Droid X email client slow? - Droid X General

Hi all,
One of the many hats I have for my company is a mobil deployment tech. I just got a demo Droid X unit and have been playing with it for a couple of days. I'm having some issues with the mail client notifications and delivery though. It seems like I don't get notifications unless I have the phone on and the mail client open. Also it seems a little slow in getting email in general. This is with an exchange account. Push is turned on. I wanted to see what other's experiences were along these lines? Is this par for the course?

Found that turning the phone to performance mode fixes this for some people. Other option is to use a different email client.

Push Mail (GRPS/UMTS)/ WM 6.1 / Exchange Problem

Hey guys,
I've searched the web and this forum but wasn't able to find an answer to my question.
I own a jade since 10 month and since 2 weeks I have a data flaterate due to my job. Since then I'm using push mail to sync my phone with our Exchange Server (push elemets if they arrive).
However, it's not working well and I'm not sure if it's a wm6.1 or jade problem.
- Sometimes my phone does not receive Emails, even if push mail is actived. I think sometimes it tells me that it is connected to the server and does not deliver emails anyway.
- The connection to the server inactive for a very long time, i. e., sometimes for hours! I only receive new mails after a reboot. This really sucks 'cause I need some mails quite quick and I don't want to sync manually all the time.
- My phone crashs, i. e., I see the green light flashing but the display is staying black or it is frozen.
- When turning on WiFi additionally, it's even worse. My jade turned off for 3x times last week at one day.
Has anyone the same problems? Is there anything I can do about it? Updates for wm 6.1, does wm 6.5 solve the problem? Or is it the jade hw?
Btw, at my company blackberry is not supported, so I need a solution working with exchange. so this is not an option. ...there doesn't seem to be many people outside using the jade like I do.
Cheers,

This is a problem because most people use blackberry in your situation.
I also have no experiences with push-mail and so I can not help you, sorry.
One solution might be to use a web-based email client that allows your email to be viewed via the web. Some corporate and government servers allow users to get their email that way. Basically, you would login to the appropriate server and see your email just like you would at Yahoo, Google or Hotmail. It becomes a question of whether your IT department wants to support a web service like this.
BTW, I know that with Yahoo Mail, it can be "forced" to a push/pull type service. You have to google how it's done and set up some things on your computer and Yahoo.
Another possibility may be to forward your business mails automatically to such an web-based service.
I was thinking about forwarding email as well. But I like to receive mails automatically and to get a notification.
But I'm still ****ed up about the push-mail solution. Can't believe that it is not working properly. I mean I can live with it, but is sucks...
Thanks for your answers anyway!
I thinks it's very much dependant on the Exchange Server (at source) and connection band status as opposed to Jade's capability. My experience is the same. I do not rely much on direct push, but more on ActiveSync by scheduling (Menu - Schedule) more frequent, e.g. every 20 - 30 minutes or so.
it is working on mine....
Hi!
My Jade running on 6.1 is synching fine with the companies exchange. No problems at all.
When the synchronissation is not working, is the internet connection ok? (can you open any webpage?)
Regards and good luck,
Stefan
I have no idea about the Exchange configuration, have to ask our IT guys about it. I'm usting using the outlook-web-access adress to connect with my jade.
I just don't understand why the connection is sometimes interrupted for hours and sometimes only for a few minutes.
Has anyone experince with wm6.5? Is it better for push-mail?
I have a similar problem. I have this phone too due my job, htc brand its more like a work-phone. I can recieve hotmail and outlook emails without problems. but can't refresh and sync my contacts!!! It sucks! Because I constantly get new contacts, but exchange server doesn't work! how is it possible?
I mean, its not a phone for kids or gamers, its made for a reason, and that reason seems not to work! can sobody help me out?

I have no problem synchronizing my emails and contacts either way, phone to server or server to phone. Logically if you can receive outlook email, synchronizing should not be a problem.
I can confirm that the Jade 3G (WM6.1 & 6.5) works a treat with exchange 2003. Besides, configuring the Jade for exchange push/pull is absolutely no different from any other phone running 6.1 & above.
From what you've said, it sounds more like you phone has a fault on it. I can't remember the last time my phone crashed and it's running a cooked 6.5 rom.
i've been wanting to get that to work with my UniSA (University of South Australia) email. But doesn't seem to work, if anyone can help me would be a great help.

