Data usage help - Droid X General

Ok can someone explain to me how I have accrued 25 megs of data according to Verizon in the last 24 hours but I have been strictly on wifi. I am worried cause when it goes tiered I will need to focus since I average about 20 gigs a month.

So your saying as soon as your phone is turned on, its on wifi & not 3g?

I checked my data yesterday then I turned on wifi and never turned it off, and it went up.

Droid X requires unlimited data, so it doesn't matter. If verizon changes your data cap, you will be able to cancel your contract (and keep the Droid X), or get grandfathered and keep the unlimited data.

How in the world does one use 20gigs?? That's crayzy! Im on my phone all day everyday, and it was te same when i had my dinc. I have never used more than 2-3 gigs of data

Well when I'm in my car I am streaming music. When I am at work I am either watching video podcasts or slingbox. But when I am home I use wifi lol. I can only imagine what the number would be if I didn't use wifi

Totally! I can't comprehend burning through that much data in a month. I think one would have to be downloading torrents consistently every day to pull something like that off

Welcome to 21st century data usage. As video gets to be more high definition, this is not a lot of data.

I have an office so when I am not in a meeting my phone is on my desk and on, i subscribe to 26 podcasts and most of then are video. My average video podcast is about 200 megs

Airrave

Took about 5 minutes, and i will be getting my air rave, free in about 3 days. Anyone have any experiences to share??

Yes, overall its very handy. If it ever starts to mess up, unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
I am Z.
Expect text messages to keept repeating themselves (generally outgoing) and call drops when starting a call on the Airrave then moving out of it's range.

I have no text probs as mentioned, but I do have trouble with latentcy. When I'm torrenting, even though I have my airave attached as an arm of the network rather than running all the traffic through it, I get a hard 3 second delay both hearing voice and them hearing m only while torrenting.
If I have any weird trouble with the phone, like delay, not getting calls, or not hearing the other end of the line, I do unplug my airave.
I've been to the sprint store twice. For weird voice clarity issues that turned out to be the airave.

Yea, prepare to be thoroughly annoyed. Get ready for random times where you cannot call land lines but can call mobile phones. Sometimes text messaging will be all messed up. You will probably notice weird problems if you flash roms a lot that no one else is reporting. It has to do with the airrave. Also you will lose calls/data if you move out of airrave coverage.
Overall, its a neat gadget but RIDICULOUSLY annoying sometimes.
just forget about the air rave and enable Google voice integration and turn on airplane mode and then you can call and text over wifi using the Google voice app.

They can be a bit of a pain if you have slow internet. Just don't use it as a router like they say in the manual. Hang it off of your network. I love mine as I had no reception in my bedroom of my apartment. Saved my ass and I didn't have to pay for it.

Thanks everyone foe the replies. I always appreciate everyone's feedback out here. I use Google voice now to eliminate the whole sprint vvm issues on CM, but I guess I didn't realize I could make my calls over wifi, although it makes sense that I would be able too?! How would I set that up? I couldn't find any options for it...
Edit: additional question...is it a fairly easy transition going in and out of wifi, to receive calls on normal service when I leave my wifi area?
I am in a great sprint reception area, but my house is like a giant signal shield!

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^. It does work pretty well but it seems whenever they update the software they neglect to send a reset signal nor inform you o the update. So there may be random times when you will not get calls because they go diret to voicemail or you won't be able to dial out without resetting the Airave. This has been only 4 times in 2 years so that is not bad. Your 3G speeds will be awesome though...about 1.5Mbs consistently.
I haven't had any of the reported problems with ours. We have it connected to our ATT uverse wireless router.

Thats because it's using your Internet to get out... Just bottlenecks your connection really - better off staying on WiFi.
Personally, for all the issues mentioned in this thread I sent mine back. It did more harm than good. Wound up ditching Sprint altogether at the end of the day anyway.
To the guy thats torrenting (sorry forgot who said that) the Airrave is opening an IPSEC tunnel back to a Sprint server. If you QoS the IPSEC traffic (UDP 500 and/or 4500 depending on how your set up) and rate limit your torrent traffic to about 90% of your max bandwidth you'll probably clean up the voice a bit. Might be worth checking the CPU utilization in your router too to make sure that's not causing some of the latency.
In general, for people that can't get it working at all behind their existing networks, make sure you have IPSEC passthrough enabled (some routers may call it NAT-T or something like that). Some older/cheaper routers won't support IPSEC passthrough at all, but those are few and far between these days.

All of the above! Especially with the text message issue. When I first got it I was texting the wife she was home it repeated everything I said over 30 times each LOL. I think it was Kenny that mentioned to unplug the airrave then plug it back in. The worst part is having NO signal and your battery dies.

