Oppo Unveils World's First 1080p Smartphone

Chinese manufacturer to release 5-inch smartphone with a whopping 441 PPI screen.
ZoomWhen you think of smartphone titans the first company that comes to mind may be Samsung or Apple. But despite their record high smartphone sales, neither company has achieved what Chinese phone company Oppo has. After releasing the world's thinnest smartphone and the world's thinnest quad core smartphone, the company is back again with the world's first 1080p smartphone.
Dubbed the Oppo Find 5, the 5-inch smartphone features a whopping 441 pixels per inch (PPI), making the iPhone's 326 PPI retina display look like an Etch A Sketch toy from the 60s. Resulting in a crisp 1920 x 1080 display, the Oppo Find 5 knocks the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 out of the water. Even better, the Oppo Find 5 has just as much beauty on the inside as it does on the surface.
The device is going to ship with Android 4.1 on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor. To get an idea of how powerful this chip is, the APQ8064 easily beats the Exynos 4412-based Galaxy S III and Tegra 3-based Nexus 7 on a number of benchmarks. Other rumored specs include 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front facing camera, 16GB or 32GB of storage and a 2,500mAh battery pack.
No word on pricing or a release date just yet, but we'll keep you posted. Until then, we'll just have to hope for a global release so we can all enjoy this promising smartphone.

I`am also interested in the Huawei Ascend Quad D and it`s successsors.
Lets hope 2013 will be the start of a revived playing field and many new players joining so we can have more to choose from at reasonable prices
They used quadrant, how qualified do you think they are to say that the S4 quadcore is "Better" than the Exynos 4412???

As i`am beeing a longtime Samsung user and most of the time satiesfied, it is exciting and more important necessary that when more parties are entering with good smartphones that is good for us consumers. It might keeps the big three (Samsung, Apple and HTC) pushing the envelope and produce even better and maybe more price fiendly smartphones. So this is not only related to the S3 forum but for all android devices forums. I as a consumer want the best in quality/price related phone. That doesn`t have to be a Samsung, HTC or any other device per se.
It's harder to sue a Chinese company for patent theft so the way things are going the Chinese companies might be the only real chance to risk some future innovation.

So years of hard work by major players are not worth considering if a new mobile with a killer spec arrives? Releasing a mobile is one part, reliability and software support is another part.
If these Chinese players can do then I'm sure samsung or any other major players can do the very same
1080p sounds jaw dropping, I really doubt the performance of graphics with that resolution. Do exynos5 or adreno 320 has enough power to do so.? Considering the iPad with powervr graphics I think it might be possible.

Exynos 5(CPU), Mali-T604 (GPU) has plenty of power to push the 1080P screen, has a huge pixel by pixel ratio it can push (2560X1600 to be exact)

if everything is good...i ll definitely get one for myself .....
Useless
Himan eye can't distinguish above 300 ppi.
It's an overkill.
Plus it will take an impact on battery.
Um the actual human eye can distinguish up to 1400dpi at smaller distances, don't fall for the urban myth.

High End mali will be of t-658 which can push 2560x for sure. It's suitable only for tablets . Also I don't think 300 ppi will be a restriction for human eye

Chinese stuff tends to sound good on specs but often usability is terrible....
If these specs are true, the oppo find will probably have better specs than the galaxy S4
I remember looking at the Oppo Find 3 around the time of the SGS2, it was a nice looking phone with good specs, but it was more expensive than the SGS2.

And it will cost more money then Sammy SGS3
Who knows about quality of Camera, sound, dynamic?
Will see! For now all China phones half a crap
Won't have good dev support= no good
Made in China= everything falls apart when you look at it
Simples!
The problem with the Chinese devices is that they use an annoying version of android like miui, lewa etc. If they just use AOSP with added features and theme they could blow samsung away!

