what is a rom - HD2 General

im trying to customize my htc hd2 phone i dont know what roms are and how to install them and also if you could suggest good themes thanks in advance

There's stickies on top of every forum for the HD2, they are stickies for a reason. And yes it involves a lot of reading, and if you fail to read it all or choose to ignore it you'll end up with a very nice paper weight.

I'll help a little a ROM is not a theme. If you want to change the theme then look in the theme section in the standard HD2 section of the forums. Though most themes are centered around certain UI's like MaxSense, Cookies Home tab, etc, etc.

Ali, a ROM is a package that includes the full OS and other software on your phone. The stuff that came on your phone from the factory is the "stock ROM", and there are a large number of custom ROMs available here at xda that somehow improve or otherwise tweak/change the stock ROM to personal tastes and preferences. You can replace your stock ROM with a custom one if you would like, but the process is delicate and carries the possiblity of totally disabling your phone, permanently ("Bricking" it).
Themes are much safer, and a better place for you to start...in the "themes" section for your phone.
As for ROM's, there are some stickied threads at the top of this section ("Links to CABs, ROMs....") that have full instructions on ROM flashing....make sure you read them VERY carefully if you are thinking about taking that path. Then, read them again

Wow you just sounded like a father to me. Anyway nice to have ppl like you in XDA
Thanks Bro @Phunkee

Which ROM for my X1? Halp!

Greetings,
I heard that new roms were recently released by Sony Ericsson for the X1.
But since I'm a bit of a noob, I'd like some help:
1. Which rom version should I download for my phone?
2. How do I install it?
Thanks in advance,
SebK
I'm interested in "How do I install it?"
Thanks
If you don't know how to do this then don't!
Make sure you read, read and read some more then when you've made your mind up that you want to bother proceeding you'll be enlightened enough to make the choice yourself.
From what I've heard it's improvements, better boot speed...etc. So yeah I think I do want it...
Guys its really easy actually.
First click on the sticky on the front page of the 'Xperia ROMs Development' sub-forum and then click on the thread that has "Hard-SPL" in the title. You need to make your phone Hard-SPL'ed first before any flashing. All info in that thread - Look for it.
Next choose a ROM. A lot of people use Touch Xperience. Its got loads of features plus the X-panels are still kept. For a simpler ROM that, for me personally, worked better on my phone - Jack's ROM is pretty good. But it doesnt have panels (You can manually install them again afterwards though).
The flashing takes less than 5 mins so you can experiment all you want, with more than one ROM and it wont take too much time.
The info really are in all the stickys...

What is the best ROM for HTC HD2?

I'm using "EnergyROM 23541/21892" and I'm looking for something better and faster !
I have to say it's pretty confusing and overwhelming when you arrive here. Couldn't answer this myself, there should be a poll thread like there are on Modaco to help newbies.
This again, why dont you start trying some to see what you like...they are all good
For cutting edge ROMs - look at Miri's or Dutty's HG ROMs
For super clean - look at CleanEx (new ROM but already looks like it could be a goodun)
This is all subjective to personal opinion and taste. Best advice is to read through some of the posts and try for yourself.

Definitely the ARTEMIS !!
So indeed this is where a poll would be useful, look at all those different answers!
I think rather than a 'what is best' it would be much better to have a comparison page where all the chefs could update with the important information and a link to their forum page - so for example it would have a table with the chef name, driver version, manila version, rom version etc... and perhaps a few key points such as applications added/removed from stock ROM...
A first point of call so you can quickly see who has released a new ROM, and see its details
What this should NOT include is any star rating/number of downloads etc...
This is an easy question to answer, I think!
For any user unwilling to do a bit of research and learn about differences between ROM's, the best ROM is obviously the one they already have!

Another thing...

the hd2 can't have any preferences, you on the other hand might have some.
thus, the question becomes 'which of the roms might be the best for me?'
so the solution my friend, lies entirely in your hands
happy flashing mate
this will be closed v soon. i have seen many threads on this topic they all closed. so u have to try ur self and find what is the best. tast r difarent. for me Dutty's HG
Thats like asking
"What is the best console" or even "What is the best programming language".
Simply put, it comes down to personal opinion, while one person might rate a rom good for its long battery life, another person rates the rom bad because it didnt come with his favorite video player installed (just examples, i know battery life is more related to radio, and you can install apps on all roms)
You could however ask people to write reviews, but theres already a site for that http://xdaroms.com/ and i gotta admit thats not very actively updated/reviewed.
Personally, im always very pleased with Artemis roms, if your looking for the ram or cpu trick, forget i mentioned it, but if your looking for speed and stability alongside the latest wm and manila, check out the thread (read peoples replys a bit/read changelog/look at screens to get an idea of the rom)
The first time it can be a little scary to flash your phone, but after a while you will get the hang of it, its really not that hard or dangerous, just read the thread about flashing.
As long as you read the (help & specific rom) threads, it'll be just fine
I agree... If like me, you need a ROM which allows for Chinese Input, you become more limited in your options... so it really depends on what you need....
I am a bit surprised to see a request like "searching a faster and better ROM".
You should ask different questions, eg. I need this and that in a ROM, which
ones come with it? Even better, do a search yourself!
Dozens of ROMs are available. All of them are fast, all of them are good.
Hundreds of different answers are possible.
If you feel that your device is slow with the ROM you are using, there could be other reasons:
- bad flash
- defective device
I just tell this because after having flashed something like 50 different ROMs over the past three months, not any single one of them made my HD2 slow.