You need to be sure of the UniSA server name (usually webmail.xxx.com.au). And you need to get the certificate (filename.cer) in order synchronise.

You'll have to get your IT dept to assist in setting it up. There's more to it than just configuring your actuall phone.
Similar Prob
Hi
I have a similar issue but not with Outlook\Exchange. I have setup with gmail for IMAP and pull every 5 minutes using 3g operator connection. My problem is, which I guess is where issue is similar, when my phone in sleep mode I can wait anything from 30 minutes to 2 hours for the pull process to kick in and download mail (notification alert tells me). Now, if I turn phone on within that time, bingo, sync's and pulls. So seems the process isnt working as should when in sleep mode.
Any idea's or is this the norm? Again, I been thinking about flashing to 6.5 cooked ROM just to test. I know my mate has a Palm with Windows 6.1 and he has no trouble so seems Jade build issue.
Opinions welcome!
I have exchange working well syncing contacts, mail, notes etc and it pushes as soon as I get a maiil (infact faster than my pc when i am infront of my desk) and use the JADE for my company emails. I had the stock rom and now 6.5 and both work without an issue. It sounds to me like you have some software issue or conflict in your device that is causing it to crash. I would hard reset and perhaps install a stock rom to make sure its clean. Have you got your server address as owa.something.com. If you set up exchange its not an IMAP or POP service so you should not see that option.

Push Email for Hotmail?

Hey guys. Did an extensive search and Im 99.9% sure this hasnt been covered here before. The only solution was on cnet and it doesnt seem to be working.
Anyhow, is there a way to get push email for Hotmail on the HD2?
Windows Live Messenger application will give you push email.
Watch out for the Sync Contacts check box when you set it up, it will merge your email address contacts with your phone contacts and cause a right mess. you have been warned!

No, it works without WLM running in the background.

So I signed into WLM, left it running and sent an email, but I didnt recieve any notifications. I had to hit the send/recieve option to retrieve the email.
Im starting to regret getting this phone. So many issues, and its just the first day.
You have to go the sync schedule and choose for items to come as they arrive. you can set what you want it to do in peak and off peak times, and then define what you want as peak and off peak if i recall correctly
mate, its "not so many issues"...its just the first day. When i got my first WM and fisrt smart phone aswell, which was the touch HD, i wasnt too impressed until i started flashing roms, and learnt how the device works. give it time, its honestly far more interesting than most phones, WM phones are the first phones where i havent lost interest in a phone after owning it for a while (as happens with all devices! and im somewhat of a tech geek )

Nice one mate. Ill have a look into it.
Yeah, I guess my sentiments are a little premature. Just need to adjust after owning BB's for the last 8 years.
Thanks for the advice, and Ill let you know how I get on.
that is no 'true' push mail and setting it to as items arive will couse a lot of battery drain its just that the free hotmail accounts don't support that feature.
What is push email then? i always assumed its when items arrive as they come :\
I forward my hotmail along with all my accounts to my gmail. This way I get true push email, contacts and calendar.
again, what IS "true" push email! please someone enlighten me...

Email problems

Hey guys i'm kinda new to this so cut me some slack.
I just bought my HD2 today and i love it but i'm having a problem with the email. It's not getting to my phone for a while and on my AOL i'm not getting it at all. My Hotmail is temperamental i get them quick sometimes and not for like 30 minutes other times. My yahoo i receive fairly quickly and my g mail is perfect. Any ideas on what i can do to help make them all about the same and get them fairly quickly?
its becouse the free hotmail accounts dont support push mail facing that same issue myself..
Well what's funny is as of today my hot mail is working fine i get my emails pretty quick but my yahoo is the one being temperamental i get it like 15 minutes later or i have to manualy send/receive it.
Set up your hotmail via the windows live app, it should come already installed, if not get it from the marketplace, its more reliable that way.
hey ok I figured it out but now im having problems with my remote desktop simply how do does it work

