[SOLVED] Settings/Customization does not stick after a reboot - Windows Mobile

My ROM boots for the first time fine but after a soft reset, either A. it freezes or B. starts the customization process again. Any ideas? Thanks

Recmod NTFConfig.dll in Notification Enhancement EXT package.

Check your startup folder; it sounds like welcome.lnk or something similar is not being deleted after the first boot. There may be some other links that aren't being deleted to kick-start customization (couldn't tell you what they are, but it should be obvious). The next thing you need to do is figure out why the startup folder isn't being cleaned out. You must be leaving something out, or maybe a provxml isn't running properly.

I just found the issue. It won't bootup with an SD card on the phone.
After it boots up its fine, But everytime you soft reset you must remove SD card. Any ideas?
Thanks for all your help!

Are you cooking in xda_uc, or something similar? It sounds like it's looking for something on the sd card (what, I don't know). Again, check your startup folder, the init queue or the bootlauncher queue.

And just a small tip: In the future try to change only a few things at a time, and then test your ROM. This really helps to minimize running into bugs like this. Happy cooking (^^,)

No xda_uc. I do have xda_uc related stuff on the card but nothing xda_uc related on the ROM. The ROM seems to corrupt itself if I boot with the SD card in.

Thanks for the advice Sherlock (kidding)
I haven't added anything to this ROM except Manila 2016 so...

Try scanning your sd card; perhaps it's corrupted, and that's causing the problem.

I did this and to my surprise, no more corruption. Thanks a million man!

I've had a corrupted flash drive crash my computer on more than one occasion, so I'm not surprised that an sd card could eff up a phone.

The weird thing is that it was only my ROM and nobody else that had flashed my ROM had that problem. It didn't crash Energy either.
I will reflash and see if I get the same problem again.

It's confirmed! Fixed it by scanning my SD Card. Thank you!

You should probably just scan the card regularly. Hell, I do it every day. Before I started doing it (maybe a year ago), my card would crash once a month (if I was lucky), forcing me to reformat it. SD Cards are cheap crap, and it's really easy to corrupt them.

Error when opening programs. Irritating the hell our of me!!

I'm not sure what is going on but I keep running into this problem. Everyday I will run into this problem at least one or twice and it is irritating the hell out of me.
When I try to open programs I get an error saying
"The file <program name. cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file"
I think it is related to my MicroSD card because only the programs I installed on it are affected or the programs that I have transferred the DLL to the MicroSD are affected.
The only way I can correct this is soft reset the phone.
What is going on???? Somebody please help me.

This might be one of those "missing SD card" issues, whereby the SD card disappears from time to time for no apparent reason.
There's a registry hack in the Hermes Wiki that sets some SD card related keys - it's supposed to cure the problem, but as I've never experienced it myself, I couldn't say for sure.
Go search the Wiki and see what you think...
HTH,
Mark.
I tried looking on WIKI but I can't find anything about this.

You are right. It is a MicroSD problem. But unfortunately, it seems there isn't a fix for it yet.
True, it's related to your SD card. I had it randomly happening as long i was running WM5, however, since i've upgraded to WM6 2.5 Black, it seems to be gone.
If you don't want to upgrade or already have WM6, i suggest you install your proggies in your phone memory.

my main memory is full already so I have no choice but to install in the SD card. I don't want to install WM6 because I don't have time to install everything again.

New Micro SD CARD- Transfer

Hi Guys, just bought meself a new 16gb micro sd card.
How can I transfer or make an image of the old card to the new one? I have many installed applications on my old card, I don't want to go through the daunting process of having to reinstall every single application.
Any help would be appreciated.
Copy the contents of the old card to your computer, then write them back to the new card.
Everything should work just the way it did before.
as above, just copy everything to the new card, , , just make sure you have hidden and system files visible before you copy/paste them.

Although you can transfer an image from one card to another its really not recommended for the stable running of the device especially after a ROM flash.

