There's a setting under sound and display called power saving mode. Did you try unchecking that? It's description sounds exactly like an auto-brightness adjustment, but why would there be two of those? Just an idea.

Doesnt shut off at all. What the hell? Anybody have an idea?
There are TWO backlight settings, really. The first dims the screen after a set amount of time (found in Backlight settings), and the other turns off the screen entirely after a set amount of time (found in Power settings).
I, too, have found that the backlight just goes down to a very dim setting, but I haven't found it to have much of an impact on battery life, since I have the device set to sleep after just a minute.
And what about listening to mp3? Is it possible to listen without backlight on?

Software solution: Pocket Player for WMppc. You have the option to turn off the display yourself or after a certain amount of time it will turn the display off for you.
NEXT!!!
Clarification
Hey people your responses are still quite confusing. Let's make things finally clear:
SuperRob: So it's there an option to turn it off completely or not?
NeoDMD: Have you tried it on Herald?
Thanks
Answer
I finally got mine so I can answer the above for those, who may be interested.
1. So there is no option to turn the screen completely off and still not to put device tosleep in the settings.
2. Yup, Pocket Player is able to turn off the screen as well as the freeware utility ScreenSwitch.
So so far, everything is great
I know I know..
Holy old thread revival batman!
but I'm having this same issue does anyone have the cab files to make one of these work. The screen being on all the time cuts down my battery life and makes the phone get warm
Well, when battery going to die on the G1, the light flashes red. Which all it does is take up the little battery you have left. Any way to turn it off or an app that maybe can?

That LED takes up very little battery power if any. Trust me, if you're that low on battery power, then you have more issues to worry about than an led being on. That thing probably draws like 1/10 of a watt.
Aside from whatever power it draws, I'd like to be able to turn off the low power light because it overrides other notification lights. It doesn't let me know anything aside from the fact that the power is low.. It'd be nice if they could rotate or something.

Now that makes more sense as I have had the issue as well when I charge my phone while sleeping.
I asked the dev of Missed Call awhile ago if you could change the color of the charging and low battery. He said he couldn't because there is no change in something, I think no change in the HEX code or whatever.
Maybe he could try again, I would ask him since he was able to change the colors for everything else.

Dang id still love a way to turn it off
Is there any way (app, reg hack) to make rear LEDs blink on missed call or message? Front green/amber LED is too small and often hard to see. Battery consumption may be a problem, but rear LED doesn't have to blink as often; quick flash (e.g. 100ms) every 30s would be ok.
The developer of TorchButton might be able to help you.
Search the forums on that name and send him a PM.
the idea is wicked
how come no one ever thought of this
That´d be totally cool. And worth a donation.
"Whoa, your mobile´s cam got insane....! -No, I just got a text "
Can see it being a big battery drain if your not around to dismiss it.
+1 for this
Great idea!
Camera light or maybe light of hardware buttons..? Would be cool!

Light of hardware buttons would be very cool too..
Yes, hardware buttons light would also be nice. PMed TorchButton dev, hope he can help...
+1 to this idea! and the hardware button for the light although making it one of your quick links is fine

I got your PM.
I'm sure this is possible, but it would probably create a battery drain while notifications are busy. This is because the device must be in unattended mode (not in standby, display off). Unattended mode is required as the flashlight and the keypad light don't stay enabled if the device is in standby. Let alone be able to make it blink with an interval.
So, while there is a notification (i.e. missed call or unread text), battery drain would go up like at least 50%.

Thank you for research on the topic, and your reply. Too bad it can't work in standby.
I know where the option to shut off the light for the Video recording is but it doesn't shut off. My question is: is there of shutting off the light when i am recording a video on my phone? Maybe and app perhaps? or a way of deleting the setting in video mode? or a work around? anything? Its annoying when the option is there for it to shut off and it doesn't work. Its the same for my gf's xperia x10 phone too, it didn't work for 1.6 after the small update in summer and now it was fixed either with the bigger update. help please?
Take out the phone battery and re-insert. Hope this will solve the problem.

Yes, i have rebooted my cell phone several times. Thanks for trying to help out.
I also have this problem, the video light stays on despite the setting saying "Off".
Using 2.1.
search for xperia x10 flash light on market, it should work
Its on a low brightness. Just a privacy thing so other people know its recording. Kinda like the red light on most cameras

Oh really? thats too bad, i dont need the like all the time on, it kills my battery faster. I know before the update it used to be able to shut off once the setting was set on "OFF" mode. Ps other phones have the capability to record and have no light at all whats so ever. I dont think its a privacy issue

I agree with AssyrianBLOOD, it's a privacy issue. And don't worry about your battery life, HD video recording will kill it way faster. (For me, Battery life on 2.1 absolutely sucks )