[Q] Sense Tweaks: how would you like yours?

Now we have very stable Sense builds (thanks to all the Devs but especially to Darkstone and Matt) I would like a bit more tweaks without necessarily changing the Sense theme.
The ones I would most love are tweaks to:
1. disable icon labels on home screens and application drawer
2. enable various animation styles on opening app drawer
3. reduce or increase number of home screens
What tweaks would you most like to make to Sense?
NB: If these issues have already been raised elsewhere on the forum then please delete this thread. Otherwise any help much appreciated please.
given that you know to whom you should thanks more, it is common to think that you have been reading a lot in the forum, am I right? Good! Then, why are you not posting your question in the Android General section? This is for development ONLY.
Oh and just so someone else doesnt come like "ermmmm...why are you not answering his questions?" here is your Answer: Sense is NOT open source, therefore, as far as I know, it will not be distribute under the SENSE name if they modify it. Moreover, HD2 builds are not as advanced as to be putting to much load on them. the simpler the homescreen, the more memory available for other programs. furthermore, there are various framework.apk files that will just work with the HD2 in the Nexus THemes and Apps section. Go around, do research. it will help you live a better life.
I really like HTC Sense, but hate the launcher. The 3 button thing at the bottom? It's too big, and I like my drawer in the middle.

Thanks for your reply! Hmmm, brash are we? Just wondering though, sense was so much tweaked or modified on winmo if I remember right (CHT etc?). Just wondered if that was possible in android was all. If it is not the appropriate forum for the thread, like I said feel free to move it elsewhere. Ta ta!!

Best rom for my epic 4g?

Hey guys, hoping you guys can give some insight to a noob on this. I am looking to install a good rom on my phone. I'm leaning how to do this, but what I am looking for is speed and functionality. Themes are not that important, but would be cool. I do have the DK28 and is rooted, so I might need a good video to show me how to rom this phone properly. But as far as rom's go, I'm looking for one that is a really good rom.
Thanks in advance
Mike
Welcome to Rooting your phone. As far as the best ROM? There is no one best ROM, everyone has a different preference and outlook on speed. Any of the latest EXT4 ROMs will probably suit you though. Here is a link that will help you pretty much with everything you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
They have guides on how to ROOT, ROM, THEME and other things. It has the links to kernels, roms, themes all there. Hope that helps, and good luck.

Cool thanks. Are there any video's that show how these are installed? I saw some on youtube, but they were not that great of quality, and was unable to really get a good view of how to do it.
Thanks again
Videos
These videos don't show how they are installed but give a nice overview of some of the most popular current roms. I found them really useful.

Thanks viper. I'm looking though them now. Just trying to find a video on how to install a rom. I have picked one out and looking for instruction on how t install. I don't want to brick the phone since it's my company phone.
I did it. Viper rom installed. Was not too hard. Found a good video for it. Thanks for the help everyone.