Moving your stuff from one card to another has absolutely no influence on how the device runs. Unless the new card is defective, of course
Thanks guys, am abroad at the moment. The moment I get home, I'll try as you suggested.
Thanks again

That's just wrong!
You may get away with it but all settings and associations will be for the previous ROM and could be totally inappropriate!
WTF, we are on about moving stuff from one card to another.
Nothing to do with ROMs!
Your storage card is only for storage - ie it does not matter if you copy your files from (lets say) a smaller SD to a bigger one.
possible complications: having programs installed on the sd card.... here you could get error messages when you take the card out for the copy process. Nevermind them though as you take the card out, do your copying and then shove the new card back in....
after that just do a safety reboot and you should be fine

Put my old card into the comp, copied everything, pasted into a folder on the desktop then dropped it all onto my new card, put it back in the phone, turned it on and everything works fine

The OP mentioned installed apps on a mem card and excuse me but that DOES have something to do with ROMs.
Now you are wrong!
And before this goes any further you all believe what you want and do what you want because there's none so blind as those who will not see.
I shall not be posting further after those sort of comments, hollinshea!

No! A storage card is just that, a disk with a filesystem and files on it. If you copy the same files onto another card, there's no way the system can even see anything has changed, apps or no apps. It's not about deleting/adding stuff, just having exactly the same data.
We don't "believe" anything - it's just how it is.

apps disappeared?? like legit all of them

look here, my phone still has like zero memory for new apps but i have none and i tried that app id fixer under the other option in the recovery menu and it took about 10 minutes and fixed nothing.
what was the last thing you did before this happened, what rom are you using, are you using an apps2sd ext? we need some more specifics here to help you.

Have you tried removing the sd and putting it back? >_> always best to try that first lol and have you tried rebooting?
Retardedly obvious solution: You have apps2sd on and you removed the sd card. So your apps aren't on the phone, because... they aren't on the phone. Put it back in. Reboot.
Less obvious solution: You have apps2sd on and you pulled the sd card while it's on and everything went crazy because you did something stupid, like removing the sd card when all your apps are stored on it. Then you put it back in and it's being all weird. Again, a reboot will hopefully fix it.
You're ****ed solution: You corrupted your sd card and or ext2 partition. Try to repair it in recovery. Otherwise, format and start over.

A2SD - Help needed

I just posted this in the "General" forum. I take it that it's not a good thing to remove your SD card when you're running A2SD. I wanted to see if my apps were "really" running on the card, so I figured I'd just pop it out, see if the apps worked or not, then pop it back in. Well, the apps didn't work, but after re-inserting the card, I don't see any of the apps I had installed.
Anyone know how to fix this?
General is the proper place for this thread. Please avoid double posting threads in the future, especially in the inappropriate forum.
Restart the phone.
And, no, it's not a good idea to remove the SD card while running Apps2SD. You can seriously corrupt your ext partition that way, forcing you to reformat everything.

Thanks for the helpful reply, Tkirton. I ended up getting my icons back using "a2sd install", but they weren't working right. Forced shutdown of almost everything when I would try to launch them.
I just did a factory reset wipe and am reinstalling PlainJaneT2 right now. If they're still jacked up, I'll assume that I corrupted the ext partition and just re-do everything. Then I'll be smart and immediately create a backup!
Thanks again.

need help: about to smash the phone on the wall

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
need help. this is quickly going from my favorite phone to a PIECE OF CRAP I WANT TO SMASH ON THE WALL.
there's a thread i made yesterday. short version after rebooting the phone none of the apps in the sd card were accessible, the phone couldn't mount the sd card, and nothing would install in market. i flashed new roms, restored nandroid backups, nothing would fix the issue. finally narrowed it down to some file on the sd card. deleted all the files from the sd card and restored my last good nandroid and got the phone running, just had to re-install my apps.
i've spent all day installing all my apps (200+). everything was working just fine again. until i decide to reboot the phone. and now I'M BACK TO THE SAME ISSUE. none of the sd card apps work, in settings if i try to unmount the sd card i get a FC, switchpro can't change the mount status (says updating status but never changes the icon, so it's either unmounted or mounted, but wont change it), and nothing will install in the market.
i put back my original memory card (that i used yesterday in my testing) and the phone worked fine again. i installed root explorer (was on sd card, now to the phone). put my memory card back.
i am able to browse the sd card with root explorer. gallery sees the images from the sd card. beautiful widgets sees the skin files in the sd card. but the OS wont run any of my apps that are in the sd card and wont let me install anything.
i'm 100% if i delete all the files from the sd card and boot again, everything will work....but what the hell is causing this? i dont have any experimental/alpha apps that would do any damage after being installed. just a few apps and many games.
from my end it feels like there is a file that gets created at one point, that after rebooting the phone makes it so the phone can't mount the sd card, thus not able to install apps, run sd card apps, etc.
please give me some guidance here. i can't use my phone if i can't isntall apps!!!
i got so pissed almost smashed it
i'm using MetroDroid 1.0, rooted (nand too), customized matted blues theme. keep in mind the problem does not go away with a fresh install of the rom, or with a nand restore of cm6....i'm pretty sure it's down to a file issue within the sd card?
There is a file or app being installed on the sd card that is causing the sd card to corrupt.

you really need 200 apps?
****, i'd say therein lies the root of your problems...
have you tried installing each app one at a time, and rebootung after each one? Eventually you'll run into the same issue, but at least then you'll know which app is causing it.