I've liked having mine. I put it on the 2d floor and get 5-6 bars on each floor and about 4-5 in the basement. No issues except, every once in a while it goes off line (maybe an update IDK), and you have to unplug and replug it back to reset it. I notice this when I start getting only 2-3 bars upstairs and 2 downstairs.
I hate my Airave.....
I am on the second one. It is hooked up to 10MB internet service & still cuts out during phone calls & has a noticable delay between the two halves of the coversation. My Vonage phone works great plugged into the same router as the Airave. Now I just leave it unplugged full time, I really need to send it back I guess. It's not costing anything so no harm done.
Also more than half the time it does not connect to my wife's stock Evo Shift.
For me this unit is a waste of space.

Putting phone into emergency power saving mode

Here is my thought.
I live in Florida, and if a hurricane comes and knocks out power, I would like my cell phone to be able to send/receive e-mail/text, and phone calls. I don't want ANYTHING else to function like Facebook, Words with Friends, etc. to conserve battery life as much as I can.
Is there an easy way to do this in an emergency situation?
Freeze all the apps since you want email you cannot simply turn off data. Also note that there is a good chance power will be out to the cell tower near you as well. Generator power only lasts so long.
Sent from my PantechP4100 using xda premium
In an emergency situation you turn on airplane mode and toggle it once an hour or once every few hours to get messages. Power might be out for days, so you don't want data on all the time as its a waste and you prob don't need texts and emails immediately.

For that situation I would buy a car jump starter and use that to charge your phone.

You know it would be cool to have an app where you choose certain apps out of your app list to be frozen and unfrozen on command. Like a widget clicker or even a status toggle. Just an idea.
Also just curious but if power get knocked out wouldn't that kill the towers as well? Or do they have emergency batteries?

Keep in mind your TWS % is a big factor in battery drain. Also, if your area gets a direct hit, you most likely won't be able to call out. Texting will still work.
I know this from experience during Katrina. Anyone in the 504 code was SOL for calls, but text and direct connect still worked.

Subway Surf Using Up Bandwidth?

Hello,
I recently got my Nexus 4 and I have been hooked onto to the game Subway Surf for a few days.
And, then my data plan gave me a warning. So, I looked at Subway Surf and found that it had used nearly 50 MB in a single day of playing.
Is this normal? Or is there some problem?
I want to reinstall it but I am afraid that my high scores and unlocks will be wiped.
Any solution will be appreciated.
Thank You.
Just turn off data while playing the game. It uses up bandwidth because of the daily missions and the countdown timer. And the game also refreshes your friends' highscores very often. If you do this though, you just simply won't we able to do the daily missions

The background data is barely taking up 2 MB, its the foreground data that is hogging up bandwidth. Does restrict background data stop foreground data too?

Hello my fellow At&t and sgs4ers

So just today I made the switch to at&t from sprint. Very happy so far, minus what I had to put down (let's not go there)
But I got the 1gb plan and was wondering what everyone else has. cause I'm on the edge of deciding wheth 1gb was enough. I guess it depends on usage of course. But while I was on sprint I usually barely go over 1.2 gb.
I guess I just have to be extra careful. Do you guys have any thoughts or tips?

2gb just to be safe...
I am grandfathered into the unlimited plan...
It depends on your usage. My MIL had the 200MB plan and never had a problem.
My advice: Don't stream... anything. Use wifi as much as possible. Set your data usage alert so you know your usage before you go over.
I would say it depends on your previous phone. I just switched to AT&T to get my S4 as well (and regrettably but knowingly lost my unlimited plan) With my last device a Verizon HTC Incredible 2 (a 3g device on an unusualy slow Verizon connection), I would average 1.5GB a month 3-4. If I had to be away from WiFi.
I noticed with the GS4 being much faster and the faster LTE speeds, I can browse and pull data faster. If it weren't for my WiFi connections I'd be over 4GB already and I've had my S4 for 2 weeks now. I am sharing 4GB between 2 lines.
So I would definitly think about your previous phone and wireless speed in comparison to your S4.

Its supposed to be All You Can Eat. It is also 4 times faster than my wifi (Normally)
I think the slow speeds are for 1 of 2 reasons
1) CFW - Maybe wrong settings?
2) I started downloading quite a bit from home yesterday, so I would have been high use on this mast. I normally travel around (Lorry Driver) with Google Play Music on instead of FM. All streamed at HQ
Never had a problem, must have been me mullering it last night that caused it - if thats the case.
Anyways, no option to turn it off, or raise the warning limit, cant "Disable Notifications" either
I know you could turn warnings off on my old S3, must have changed on 4.3 or 4.4
