go to http://www.samsungapps.com/about/onPc.as to download Samsung Kies....it's a Desktop Manager for your phone(like BB Desktop Manager). It has an option right in the software to tether. Will even auto set up your connection for you.
In addition it will even allow you to sync contacts with outlook, save them to your PC, transfer media, sync music/pics/videos, convert video, etc
Not There
Not available in USA
Download the UK version. Select Galaxy S. Set location as UK and choose English as the language, that is unless you speak/write a different language . Change USB to connect via Kies.
This is better than the free PdaNet and such as you can get to secure sites.

The link I poseted takes you straight to the download page. all you have to do is hit "Download Kies" and you're good to go.

Good point.
However, it takes a couple of minutes to root the phone and you only have to do that once (as opposed to installing drivers on every computer you wish to tether). Not to mention the fact that you can't tether an iPad or other device that isn't running Windows if you are using one of the non-root methods.

Well... It's on code.google.com so it's easy to make that logical leap and say it's "from" Google (they provide the group space to develop and distribute it). I don't know who created it but it works. There is at least one bug (issues when closing it down) but that will be fixed soon I am sure.
The easiest way is just to use Ubuntu lol. It works out of the box without changing any settings. Just put your phone in debugging mode.
Just wanted to add this as some one who keeps their phone constantly plugged in. In the Applications>USB section of the settings menu you can have it ask you how your prefer to connect ect time you plug in.
Fantastic! Didn't even bother to download Kies before, didn't think i needed it. Was debating if it was worth spending money to buy a stupid app just to get tethering. Now i don't need to.

I'm not sure what Access Control is.

Kernel Version:

SBF'd and OTA updated last night before installing the ROM.
I should mention, it appears to work otherwise, but again, I will check later. My laptop (corporate assigned) cannot connect to AdHoc networks, so this would be amazing to get working.
+1 EtherBoo. Same exact error, ROM and Kernel version.

Well, yes ... you guys get a message that "access control" is disabled because of a missing kernel-feature. "CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_MAC" is missing!
See: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/FAQ
So yes, "access control" is unavailable for your devices.
But what do you get instead:
1) Infrastructure mode - your phone acts like "a real" accesspoint!
2) Strong WPA-encryption instead hacked-in-seconds WEP-encryption.
Your choice!
BTW ... if you want the access-control back install a custom kernel (if possible) which has above option/feature enabeld. Also include CONFIG_PROC_FS, CONFIG_IKCONFIG, and CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PRO so that the phone dumps the kernel-config to /proc/config.gz and the app will be able to detect it correctly!
Custom Kernels are not possible on the X, and most likely won't be, since it doesn't look like anyone with the know-how is still working on hacking the locked boot loader.
This is my last Moto product because of it (even though the Atrix is making me wet my pants).
I was mistaken, it is using Infrastructure mode. As I mentioned, I wasn't able to test at the time, and thought Access Control was Infrastructure Mode.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And who cares about Access Control? It's not necessary now that we have strong WPA/WPA2 encryption, and of course a true AP with the Droid X and Droid 2.
Besides, I believe Access control relies on the MAC Address which can be easily spoofed since it's sent as plain text. You guys rock!!!
My wife just got a D2 Global. I have a DX and I am trying to get her a wireless tether setup. I also ket the same kernel message. Has anybody had luck with the 3G hot spot? I could use some help! Thanks.

You do understand that the "error" message has nothing to do with the normal usage of the program. It will work just fine even if you get that error. You just cannot use the "Access Control" portion of the program which was a way to limit the devices that could connect to the phone. However, as stated by other members, you don't need access control at all. Just use WPA encryption and a strong password. This is a more secure connection than using WEP and access control.
Thanks for the heads up
Do I need to turn 3g mobile hotspot on for wireless tether to work? I see the network on my laptop, but keeps saying it can't connect. Any tricks? Thanks!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is exciting about web access to the market? Is it supposed to be better than our regular market app?
The Hotness! Logged in. See all of my apps. Can download apps from the website will sync immediately into your phone!
Way to step up android!!
You can browse on your computer, then install the apps OTA, so to speak. Easier to link to apps you like, install them without taking the phone out of your pocket, for example, that kind of stuff. It's just more convenient in some situations.
Well, I just thought of something.... does it work with custom ROM's? I just downloaded something on the net, and it hasn't really downloaded on Bionix V. Maybe I should go on over to the Bionix V thread and ask.
Unfortunately, it is so pointless right now because it can't function correctly over wifi only* connection. It just lists it in my market place under "My Downloads" and not actually installing the application.
I am using wifi only, because 3g is cut off in my office building.

