New owner (soon) where to start :) ? - Galaxy S I9000 General

So this will be my first Android mobile, I want to believe this phone was the best choice for this platform.
Moving from Windows Mobile (HTC HD2), so this is a new chapter in my mobile phones experience live
Not at all a noob, just want to receive some advices, where to start, if is a must to update the stock firmware, if XDA is the best community for Android (as is for WM), to meet the GS community

HD2 was my ex-phone 2
well dont rush to flash anything the moment u get ur phone do some reading here
try rooting it unlocking the market find a way to keep your contacts sync with gmail all the time if u gone play around with firmwares alot
then try the samset rom u will like it (its fixed now i think) prepare to brick the phone alot but dont warry u cant actualy brake it and if u realy like to do more try the lagfix on the stickies
u will be busy for a week or so
have fun with ur new mob

Thank you, I'm a little excited, 1 hour ETA for my new phone
On my HD2 I used a lot Microsoft Myphone who automatically sync my contacts, SMS, pictures with their web site.
I know that I can sync wit Gmail, but is there a solution for SMS ?

http://www.appbrain.com/app/tv.studer.smssync Sms sync
http://www.appbrain.com/app/app.calltrack phonelog sync
i dont know if they r bidirectional though but having the data at gmail works for me
oh and install appbrain too syncs your applications

Get latest firmware, root it, do the speed fix, edit gps.conf (use search of the forum for all I've said)

Before you do all the stuff install the Clockworkmod Recovery.

instead of doing all of the above, i suggest you to try the phone stock, out of the phone for a week or 2 at the very least, and then see really what you want to change from stock.
that's what i'm doing.
know your phone, before you start modding it.
i did the same for my old HTC Athena, and for my car as well
but in my car i kept it mostly stock until 10 yrs has passed, now i'm going nuts with the mods

Got the phone, amazing screen colors, already rooted and with latest firmware (Froyo), good speed, nice interfaces, many apps
Short question: I have the contact now synced with Gmail and also one of them with Facebook. I want in the contacts to see the Facebook picture not the one in in Gmail . How (I hope is possible) can I do this ?

Froyo?
too short...

Microsft Myphone Sync

Hi All,
I am going to be getting my new HD2 tomorrow (CANT WAIT) at the moment I have a TP2 and need something faster thing drives me mad sometimes.. Anyway back to the point I am going to be using Microsoft Myphone to sync everything up and then back down to my HD2 and basically wanted to know if this will work well, any problems experienced from other users etc.
Thanks in advance,
Charles Hurst.
I moved from a diamond to an hd2. the process was slow because I moved all my photos that way - but all my contacts, messages etc got moved. Apps and settings won't go though.

Yes mate - I literally could not recommend it more!
I went from a Touch HD to the HD2 and I'd already been using MyPhone as an automated backup service for a couple of months, so I was confident it would work.
It's also handy for when I flash new ROMs onto the phone. I have it backup everything except the storage card, and it works a treat.
I assume you'll still have the TP2 in case you do anything wrong, so you won't actually lose anything. It's real easy anyway, so I doubt that.
As mentioned above though, it obviously doesn't do apps. Also, if you can, connect to Wifi before doing it, as it can take a while 1st time.
Other than that, welcome to the fun that is HD2
Yes, I second the "use wifi". You may also find it time out now and again, I did. But it picks up where it left off.
If you're near a PC though I recommend that for pictures and such like, and using MyPhone for contacts, messages, notes blah de blah
Great
Great many thanks guys, only worry I have is that it does not put my text back correctly with each contact as I had this before with SBS backup (I think its called) all the text were just everywhere. Guess I will wait and see, cant wait to show off my HD2 to mates who have Iphones LOL
Thanks again,
Charles Hurst.
I showed my HD2 to a mate who has an iPhone, and his exact words were:
"Jesus, I thought MY phone was big!"
It's a lovely weighty size
Anyway, MyPhone shouldn't garble your contacts at all - same format in both phones!
Just syncing as we speak *fingers crossed* looks good so far though, the phone seems amazing and so fast its f**king incredible compared to using the TP2...
One thing thats odd it never come with facebook app on Vodafone but cant be hard to find.
Thanks again for your help.