Where do you think the iPhone is made and 65% of Samsung Galaxy, anything can be manufactured in China to quality standards, if the customer pays the correct cost, pushing down the cost to have it cheaper means lower quality parts.
I sure hope the screen technology on the new LG Nexus 4 is as good as, or close to that of the HTC One X screen ?
I have the Galaxy Nexus, and international One X, running CM10 Nightly's on both. There is absolutely no question whatsoever, that the One X has by far the superior screen technology, over Samsung's 720p pentile AMOLED screen on the Galaxy Nexus. The One X is easier to see outside in daylight, the image is more crsip / sharp on the One X, and reading texts in e-mails and news webpages is also far clearer and more detailed on the One X. Only thing the Samsung screen has on it, is the deep blacks and cartoon colors, that's it.
I know the Nexus 4 uses IPS technology, similar to that of HTC's One X. I am not even asking for the Nexus 4 to be better than the One X's screen, I will be a happy camper as long at it is at least the same quality and clear image.
Whats the verdict ?
I read somewhere that they are very close in quality. Hard to choose which is best, so I wouldn't worry!
some say yes
i think probably not, but close
They're basically even. I wager some reviews will say its better, but overall they'll be a draw.
I'd say it's better. IPS is amazing.

Looks like you can afford it, buy it and put it side by side then let us know. I would go to a Sprint or ATT store, they have both the One X and LG Optimus G.
Screen
They should be very similar, the only difference I could see from the Specs sheet is that the Nexus 4 has a resolution of 1280x768 and 320dpi vs the One X's 1280x720 and 312 dpi.
its better afaik...
768x1280 vs 720x1280
True HD IPS plus vs Super IPS2
plus the contrast is greater
OT:
If I'm not mistaken, the SLCD2 screens in the ONE X are made by Samsung, and now they even makw SLDC3 1080p screen like showcased in the HTC J Butterfly.
I don't understand why Samsung keeps using their inferior (Screenburn, low Brighness, inaccurate colors.., in most cases higher power usage) Amoled screens
in their top Smartphones.
The Galaxy Note 2 with an 5.5" 1080p SLCD3 would have been amazing.

You are COMPLETELY mistaken - Samsung don't make the one x screens at all.
Sharp & acer make the screens available on the ONEX (with Sony making a few that seem to be U.S AT&T version only)
Sharp is the warm yellow variant
Acer is the cool blue variant
Most say sharp is the better version.

Panel IDs for HTC ONE X
Sharp 0x294000f
Acer 0x4940014
Sony 0x1810
Sony tends to be US AT&T only for most, international devices are either acer or sharp.
So, you can forget Samsung making these screens.

I believe OPPO said the screen is made by JDI
I suspect it's this one...
CARL AT OPPO FORUMS HAS CONFIRMED DISPLAY IS MADE BY JDI - SORRY FOR THE MISINFORMATION THAT I FOUND ON THE INTERNET SAYING THEY WERE MADE BY LG
JDI (Japan Display Inc.) is going beyond tech demonstrators with its announcement of impending mass production of a 5-inch full-HD, 1,080 x 1,920 display with 443 PPI. In a joint venture with Hitachi, Sony, and Toshiba, JDI will produce TFT-LCD modules utilizing LTPS (Low-Temperature Poly-Silicon) and IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology to manufacture screens displaying approximately 2.3 times more information than currently possible on 720 HD (720 x 1,280) display screens. The results will include very high contrast, wide viewing angles, and high luminance with minimal color-shift.
Sharp Corporation has begun production of its own 5-inch full-HD (1,080 x 1,920 pixels) LCD displays for smartphones employing CG-Silicon (Continuous-Grain Silicon) technology along with a new pixel design. CG-Silicon allows for fewer layers, and increases manufacturing yield. Another Sharp advantage is their 5-inch screens can operate at lower power consumption levels as compared to other 5-inch displays. At 443 PPI the Sharp panels provide as many pixels on a 5-inch screen as found on full-HD TV displays, as also does the JDI panel. Manufacturing has already started in Japan, and Sharp will ramp up volume in October 2012. It should be noted that Sharp makes the 5-inch screen for Apple’s most recent iPhone 5, with only 326 PPI.
LG will provide display screens for the Chinese company Oppo, which announced the Oppo Find 5 smartphone. The announcement indicated 440 PPI, but that is easily accounted for as a rounding error in PPI calculators, and should be equivalent to the Sharp and JDI displays; all three of which offer a PPI count that provides a 35% pixel density improvement over Apple’s so-called “retina display”. The new LG display screens will include AH-IPS(Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) to provide wide viewing angles, excellent accuracy in expression of color palettes, and rapid response to touch inputs.