Well I'm pretty sure all developers keep the fingerprint as the old eclair build for proper regular market access. Obviously I have no idea if this website would react differently. Who's to say it's not just as problematic on stock builds though? It is a brand new site after all.
Edit: Well I tried it out for the fun of it. It shows the download trying to take place on my phone, but the progress bar does nothing. Then again, I get this fairly often with the regular market too.
I'm picking up my phone tomorrow. I was wondering if any of the tethering apps work with or without root on this phone yet. I know the more popular one requires a kernel with netiptables enabled. I'm not sure if the default kernel supports this or not.

I got the Barnacle Wifi tether working without much challenge thanks to the Devs in the other threads. Me either, this is my first Android phone. I did a search for wifi hotspot in the AppBrain market and it came up. My limited test with it was good. Used the APN setup from other threads and rooted the phone, also described elsewhere. Then downloaded the APK and installed it. A fairly straight forward process.
Problem with PDANet is the huge cost when I'd only really use the feature when traveling. How is barnacle wifi? Does it support encryption?
I am using a basic WEP key, not sure what you want out of the encryption. Better to check developers web site, I know there are some challenges but it is a little out of my league without spending a long time reading about it.
Well WEP/WPA/WPA2 type of encryption so someone doesn't steal my limited data. Does it support WPA/2 by the way? WEP is pretty easily cracked these days, but it is better than nothing at all.
I've just rooted my phone now what can I do? Can someone point me in the direction of some good roms

Well I'd say one of the best things that comes from a rooting your phone is Wireless Teather
https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether&feature=search_result
You can "teather" your phones internet connection to other WiFi devices, like a laptop or portable device.
Also, overclocking your phone (making the processor run faster) is pretty sweet:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.antutu.CpuMasterFree&feature=search_result
Not to be a jerk but it's "tether" not "teather". SetCPU is a great overclocking app and is free if you get it from XDA but overclocking will only work on kernels that support it.

Could you please explain what exactly tethering is?
Sent from my GT540 using XDA App
Tethering is allowing your computer or laptop to use your phone's internet connection. Depending on the app and type of tethering you might also be able to use things like a nintendo DS, tablets, etc. Most game consoles can also be tethered but not directly, you have to share the connection through a computer.
P.S. the only reason I corrected the spelling is to make searches easier, not to be a jerk.
Search market for AdFree , install and update(run) it.
It should rid ur phone from all kinds of advertisements , in-app and browser ones too, def a must have

You flash the gapps zip the same way you flash a normal ROM.
does overclocking make your device hotter?
It can yes, it can also shorten the lifespan of the phone if pushed too hard too long as well as cause stability issues but as long as you don't push it too far you should be fine.

It appears that PDANET tablet has released it's new beta that is supposed to work with Blackberrys! Unfortunately you can't search for it right now in the actual market, but if you google pdanet tablet beta2 the first link will take you to the market link for it, but I can't install it from there. One of the problems is that it says it isn't compatible with the Acer a500. If anyone is able to get this app and if they can make it work PLEASE LET US KNOW!!!!!!
Wireless tether or barnacle work well.I had lots of crashes with pdanet
But I guess if you don't root its the only option I know of.
BETA 2 unfortunately won't ever come out. I sent an email to June Fabrics since I've been a customer for over a year now and this is what they told me:

>
> Is it going to be released any time soon or is June Fabrics giving up on the tablet version period? Will they consider getting the regular pdanet version to work via BlueTooth and connect that way to the Tablet instead? I hope you can shed some light on this simple matter!