Exchange contact sync breaks after a few hours

When I first recieved the Evo, everything synchronized just fine. Contacts both ways, emails, and calendar, but after about 5 hours, I started getting a notification that there were Exchange sync issues.
Whenever I would open up the accounts page under settings, I would see the sync symbol next to Contacts, repeatedly trying, over and over again. Finally, after a while, it stops, and a sync symbol with an exclamation point appears in the notification bar, as well as next to Contacts, and at the bottom of the accounts page, the same symbol with "An I/O error has occurred," explanation.
I don't understand what is going on here... as the original sync worked great. I can remove my Exchange account and re-add, and it works great for a few hours. Same thing if I wipe the phone completely, (factory reset.) The only solution I have had so far is to un-tick the Contact sync, and it seems to work okay, but obviously I need this service to work properly.
I have tried searching for a few days now and couldn't find anything really related to this. Some have had issues with reboots, and I had it BAD two days ago, and I finally wiped my phone. I do believe that there are some serious core Exchange integration problems on the Evo..
Does anyone have any insight on the matter, or should I just email HTC? Would a cooked ROM perhaps be any better?
Thanks guys
Same issue here. Very frustrating.

Also, this DESTROYS my battery. If I actually let it attempt to keep syncing, it's completely dead within an hour.
Also have the same issues and was searching for answers to no avail. Another problem I have is that sometimes random emails just stop showing up on the phone. I can open once and view but later they are gone even though they haven't been deleted. I obviously see them on my outlook on my computer but never see them again on the phone. I hoping an update in the future will fix these issues as I never had a problem with my Touch Pro so I'm thinking it's not the server at work.

No problem on my Pre either, and I really don't want to have to buy 3rd-party software to fix something that is supposedly integrated into the phone...
Fellas, talk to your IT dept and have them check the Exchange logs. Different versions of Exchange have different levels of administration over mobile synchronization.
I have an EAS on my EVO with no issue whatsoever.
Bear in mind, Exchange 2003 doesn't seem to like Android synching with a mailbox that was previously synched with another device. I have seen synchs crash consistently until the synch relationship is deleted on the server side.
i have zero issues with exchange on the android.
you guy can try touchdown form the market. its the best exchange app out. dataviz has road sync which is another idea. i have not used road sync but have used touchdown on the hero. it works well.. bullet proof.
i would check with your respective IT Admins and make sure they allow Android handsets to access the server. some companies do not OR recommend you use a 3rd party app (such as touchdown)
Strange, I had my phone replaced yesterday, and it worked from about 5pm to 9:45am today, perfectly... then out of nowhere, it failed, and is now in an infinite loop to sync contacts.
Something to do with Facebook
I think it has something to do with contacts that are linked to Facebook. Very Very frustrating.

I just created a ticket with my IT department to investigate the logs to see what is going on. Something tells me it's related to Sense, and not my Exchange server at all... considering that multiple Windows Mobile phones, and my Palm Pre have all worked fine... even some of my old Sprint dumbphones worked okay, when I used Sprint Email.
I would root my phone and try a standard version of Android, but isn't it Sense that does the Exchange sync? or is that built into Android at this point?