However, a more recent press release from JDI regarding display prototypes for vehicles suggests that a WhiteMagic display could be inbound. It talks of a 5-inch 1080p display with 438 PPI and “low power consumption that is approximately 50% less by utilizing an RGBW pixel structure”. This display also includes an “integrated touch function (without cover glass)”, probably similar to Sony’s sensor-on-lens touch screen technology.
As a reminder, a WhiteMagic display has the red, green blue and white (RGBW) sub pixels aligned horizontally. The additional white sub-pixel significantly increases display brightness compared to normal LCD and OLED screens. The technology can be used to double the brightness or to save 50% of the backlight power, as suggested by the JDI press release. There’s no guarantee WhiteMagic will appear in this 5-inch 1080p display, but it looks like the technology is there if Sony wants to use it.

The Chinese company Oppo, released the Oppo Finder earlier this year, claiming the title of “world’s thinnest smartphone” with a thickness of only 6.65mm at its thinnest point, and 7.1mm at its thickest part. The iPhone 5 measures 7.6mm thick.

Oppo now says it will bring the Oppo Find 5 to consumers with a 5-inch, 1,080p, 441 PPI display, at a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080, in that same 6.65mm form-factor. It seems quite likely the Oppo Find 5 display will be made by LG. Apple should be wincing right about now, and not only because of the display. The other Oppo Find 5 specifications could slice Apple to the core.
Full specifications, pricing, and a release date have not been announced.

Japan Display Inc an LG created most displays for Iphone 5. They have also created displays for other phones in the past along with many other phones.
If you look iPhone 5 Scratch Test With Knife and Keys on Video you surely think that new iPhone have no shortages. But it is not true. There is an iPhone 5 shortage as a result of in-cell display. Let’s check out what we found. According to many news iPhone 5 has been outstripping supply because of a shortage of the in-cell display units utilized in the new phone.
The new iPhone utilizes in-cell screen technologies, which rolls with each other the display and touch-sensitive elements of the screen in order to make it thinner. These displays, though, tend to be more labor-intensive to make. Which means the problem.
At first Apple was using LG Display Co. and Japan Display Inc. to create the new four-inch screens. To make sure manufacturing remained high, though, Apple drafted in the help of Sharp to produce more displays.
Based on reliable resources, however, Sharp can not meet demand. Reports claim that the company struggled to fix problems in the screens-the knock-on result being delayed deliveries of IPhone's and less stock to offer to consumers.
Of course, this really is all based on analyst reports and not cold, hard numbers from Apple itself-so it is best taken with a pinch of salt. And, uh, a very good reason for selling out of phones may be the fact that they sold 5 million of the things, instead of, you know, having minor provider issues.
In any case, no doubt iPhone 5 shortage with in-cell display it’s a issue Apple would like to fix soon. For the time being, you can at the least now reserve an iPhone 5 for in-store pick-up, so at least you will not have to wait in line.

Tokyo, October 4, 2012. Japan Display Inc. (JDI), a leader of LCD technologies, announced today that it will start mass-production shipment of 5.0-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) TFT-LCD modules for smartphone applications this October.
Today, mobile information devices, such as smartphones, are increasingly more sophisticated and functional. As a result, compact-size displays are required which are able to show a large amount of information.
JDI is developing LCD modules to meet these growing requirements, based on its advanced core technologies, such as low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) for high resolution, in-plane switching (IPS) for wide viewing angle performance, and thinner backlight design for compact size, among others.
The features and benefits of JDI's latest module include:
1) High resolution to display a large amount of information
The 5.0-inch full-HD, 443 ppi* module is able to display approximately 2.3 times more information as compared to 720HD (720x1280 pixels).
2) Wide viewing angle and high contrast for fine and beautiful pictures
IPS technology enables wide viewing angle performance and high contrast, with minimal color shift-and along with the module’s high luminance (500cd/m2)-contributes to finer and more beautiful pictures.
3) Large display area, slim, and compact-size LCD module
The thinner LCD module (1.4mm), combined with its narrow frame (1.2mm), allows for compact smartphone design.
This new product is well-suited for high-end mobile smartphones designed to display a large amount of information. With this new product introduction JDI continues to demonstrate its leadership in the global small-size, full-HD resolution LCD module market.
JDI will demonstrate this product in booth #2701 at FPD International 2012, October 31 through November 2, 2012, in Yokohama, Japan.