The amount of battery life that an LED takes is so pathetically small that it shouldn't affect anything.
Every phone I've owned has had some sort of light to indicate recording as a privacy measure.
Is it something the manufacture imposed or government regulation? Because i know for a fact not every recording device (smartphones/ipod touch) has a LED or any indicator when you are recording. Secondly, the off setting used to work when x10 originally came out until the so called privacy issue came up. I want to know of a way of shutting it off without trying to cover it. I know HD also drains the battery faster but i am not making HD videos here, i'm making youtube videos for my faceboook and i though my phone does a good enough job. I just dont like the light setting having an OFF setting NOT working. If its a privacy issue than why have the setting to switch it off in the first place?
hey.. Sorry for hijacking the thread
I just came up with a thought.
The photo light does two levels of brightness as we know i.e Low brightness as a privacy feature while recording video and high brightness while switched on manually.
Is it possible(when the 2.1 source is released) that we can make a module to further increase power to the led to make it glow brighter so that we can actually use it as a led flash?? Just a thought
cheers
chetan
I just want to know if there is any of shutting it off thats it. You can hijack all you want once i get my answer ill move on. Im sure someone here knows how to shut off by some means thst doesnt require covering it.

this was asked in another fourm but never got a solid answer. I have my tablet connected to my TV in my bedroom and it is connected to my media server so i can watch movies from it and have it displayed on the tv. The issue is im staring at the tablet and TV both screens are on. Here is the question that the other user asked on the other fourm
"Is it possible to turn the a500 display off when connecting to a TV using HDMI out? If you try to lock the device (hit the power button), it halts the device completely. There is not brightness option for "completely off," so that's not an option. Ideally, I'd like to save battery if I'm watching a movie via HDMI.
Does this require a 3rd party app, if so, do you know of any? Thanks in advance! "
Yeah I stumbled on that one too and I don't think you can I hope someone prove me wrong I hope.

it's dual screen so no way to turn it off, unless Acer decide to do it so...
but why not just cover the screen..... with the case..
I think the point of turning it off is to save battery. I also am in the same position. I use it to watch netflix on my upstairs tv but it sucks cause it depletes the battery quicker then if I could just turn the screen off on the tablet. Hopefully something can done to resolve this. Maybe a mod or something.
don't tell me that you are not going to watch 8 hours in a row movies from the tablet on your TV.... without plugin on power your tablet... or even if you are in a friends house, you are watching a 3 hours movies but you will not stick to your tablet 8 straight hours...
or you bring your powercharger...

+1 +1 +1 +1, if you wanna use it as a dvd player plug it in.
You could conceivably use Widgetsoid or something similar to reduce screen brightness to 0%.
Has anyone tried looking at Tasker to see if it has functionality to allowing this?

But if you reduce the screen brightness to zero, will it not in turn reduce the output to your tv to zero? As far as I know, the tv will show exactly what the tablet shows. As someone else pointed out, just close the case. That's what I do! And heck yes, plug the tablet in so you can enjoy the awesomeness longer

Changing the brightness on the tablet does not affect the brightness of what's output over HDMI.
Also note that I said "conceivably" I woudn't suggest actually lowering the brightness to 0%, and hitting OK, it'd be difficult to get it back up whiel blind poking.
This is tight up with whatever player your using even without plugin to anything when turn screen off the video stops is very simple.

bummer. there should be an option for the screen to go dark/off until you hit a button or something. i can turn off my phone's display and still listen to music and access and play the music & videos stored on the MicroSD via USB.
one of the reasons i bought this is so i can plug it into other TVs in the house that don't have access to a digital media player. i would find it annoying to have two light sources in the room. plus the fact that you're draining the battery even more and putting miles on the screen's life. and i'm guessing you can't even charge via the HDMI port.
i won't be able to find out for myself until tomorrow because i just picked up the A500 tonight and it JUST started its 4 hour pre-boot charge.
The widgetsoid idea won't work. When you manually change the brightness to the lowest level that is what the system defines as "0%"

If you open your settings and turn off auto brightness and manually drag the brightness slider all the way to the left: this is considered "0" for the tablet.
So I was saying that you can try setting up a Widgetsoid widget to change the brightness to "0" but it won't be any darker than the previous "0" level.

I see.
But, I can most definately achieve darker screen settings with Widgetsoid than I can with the built in brightness control. Try it yourself, 0% is actually 0%.

What I do is use mobo player. Just swipe down on the left hand side of your screen and you drop the brightness down to 1%, which is pretty much off, you can't see anything on the screen. Hope this works for you.
I tried with mx video player, but couldn't get the brightness as low.
solutions?
Anyone find a solution? I've been trying to do the same thing with a G Tab.
Just fiddled with the brightness levels in Widgetsoid app. Even at the lowest screen brightness when I hit OK it reverted back to about a 10% from what I could tell. Must be a failsafe so you won't end up with a black screen. SO I agree with a previous poster. Doesn't look like it can be done at least with Widgetsoid.

Try backlight kller... I've nt had a chance yet, but found that suggestion in anther post. It lowers the screen brightness, usin. Long press of the bak button to bring up the menu.
