There's no way to get the homescreen to rotate unless you download launchers such as launcher pro or adw.

hmmm i guess ill have to go with another launcher, thanks!

the captive has the home screen rotation?

When I launch avatar it automatically rotates the screen and then stays that way to display the drm warning. Not really a fix, more of a bug you could take advantage of of you just want it rotated for games. As a real solution I would recommend launcher pro.

How does one benefit from swiping through their home screens in landscape mode?

Another thing that proves people like what they like. I hate my homescreen to rotate. I use LauncherPro and disabled it.

^ that could have been my post exactly.

To each his own, I guess. This really bothered me, so I started using Launcherpro and can't see myself going back...Touchwiz is pretty good, but coming from my G1 running CM6, it made me feel too locked down.

Technically speaking, TouchWiz changes much more than just the launcher and home screen.
Using a custom launcher only overwrites the TouchWiz launcher, it doesn't remove TouchWiz altogether.

Honestly I really like the fact that the home screen does not rotate. It was one thing that used to drive me a little bonkers with some of the G1 builds. Do I flip it left or do I flip it down.
Of course that was just my opinion of course.

Well, for me personally it would be nice if it rotated while I have it sitting on my desk dock. That would be about the only time I would want it to.

HOME screen Rotation
I am running froyo Jpm on the S and I am really missing the HOME screen rotation, Really. And was hoping and hoping with all my heart that someone from xda dev could come up with a home screen rotation fix.. If someone has please point me in the right direction and also one more thing Home Screen rotation Rocks!haha. And it should be there when you wont it.. So please help us home screen rotation Lovers. Thanks

Reason to have landscape.
I have a phone case that has a kickstand allowing for my phone to be set long ways (on its left hand side, so the cable is coming out of the left at the bottom of the phone) because when I stand it up and plug it in it jsut falls over all the time. (The USB cable that came with the phone is REALLY stiff, compared to the MTS3GSlide/Cliq/G1) So it would be really nice if it would go to landscape mode allowing for horizontal scrolling across screens ( I guess that the widgets would also have to be able to handle on the fly the switch betweens[ can that even work?] or be removed) And also have the status bar be across the top (like normal) while it sets sideways. I mean most of the games, video players etc already auto switch to landscape so you can have the width to handle the frames anyway. And so that when my phone is on its side (which is roughly 9 hrs/day minus lunch and smoke breaks) I can still read the stuff properly. I guess that the pulldown on the status bar would also have to work and so on. I wish I knew enough programming to make this happen myself. But that is the ONE biggest thing I miss the most about the G1, landscape homescreens. I'd seriously take that over a lag fix any day.

(Concept) Seamless homescreen replacer

I have a concept homescreen replacer where there are no "pages", instead there is one single horizontal scrolling strip, much like a film strip. Think Windows Phone 7, but with widgets, icons, folders etc and horizontal.
Look at the attachment if you dont understand. I would put the image in the post but I cant post outside links yet.
Yes, it is possible to see half a widget, but I thought about it and decided it will be to the user to scroll so it is displayed right.
I have no experience in coding but I am pretty good in graphics like my picture
Tell me what you think
I've been thinking about and attempting to create (with limited success so far.) something similar to your home replacement but Vertical Scroll rather than horizontal. To give you an idea it would look similar to The Zune Launcher or the but also be able to take widgets. Again no snap to screen (cant figure that bit out).
Good luck with this, it would be interesting to see what experiences you gain and what problems you run into. Similar to you I am fantastic with graphics but not too good at coding (not done any since C++)
When I "jailbroke" my ipod ages ago, there was a tweak that was called "smooth scrolling" and it did the exact same thing described here. I think it would be awesome to have a free-scrolling home screen. I am working on a home replacement myself and it features a vertically scrolling home screen where the icons and widgets can be placed anywhere (not snap to a grid). If you would like to help, click on the logo in my signature to be taken to my site to see what I am working on. I could use a hand in graphics, myself. PM me if you're interested
I would prefer something that is like infiniboard for iOS
This would technically allow widgets to stretch past the 1 page limit in LauncherPro, as in, you could have widgets large enough that they cut off, allowing for some GREAT theming and future uses.
hmmm....interested but why vertical? feels a little to Windows Phone to me and i think widgets would work better scrolling horizontally. I looked up smooth scrolling for iOS and yep thats what i want with widgets and gridless.
I just want to subscribe to this and give my two cents:
I think any seamless homescreen app should still have the option at least of enabling a grid for apps and widgets. The idea of this as a functioning homescreen replacement could certainly get me to switch over from ADW, but only if it could satisfy my OCD needs for everything to be lined up juuuust so.
I think this would be a great thing to have, but I also would like to have an option for the widgets & apps to line up on a grid. while it is great to have the seamless scrolling (preferably horizontal & not vertical...maybe there could be an option for that as well) I like things to line up too.
I could definitely make that an option for my home-replacement. I just want to know what people would want out of a home replacement so that I can model mine around the general consensus of what everybody wants. Oh, and why does everybody want vertical scrolling? Because its different. Sure Windows phone 7 has it. But it does it in its own way. Android is know for its open-ness and widgets. The wonder of Android is that anyone can do anything with Android, and its free.
At first I want to say that the idea of a seamless lauchner is brilliant.
I had that idea by myself but I have no experience in programming.
I think I would prefer somewalls original concept with icons that fit into a grid and horizontal scrolling. To me it seems to be more useful on portrait format screens compared to vertical scrolling.
But anyway, I hope the best for you guys.
I think vertically scrolling widgets will work buggy this way. Unless there would be some kind of listener that stops the horizontal scrolling when interacting with a vertically scrolling widget.
Else both ways of scrolling will interfere.