Oppo Find 5 Now Official: 5-inch 1080p 441ppi Display, Quad Core and Super Slow Motion Filming (Video)
[UPDATE] OPPO unveiled the Oppo Find 5, the company latest entry in the high-end smartphone territory. The Find 5 most striking feature is the 1080p LCD display that boasts an amazing 441ppi pixel density. That’s the same resolution and pixel density as the display of the HTC Droid DNA/Butterfly. Similar to the Xiaomi Mi2 launch this summer, OPPO’s launch was held in the 798 arts district in Beijing. The event, which took place at a art center, included more than 500 attendees. We attended the launch event, and got up a close look with the new full HD phablet device. It was a nobby launch event that was quite impressive, the Chinese handset maker seem to has an ambitions to become a recognized player in the international market…
OPPO newest flagship the Find 5 packs some of the best specifications, starting with a powerful Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core chip clocked at 1.5GHz and 2GB of RAM. The 5-inch touch screen display has a 1920 x 1080 resolution which is an AH-IPS LCD panel manufactured by LG. The rear shooter of the Find 5 is fitted with a 13MP sensor, while the front camera packs 1.9MP. The stacked CMOS sensor delivers F/2.2 aperture, with 4-layer coating lens and blue glass filters. It can record videos and snap photos in HDR mode at the same time. Find 5 is the first smartphone in the world with this ability generate by hardware. It only comes with 16GB storage with no option to expand via an microSD card. The battery is a 2500mAh unit, which is adequate, but seem less for a 5-inch device.
Media capabilities on OPPO Find 5 are enhanced by the Dolby 3D surround and Dirac HD, a high-end audio system that has never been integrated on a mobile device before. Only companies such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, BMW, offer this type of technology. And best of all, the Find 5’s stock earbuds are fine-tuned for Dirac audio system. The new phone also comes with NFC, gently touching two phones will pair them in less than a tenth of a second, 50 times faster than Bluetooth pairing. The SmartTags, a small label with built-in-chip, will also add simplicity and convenience for user to activate any application with preset. Find 5 also supports Wi-Fi Display and DLNA, two functionality that allow projecting screen contents onto HDTV wirelessly.
OPPO Find 5 is compatible with the following networks: UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+/HSPA+42 (850, 1700, 1900, 2100MHz), GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz). Too bad there is no 4G LTE. It will launch in early 2013 across select markets. Judging from the existence of the US site, we can speculate that the OPPO Find 5 will sell for $499 ( contract free, 16GB version) in the United States. In China, the device is slated to go for 2,998 yuan (about $480). We’ll keep you posted as soon as we find out more.

I think that oppo have now the JDI display (best quality for good reviews and market development) In future is possible to switch for LG displays. All phone brands (Lg ,HTC ,Samsung) after 3-6 months, the production quality and price drops for a expensive phone.... only the profit remains the same

reading between the lines, probably JDI

I spent over an freakin hour last night trying to figure out what Display this phone had, and Carl had told us long ago its a JDI Display
I must have missed the thread on www.oppoforums.com when it was posted. Their was a lot of info on the web I found while looking, saying that it was made by LG though?
If Carl said its JDI then that's what it is. Anyways, I did find some really interesting info on JDI though and their pixel layouts, along with the way they do their arrangements. They are doing some pretty interesting things I was unaware of, I don't think have ever heard of JDI until last night.