Depending on what you want to do with facebook, you may not need it. Using the default integration with Sense, you can link your contacts to facebook so you can see their status updates (you have to actually go to the page where these are shown though - there's no notifications), set your own status, upload photos, browse friends' albums.
If you want more, there's always the facebook app, and http://m.facebook.com which is a nice lite version of the site.

help !!! phone very laggy and !

hey guys
here is mine prob(s)
i tried to update my phone today even tho SE updater said i had the latest software,
After all that no update... so im still on 16, so i had to reinstall al my settings manuelly, even tho i backed it all up it never kept wot i wanted, any way after putting wot i had back on come to copy my contacts over and the prob im having is it keeps duplicating all my contacts 2 or 3 times and i cant work out why its doing it, and also to top it off its gone so slow and laggy its unreal, had no probs with it before,
the only apps i hav is
atk
adw launcher
and all my timescape accounts set up,
please can anyone help with this annoying problem
many thanks for any help
Aaron
I'm guessin the duplicates are showing due to auto sync, maybe also another backup copy on your sd card or se sync?
go to settings, data synchronisation, click google (if its greyed out then choose select sync app n pick google), then untick auto sync, u can leave background data as that's used for market)
Perhaps delete all ya contacts after n maybe restore a copy of them from your sd card (if u hav a copy stored there)
Hope it helpz!!
P.s - maybe before trying to install everything back you should try the repair function of seus/pc companion, as many people have reported to gettin the latest firmware from it somehow!!

Well I'm not sure what you're using to back up your contacts, but some apps will restore your contacts and if you happen to restore again, the contacts will duplicate. Another case would be that you've backed up your contacts, then restored them, and you happen to have a google account set up on your phone. Google sync will upload your contacts and therefore causing you to have duplicates, or even triplicates in your case.
What I would suggest is go to your gmail account (if you don't have one, then I suggest you do because it's awesome), then click contacts and organize your contacts there. There is an option for you to merge duplicates or triplicates on that page. ***This is on your computer browser, not on your x10***
Next time you format your phone, simply enter your gmail info on your x10 and your contacts will sync automatically.
In regards to the speed, I suggest doing a clean wipe and seriously consider rooting your phone. Depending on your social needs with the phone, you may need your phone to run at a higher speed and you can tweak that on a rooted phone.
hey guys cheers for the replys,
I had a look into wot you both suggested, i was sync-ing to SE so i switched it to google and seems to hav done the trick, phone seems to picked up its pace a bit now ( think maybe cos off the whole duplicating contacts ) i hav considered rooting but little nervous off doing it,
cheers guys for the help and advise, hav u got and tips, advise on rooting, how easy/hard is it to do, yes im bit off a nebie to all this kinda thing

Honestly, the first time I did root... it took me 8 hours lol, and I didn't even do it correctly. Now I've rooted the phone about 5 times now and i think it is very simple now. There are many tutorials in the developers thread that you could follow. Don't be afraid of trying new things, sometimes you have to take risks.
I really do suggest rooting though.
i really am coming round to the idea off rooting, im fairly confidant on the computer, jus more concered but and damage on the phone as i cost me as it wasnt a contract upgrade, so not worried about warranty jus dont wanna bugger the phone up
To be honest I've done it loadsa times.. I've found it easy since more or less beginning. to be honest the first ever time I thought I messed my phone but always was a work around. you shouldnt really have a problem cause you can keep flashing til you get it right.. but its all upto you!! I much prefer my phone rooted, more things to do, better backup apps, and I don't have to see none of that Se crap lol

Possible to port the new Gmail app to our Vibrant?

The new Gmail app looks pretty slick. Would this require an entirely new ROM with the newer Gmail version, as presumably Gmail is so integrated with the sytem. Or, would it be a simple matter of extracting removing some files with root access and installing the new Gmail app (apk).
where have you seen new app for gmail ?
Yea, what are you talking about? The only new thing in Gmail I know about is the Priority Inbox, thats is browser only though, for right now at least.
Yeah, I can't seem to find it now.
I did come across it on one of the blogs I believe a while back. I think it was pulled from one of the recent ROMs. The reply buttons were at the top (no need to scroll to bottom) and other minor improvements were present.
Will let you know if I find it.
http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/08/updated-gmail-app-version-221-brings-improvements-to-htc-evo.html
and here is the apk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7597129&postcount=11
I haven't tried the newer app, as I'm sure you would need to root access to overwrite the existing, and even, I'm quite sure something would break.
Alright, so whos going to flash it and see if it breaks anything lol? Come on we need a tester
I just read in that thread it only works for Android 2.2. But, no one has tried it yet to my knowledge using 2.1.
The gmail app was one of the new features of 2.2. I wouldn't try it on 2.1. Most importantly it includes copying text from an email.
It is just another thing we have to wait for in 2.2.
Patience is everything especially if it means you could possibly brick your phone. Gmail is the least of my worried when it comes to this phone so I don't care if it works or not.
Received a parse error upon trying to install it.

