Google Maps will force you to go online. There's no way to make Google stay offline. At least, none that i know of.
I use a free map program called NaviComputer. It comes with a desktop software which lets you download the maps you need. Any country. Any area. Up to whatever OpenStreeMaps have updated so far. You can then copy the downloaded maps to your WinMo Phone. Use the app offline all the time.
It basically works like Google Maps. Except without navigation, and other bells and whistles.
The maps are easier to use than Google's. Major roads, secondary roads, and other important details are highlighted in different colors. Making it very easy for your eyes to follow even if the device is at a distance. Say, mounted to your windshield or dashboard.

hi,
can we manage to do something to keep the images downloaded on google maps in a cache file on the pda?
this way we can access them the offline like we do with google earth
thx
take a look @ http://terracrosser.com/
i've seen terracrosser
the thing in terracrosser is that u have to load maps it needs lots of work
if we can save ggogle maps cach to use it offline it would be much easier and user friendly...
what do u think?

having google maps cache for when you don't have reception or gps would be a nice feature you might wanna put in a request to google the developers there might be able to implement it
or you can use gpsVP (freeware). it uses google maps and saves the maps on your phone. has a desktop version too, so you can download the maps to your phone from your desktop, and you wont have to use airtime to download them when you are on your way.
the program has some nice features like tracking, waypoints, traffic density etc..
on my phone I need to have GPSProxy runnşng for gpsVP to work. GPSProxy is a neat little freeware program too...

looks like a nice program doesn't look like it will work well with out a gps
i have an HTC WIZARD
How do you get the Google maps onto the GPSVP software?
Hope you guys can help
Terracrosser is Perfect !
It works very well on my Diamond
Thank you for this topic and information

There's also virtualearthmobile, but development has stopped i believe
Tracky is another that uses and caches google maps. It is not free, and the shareware is basically useless. It only runs for 15 minutes at a time, and resets the cache upon closing.
I found it a while ago on Aximsite.
Can the google cache file be moved to the storage card to conserve space?
it's no use of finding a way to move it to storagecard since basically u cannot use it without internet connection...
I don't understand what you mean by that.

hm, 30 MB free memory on my device and 3 GB free mem on storage card - I´d love to move the cache to the storage card
but apparently there is no way
I guess that having things stored locally is against the very concept of what Google aims to achieve... I don't think they'll ever release a version where the maps can be stored locally... it must all be drawn 'live' from the web... eventually perhaps data connections will be free though
I think that must be possible to use google maps offline, you can find a lot of manuals on the net to do this with the iphone.
Use other programs with dowloaded maps from google?? Yes...but what about the gsm location? This is really importat to me becouse I don't have gps in my htc touch.
Using google maps offline? anybody knows how to do it??
If the iphone can...
Cheers
I think the point of storing the cache on the storage card is not so much being able to use GoogleMaps offline, but more so to conserve the device storage space and use the larger storage card space. Similar to how Windows Mobile Live Search can store the cache on the storage card. I would be interested in this as well.

Sorry for posting in this thread after it has been started for such a long time, but how do you go about using gpsvp?
I manage to download both google maps and gpsvp on my handphone (X1), but I have no idea what's the next step.
Would anyone kindly teach me? Thank you.
Has anyone found a way to force Google Maps to retain its cache?
I would like to be able to pre-load maps for locations outside my home data zone prior to traveling to the area where I do not have a "all you can eat" data connection.
I am currently in Japan having just arrived from Australia. Before leaving Australia I loaded up the google maps for where I am in Tokyo. When I arrived here I fired up Google maps and when it moved itself from the last fix in Australia to current location in Japan it came up with blank maps. Nothing in the cache. Even though 12 hours earlier when I last had Google Maps running I had been browsing this very location in great detail.
Because I do not have cost effective data connection in Japan I found a work around was to connect my Diamond via activesync to my laptop which is on broadband and get the maps again.
But preferable to me would be to find a way to prevent Google Maps flushing away maps.
Would backing up the file "cache-GLM.dat" and the others in \Application Data\GoogleMaps immediately after loading new maps and later on re instating this backup have the effect of keeping desired maps accessible without a data connection?
I also notice that \Application Data\GoogleMaps\cache-GLM.dat file size seems to be limited to 1.99mb and does not get larger when I browse new areas. So it seems to have a first on first off overwrite loop like a data recorder. Another possible fix to my problem, could be finding a way to increase this cache limit somehow. Say to 20mb. That way maps would not need to be overwritten so soon. Had a look and could not find anything obvious in the registry to set this.
Does anyone else desire this sort of feature in Google Maps where you can pre load maps when you have a data conx and use them again without losing them when you subsequently travel to the new area?
ver 2.2.0.16
yeah i would like to see that.. absolutely. Getting expensive to download the same maps over and over again
I agree, it would be nice to keep the cache for one week.
It would save a lot of roaming charges.
You could use the Microsoft Live Search Maps. This give you the option to set the amount of cache that you want and saves the map on the internal storage.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just loaded it up and got it working. However even with max cache size set and internal storage it is seemingly not retaining all the maps. I just zoomed in to max zoom to get some maps where I am in japan. Then disconnected from activesync/internet, restarted MLS Maps and only some of the zoom levels were retained. So not a total solution. But an improvement perhaps. Interface is not as eloquent either. But thnx for the suggestion.
There's mgmaps but don't know if anyway has it working on the Diamond yet.
Hi,
is it possible to change the Path of the GoogleMaps Chache to the Internal Storage?
thnx...
google maps 4.0 doesn't seem to have a size limit
My cache size is over 24mb and growing. I would like to disable the no data connection warning also. please keep posting
say goodbye to google maps
try this.