if you find any datasheet on the display, care to share it? (need to find a datasheet for the display and the Orise display controller, to play with gamma and other values in the kernel)
I got some time to spare soon, as soon as I finish this test wont take long 70 min timer. I will dive in.
Samsung annonced officially, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini.
it has 4.3" qHD disply, android 4.2.2 but with out most of the features of S4 (like no double shot, no 360 panorama), has S Health but with out S4 sensors like temperature sensor, barometer and humidity sensor
chipset is most likely Snapdragon 400 at 1.7Ghz with 1.5Gb of RAM and internal storage is 8Gb with Micro SD card slot for expanding it.
rest of connectivity options and usual, wifi, bluetooth,GPS with GLONASS etc...
also has IR blaster for remote controlling.
the phone has dimensions of 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.94mm and weighs 107g which is cool
battery is user replacable and is 1900mAh.
no word on pricing. samsung will show it off on June 20 and most likely to reveal pricing then.
available color options are Black Mist and White Frost.
i kinda like it except the qHD screen. it should have been at least 720p but all its success depends on its pricing.
what do u guys think?
The SIII Mini always struck me as a bit pointless, having neither the spec to appeal to those that like phones with a bit of muscle or the price point for those that want a decent phone on a budget. It didn't really satisfy anyone and I have a sneaky feeling we're going to see more of the same with this.
Definitely not more of the same, but then the s3 mini was especially useless. Rumors/leaks have the ATT version of the s4 mini at 720p (presumably pentile, but no confirmation). But gsmarena just confirmed that the version announced for europe is NOT pentile. It's got the same RGB s stripe as the Note 2. At 4.25" with qHD, it has a very respectable 259ppi that is at least as sharp as a Galaxy S3, and maybe slightly sharper. I'd almost as soon have RGB qHD as 720p pentile, so at least I know for sure what I'm getting. It comes with air view and multiwindow, which is kinda surprising.

If this is $300, I'm gonna be very happy. If $350, I'm gonna be a little happy. If $400, I'm gonna be not very happy, but might get it anyway.

I saw it in a video (closely), and it's not as sharp as S3.
I don't know but it's clueless to compare the number of subpixels to say which is sharper.
With the lower ppi, Note 2 is still a little bit sharper than S3 because they scale it the same as S3 (by adjusting ppi) and no pentile effect on Note 2. But they cannot do the same on a smaller screen like S4 mini-

It's clueless to think you can make a screen sharper through scaling (presumably, you meant adjusting "dpi"). And to claim subpixels have nothing to do with sharpness but still hail the Note 2's lack of a pentile effect as responsible for it's sharpness. What do you think the pentile effect is? And to think you can divine screen sharpness through an encoded web video. Trust me, you can't.
You can pixelate software elements through improper scaling, but you can't sharpen a low density screen through software scaling. For example if you zoom in enough (a form of 'scaling') on a small image even viewing it on a super sharp screen, yeah, it'll look bad, but that's not the screen's problem. If you've got a low density screen, the sharpest of images will look crappy no matter how you scale them. The S4 mini is sharp for the same reason the Note 2 looks sharp: because they share the same complete RGB matrix and almost the same density.
Pentile is nothing more or less than false advertising, a way of artificially inflating the raw spec. It's not the worst thing in the world, it just requires a much higher purported ppi to reach the same sharpness as an RGB matrix screen.
Again like the S3 mini, Samsung is trying to milk more money out of the S4 series but now targeting the mid-range side. Average consumers will probably buy this as there is an "S4" tag on it and is much cheaper than it's big brother.

