Evo info - EVO 4G General

I have few questions about the Evo. Is anyone using the kindle reader software with the Evo? I was wondering how the 4.3" screen is for reading. Also how much does the siedio 3500mah battery add to the weight of the phone?

http://www.amazon.com/Seidio-Innoce..._1_5?ie=UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1279995906&sr=1-5
Shipping Weight: 3.2 ounces
Minus a little for packaging.

I love the Kindle app, and the big Evo screen really makes it easy to read. I especially like being able to change the background and fonts to 'night' mode. I can finally read in bed without my wife complaining about the light. I've also converted a bunch of PDF's using Mobi's converter, and the work great on the Kindle.

I was wondering about how the kindle app looked. I have a lot of prc's on my kindle 2 and if I get this phone I was wanting to use it to read. I have tried on my hero but the screen is just too small.

Love the kindle app. Use it more than my kindle!

Kindle on my EVO is awesome. I see no reason to actually use a hardware Kindle.

A100 Build Quality

How does the A100 feel compared to the A500 in the hand? Obviously lighter, but quality wise.
Quite nice actually. I have both, would say that the A100 is as nicely built as the A500. The plastic back feels solid, and the swoopy design on the back is pretty subtle. The power button is bigger and feels more solid. The volume rocker is as sorry as the A500. I swear it takes better photos too. The screen is fine, viewing angles at any angle I would ever use are OK. It's the worst looking at the bottom edge at like an 80 degree angle, and who does that? It also seems more evenly lit the the A500. Overall, I love the little thing. I don't carry the big one for work anymore.

How about the screen? I'm worried it'll be too skinny. When reading some PDFs or Kindle books I find the formatting of pics/diagrams easier to view in the "tall" orientation as opposed to "wide". I was worried the 7" might seem too pinched, otherwise the size is a blessing. 10 is just too big for the way I use it. iphone is too small and 10" is too big, so I'm thinking 7 will be the sweet spot.
sweet spot
Whooweee I wanna one if there is a sweet spot.OK seriously I think the 7 inch one would fit in better.fit in my purse. But I will have to wait for price to go down
Mde me realize I hadn't tried the Nook application on this thing yet. Fired it up with the default font, Looks fine in portrait mode, it's about the same as a paperback book. The chapter art and text don't feel pinched the all. I like it better than the 2 page landscape mode. It's too small for that. I'm giving it a thumbs up as an e-reader. I also got tired of the 10.1 inch monster. It's relegated to the living room laptop role. The A100 looks less silly using it to read at lunch than the half a laptop.

The gift card deal has expired on both the A500 & A100 even though it still says so on the web site untill you read the details and it gives the dates. $328 for the 8 gb wish they had the 16 gb.
I imagine this will be fixed but the Kindle app on the A100 (HC 3.2) FC's when you open a book. It doesn't do this on the A500 (HC 3.1)
I currently both and have to give one of them up. I still can't decide which one I want to keep. The A100 is much easier to hold and carry. Also HC 3.2 is suppose to scale better too. I find thing are small on the A100 but can pinch & zoom so I can read it better. I think a lot depends on what you want use it for.
Don't think you could go wrong with either one, they both have their good and not so good points.
I've got both too. Keeping them. Probably shouldn't. Didn't know Kindle didn't work. I Had an original Nook, so I usually buy books from them, that app works fine. I oddly have more problems with tablet specific apps than phone apps. Just checked my 3.2 updated A500. Kindle works fine. Weird.

I might pass the A500 off to the g/f, depends on what I can get for it. The A100 is basically a mini clone though right? Reading stuff online it has the USB, micro-SD, micro-HDMI and all that. How about the GPS? Any of you owners note issues like some had with the A500(slow to lock etc)
I have a samsung charge, all samsungs have crap GPS. Used to slow. I used the A500s once, seemed ok. Haven't tried the A100s yet. It really is a shrunk down A500. Can't wait for custom ROMS/kernels to really pimp it out.

