After a pretty bad experience and almost loosing all my contacts with the basic export contacts feature, I decided to do what I should have done in the first place...
Is there a decent app that allows you to export all contacts (to an excel doc for ex.) after which you could edit them from the PC and import them back on to the phone? Doing this without loosing linked contacts and synced to FB.
Why don't you use Google contacts?
Do you have a Gmail account?

can you export from phone contacts to google contacts easily or do you have to add them manually to google contacts?
Do you have a Gmail (/Google account). If so plus you connected it to your phone than it's very easy.
Which phone/version of android do you have?

Ofcourse Google itself is the best option.
But there is an app which exports all contact in to once single .vcf file.
Try searching marketplace.

Exporting to .vcf is the method I used without any app installed, using the phone's basic function, but after reimporting back I lost the FB synced contacts and besides opening and editing the .vcf file in excel is not so user friendly

I have an account and I will probably try it also, using android 2.1-update1.
www.google.com/contacts
Yea it worked great with google in 15 minutes or so... wish I thought of that before wasting 2 hrs with other methods
That's fine. You'll see the true benefit of this method soon. ;-)

Ok, so: my main goal is to load my contacts that I saved on an app called iDrive Lite from my iPhone 3GS.
I now have my Vibrant. I am able to load my contacts on to my Vibrant using the iDrive Lite app from the marketplace no problem. However, once the phone gets restarted...those contacts are gone. And they will not sync with Google, for whatever reason. So my next guess is to try and use an app called UIA Backup Contacts....which should let me back up my contacts that I have currently on my phone (after using iDrive to restore) and I should be able to save as a CSV and email to myself, and upload to my Gmail account.
Well, when I try doing this, it backs up to about 44%, and I get this error:
Sorry! The application Backup Contacts (process no.uia.android.backupcontacts) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. dumpstate_app_201009022121_no_uia_android_backupcontacts.log has been saved. Use *#9900# to copy out log. and all I can click is force close.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this? I don't want to manually add my contacts if I do not have to.
Apparently no one knows, 40 views and no replies.
Bump....
Can you export those to a pc then use that pc to add them into gmail via your desktop? Then they would be in your contacts.

Not sure...have not tried. Don't know how to do that either?
Ok so I figured out I can't export either. I try and it can't read my contacts when I try to import. Only imports my manually added ones.

This calls for a bump.
there's the old fashioned way - covert to (iirc) .csv file and upload from your pc to google, and let google download them automatically or go do a sync manually (Menu > settings > accounts and synch)

I have tried both of these methods. The conversion didn't work, it didn't recognize the ones that I loaded from the iDrive Lite app. Only recognized the contacts I manually added.
Same with the syncing manually.
Additionally, I am unable to edit any of the contacts that I restored from iDrive Lite... it says:
Unable to edit SNS contacts on phone

Very strange.. but my other contacts that I sync with google or add manually, I can edit fine.
Hmm, still no solution.
Time for a bump.

Do you still have your 3gs? If so do a google sync backup to the google server then they will transfer to your phone. I have been doing this since my G1 and i went through two iphones and another not to be mentioned phone.
No I do not still have my 3GS.
Can you load the file into outlook then sync with Google?

For all those "bumps" you could spent that time doing research. A quick visit to their site reveals there is an android app. Since youve trusted them with your contacts already...install it on your vibrant and restore them from the idrive cloud. http://www.idrive.com/idrive-lite/index.html

Ill eat crow. I forgot you have already done that. My fault.
Try uninstalling the app and reinstalling it on your vibrant.

Is there any reasonably simple way to move all of my contacts to a PC, where I can easily remove duplicates and alter details and then replace them on my phone?
I use Outlook as my contact *manager and MyPhoneExplorer to sync them with the phone. But you could use just MPE to manage your contacts. I would mention Google but, even though I have an Android phone, I have no idea what using Google/Gmail/whatever is like for managing contacts.
Dave
I switched from outlook to Google when I moved from windows mobile to Android. If you go into Google contacts on your pc I'm pretty sure it has a feature to remove or merge duplicates.

+1 been using that app for a while now. It'll be easier if your contacts' name and their facebook name is the same. Otherwise, you have to manually link them.

Or just use the official facebook app.

Official facebook app on AOSP has option to sync all facebook contacts, or only sync existing contacts.

Google Contact Sync
A must have
I was running cyanogenmod, but I missed the ability to match contact suggestions.
The dialer too obviously, I know I can use an alternative dialer for this.
If there is a matched contacts method or app, I can dump sense for good.

Bump in the night.
You tried the facebook for android app? twitter app? They synch the contacts pictures and numbers off facebook and twitter, google account would have hopefully backed up your contacts as well so it will pull it from there as well, thats the same as matched contacts (Y) all matched contacts was,
TL;DR download facebook app from market, install, just go to account settings and add an account and make it a facebook one
?????
profit.
I have people such as my brother who have different names on facebook and twitter. This gives me two contacts where I want one.
Have you tried Gibt contacts? I remember it offers some kind of contact merging...

Gah... curse you, Auto correction. I meant Go contacts... should be included in Go dialer...

Where do android contacts store data locally? I mean the data of the contacts as vcf or whatever file on the phone.
And are the data in the same place with third party synced contacts like Facebook sync?
I believe that they are stored in the phone's internal memory
Sent from another dimension's communication device.
if you back up your contacts to a "v" card file saved on your pc then you can import/export to your hearts content.
or save em and update via google if you run a gmail account.