I don't think you understand my opinion, maybe due to my bad English. To say clearer, what I mean is the Note 2's screen's scale is basically the same as Galaxy S3 with the same 320 dpi - zooming from 4.8 to 5.55 inch. This means, a same font of texts, a word with a length of 120 pixels on S3 (1/6 of the total length) is still 120 pixels on Note 2 (also 1/6 of the total length), but 15.625% bigger in real-size (what you actually see). So is the result is what you can see clear on S3, you can see it CLEARER on Note 2. That's is the technichque Samsung usually implements, like on Note 8.0 that make it much more sharper than iPad mini in browsing. If we compare a same line of texts with 5mm of "real size", the result from a screen like One X basically has 18% more pixels to illustrate the detail of the text, which results in being clearer than Note 2. And if you really have a Note 2 (i'm using it), when visiting some websites in desktop mode (like xda forum, lol), the text is very small and not crisp anymore.
But how about Galaxy S4 Mini? "The S4 mini is sharp for the same reason the Note 2 looks sharp"? OK, now we will consider the same thing as Note 2 above. For a line of texts equivalent to 1/6 total length of the screen, it takes only 93.33 pixels, which means noticeably less than S3 and Note 2 with smaller "real size" also, so it cannot be as sharp as S3. And in fact, Samsung did rescale from 320dpi to 240 dpi on Galaxy S4 Mini, which also means for a same font of texts, the number of pixels for displaying increases about 15.3%, so from 93.33 pixels I said above now it is appox. 108 pixels, which is not too far from Galaxy S3, and the payoff is the screen is cramped. So we cannot say "because Note 2 is sharp so Galaxy S4 Mini is also sharp"
About Pentile screen, it is not totally "nothing more or less than false advertising", but more like "false understanding of the major and the misleading criticisms". Why? Because most of people don't understand what is "Pentile". In fact, this "technology" can ONLY be used on OLED (AMOLED) technogy, which has the uneven luminance and lumious time of different color subpixels. Even experts cannot show the "exactly" ppi of an Pentile Amoled screen (because even with Pentile, different stripes layout leads to different result), while some people try to do an easier way that comparing the total number of subpixels, which is totally false. In fact, Galaxy S4 has 623 subpixels/inch, slightly higher than Blackberry Z10 (615) and iPhone 5 (565), but it is MUCH more sharper and not really different from the normal RGB 1080p screen like Xperia Z.
With Pentile screen, the main culprit of all criticism is not the lack of subpixels, but the uneven scale of pixels (because they're not real pixels) and uneven big-small gaps redundant. That's why they call the subpixels layout of S4 is innovative while still Pentile, because it is much much better than the traditional matrix on Galaxy S3 and together with the high ppi reduces most of Pentile problem (in fact, with traditional matrix, even with 441 ppi probably there will be something there)

No, the sensor isn't there.

I'm considering this too as my next phone.
Compact, powerful, enough RAM and a non-pentile qHD display.

It was recently announced that CM10.1 is being prepared for i9195 version. Is there any info of whether it will also be supported for i9190 international version (without LTE and NFC)?
I also suppose we need a separate ROOT thread for it as nor 9192 neither 9195 procedures might fit.

No info. There isn't a root for the 9190 yet - the 9192 and 9195 procedures do not work on the 9190 and will probably brick your device.
hello, does anyone know when this phone will be available in the usa? can not find any info on this
if this is in the wrong forum please move, thanks
Which phone should i buy? sIII or s4 mini
Get the S4 mini if you want to future-proof yourself.

Hmm, you've mentioned the main benefit of getting the S3 I guess.
Also, the S3 has quad-core as opposed to the dual-core S4 mini. S3 has 1 GB of ram only though.
There are also more accessories for the S3 than for the S4 mini because the mini has a smaller market and is also a newer device.
Today was the offical pre order for Z2 in Singapore. Was deciding to pre order one and to sell off my current z1.. The moment I picked up the Z2.. I was disappointed... The display was not as fabulous as what was reviewed.. Seriously, its slightly better then the Z1, Not as good as the Z Ultra. I can confirm that apart from the viewing angles that Z1 lacks, its almost the same as the Z2!! Infact sharper then the Z2! The camera wise, just the lack of 4K recording, the rest was infact the same as Z1 4.4... The Z2 still captures Superior Auto in 8Mp. Still No option to change the resolution in Superior Auto. Sad....
The trade in Price for Z1 here in Singapore is $450... The Z2 cost $998.... So its an additional topup of $540 to buy an additional 0.2" screen, Slightly better screen (Because of the Viewing Angles, but lost in Sharpness), an additional 1GB ram and a 4K recording software..
In the end I hesitated and walk off the shop, need to have a second thought.... So dear Bros, I have tried the display set and this is what I found out. Its up to u guys to see if its a worth upgrade.... Z Ultra's screen is still the best!!!