Yea, it'll be interesting to see the battery life once it's got some OC/UV love. I crank my A500 way down to 600Mhz when I'm just reading PDFs or ebooks.
A100 doesn't have the full USB option so no connecting flash drive or keyboard. I have both the a100 and a500. I love them both. People complain of viewing angles but for me its no problem. I love how the a100 fits in my glove compartment and motorcycle tank bag.

I came to the A500 from a Viewsonic G Tab, that had bad viewing angles. Not impossible, but certainly not as good as an iphone or even the A500. I'm about to go pick up my A100 at Walmart, can't wait to come home and unbox it. I haven't seen a Kindle update claiming to fix the A100 problems. Has their been any OTA for the A100 that claims to fix them?

Amazon just delivered my A100 yesterday. So far, so good, but HoneyComb is going to take some getting used to.
Nothing wrong with the A100 for the price you can get one at. A true Honeycomb 3.2 tablet with a 1024 x 600 screen for just a little over the $249 Nook Color that struggles with honeycomb, and much less than the $499 HTC Flyer that only has one "extra" feature over the A100. And that'll cost you an additional $70 for the stylus required to use it.
I've posted my review of the A100 on my blog.

[Q] 7.7 as eReader

Hello to all, Im Xan and this is my first post
Id like to ask those o you who are already 7.7 owners how good the tablet is as an eReader.
how good the reading app included is? (I've watched some promo vids and it seemed a little laggy)
I think it has a "night" mode where the background turns black and the text is in white. Is it pitch black or just dark ? i mean, does that black gives some light?
Im a happy kindle owner but it has obvious limitations..since its not a tablet.
Tablets are good for a lot of things but almost all them use screen technology not suitable for reading
(so far the pixel Qi and mirasol tablets in the market have been a dissapointment)
This is the first tablet with a Samoled screen...thats why im asking how good it is as an ereader,
how it treats your eyes during a 90 min reading session? does the night mode makes things better?
Its a lot of money, so if im buying this tablet i want to kwow i can totally replace my kindle.
Thanks for your time
Dear xangroba,
I do not have the samsung 7.7, and I am a junior adviser, but I know the super amoled technology.
An e-ink reader as the kindle and the sony is the best solution to read since are not backlighted, so your eyes are not stressed after one work day with the PC, nightmode is nice but not the solution in my opinion.
Still I think I ll buy this new device because ezpdfreader and repligo are really cool, and manage annotations in a better way, and are continuosly updated.
I strongly suggest you to take both with you, in the end is less than 500 grams to bring around.
If you do not have a tablet samsung 7.7 is amazing in my opinion. No price to play chess, surf the web, annotate documents on the go, every avid reader could love this, epsecially in these "cloud" times
Reading on the 7.7 is fun. I read a lot and tried many ereaders, and this is finally device that meets all my requirements (light, gorgeous screen, fast, easy to hold with one hand ..yet a big screen)
To reduce eye strain I use an app that allows me to set a custom background. I have set it to a particular shade of gray so that the illumination and color corresponds to the color and illumination of light that is reflected by a book or paper.
The night mode is fantastic for reading in the dark. And of course because of the amoled screen it almost uses no battery power.
(Btw no reader app is laggy on this 1.4 ghz processor )
Thanks for the reply.
Can you tell me the name of the app you are talking? (or other similar apps for that matter...that you may know of).
so...can I induce (...ehem...deduce) that the eye strain problem is negligible to nonexistent?
perhaps youre talking about dimming, dimming its something you can do with other tablets, why the reading experience its better with this one?