Have had a look on google and around here but can't seem to find an answer if there is one.
The HD2 compass app works great when Google Maps is installed on the internal storage, but if Google Maps is installed on the Storage Card then the compass app is unable to find Google Maps an disables the Set Location button.
As Google Maps can take up large amounts of storage very quickly I like to keep this app installed on the Storage Card.
Wondering if there is anyway to make the compass app work when Google Maps is installed on the storage card or perhaps install Google Maps onto the internal storage but force is to store the cache on the storage card?
same problem here..
actually installing google maps in storage is very nice idea, its always better to save some memory !
but now need solution to the above problem.

make sure you have gps enabled? if not, another method can be found here http://www.htc.com/www/howto.aspx?p_id=297&id=226&f=t
It should work with Google Maps 3.3.1 and GPS or "my location" enabled. Have a look here.
If some bug in Google Maps doesn't allow the compass to be used when installed to storage card (though I cannot confirm that), then I'm sure a workaround would be to use GpsModDriver (compass enabled gps driver), and configure Google Maps to use the COM port of GpsModDriver. Try it, I'm pretty sure then you will get compass support in Google Maps even when installed to storage card.
Confirmed - with google maps installed on the card, the Compass application (as in the standalone one) loses the ability to set destination. However from within google maps you do get the little arrow once it's located the satelites
There is no need to install the new drivers to get compass with the latest version of Google Maps. Google will work just fine on it's own.
I too have removed Google Maps from internal and installed the lastest version to my external memory. I've also removed CoPilot as I was not interested in paying for it.
I've noticed a couple of issues.
1) When you open digital compass it does not have the option to change between metric/imperial.
2) Digital Compass can not find google maps and as such will not show the destination button.
3) Without CoPilot Footprints does not allow open maps it just reports that it can't find CoPilot.
I've found a way to solve it but I can't find the app to do it (Might try to write my own).
All you need is a exe that launches GoogleMaps from it's location on the SD card.
Placing a copy of this into /Program Files/GoogleMaps as GoogleMaps.exe would solve the issue of with the Digital Compass app.
Do the same with /Program Files/CoPilot as CoPilot.exe would start Google Maps when CoPilot is requested.
Anyone know of an app launcher that would work?

definitely u can use this! just make folder in my devicerogram files/googlemaps and place there the two files in the app folder (i mean dj...exe and googlemaps.lnk) then just rename the dj.....exe to googlemaps.exe and everything is done.
tnx to the guy that made this exe file ...now we have working googlemaps on sd and digital compass.
Is this possible? rather than it using 3g etc to download as you go?? would be handy
ill get used to this one day
This is a good mod, it saves viewed map (through wifi) in cache and reuses it to save data usage, you have to scan the map at the levels you will use for your trip.
Or Mapdroyd (full navigable maps) from the market its totaly free but not as detailed as googles.
I dont think Android will see Tomtom somehow
Hi, I installed HTC Sync 3 to see how it works with the 2.1 Hero.
In the overview, there is listed, how much space on the SD card the various file types use.
Well, I have some music and photos on it, as I expected. But I also saw there is an option for maps on the SD card (which I unfortunately don't have)
what kind of maps does HTC mean here?
is it some way to download maps for google maps navigation? do they recognize copilot or something else?
i'm really interested, so, does anyone have a clue?
I am actually also looking for an answer to this. Very disturbing, this "maps" label that nobody seems to know what it's there for.
the new range of 'sense' phones have offline navigation installed. I guess it will be something to do with that.
The feature probably allows you to back up your maps.
Yes, me too... I don't find any resources explaining the purpose of this ...
I hope some of you will find one...
Same question here...

Do they? What maps and what navigation system? AFAIK Google maps tiles cannot be cached onto card. If there is a way I would be interested!
By the way with the new Sync the only reference to maps is in the SD card usage - they are not included in the list of data than can be synced, so it is nothing to do with backing up maps by the looks of it.
I have almost 4GB of maps on my card from two different sat nav programmes (Sygic for Europe and Copilot for USA), and yet according to Sync I have no maps at all! So it cannt recognise maps from two major sat nav apps.