I like the idea, it's something that I would love to have on my phone! Just one suggestion.. I would like to see both horizontal and vertical scrolling, if it could be developed. As in, the user decides what kind of scrolling he wants, either vertical, horizontal.. or may be both? I don't if it's possible or not, I have no "serious" coding experience, as you may call it since am just in school!

[Q] Screen Rotate 180

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a way to rotate the screen from the normal portrait view by 180 degrees?
I am using my Note with a bottom hinged Noreve case (which I love) and this rotation would allow me to use the case as a stand?
Thanks
Even if there is this possibility, consider this: several times you'll answer the phone in the dark and wonder why that asshole in the other side isn't saying anything for the third time, then you realize the phone was upside down. That happened a lot with me and my old Atrix =p

i dont think the stock touchwiz will rotate but apps should rotate if you have enabled it and the app supports it

[Q] Nexus 7 homescreen-does it rotate?

Does the stock nexus 7 home screen rotate like a regular android tab into landscape or portrait, if not then i will need to get a launcher to remedy that problem. Does anybody know if that could be changed to have the homescreen rotate, if it cannot?
It does rotate as usual.

I have gone through every video I could find on youtube and not one of them showed the tablet with its home screen in landscape mode.
This review says it was clearly meant for portrait only because most apps dont rotate. I wonder if all the demo units just had auto rotate turned off?

There's an icon on the notification bar that locks the orientation to portrait or landscape or lets you have it free, most likely the presentation unit had it locked to portrait. Must say it would be weird as heck for a tablet to be made for portrait mode.
Also, awmagawd, the first review has a white version of the Nexus7, love it.

I haven't seen any video showing landscape mode either. But soon enough custom launchers will be updated for JB and the problem will be solved. Nova and apex are updated quite frequently and I would assume they have plans to implement the new Jelly Bean features.
I've read reviewers who've stated that it does NOT rotate the home screens. I suppose they all could have missed the rotation lock, but it could easily be just for apps.

hopefully nova will update by the time that the things gets in all of our hands.

That's an APP rotating, people are talking about the 'launcher'...
I use my tablets in landscape more then portrait, so although I trust all rotatable apps will be fine, it's disjointing to go back to the launcher and have it 90 degrees out..
The Verge said,
One thing that struck me as odd, however, is the fact that the homescreen doesn’t have a landscape view. As in, you cannot turn the tablet to landscape when you’re on the homescreen. It’s actually a bit frustrating when you move from a landscape app back home — and I can’t figure out why Google would have removed this functionality, which was present in Honeycomb.
What I find mostly odd about not having a landscape launcher mode is the fact that the pins on the side for the to be released dock would allow the tablet to be docked in landscape! Perhaps there will be a separate dock launcher?

