Do you want an additional 'THREE' customizable homescreens on your Hero? Well, there's an 'app' for that! HA!
First, I'm not sure if doing this has any bugs or inherent problems, and I am not responsible for any problems you may encounter doing this! BUT, I haven't experienced any so far myself.
Anyway, I stumbled onto this by using the Home Switcher app. When I saw how it launched the original Android Home app, that gave me an IDEA.
Using an application called 'Bar Control', I setup a Taskbar ICON to launch the native Android 'Home' application which, if you ask me, 'extends' the Hero with an additional three homescreens. I simply pull down the Taskbar and tap Home to launch the original Android Home app which gives me access to three more homescreens. AND, a simple tap of the Home button takes me back to HTC Sense.
So, I now have TEN (10) homescreens!!!!! These additional native Android homescreens are where I put some Android widgets (non HTC Sense widgets of course). And get this, the two Sprint widgets, NFL Mobile Live and Sprint TV, are available too! The Hero uses the same Wallpaper for both HTC Sense and Home, but it unlocks the native Android wallpaper gallery too.
Steps I did:
1. Downloaded Bar Control from the Market.
2. Launched Bar Control and waited for it to scan all the programs.
3. Scrolled down to the app called, 'Home' and selected it.
4. Selected an ICON of choice. (I used the same home ICON)
5. Pulled down my Notification Bar, tapped 'Home, and WALLA!
Simply hit the Home button to return to HTC Sense.
Note: To get rid of this Home ICON in the Notification Bar, simply perform the first three steps above again which will remove it.
OK, now can anyone tell me of a simple shortcut app that can be set to launch the native Android Home app without having to go through the Taskbar via the Bar Control app in my example above?
So, I believe this is the GREATEST HERO HACK so far!
When two unused screens just aren't enough lol, nice find.
Not really an hack if you ask me... why don't you install a few extra homescreen replacement apps (like openhome) so you'll even have more homescreens
this is not a hack at all. installing apps and using them as intended is as far away from a hack as could be. please change the title, this is so lame...
btw, i would love to have my homescreens scrolling "round", meaning if i swipe screen #7 (the most right one) to the left i want to go to screen #1 (the most left one). anybody know if this is possible?

I would like to know this as well, I sort of wonder why htc didn't design it like that.

Sorry, couldn't resist - to me, it's like fingernails on a black board!

lol, the same happens when you install any theme app such as open home, dxtop, etc...
What happens is, the default for the home button is cleared of it's default (HTC Sense) giving you the option which home screen you want to fire up after holding down the home button.
You could probably just clear the default yourself in App settings, limiting the need for another app all together.
Downloading a home screen app equals hacking your phone?
give him a Break it was his first post.He was over zealous on his find..LOL
well atleast he let us know about his find.sum peeps probably wouldnt had even shared..thx DaWeav
Yup, just to elaborate on what N0J mentioned:
menu/settings/applications/manage applications/HTC Sense
tap "Clear defaults"
Now, every time you push your "Home" button you will be presented with the options "Home" and "HTC Sense." As long as you don't check the default box you will always have a two-touch access to either interface.
Alternatively, for those that prefer vanilla Android to Sense, check the default box and hit "Home." Your phone will no longer load the Sense UI. This can be reversed by going to Home in manage applications (above) and again clearing defaults.

Well said and thanks for the detailing the steps out for me!
Dang. I thought this was actually going to be some useful information that could lead me to getting rid of the 4 unused homescreens
This isn't a hack and not much of a discovery but if it makes you happy...
Would be kind of cool if Sense had 10 screens of its own.
nice find! But yes, 7 home screens is a little much. until we find some better widgets.

