typically xvid is avi, h.264/avc is mkv format, but mkv is just a container and can contain any video codec

Rockplayer works better some avi formate wont play in the stock media player.

this phone has played every combination of movie i have on my computer. the only thing rockplayer plays that the stock video player doesnt is real media video. I'm selling my 32gb walkman soon lol

my phone doesn't play some mkv's because their audio codec is not supported

I played some Community which is a tv show in avi played fine
Played 300 which is a 480rip in avi played fine
Played Repomen 720rip in avi played fine
All are Divx encoded
Both 300 and RepoMen are both 5.1 and they played fine
I couldn't ask for anything more at this current time.

Mkv with h264 and sac audio didn't play but mp4 with same plays fine . Has anybody seen this?

MKV files
What is the best combination... I use mkv files...I convert my dvd's to just under 2 gig mkv's...They play fine on rockplayer but says its sorry that the file can't be play...
I download an hd mkv off the net and it plays perfectly...any sugestions. btw I use handbrake. Is there a specific bitrate I should use?

videos on n1

what video types are supported on the n1?
if needed, if tehre some converter to "convert" the files on comp to what can be used on the n1?
Natively, mp4. Can be encoded using Handbrake.
If you download Rock Player though, it can play just about any file type.
Yeah, defaultly only mp4 is supported, but with rockplayer you can play any logical video type.
mp4 only eh? hmm
i tried copying over avi, mkv, mp4, and rmvb. i got rockplayer too (was just lookin around market adn that was the first thing that popped up that sounded nice). everything by the rmvb was choppy. they all play find on the computer.
both the mkv and mp4 are 720p. the avi was 640x272. not sure what size the rmvb was. imma try recoding them with that one program mentioned above and trying again

be sure you have the right version of rockplayer running, their were three variants. Also, something that has a 720p resolution might be too strenuous for the nexus to handle, remember the nexus can only play up to a 480p resolution, it can play 720p but it wont benefit any vs a 480p version of the same clip.
Ohhh nice to know. Was playing 720. Will try 480

Video Playback Problem

I converted a 1080p video of iron man with Freemake to .mp4 format which eventually has a size of 3.19 GB. converted for android with a resolution of 800 x 480. It just doesn't want to play the damn video does anyone know how to fix this problem? G-force not in HD is played perfectly however it has a much smaller size.
Thnx in advance!
What video player are you using? have you tried rockplayer?
No no rockplayer however the standard video plaer should play .mp4 and it does for G-force however the HD video of 3.19 GB doesn't play how can this be?
maybe the encoding has not worked properly, or codecs are missing....
maybe you can try to download rockplayer from the market (it is free) and then play the files (I've had one file not play on the normal player, but it played perfectly on rockplayer.
When playing .mp4 the codes used should be h264 for the video and aac for the audio streams. The .mp4 is just the type of the container.

Hehe
Currently the DHD can't even play 720p .mkv videos
It will never be able to play 1080p, but 720p .mkv is certanly possible.
I hope when VLC finishes it's port to Android it will support hardware playback of .mkv on our phone
BTW The best player availible now is either Rockplayer or Vplayer (paid) if you're looking for stability and performance.

MKV 720p stutters and no sound

I was surprised to find that the Xoom will recognize MKV files. However, I tried 3 so far and all of them stutter and there is no sound.
wow thats a surprise. probably needs a codec
if it is like every other tegra 2 device it will do 720p mkv's as long as they are not High-Profile ones.... and most you "download" are high profile.... just need to reencode them.
which xoom player are you using? sometimes, the video formats played on xoom based on the player. if the player can't played the file well, you may try another one or just use a tool to convert mkv file to xoom compatible format

Can the Galaxy Tab play high-profile .mkv files flawlessly?

Can the Galaxy Tab play high-profile .mkv files flawlessly?
What I am talking about is 720p .mkv files with high bit rate ( 4,000+ kbps ) without DTS sound (just AAC sound) flawlessly?
The Xoom is having problem in this department.
Also, what player do you use? Default, or Rockplayer or others?
Standard video player plays 1080p and 720p without any problem...

i use mVideoplayer, like it that it can extract subtitles from mkv.
Stock video player has played everything for me fine

High bit rate 4mbps? Compared to what, a cellphone video? XD
I got the tab to read PERFECTLY a full hd beast peaking roughly at 40mbps. H264, obviously. Was an mp4, but i doubt that a container will make any difference, i did watch several 720p mkv on the tab anyway.
Oh, i almost forgot: all this with the built in player. Using rockplayer in software mode, that 1080p beast ran at 2-3 fps.

I have played 720p MKV file. But no player seems to play it smoothly. And most of them does not play the sound audibly.
Worse, the stock player do not even recognize the file type. H264 videos are flawless.
any suggestions for the MKV player?

I watched like 6 episodes of Panty and Stocking with the stock player. MKV with subtitles (i had to convert them into srt and put them outside the MKV container...) in 720p and clearly with h264 video and aac audio.
There is maybe something wrong with your player?

I've got some mixed results.
Most files play fine, 1080p or 720p, but it has problems with some files with only DTS or AC3 sound included.
While the galaxy tab is the best media playing tablet I've tried (not tried the archos 101) it failed to play a 720p blu ray rip with 9 reference frames I think it was encoded with matroska libraries later than 1.0
Stock Player is amazing. I cannot stress that enough. It can play 1080p and 720p high profile mp4 h.264 videos flawlessly. Only gripe is the non-support for > 2ch audio, but this can be easily remedied via an audio demux with Yamb -> downmix to stereo -> mux new audio with Yamb.
I don't even watch movies on my HTPC anymore, I just downmix the audio, leave the video alone, and paste the file unto my device.
That's.
how.
good.
it.
is.
I found that using Rockplayer universal with hardware decoding mode plays just as well as the stock play but with the added function of allowing you to choose which audio track to use. However if you have an integrated sub title track mvideoplayer is better. However what the device can play isn't limited to profiles, as I found the tab can play high profile but content encoded with some of the newer matroska libraries, it struggles with.

Native support for XVID and MKV files??

Is there current support or plans to support XVID and MKV files natively? Ive tried the "Rock Player" and its not very reliable.
mobo player plays avi's very well no jerkiness at all. it plays mkv's pretty well also. as far as natively, i have no clue...

I thought it was established that high profile H264 MKVs (pretty much 90% of what's floating out there) didn't play well on the TF101 because of the Tegra 2's shortcomings?

In 3.1 some of them play but with limited frame rate.
I was hoping for the same thing all the 720p files I have don't work,
It doesn't even see them as a video file,
Bit gutted that I have to convert them,
Strangely the Archos 101 plays all of them fine without any issues,
So not sure what the issue is or if it is codec related as the arches does have a archos cinema plugin installed..
I tried moboplayer and rockplayer at first. And i managed to play MKV's smoothly, but only when started from the gallery. When I open the same mkv directly from moboplayer or rockplayer the movie didn't play smooth at all. So I tried mVideoPlayer. After i installed mVideoPlayer my mkv's play smooth anyway I open them. The best part is that the stockplayer plays MKV's as well (but dosn't have support for subtitles).
But the main problem is that most mkv's have 5.1 sound, this is not supported, you can convert the soundtrack with mkvavi2mp4 or convert the whole movie with handbrake (takes a lot longer).