Not even close to worth it. Z2 is such a minor upgrade to the Z1. And seriously, who has a need for 4k recording? Your SD card will fill up crazy fast for a difference that you will barely, if at all, be able to notice. Do you have a 4k TV to even view it on? Since 4K is useless marketing hype, all you really get is an extra gig of RAM and a slightly bigger screen, which in my opinion is a negative feature, not positive.

Well from what I have seen so far the Z2's screen seems to be one of the best out there, that being said I won't buy it coz I already have the Z1, it's better to wait for the Z3, it should come with 805 processor and 32 gb internal memory.

The Z2 is definitely NOT meant for current Z1 owners. It's a reasonable upgrade over the Z, and a very solid upgrade for the previous flagships. Nobody expects you to buy a new phone every six months, not even every year. 18 months or 24 months is a more reasonable update cycle; and Sony's current cycle gives you a brand new (< 6 months old) phone to consider whenever you decide to upgrade, while others (Apple/Samsung/etc) may have an almost one-year-old phone as their current flagship.
The only problem is when people decide they must always have the newest, then the cycle may seem too short. But, when you realize your Z1 is still among the best phones out there (even after the Z2 is launched, and possibly after the Z3 is launched), you will calm down. I didn't even consider the Z2, as the Z1 still does everything I need.
BTW, taking 20MP pictures remove one of the major advantages of the Z1/Z2 camera, which is supersampling to reduce noise. It's the same technique used by Nokia on the 808 (still the best camera phone ever), the phone analyses all 20 million pixels and "filters" the high frequency part by resampling the image to a smaller resolution, which will remove random noise and make the image cleaner. This is a byproduct of techniques used by the oil industry in oil prospecting, it's a very well established mathematical mechanism that is now being applied to photographic imaging. I'm sure it cost Sony a lot to develop/license it, and they want you to use it since the resulting 8MP image will be better than the 20MP one in almost every single case. Actually, since most people will take pictures to upload to Facebook, the 3MP/2MP settings are much more useful than the 20MP one since they allow for much more effective supersampling (and Facebook will butcher the picture down to ~2MP anyway)
it's all the hype
Z1 is a great phone and a huge improvement over the Z. Z2 is just Z1 with a few minor improvements And a design fail. Sony included the charging port and memory card under a single flap. Only fools would sell a z1 for a z2.
Every single person has his/her own Opinion
The only feature I missing is when I watching youtube or gaming the dual front speaker. But not worth to sell my Z1 just for that.

You can't possibly be serious. Even though I despise OLED and prefer IPS LCD / TFT displays, the N3's screen is really gorgeous. It's much brighter than the Z1's. It's the only thing I miss since selling my N3 and buying the Z1.
I've been saying from the beginning that straight on the Z1's screen is one of the best. It appears 'washed out' because it is not oversaturated like almost every other phone screen out there, and is extremely realistic and color accurate. The Z2 seems to have lost some of that accuracy in favour of 'looking better', but I'm OK with that.

Are you sure about that? I'm 99.999% sure AMOLED screens are still nowhere near being as bright as LCD screens.
Source. The Z1's screen is actually really bright, 495 nits which is the highest of an Android phone in 2013! The Note 3 is pretty disappointing in the brightness category actually.

Still people out there who fall for the OLED oversaturation trick I see.
I will be upgrading if for no other reason than Sony included the LTE bands that I need. I have never been able to put my hands on a 6909 at a reasonable price until a month or so back and by then the Z2 was getting to close to justify the replacement of my 6903 just for LTE.
One things for sure, it's a testament to how much I like this phone when I will put up with no LTE...

the colours are more vibrant and the blacks are solid black though, no dark greyishness.
theres upsides and downsides to both though, IPS and TFT screens are much brighter especially outdoors in sunlight, colour productions are more natural etc.

Practically everyone, to the average consumer natural colors=washed out
Just a few days ago my uncle was wondering why Plants vs Zombies looked so "lifeless" on my phone, and compared it to his S3
So i can see why Sony bumped up the colors

So many people use the dynamic/vivid modes on their TV too, and are convinced it's better.
You can clearly see that Z2 is really good when it comes to display and you just saw it inside of the store and maybe a night time.
So I think that they might have reduced lots of white/greyish colour for sure.