GDE Home Screen does this
edit: by the way this is a dumb "hack"
I'm assuming this works for vanilla android as well? One of the most annoying things about my Moment that my Hero does is only having 3 screens.
Does anyone know how to REMOVE any of the homescreens from sense?
My hero is so slow!
I really hope that as part of an update to Sense that they make it so you can have any number of screens so long as it's 2X+1. (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11)
Personally, I only really use 5, so I would just drop the last 2 screens and have the little indicator get a tiny bit larger.
Hi, there's something I'd like to check and I hope you guys can help me if you're running Google's stock ROM, as opposed to any other ROM like Cyanogen's.
You know how the home screen has 5 spaces, right? if you go to spaces 1, 2, 4 or 5 (that is, any space but the central one) and launch an app from there, then use the home button to leave the app? Does it take you to the space you originally were at, or to space 3?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

It brings me back to space 3 (home screen)
Yup takes you back to the main home screen 3, although the dots on the bottom left and right are in the position they were when the app was launched, that started happening after the OTA update.
Trying to root and install a custom rom when i get to spring break and have some free time.
The Home button is to go to the home screen (that is the 3rd screen).
To exit from the app I use the left arrow button (the first one on the left) and I go back to the screen I was before launching the app.

Mine does the same thing. The dots are not correct. Also some times it will show a blank home screen [none of mine are blank] until I swipe left or right. Weird.

I wonder if it's anything the devs of the ROM can do. ~shrug~
Lol about misspelling. I hate it too. Since Chrome came out I have greatly improved my common spelling errors. [red underline > right click ftw]
I know how to edit the # and location of screens. I was curious though.. I now have 4 screens and by default when I press home, it takes me to the 4th screen (the middle when there were 7).
Am I missing something simple? How can I made say screen 2 or 3 be the default screen?
Honestly, I'd assume it's not changeable due to the main screen logically being the center one. I barely even used TouchWiz though. First thing after signing in I downloaded ADW.Launcher. Had it since his very first (flashable only) version (I was the very first tester).
Plus, I definitely don't care for the 'iphone-look' app drawer.
Ok, so I just went back to TouchWiz to try it out. After dragging screen 4 (home screen) to position 7, went into an app and then hit home. Returned to position 7. Hitting home again took me to position 4. So it looks like that 4th screen is always your home screen (unless you root and change code). At least that's my assumption as of now.
^ awesome... thanks. Really should be able to change the default screen though (LIKE ADW).
I will probably follow suit and get ADW or LP, but I wanted to try something new out. I was REALLY opposed to the TW looking like apple, but honestly it's not nearly as annoying as I thought it would be.
How are you editing the number of screens? Where are the touch wiz settings located? Feels like I've looked everywhere...

From what I've seen you open the app draw then press menu and then edit from there u can remove the number of screens and move them around I believe.
Just thought I'd post my thoughts on the Note II that I just bought yesterday.
Since happily dumping my iphone 4 I've been running a Galaxy Nexus on stock JB 4.2.1. Love the Nexus but I was pretty keen on the big form factor of the Note II but couldn't wrap my mind around the steep price, so for laughs ordered a Nexus 7 3G, figuring that between the 2 Nexus devices I'd have everything covered. Didn't really work out that way.
Nexus 7 is now for sale after a week, device is nice but I had to admit that I really don't have much regular need for a tablet, even a 3G one. So I bit the bullet and bought a Note II and have spent most of this morning configuring it...man is all that Samsung bloatware a mess! Not to mention the carrier's crap that I`ll have to root and remove. I am a gadget-a-holic and pretty good technically but this thing is pretty overwhelming in some ways.
A few observations/questions, feel free to comment:
- In the main app drawer for instance, the apps do not seem to auto-sort alphabetically like the do on my GNex...is there a sort setting for this? A pretty handy feature when you have a gazillion apps
- when I set a wallpaper background on the GNex, the background moves as you switch pages; on the Note the BG remains fixed...a setting?
- no matter how hard I fight it, I can't make apps group together by dropping one on top of the other, the lower one just keeps squirting out of the way...what am I doing wrong?
All together an impressive device though. While I'm a gadget freak I HATE collecting devices, I always get rid of inventory on Kijiji while it still has sale-ability, but in this case I think the GNex will be sticking around for at least a month or so or until I'm convinced the big Note II can work as a single phone. If not I'll keep both, because I don't see getting rid of the Note even if it is used most of the time as the tablet I said I didn't need...
Now just need to figure out how to root this thing and install a nice clean rom.
Cheers
Followup post: The original apps are in fact alpha-sorted in the drawer, but all add-ons are appended to the end of the drawer list/pages, in the order they were installed. Will reboot to see if they re-sort.

