Extract & edit .cab setup files - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I have a question that is how can I extract or edit .cab files to add sth to it or use some of its file on my new programs ??
I found some software such as magiccab but is not free & I couldn't even test it
please help me
tnx

try to use CECabmgr, its also paid but the tryal version lets you play with it for 30 days..

Look up Wince Cab Analyzer (I think that's the name). It's free, and you can look at cab contents and dump them. Also, the cab tool in sk tools lets you unpack cab files.

thanks
I'm using CECabmgr but I couldn't found 2nd one

You can use SKtools too.

Check out my post considering cab's.

A few questions about installation software on XDA

Hello,
I've been using XDA from two weeks and now I know that it's fantastic machine .
My questions are:
1) How can process some application (which is distributed like *.exe file and it's installed by ActiveSync) to *.cab file? I'd like to install all application by hand using cabInstaller (and store all of application on my SD card).
2) I can't download ROMkitchen from xda-developers.com (I read instructions on page http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=ROMkitchen)
Thanks for your answers.
1 often you can just rename the exe file to zip and extract the cab file from inside it's the one named something with arm
2 do you want to make your own online kitchen ?
or are you looking to just build a rom if so

Thanks, you are right, some programs are distributed like selfextracting zip. I found other solution: ActiveSync allows to choose between the destination in memory or storage card.

I'd like to make my own kitchen becouse I will have better control all details
also about 1 then some programs install to somewhere on the pc
and in that dir they keep all their cab files which you can then copy to the xda as you see fit

Take a look at http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/tools/
I have there a basic set for creating your own kitchen.....
But the file is about 25 MB.
It would be fine, if you download it between 8 pm and 8 am MEZ cause in this time i've got more upload speed....

OCP CAB Manager sucks!!!
OCP CAB Manager sucks!!!
It is only good for opening other .cabs, if you want to extract something out of it... and it costs lots of MONEY for such a crap...
Use Cabwiz instead. It is free as it is part of the PocketPC SDK.
You will need to create .inf file, where you can specify, what should be copied, to which location and so on.
below is zipped version of one of my apps as a sample. )
Once you have your .inf ready, simply drag and drop it onto CabWiz icon...
Here (http://www.sundialsoft.freeserve.co.uk/cabinfo.htm) is a perfect guide, how to write .inf files for CabWiz....

I'm not sure where you got the idea that WinCE CAB Manager can't create new CAB files. It certainly can, and it's a whole lot easier than Cabwiz.
Try this new cab making utitlity. Its suppose to bypass most grueling issues of cab making... Havnt tried it out yet as I just downloaded 2 mins ago. its new from....tim kremer

Use WinCE Cab Manager. It's simple as working with a ZIP/RAR archive. Drag & drop supported for file edition & replacements.
Any help
Ok guys, I downloaded the OCP Software, that is great and all, but I would actually like to know what code is used and if there is something that will allow me to learn how to write the code. I do know a little about writing in VB 6.0, I know that is not a widly used program code. So if anyone could help me please, that would be great. Thanks
Is there any other easiest technique?

How to install .XML files??

How to install the .xml files bundled in the cabs.rar?? I do not know how to make the extrom run automatically after the HR so i have to install each cab file 1 by 1, can anyone help??
Use the ones in cabs2. Also make sure you know what are those .xml for (they are replaced with .cab (s) in cabs2)
xml files are a typicaly a formatted text file like html
not really binary exe programs files
some programs use xml files to store settings and data
maybe they need to be in a location the program in question
will look for them

use HTCustom1.7.cab
yup...
I am having the same issue. I keep seeing these .xml files. I am not a computer guru lol. Do I cut and paste it somewhere on my phone or what? I am so lost please help.
Same thing here on my side mixtape_butcha. I'm subscibed in an Universal forum and have to install a USB switch which is a folder containing an xml file. I asked many time a guide on how to use it but nothing came back.
If you happen to know how to handle it, let me know. I'l do the same with you.

first of all it is nice that you looked up a matching post yourself and obviously searched for a solution there, but...
if i get your problem right, it doesn't match the ones before. they were talking about .xml files that came with a cab file and stored the settings on how to install and execute.
you, however, talk about a subscribtion to a thread, meaning your xml file is an RSS feed, for which you need a special reader, since PIE is not a proper desktop browser and therefore does not handle feeds. but there is a lot of software out there to handle rss feeds. i personally use spb online 1.2, but there is also freeware, like this: http://www.dewantoro.net/search/pda+rss+reader+cab
i don't get the point with the usb switch though, maybe if that didn't solve your problem you should post further details about that issue and maybe post filenames or screenshots so we all know exactly what you are about to do.
You need not worry to install xml file if it comes with a cab. Cab file should be designed to use it automatically. xml files store usually configurable settings, it may be worth opening those files using any text editor like note pad or even IE to check the contents, that may help if any change is needed. But 99% chances are that you need not do any thing with those xml files.
I have found some people run in to this problem when they download a .cab file from the internet and once downloaded it is a .rar so you extract the .rar to find NOT .cab but .xml
Here is more about it and how to fix it.

I am trying to install a game on my MDA Vario IV , it does have .xml file. But no .cab files , only .000 file , .002 , .003 , and .004 files. How do i install this game then ? The installer is the .xml file.
EDIT : Nvm , fixed it , i needed not the files within the .cab file , but just the .cab file itself to extract in on my mobile.

Couple of things:
You are in the wrong subforum. This section is for the Blue Angel. You should look for the Blackstone (aka Touch HD) section.
Now, the file that you opened is a cab file. You don't need to extract the contents of a cab file. Just copy it to your device and click on it one. The cab will install everything, including the settings in the xml.
Good luck!

Well, if you have the ROM already, it depends on what phone it comes from. Once you have the files out, you have to look at packages in the OEM and SYS folders, find the corresponding files, and look through the RGU's and HV files for needed registry keys. And of course, you also have to check the initflash.txt and iniflash.dat files.

How to use and install things on your HTC Diamond.

Hi.
Can anyone of u plz tell me how to use open gl and how to install thongs like Diamond cubes themes and more. Plz teach me how to do this cuz i cant get this things to work. I wana use me htc for something funny not just use it like a phone.
plz help me if u can.
I am not an experienced person, but I try to answer you.
you need a file called CAB. Download the CAB file for a particular program.
Never unzip it. The CAB file itself acts as a exe file.
1) Sync your diamond to the PC with active sync.
2) copy the cab file to your diamond
3) double click on the cab file.
4) Install either on your ROM or internal memory
Good luck!
Google is your friend.
If your new to Pocket PC devices, check this out.

Carty..
Thx guys for great help

Copy them to your \Windows folder with Resco Explorer or Total Commander.
so why use total commander and not just drag the manila into window\, pls. fill me out with more details. Thank you.

Because ActiveSync/File Explorer can't copy files with System attribute and Total Commander can. Apart from that, it is a way better file manager than the system one. And unlike the desktop version, it is free.