It will look a little silly sitting in the dock Asus announced today.
I have jellybean installed on my Galaxy Nexus and the homescreen rotates perfectly.
so i don't understand why it wouldn't rotate for them unless autorotate was off.
My TF does it but my Galaxy Nexus never has (and it doesn't on Jelly Bean either). I think it's one of the differences between 'phone mode' and 'tablet mode'.
3rd party hacks can enable homescreen rotating on ICS so it won't stay fixed for long.
Google wants n7 to be used in portrait on the home screen and it does not rotate idk why they did this but its something that can be changed by devs.

You guys think this is just for applications?

Can you disable the on screen buttons to use the full screen?

I want to get the Nexus 4 but only if I can disable those buttons as all the videos I see they turn invisible in full screen apps but you're left with a black bar instead of the full screen working. I'm worried that it is at a hardware level and you'll never be able to disable them so you can have the full use of the screen. It's such a big downer seeing the phone compared to other phones and how much space those buttons take.
Thanx.
Edit: I don't want it where I have to go into a menu to switch them on or off. I want them to hide themselves when I haven't got my finger in the area so I can quickly use them, otherwise it would get annoying having to keep manually turning them on and off.

Not built into Android? You'd have thought it would be a feature that would be one of the first to make it in.
In some roms you can make them smaller, but disabling doesn't make sense because you cannot control your phone without them.
Maybe a toggle in the powermenu(longpress power) would be a compromise.
You can use GMD Gesture control from the play store if you dont want to have to flash a ROM to do this. All you do is swipe with three fingers up from the bottom of the screen and BOOM they disappear. You can make your own gesture to do this too!
I use LMT Launcher on my Galaxy Nexus, my navbar is enabled like 95% of the time. Hopefully someone can come up with a mod to hide the navbar.

This is very easy to do. Not sure in JB 4.2, but in JB 4.1.2 all you have to do is remove these lines out of the build.prop:
launcher.force_enable_rotation=true
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
Make sure to use something like LMT Launcher pie control to replace the on screen buttons. This is by far my favorite setup as I can not stand on-screen buttons taking up screen real estate.
Edit... Someone may want to confirm this on a stock rom as I'm not seeing this in AOKP.

J Touch app for navigation rocks

Hey friends
I really don't like the navbar which is reducing the screen to much, so I decided to install J Touch app from playstore.
Loaded a nice looking home button jpeg picture from the web. Give the button a one hit back function, a long press home function and a swipe up for recents.
Please see attached pictures navigating is nice and I whish I could even eliminate the navbar on the homescreen

No I don't think so. There is transparency setted, the button is popping if hitted and it is shifting up on home screen. You could be as scared or even more about a status bar burn in...
and look how much time is needed:
"Test Results
The iPhone X displayed burn-ins before the Galaxy Note 8 at 17 hours. However, it took 510 hours for the images to become permanently etched on its display which also marked the end of the test.
Compared to that, the Note 8 took 62 hours to show first signs of display burn-in, which is impressive. However, it had permanent marks way before the end of the test. The Galaxy S7 Edge showed signs of burn-in sooner than the iPhone X, however, it showed permanent burn-ins much later than the Note 8 and almost at iPhone X’s 510 hour mark."

Ok so would you recommend the app over navigation gesture? The gesture is not polished at the moment I'll give the app a go

I think so, you can also activate temporary move, which is helpful is s.th. is hided by the button. So you can move the button away for two seconds. You can hide button always in landscape, it is hiding when you are keyboard typing... it is perfect for 18:9 displays.
If navbar would have a one button control too, I wouldn't use J Touch.
You can also give it an iPhone look but ok I guess everybody is hating apple .
Edit: Ah ok you mean gesture. Sorry I didn't have this option until now.... don't know what is better
Looks like a nice app. I prefer LMT Launcher though as you can set it to do almost any task and only comes on the screen when you activate it so creates a really clean look with extra functionality.
Or you could try Gesture Control from Conena.. I'm very happy with the way the gestures work

Not sure. Not really a fan of stock. From other forum members, it's possible to disable it with the joneplustool app. Both that and LMT require root.
I've been using Swipe Navigation. It even has long press functionality. Loving it so far.
That looks bat **** ugly, why don't you just download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.suphi.swipenavigation&hl=en ?

Xposed Edge anyone?