The fun part is thanks to nandroid backups you can try out a ton of roms (I flash a new one every couple of days, now I'm back at dl18 playing the waiting game)
From what i've seen most roms share all of the major fixes and use similar tweaks and optimizations that they borrow from other devs... and the only notable difference i've seen between them is theme and how much they include in the rom extras wise (apps, live wallpapers, etc).
Viper rom has a lot of updates but I wasnt too much of a fan of the overall look of it
Mammons bonsai rom is lovely and I <3 it
Midnight Rom is excellent too and one of the best themes in my opinion, though if i remember correctly he does away with Twiz launcher and uses launcher pro(could be mistaken though i'm really tired and have used too many roms)
Epic Experience was the first rom that I flashed and works great, but I was mainly playing with the others lately since they have more frequent updates
Quantum Rom - daemon is brilliant and am looking forward to his next release
Supernova - I did try it out but I honestly don't remember what features it had
Nebula - Tried this out too, supposed to be more stable/straight forward rom for stable professional people who dont want inflated quadrant scores or flashy live wallpapers (I might be quoting a different rom, if so i apologize)
Syndicate Rom - Awesome as well but its not for dk28 xD
Overall all the roms are amazing the only differences REALLY notable to me is that some use AOSP lockscreen by default, some use TWiz lock/launcher, some use ADW... launcher pro... but all of that is changeable with a flashable zip/apk...I tend to prefer mammon and quantum rom nowadays since iirc mammon made the call log fix and gps fix and daemon is doing all this ext4/cwm work and they seem to be leading up the race with innovation and knowledge (not saying others arent knowledgeable... i know nothing of developing i'm just guessing here)
EDIT: forgot to mention, only reason im not on dk28 right now is that personally I have minor bugs with it such as the one where you call somebody and it doesnt ring or make any sound but it actually calls them, and some other minor issues. I figured i'd wait for official froyo to drop and continue testing out roms when I get bored
Oh and theres also cyanogen mod which is sexy and amazing but is prebeta and buggy (signal bars not working, MMS is broken, etc)
Although I agree that he could have been nicer about it, these posts absolutely do not belong in the development forum. Questions about "which rom is best for me?" Definitely belong in general. The reason some people (myself included) aren't often very nice about it is becase it is increasingly becoming a problem. The op really should take the time to read the stickies before cluttering up the dev forum. Everyone should.
Also, calling someone a jackass- even if they are being one- almost never shows them the error of their ways.

P.S If I do change rom's do I have to flash everytime and lose my apps and info? I save contacts on the SD card, but will stick with viper rom if I have to flash the phone for other roms. It get's kind of time consuming.

It is best to get titanium backup (from the market) that way u can back up your apps and you can use Backup to Gmail (also from the market) to backup contacts, call log, and messages. That makes flashing different roms a lot easier. (In my opinion)

Aside from titanium (which i never really used much, guess I should try it out as it can make backups every night while you sleep if you set it to)
You can also make a NANDroid backup via rom manager//clockwork mod which when you restore will restore everything down to cache to be the same. same texts in your inbox even xD.
EDIT: Also if you have your phone linked to a google account when you go through the setup wizard (on some roms) it auto downloads the apps you had installed before from the market as well as contacts, etc. But if you want an instant restore to the same settings/wifi/etc then I prefer nandroid (idk if titanium does all that I think it just backups apps)
also note that along with most roms you can customize them to your liking. you can change the boot animations (given they use a kernel that allows it... if the rom has a custom boot animation already it'd work by flashign one in CWM), theme, battery look, keyboard, launch options, lockscreen. You could always just get a not-flashy basic rom that incorporates the basic fixes that people want (faster gps lock/5mb mms/call log fix) and theme it all yourself in the themes and apps subforum. The gingerbread theme is nice and nova has a list of boot animations and battery mods in his supernova rom page :3. If you're interested in that I'd say go for epic experience as I'm partial to it and he includes an "extras" page with downloads to all that hes removed such as the live wallpapers, samsung widgets, etc.

[REQUEST] NAND only rom (no SD format) for EU HD2, Stock Desire(HD)

Hello,
I've been trying different ROMs for months now and the only one that really fits me is "prj Clean Desire v0.3.2".. but it hasn't been updated and there are really some stuff that just stops it from being perfect (like News widget not searching etc).
Anyway, I'm really looking for a stock Desire(HD) rom that fits in EU HD2 NAND with a little room to spare for apps (+/-50MB?). I don't feel like having to use all sorts of tricks to boot Linux from USB and format my card with all sorts of partitions when I only need a little space for some basic apps and thats it.
I don't care if its deoxed or squashed or whatever those things mean, I only want:
1. Percentage battery icon
2. Easy way to choose the GPS location.
3. DFT install / CWM - doesn't really matter (although DFT is even easier..)
Does a rom like that exist (except prj's) and have I been blind all this time? If not (and you'll be so kind and refer me.. , will anyone be able to make such a rom?? I'll be glad to donate some of my precious hard earned money
Thanks!!
Stock Desire HD RUU is about 420mb
so NO WAY it can fit in a 512mb LEO without removing a lot of stuffand, also if removed, you can have no more than 80-100mb free in the best case and with all unnecessary apps and stuff removed
So your request is almost impossible.Only way is to sqyash it, but for me is not a great way to proceed (but this is just me feeling)
what's bad about sqyashing stuff? and 80-100 mb is more than enough.. how many apps do I need install? 5? 10?? should be enough..
second that!
I want desire hd rom like MDJ's SuperLight ROM, but a lil bit updated!

Whether or not the devs see it is besides the point. This is for posting builds/roms etc.
We have a Q&A and General forum, next time you should post something in there, if they see it, they see it, if they don't, they don't.
Can you imaging what kind of ****hole the dev section would turn into if everybody was allowed to post any old topic in here? We need it to be clean and organised.
cheers for putting it in the right place then!