Of course I set the brightness to a minimum. But that's not enough. The problem is the illumination of the background. This can be customized by setting a different background color (if you like induction : set the induction base to black
There are a lot of eReader apps that support custom backgrounds, including the stock ereader. I myself use the Aldiko eReader (but I want to work on one myself. I hate it that no ereader allows to define a "dead spot" where you can hold the tablet... but that's a different story)
I think the way the native ebook app on the 7.7 is kind of crappy. But, Aldiko Pro is awesome, and I've had no eyestrain reading several chapters at a time. Granted, it will not be as good as a Kindle or other e-ink reader, but if you tweak the brightness and fonts to your liking then it is very much usable.
im a barnes and nobel customer so i use the nook app, which works just fine. with a black background and the brightness all the way down its a joy.
black on a super amoled screen is ... actually black
I'd like to use one as a reader too, should I worry about the burn in effect?

Indeed. In fact, the Kindle app works fine enough on my old Tab (P1000) already. This doesn't seem to be a particularly system intensive piece of software.

Kindle Fire vs. Nook Tablet

I am looking at buying either one of these. I like the way the kindle fire looks better, but I don't like it's lack of sd card support. They both seem to have good development for rooted users and I plan on rooting. I am leaning towards the Nook, but haven't decided for sure yet. Please offer your opinions and why you would choose one over the other.

Personally I would go nook tablet. I have a fire because I bought it from some kid on craigslist for 100 dollars. Actually a 50 dollar bestbuy giftcard and 50 cash
This week at Walmart B&M stores only, you can get a Fire with a $50 WM GC, so basically paying $149 for the Fire. The Nook Color is $249 (but there is also a $25 GC if you are a MasterCard holder).

If the bootloader is truly unlocked, then go with the device that has the better Dev support. Check out both forum's and make your choice.
In my opinion the only real downside of the kindle-fire is the way too little 512mb of ram. Apart from that's its a gorgeous device. Its cheap, it feels good in hands, kinda pocket, it will fit in your pocket while the nook is fairly bigger, and it has pretty much the same hw as the nook has, apart from the 500mb of ram more (which is a damn good thing) and the SD slot which is definitely good if you need to increase storage. Although that doesn't really bother me much as 8gb are more than enough for me on a tablet, especially when you can benefit of 2.5gb of drop box, 50gb of box.net along with every other Google cloud services such as picasa, docs, Gmail etc.
Also, the kindle-fire has a better dev support so far, CM7 is way too damn good, we have a pretty stable ICS rom and it's still an early alpha, while the nook only offers an early CM7 alpha (for sure the locked boot loader had significantly slowed down the development).
So my advice is to go cheaper and actually to go for at some points a better device, indeed the kindle-fire
Maybe you are interested in reading some detailed comparison of the two:

Having a Fire myself I'm somewhat biased. The fire, quite frankly, is a bit heavy. I don't know how it compares to the Nook, but having played with an iPad2 before, the iPad _seemed_ lighter - maybe that was just my compensating for the larger form factor; the Fire feels like a brick in my hands - too heavy for its size.
But, I purchased it for a cheap tablet to play with Android, so really no major complaints.
And THANKS to all the devs that are working tirelessly to put ICS on the Fire - even as it stands now it looks/works great. Yes, yes, there are a few missing pieces, but I'm quite willing to overlook them for the moment.

I can second that. I actually bought a Nook Tablet first, then returned it and got the Kindle Fire instead. My wife still has a Nook Tablet of her own.
Looking up the specs, the Nook Tablet is only a tiny bit lighter than the Kindle Fire (400 g vs. 413 g), but it is lighter, and larger. It feels much lighter because of the materials they use - it has a nice soft, almost padded edge around the screen, and the screen is set in from the face of the device so you won't accidentally touch it. All in all the Nook is probably a better device for reading or if you value ergonomics highly.
I ended up with the Kindle mainly because I wanted the larger developer community, the lower price, and because I don't need SD card storage. Some people need it, but I don't. I didn't notice any difference in performance so apparently the lower RAM on the Kindle doesn't actually change much.
They're both good though. I think the largest, most important distinctions are the price and the SD card slot. Take those into account before anything else.