That's a lot of apps to go through to find the culprit.
I would try reformatting your card. Then go about installing your apps again. Besides that I have no idea, could be an app or a retarded lemon of a phone.

that's the thing. yesterday i reformatted in-phone and i also formatted in the computer. then put the files back on (made a backup first) and this happened after installing the apps. i think i rebooted maybe 3 times in the process of installing all the apps today. the last reboot was only to test the theory that on MetroDroid data only works if you reboot with Wi-Fi off. so i really wasn't expecting the whole thing to stop working again!
EDIT: where in the memory card exactly are the app files?

really? thank you for your helpful post. i posted a very detailed and civil thread yesterday and where were you with helpful information? nowhere. and where is your helpful information now? nowhere. so why even come in the thread if you're not going to help?
@toast - thanks for editing the OP. i dont usually make the pissed off kind of threads but this time it served its purpose. the last two days i had a very well written, detailed thread explaining everything asking for help. i renamed it several times. bumped it 2-3 times. all i got was two responses. i post this one with profanity in the title and look at how many answers already. some of which seem to be pointing me somewhere right hopefully!
it's very frustrating to see picture threads and mod threads get useful (and useless) comments every minute and threads asking for help (i've seen this happen with my own threads in the past and many others) get ignored. specially considering by the time I get to ask for help i've spent hours trying to fix it on my own and researching before asking here.
-----------------
VOODOOTRIP i put back most of the files that were in the memory card prior to reformatting it. anyways i installed all the apps again today after that and haven't reformatted yet (what's the point?) so the apps are in the sd card. just need to figure out how to get the phone to access the card!
EDIT: i renamed all the folders in the sd card (without reformatting or deleting anything) and booted into the phone. was able to mount/unmount the card and install apps from market. so it is a file in there...now to figure out which one!
You can access the card from root exp. or from Astro? ie it's still showing the extension right? When was the last time it was working properly? What rom were you on when it first started happeneing? Have you downloaded any non market apps since then? Are all your roms on current update? You said you have tried both a sense and AOSP rom right?
i was able to narrow it down....it's a file within .androidsecure...so now i have to sort through 131 files in there. but at least there's a light at the end of the tunnel!
with .androidsecure renamed i am able to install apps, mount/unmount. etc. so it's got to be something in there that is loading when the phone loads...i wonder what?
i'll update when i find out in case anyone comes across this problem too.

see info above (quickly....yes, no (astro is in sd card), about three days ago, MetroDroid, since then couldn't download/install anything, everything is updated, tried both CM6.0 and this rom. but see above. since problem is a file in the .androidsecure folder, whether i was wiping and going to cm6 or back to sense that file wouldn't be modified by the recovery wipe correct?
I know the problem its the 200 apps or one app not getting along with another app. You are the first person that I have come across that has that many apps 200+ apps is a crazy amount of apps.

well there are 131 asec files in that folder. so at least 131 apps + the ones on the phone memory.
but why the surprise with the amount of apps? isn't that why we get 16gb and 32gb memory cards?
the problem file was
se.nena.nenamark1-1.asec
for the benchmark NenaMark
that was the last app i had installed before i overclocked my phone into rebooting. and that's when the problems starting. hindsight is always 20/20
new development. i installed another app and rebooted and the same error happened. NenaMark was off from the android_secure folder but i was back to 131 files. i removed some other apps and booted again and everything is fine. so it looks like 130 .asec files are the limit? at 131 files I get the same problem?
moved 130 of the 131 files back and the phone ran fine. put that one file in, and problems came back. removed the file and all is well again.
I was having problems with my phone and once I accidents ran a check disk via win 7 it found and fixed some corruption, also my symptoms went away. In fact even my video recordings loom much better.