1. Go to app drawer, press left sencor button and choose "view type" and you can customize grid sorting
2. only with modded TW you can make wallpaper scrolling
3. Firstly, u need create folder and then go to app drawer, press left sencor button, click edit, choose folder and press to add apps to that folder

To skip all the carrier junk I bought mine from Amazon the international version
As long as you don't mind the higher price
No carrier blotware
No waiting for carrier to approve updates
Works almost anywhere on almost all networks
No having to unlock it if you need a different carrier

- When I go to Contacts I do not have a Settings command available (unlike the 3 little dots in the Nexus JB)
- When I go to the App Drawer to sort apps, and press the left sensor, I get Google+ launching, not a sort menu
Sorry for the noob ?s

Heck yeah, that's why I did it. I don't think the OP realizes this forum section is for the N7100/7105, which are the non-carrier branded, international versions.

I found a YouTube video which really inspired me to roll up my sleeves and dig deep into using my new Note 8.0 in a far more exhaustive fashion.
This led me to consider, there are tons of YT vids which I might never find that could give any one of us some tidbit of info allowing us to get the most out of the device and apps.
[yt]yKYsYUNFFkg[/yt]
[yt]Zja4z9MJ3Qw[/yt]
[yt]MY1jgctLkMM[/yt]
The above video reminded me of when taking my upper division & grad math courses. Along the way I encountered a prof who required us all to buy a box of colored pencils...we all looked at each other like he was bat-crap bozo...well turned out when dealing with pages of complex differential equations that using different colored chalk on the board allowed the prof to cover vastly more in a lecture...so he wanted us to mimic that in our note taking...at them who knew? That really was something unheard of, colored pencils were the tools of....the liberal arts fer goodness sakes, right? hehehehe...
So I see how Note device brings that ability to an electronic notebook. The link above shows a med student who uses a similar technique with a few twists.
So I dunno maybe we can share interesting uses or tips on usage here, not like there are other forums with the breadth of information as we have here, right. So lets do it here is anyone is interested.

I use my Note II and 8 to sketch for leisure or professional. The S Note syncs all of the files with the Samsung cloud system. Just keep backing them up with the pc from time to time as these can somethings have errors as what has happened with my Note II.
It's nice to keep up with electronically keeping notes, but take all the precaution of backing them up regularly.

Sure, what do you want to know? Lol!
I use my phone mostly for drawing, sometimes for gaming, watching media, and as a document reader, oh and tons of web browsing, texting, and sometimes as an actual phone.
I use the spen gmd gesture control to allow gestures to turn on/off wifi, to launch a few different applications, and to run a couple tasker tasks. I have chrome set to desktop only mode.
I use tasker a lot for non note2 specific things, such as killing chrome and loading opera mini when not connected to wifi when i want to browse the internet (to avoid lots of data use), synchronizing data from snote+drawing programs+wallpapers to my dropbox account, and silencing my phone automatically when in class. I do like the app i found in the playstore that recalibrates the s pen (its called reset spen).
Dunno what else, i backup my phone a lot? Lol!

so do you have any useful Youtube videos share??
I'm still at the point of setting mine up & learning how to use the " S-Apps".
I did discover something tonight, these ''smart" cases while nice do NOT disable the HOME button when case closed. So when You press on case over HOME button if it flexes enough the device will turn on. So much for "smartness" I guess. I would have thought when flap with magnets is closed the screen word not power on if the button is somehow pressed. They need to punish that developer I suppose.

Did you know that it's possible to config your Box or Dropbox or whatever cloud backup soyou get local copies of the *. snb file in internal memory (internal SD card). the external SD card & your cloud backup options all at the same time?
You just need to setup the local & remote folders & update/ sync links. It then happens pretty much automatically as the changes propagate your setup. It is pretty nifty & actually works well. I now have multiple fresh backups as well as near instant sync between my devices.

I'd rather not disable the home button. I do use it a lot. I disabled the capacitive buttons for about a week so that the would be no more accidental back button presses while on landscape position. It had proven to be more of a hassle with activating stuff on screen than without those capacitive buttons.
I want to use the home button. I like using it to conventionally switch to different apps. It's more pointless disabling it.