The Kindle Fire is miles ahead in terms of the speed of homebrew development, thanks to its unlocked bootloader. You could root it and install a custom ROM today if you went and purchased it. The locked bootloader on the Nook Tablet slowed development down a lot, but I'd say the developers working on it have done amazing things so far; it shows promise.
My Nook Tablet is running the CM7 alpha that Celtic released a few days ago but the ROM was taken down because Celtic wants a more polished ROM to be available to users. Both have unlocked bootloaders but the Kindle, having been more hack-friendly, already has a full CM7 release and the Ice Cream Sandwhich/CM9 development seems to be going swimmingly as well. The previously-locked bootloader is indeed what slowed down Nook Tablet homebrew devs.
The NT dev community's catching up, but if you're a bit more impatient and want a cool 7-inch Android tablet right away, go with the Fire. If you're more patient and don't mind waiting, the Nook Tablet has better hardware all around and is well worth the $50 more that it costs. It weighs a little less, its battery lasts a little longer, it has double the RAM and expandable micro-SD storage. I'm also told that the screen resists glare better than the Fire's, but I haven't had a chance to play with the Fire much myself so I can't judge that aspect.
tl;dr: If you want a great hacked Android tablet right now, go with the Fire. If you can stand the wait a little longer, go with the Nook Tablet. The Nook Tab devs have been making amazing progress so a release of CM7 is probably not far off (maybe this month!) but like I said, you could have CM7 on a Kindle Fire today.
I looked at both devices before I made my purchase, and price was not a considering factor cause when I went shopping the NT was on sale for the same price as the KF, I just like the look of the KF better, plus I like Kindle as a name, my name being kinda close to it too. That and some of my friends have the KF and they love it, and they told me the Dev section on XDA was ahead of the NT. Support is a major factor for me when I get a device.
My dad has a 200 dollar 'tablet' with a bigger screen and all that, but the support for it is awful. He plays order and chaos online like I do and he can't get it to run on his device, or other gameloft games, where as I have the game on mine.

why get a nook? "a nook can't read so a nook can't cook. so what good to a nook is a hook cook book?" -Dr Seuss
I actually traded my Dell Streak 7 for the Fire and like it, but if I was buying it, I would go with the Nook Tablet. I just got a coupon good till the end of the month for $50 off either a Nook Color OR Nook Tablet (so $149 and $199). Dang tempting, but I gotta quit buying tablets until one comes out that fits all my needs...and honestly, as fun as the Fire is and the Nook probably is...without a front camera for Skype and stylus support, neither will cut my mustard. Also, I've had a Nook Color and I really like the feel of the Fire better. I'm pretty sure the Nook Tablet feels the same as the Color...for what that's worth.
I got the Fire because:
- neither it or the nook is a full featured tablet and the fire is cheaper (nook is too "middle ground" price/features)
- it doesn't weigh more than my hardcover copy of Harry potter 7, and is thinner and much smaller besides
- amazon sold a ton of them and isn't going anywhere, meaning lots of aftermarket support
- my phone and camera make up for the features it lacks; mainly I just wanted browsing, email, and IM without being stuck at my desk or at a wall (with my short-battery-life laptop)
I never do any videoconferencing.
A bluetooth keyboard would've been nice, but for the price I can do without.

I've read about 2-3 books on the Nexus 7 thus far and it is very easy to read and follow along. The iPad is wonderful for reading. Don't get me wrong I love the iPad. But, it's form factor just isn't for me. It's hard to imagine it as if it were a real book because it's so big. I don't exactly enjoy typing or playing games on it either because of its form factor. The Nexus 7 is a perfect device for those of us with the not-so-big hands that don't like stretching our fingers to type. It's also even better for reading because its size/weight is about the same as todays paperbacks.
I read my studying guide text book on my nexus 7 and I love it. The 7in size is perfect for hand held, weight and size wise and the screen size is still big enough too.
My primary use for the N7 is reading. Tried several other tablets and this one is by far the best. PDFs are not great though; unless the text is condensed in the middle of the page (and your reader autozooms) it's not fun to read either tiny print or scrolling a lot in landscape. But resizable text can't be beat. Get mantano reader.