I've tried touchdown and can't even get it to create an account. I think it maybe something with my work server that these programs don't like. I know that my employer was too cheap to get an exchange server so they use some sort of activesync client that runs on the standard server. Not an IT guy so I don't know how this affects things but I do know that I had no issues like this with the windows mobile email. On top of my contacts not syncing, I still have emails that randomly disappear or no longer have a body to the email after viewing once. Very strange and very frustrating that I have no work around.
Well we are definitely using Exchange 2007, and I had to bypass our whole "ticketing system," and contact our Exchange/Outlook department secretly. I am hoping for a response in the next day or so. I bet you anything it has to do with the policy-push that happens once or twice a day... basically re-affirms your device is compliant. IE, if you went through and manually disabled your password protection, this is SUPPOSED to push out the requirement again.
One thing I should probably try, is re-wiping my phone and NEVER installing lockpicker... even though the phone is nearly non-functional without that handy utility, perhaps that can be causing issues?
Been running HTC Sense, and Exchange on my EVO without any issues for three weeks.
I have not made any changes to the original setup, other than adding about ten apps from Market Place.
Holy crap, I just got a call from two highest-level managers (with attitude, I might add,) that no one from the company is _ALLOWED_ to help me get this to work. It's an unsupported device. So are iPhones and all WM phones... so this is bizarre.
Basically, this ActiveSync service is a back-door offering, with zero support, and everyone is real hush-hush about it. My asking to investigate the logs seems to have REALLY irritated people in my company, and this is a big place. I hope I didn't create waves... damnit Android, you are ruining my life!!
What assholes. I hate these arrogant ass IT guys. They need to recognize that they are a cost center which only exist to make you a more effecient employee. If your effeciency is enhanced by using android vs a crappy blackberry, they need to make reasonable efforts to accomodate you.
I would send an email to THEIR boss, and ask him what the mission of an IT organization should be. And if he gives you crap, ask the CIO.
You don't understand... the top-dogs just made their call... the next higher up is the VP of our IT group... basically, if I bring it up again, I can consider myself terminated. I didn't realize this was such a sore subject, but apparently it is.
Apparently it has a lot to do with export control, policies, all sorts of random BS that I don't really know about. The ActiveSync service is mainly provided as a back-door 'friendly' service to help those who don't get corporate blackberries.
So it's totally unsupported, and I don't know anyone I can buy a few drinks for in order to get this fixed. I guess I'll have to work the other angle with HTC, but damnit, I already know nothing will help there. Even if they were to offer to help, my IT department would be less than willing to lend a helping hand.
Also, most of our stuff is out-sourced... but I know there are DEFINITELY people in my own building that can help me---I just don't know who, and I also don't want them getting in trouble.
It just bothers me that when the iPhone came out, there were enough 'important' people around, so that even though it's "not supported," our environment was definitely modified to work with the phone...
Le Sigh.
Man, this problem is killing me... I have delete my exchange account twice a day.
man, I wish there was a solution to this... no one else is having this issue?
You could root and get Cyans new Froyo build, it has native exchange support. There is definitely differences between HTC sense exchange and Android exchange.

Does this build support Camera and 4G? I keep hearing about these new ROMs and all their problems.
I just installed TouchDown and figured I'd give it a whirl. If the new Froyo build works on all aspects, I'd obviously rather have that. I like the integration of the stock solution. I don't like that I will have to use TouchDown for everything... calendar alerts, and everything, but we'll see. I also hate that I might have to pay $20 for something that should work out of the box...

[Q] WANTED: eMail Rules/filters for poutlook

Hey all.
I have tried Flexmail and found it wanting - I think mine had issues, activesync failed to sync to directory and the rules were quite limited. Still waiting for their support teams to sort out several issues with move and stuff. even if they can get it working I can't see it being good enough in it's control.
So we are back to poutlook and it's limited functionality.
Are there any decent programs out there for message filtering. I get 300+ emails per day and over 150 are total rubbish 50 are newsletters and notifications which I file.
and half a dozen orders buried in this lot that I NEED to deal with immediately.
any suggestion please
Cheers
G
Well - I don't know if this will work for you, but I have all my email come through my Yahoo account. On the server side, I have about 60 rules/filters set up. This way, on my inbox on my phone, I already get them filtered. I have been using Yahoo for years and now-a-days I get a spam email in my inbox about twice a year. If you have not set up a web based account yet, I would actually suggest gmail for the push capabilities. But I don't know how their filters or spam protection work.
Just as an aside, I used to use FlexMail and most of the time when I could not get something working, it was my fault. It is a very powerful application. I finally decided it was too powerful for my needs on my cell and switched to ProfiMail. You might want to check out their rules/filters. I don't use the filters on the phone, so I can't help you there, but it is a pleasure to use.
