'm using the very latest ROM. And haven't had any problems so far. It's absolutely lightning fast. even though I have no idea if I did it right with the memory selecting stuff. I just did the 150+5mb. And suppose that is correct.
But yeah, zero problems. lightspeed. so im absolutely pleased. But I suppose if your rom is working fine.
Never change something that is working correctly.
Trying to get my V20 rooted I figured since it's been awhile I'd try and ask hopping not to get my head ripped off about rooting this beast. I would greatly appreciate some help. Tried in the past failed miserably.

Before copy twrp.img to internal storage, make sure the name is exactly twrp.img (it MUST be all lower case).
SuperSU file must be copied to memory card.

I & a few others used this a few times, the still pics might be better since it gives you time to reread any step. I put some tips in the comment section. It's basically be the manual dirtycow way (thread with the 120+ pages).

Sorry should have added this is during the boot up stage..here is a copy & paste I keep handy:
While the device is powered off, press and hold Vol - and Power button. When you see the LG logo quickly release only the power button and re-press and hold the power button (Never let go of the Vol - button) This will boot you into the LG Factory reset screen. ONLY USE THIS METHOD IF YOU HAVE TWRP INSTALLED!!!!! OTHERWISE YOU WILL FACTORY RESET YOUR DEVICE!!!!! Choose yes to both options and you will be rebooted into TWRP. TWRP intercepts this command and ignores the factory reset part.

When you state follow this guide ( i have to say the LG dev community is kinda of rude and does not even explain anything to new comers from other devices...) Do you mean i need to follow every step or some steps this is why i say the LG Dev community is all over the place nothing is set in stone there is not one way to do like most Samsung users are used to. I would hope that you could elaborate a little more if you are offering to help.
I am not trying to be a jerk i'm just use to nicer dev community. I have done dev work... I have not had any other device besides Samsung for the longest time and i and will be switching back once the S8 or note 8 comes out.
To get me but i would like to root this device and i would like more then a point here to do it because you don't have some time to explain what needs to be done....
Again i am not trying to be rude just trying to learn the process on the LG dev side... Do not want to brick my device if i can prevent it.

Yes every step i am new as well and i got to say this was the most complex toot i have ever done. But every single comand bust be typed.. Ignore the $ sign. Install sdk not the smaller version of adb.