I greatly enjoy reading books on the N7. Since I got mine at the end of July, I've re-read almost all the Sherlock Holmes mysteries on it. One thing that helps me with reading books on the N7 (especially at night) is changing the text in whatever app I'm reading in to white text on a black background.
I've played around with quite a few of my friends iPads and from what I've seen, the N7 is better suited for reading, while the iPad is better for watching videos.
Hope that helps.

I'm not completely happy with any PDF reader on android. For example, I like to zoom in as much as possible without having to scroll left and right. I often zoom in so that the margins are off screen and text is almost edge-to-edge, but invariably I end up scrolling left or right a bit while trying to scroll vertically. How about an option to lock the horizontal position? I'm much happier reading a native mobi format book in the Kindle reader. Maybe I'm just weird.
The part about the pdf files worry me as I know I have some material I need to read that are in pdf format. Is it really that bad?
I agree with Opcow. Reading PDF's can be a challenge because it doesn't reposition text when you zoom in like an eBook does. So, if you need larger fonts you will have to scroll left and right as well as up and down.
For ebooks though, its awesome. I like it better than the Kindle Fire which I owned for a while. Yet, for long reading sessions, I still use my Kindle Touch...but, I digress...

Your mileage will vary with pdf files I think. I tried to read a magazine pdf (lots of graphics as you'd imagine) and it would stutter/freeze for as long as 10 seconds when trying to scroll. I think this was in Aldiko book reader.
And then in Adobe Reader, I read a PDF file that was light on graphics, but Adobe would take a while to render the text clearly after going to next page. It's annoying.

For pdf's Mantano lets you set for each book the R & L margins and the headers & footers. I use calibre on a PC to store, index etc. ebooks It also does some pretty powerful format conversions.
Here's my opinion. If you are going to be reading a lot of PDFs then go for the iPad 3. That screen is awesome. However, I like the 7 inch screen much better for eBooks.

Lol becuase iOS is terrible when it comes to customization. Its a 4x4 grid of block icons.. its not hard to screw up :S. Honestly i wouldnt ever suggest any apple product. This screen is subpar to the ipad's retina its not as good but its definetly up there. Our screen density is like 226 and the ipad is like ~260 but that thing is a honker.. if all your doing is reading PDF's i would go with the Nexus 7 its much lighter and text is clear as day.
Also.. this might persuade you.. if you ever drop your tablet.. look what 600$ gets you compared to 250$
Definitely not all I'm doing, would like to think of it as entertaining as well whether viewing movies or games here and there. Another thing that made me think about the ipad was that there is this cable app from my provider that is especially made for the ipad/iphone and you can view your subscribed cable channels right on your device where it doesnt work on android like that. There is even a pc app that you can do the same thing, and I tried to use my sgn to remote connect to my pc to view the channels but it was pretty messy as you could imagine. Not sure why they cater to ipad/iphone so much and leave out android. I'm sure this app looks pretty good on the ipad/iphone. Not sure if anyone has been able to use the optimum cable app on their nexus 7 yet. It would be pretty cool to be away somewhere with wifi and view some NFL games. Also, can you tether undetected with the nexus 7 and the samsung galaxy nexus?

Not really but i would think the newer the better. I just returned my C80k and got a c60k with the same exact issue.. nothing different just a small little lift which is an adhesive issue.. and i have found a fix for it. Im done looking for a perfect model and just going to deal with the one i got now and fix it. I should have kept the one i had but its whatever.

[Q] Thinking of buying Nexus7 to replace Kindle Fire HD - worth it?