Hacked phone but need a little bit of help

Just bought an hd2 running both the 6.5 windows, and froyo android 2.2 build, need a bit of help in figuring out this 1 problem which is;
When go to the Android Markey it is still on the sellers account, and I tried to remove his account, but It says since it would need his account for some apps to run id have to set my phone back to factory settings, thus erasing everything. Is there any way around this, if not, could I back up all my contacts to my gmail account (if so, how so) and also from that point, would I have to re hack my phone?
Thanks alot in advance , really grate ful for any help.
Sounds like you bought your phone off a bit of an idiot! There's NO way that I'd let someone else own my phone without clearing everything that is mine off it.
Anyway, have a read of this...

thanks alot man, and yes lol I wouldnt be as mean to call him that, he was quite nice and professional, I believe he just forgot as he wasnted to sell the phone asap..
Also, how do I back up my contacts to my gmail account? and link my contacts to their facebooks?
**** still not working! do i need to clear more apps?
I think you've probably already backed up your contacts. The problem is, you've probably backed them up to his google account!
I think google should be your first port of call here. Not being funny, but you clearly haven't searched this, as I found that link I gave you by searching for 'android change google account'.
I also found this one...
http://www.sizzledcore.com/2009/12/27/how-to-remove-change-google-account-from-android/
Do a bit of searching - the answer is out there!
The ironic thing is it probably takes more time and effort to create a forum account, and then post a 'help me!' thread which you then have to monitor and reply to, then it does to simply type your problem description into google.
Especially now google instant has been launched, you don't even have to press return.
Actually I tried all those methods and will now try to reboot te phone in recovery mode o guess then if that fails I may have to factory reset an re hack

[Q] About taking in a phone to get contacts synced from sprint?

Ok so i have a question, i have an older sister up in a different state and my dad bought her a brand new epic for xmas. Its not activated yet til she gets it obviously so i was wondering:
1. if i sent it to her rooted so i can give her mobile ap and custom kernal all that fun stuff, will sprint know anything if they are just transfering contacts from her old sanyo pink regular phone?
2. Can it be rooted before activation?
Would Greatly appreciate someones insights,
Thanks
I don't know about sprint but it doesnt effect verizon. All it is is cellbrite

only thing about rooting her device and putting all the cool stuff on it is... she's going to have to do all the updates manually. do you trust your sister to do that? if so, go crazy. i sent my brother a pre rooted EVO and he's still running 2.29something. doubt he'll ever make it because he doesn't have the patience to sit on aim with me while i walk him through it and he's dumb as a brick (too dumb to brick it, even)
butttt i work at a sprint store and i'd ask her about her mod and which one it was.. i wouldn't report her or anything.. in fact, there is no protocol to do so. they just don't support the devices - eg. you wont get her screen replaced if bad software killed it under warranty if they can find evidence of tampering with the software
lol but i would support it. then again, im here

U mean the 2.2 update? i dont think she will care that much honestly.
i know i will tell her how to flash stock stuff and ill do it for her or tell her bf to do the stock flash.
so if she is just getting contacts transfered they shouldnt give her any trouble if its rooted, i mean it will look stock. just have mobile ap on it.

Oh ones that can get them from a sanyo regular phone to the computer or what? Which apps would work?
Anyone got any answer about rooting b4 activation? Will it still activate if it's rooted?

There is numerous ones out there just Google transferring phonebook software. I can't remember what I used to have when I worked for T-Mobile something along the lines of Data Pilot I think but don't quote me. Not sure about the rooting question though. I've had the opportunity to root before activating. If you do root before you activate and it does work let me know for future reference please and thank you.
I found it easier to manage my contacts via Google Contacts instead of trying to clean up transferred data from my 4 year old flip phone.
What I did in Google Contacts:
Created a new group labeled "Android"
Cleaned up, added, removed contacts (Initial cleanup took 2 hours, subsequent cleanup is now only 1 minute.)
Assigned the "Android" group to those I wanted in my contact list in the phone.
What I did in the phone itself:
Went into the contact preferences and selected "only show contacts with #s"
Deselected all of the groups from Google Contacts and only selected "Android" to sync
Then I linked Facebook to my phone to allow the auto-sync (for contact photos)
Finally I manually attached FB accounts to contacts that didn't auto-sync
When I want to add a new number, I add it to my Google account from the phone's contact manager, then later just add the "Android" group via the Google Contacts website.
This was the easiest method I found to keep my contact list clutter free, while still utilizing Google Contacts to it's full potential.
