anyone know of a way i can do this without rooting??
Unfortunately not at this time (hopefully with stock froyo). The best you can do is WIRED tether with PDAnet wired tether app.
If you want wifi tethering use PDA Net.

Are you on crack? Trying to defend your incorrect statement by saying its still wireless? You specifcally said wifi tethering, to use the "wireless" you need to use the very few and limited bluetooth enabled devices or some kind of add on.
wifi specifically means WLAN devices based on IEEE 802.11, which is not supported.

First of all, don't drag me into your drug addictions. My first post said wifi and when I saw this, I went back in to edit it to say wireless and I thought the save took. So when you commented me back, I went off of what I thought was there.

That just disables the authentication. Sprint Hotspot only supports 3g, for 4g tethering you'll have to use Wireless Tether (or one of the paid apps i.e. PDAnet or EasyTether)

True. But it still beats paying 30 bucks a month. I use both wireless tether and sprint hot spot. I got easy tether pro for my wife. She didn't want to root her phone. With 4g she never looses her connection. With 3g she would.
I deleted the hotspot... there's no need for it imo... I think one app for tethering is enough.

When did this happen? I was able to use sprint hotspot with 4g since november when I got my phone. It would put the little 4g hotpot icon in the status bar. Only since I rooted my phone have I not been able to hotspot 4g.

Even if you activate 4G and turn on tether, you aren't tethering 4G using sprint hotspot, it still uses the 3G network.

Hmm interesting I never really bothered to check the speeds when using it. It showed the 4g tether icon on the top left (4g surrounded by the 2 half circles on each side) so I just assumed it was broadcasting 4g.
I don't think wireless tether is working for me either in getting 4G tethering. I enable the 4G before starting tethering. Start tethering, connect on my other device, speed tops out at around 1.5Mbps, usually around .5Mbps. If I run a speedtest on my phone, get around 4-5Mbps so I am not sure if I am really tethering the wimax, or just the 3G.
slow wifi tethering
Hopefully the wireless tether has fixed the bugs. I tried it back in December and it had awful throughput. I haven't found a good solution for doing wireless tether for 4g. Kinda sucks.
still looking for an fix too
I get the same results, tethering will have .30 to .50 kbps and speed test with phone on 4g will will get me 6mbps to 8mbps. what is the deal? Was the app built for 3g use only or why is it filtered down to a slower output? please help us.
I came from the evo and I remember there being a hack that would let you use the sprint hotspot for free instead of wireless tether, is there a way or a fix in the making for this, cuz I prefer that app over the wireless tether app. Thanks!

It only allows you to use WPA/WPA2-PSK as the encryption method. Personally I think the wireless tether is a pretty good app, In addition to the encryption it gives you the option of using Access control, to deny or allow connections to the phone.
Is there a way to have our Xoom connect to the wireless tether ad-hoc instead of having to uses native 3G mobile hot spot app on fascinate. I know when I had the galaxy tab someone made a wpa.supplicant (think that's how it was spelled) file to put somewhere in /system/? So it could connect to phones using wireless tether.

Only if your Xoom is Rooted can you connect to Ad Hoc after a minor hack.

His phone is rooted already if hes already using the Wireless Tether App from the market.
He just needs to install the newest beta which has infrastructure mode instead of Ad-Hoc, and the Xoom will identify it without any hacks on the Xoom.

Thanks for the input, but these apps are phone specific. I'm well aware of the wireless tether apps, both for root and the experimental 3.0. I've tried just about everything out there and can't get the Xoom to see my CDMA Hero running AOSP 2.3.3. Even the bluetooth tether will not connect. My laptop sees it fine, my Xoom sees an EVO that uses wireless tether. I'm afraid I may have to ditch the old Hero...

I'm rooted. I cannot figure out a decent tethering solution. The stock version will not let me tether even though I'm rooted running greyblur. I've tried the wifi tether app and it never connects. I'm currently using barnacle but it seems to run really slow. Always under 1.0 mbps while my atrix alone is at 2-3mbps. What is everyone's tethering solution like?

And you have switched the APN in the network settings to the "Tether" one?
PDANet (on marketplace) should work as wired tether regardless.
Use Barnacle tether... its better than adding the Tethering APN. Download it from somewhere and then sideload it.

As far as I know, the only thing AT&T can see is your data usage. They'll go after you if your data use is suspicious or something. You have to use the "Tether" APN in order to have the wireless tether feature on the phone work at all without a plan.
Try WiFi Tether. Works same as Barnacle. Download .apk and install.

If you have Limited Data then they can catch you easier. If you have unlimited its a little harder from what Ive hear. Plus using WiFi tether or Barnacle Tether is safer than using a new APN.

You don't need to change to tether APN to use Barnacle or WiFi Tether. Its not just data usage they see with using APN. This has already been discussed in another thread.

Nothing to do with data plan. They can see you are taking an extra "hop" so to speak when tethered using APN method. It can be faked out, but more trouble than its worth.

In your APN settings, under the 'APN Type' heading it should read 'default'. Modify this to 'default, tether' without a space. Then turn wifi on. Wait a sex. Then turn on wireless hotspot/tether. Worked like a charm for me.

Care to share that article? I'd like to read it
Also, what I meant before was that you needed to change the APN in order to use the built-in tether feature, not a tether app ^^
I believe he is talking about TTL or Time to Live on packets. if your phone sends data back to AT&T it will always have the same TTL attached to the data packet, lets say 64 which means in 64 'hops' the packet will be discarded as undeliverable, if you tether to another device, the hop will be one less because it will go 64 from the computer/tablet/tethered device to the phone, reduce by one as its done one hop, then 63 from phone to the tower, if they AREN'T measuring tethers like this then they should, because its pretty productive.
all they have to do is check the data packets and watch as everything is 64 then suddenly 63's are coming through without a tethering plan. -caught them-

Wired tether 1.4 works for me, except on linux - even though it appears that stock attempts to use rndis (dmesg on my linux box shows that it momentarily recognizes a rndis device), it doesn't work the same way that Rodderik's rndis support worked in his EC05 kernel... windows auto-detects it just fine, though

I like keeping track of how much data I use while tethering. Wired and wireless tether lets me do that. Playing MW2 and BF3 over 3G is data intensive, so I like to keep an eye on it. Plus, those are things the Sprint knows wouldn't be coming from the phone normally, so limiting their data use would be a good idea.

No can do. The PC doesn't have wireless. Plus it's nice to charge the phone and only use one radio at a time instead of the big drainer of EVDO and Wifi going full bore.