I got a Kindle Fire HD the other day - at first I loved it but the mods amazon have done to android are starting to annoy me now. I've rooted it and installed another home screen (go launcher HD) but getting simple things done involves messing about and hacking that I would rather not have to do. I'm considering buying a Nexus7 now - not sure if i'll be able to take the kindle back for a refund or just have to take a financial hit there. My question is, is it worth doing? Is the Nexus a lot better?
Cheers
Dean
I went from the regular Kindle Fire to the Nexus 7 [gave the Fire to my mom...]. I was torn between the Fire HD and the Nexus, but decided on the Nexus to give me a full Android experience. I can still use the Kindle app to read books and Amazon's MP3 app to give me access to my music which is all stored on Amazon's cloud. For me, this was the right choice.

The Nexus 7 will give you all the pure Android experience, and all the freedom that goes with it, but you may find the screen on the Kindle Fire HD to be better:

I have a Nexus 7 and it was a no-brainer for me. The kindle HD is nice, but I like the full Google experience. Plus you're more likely to see updates because you won't have to go through proprietary companies before Google pushes an update. I got my wife the HD and she loves it. But she reads mostly and she likes Amazon Prime's free book per month thing. We compared video playback using Netflix. The HD was just a tad brighter, but the colors and resolution looked better in the Nexus. The HD is a nice tablet...but if you like customization and care about updates - the Nexus is the way to go.
There may be someone like you that had a Nexus and wants the HD...try CL to see if someone will trade. Otherwise, sell the HD (you should still be able to get a good price) and if you have some Xbox out PlayStation games you don't want, trade them in at GameStop and use the credit towards a Nexus. Yes, they sell the Nexus there. That's where I got mine and used the game credit to get the 16GB version.
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone - I think I'll go for the Nexus and either sell the kindle or give it to a family member - Guess you'll be seeing a lot more of me around this section once I get it
Been comparing these two for ages.
Differences are:
1. Build quality. Kindle appears to be a better build (I've used both).
2. Screen. Kindle is better, especially for reading and at different angles
3. WiFi. Kindle is dual band and is faster
4. Sound. Kindle is dolby stereo and better
5. Innards / CPU. Nexus has a faster CPU and GPU, with some games specifically optimised for it. Kindle I used appeared to have significant lag at times.
6. OS. Kindle uses a skinned version of an earlier version of Android. It cannot do everything the Nexus can and is not as compatible with things the Nexus is. The Nexus is likely to get the latest android updates, the kindle may never get them.
7. Play Store: The Kindle uses its own store and has less apps in it. Many apps will not work with the Kindle.
8. Google Play Music: This is not supported currently on the Kindle
9. Camera. The camera on the Kindle cannot be used as a camera as no app currently exists for it. This is not the case with the Nexus
10. GPS. The Kindle does not have a GPS in it (Kindle Fire HD does, but has no apps to use it as yet)
11. HDMI Out: The Kindle has this. The Nexus does not.
12. Charger. The Nexus comes with a charger. The kindle you have to buy one seperatley or use a slower USB to microusb charger.
13. Size. The Kindle is a little larger. This makes it harder to hold in one hand or pocket easily. However, it gives a nice bezel to hold while reading
14. Battery. Kindle battery life is on paper slightly better than the Nexus. (11.5 vs 9.5 hrs)
15. NFC. Nexus has it. Kindle does not.
16. Magnetometer. Nexus has it. Kindle does not
17. Bluetooth. Nexus has it. Kindle does not - bit odd leaving that out.
So... the Nexus is better, but possibly not as well built and does not have as good sound or screen. Its also possibly going to be stuck on its current OS level and not get all the new and nice upgrades. Your favourite apps may not work on it.
If it annoys you, then you will be happy with the N7!!!!
I was in the exact same shoes and I'm extremely happy I made the switch. No matter how you say it, the KFHD is nothing but a gimped android device with the amazon system running, including using custom launcher.
Dev's are working on a boot strap for the KFHD but it's still in early development and not to mention waiting for (stable) rom.
You'll be happy with the N7 out of the box.
