Saw a video on droiddog showing some of the apps the vibrant came with and he showed how you can change the brightness to any level without using settings, an app or a widget.
Anywhere in your phone (Assuming you can see the notification bar and the screen isnt locked, simply drag your finger side to side along the top notification bar (Don't pull it down, just slide across the top). It's just like using the brightness slider in settings! This might not work if you have auto brightness enabled.

Ah, missed that due to the completely nondescript thread title My bad.

May be a bit bizarre wasnt sure whether to post here or in the Apps section.
Anyway the slide bar to unlock the phone is quite frustrating to be put right at the top of the screen (you may or may not agree) is there anyway to relocate it to the lower portion of the screen and have notification sliding bars going up instead of down?
hi,
take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=539577
i installed the 'HeartofWolf Lockscreen fix v4.cab' wich brings the slider down and th clock up.
mad.
If you start to slide the status bar down, and then slide your finger to the left or the right on the actual status bar, the screen brightness will adjust.
Sliding all the way to the right will give you brightest, and sliding all the way to the left will give you lowest setting for brightness, and there are some intermediate settings depending on how far to the left/right you go.
My i9000 does not have this feature.
Yes I have this and I use it often

This phone gets more awesome every day!
is it really the status bar or a swype on either direction at the top part of the screen
i remember something about controlling screen brightness by a diagonal swype from the top of the screen

I'm sure that your phone does have this feature, but you have to take the screen brightness out of automatic for it to work.
awesome....something new everyday!
you dont have to slide down, just swype across the notification bar, that is such a simple but cool feature
Lol im gonna start swiping everything on my screen next thing you know you swipe and a LED Flash shutter opens in the back

I'm surprised more people haven't noticed this feature, and Samsung has been so quiet about it.
It doesn't seem to work for me either. I've tried pulling the bar down just a little or all of the way.
You have to have it on manual brightness setting, and pull the status bar down just a few mm so that the grey part that would usually be the bottom edge of the status bar is fully exposed, but is right at the top of the screen, then swipe either left or right on the status bar.
I hope that makes sense
I have a problem where the screen brightness varies by itself without any input from me. I have turned off automatic brightness and set the screen brightness at the lowest level in an attempt to save battery life. However, when I use the phone at a later time I would recognize a difference in the screen brightness. When I go to check it in settings, the screen brightness level is set at a different level.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Go into settings sound and brightness and uncheck the power saving option at the bottom and ofcourse make sure u uncheck auto brightness.

also i read in another post that the TouchWiz user interface has a built in feature that will adjust brightness when you swip your finger at the top of the screen, making it brighter when you swipe left to right and dimming the screen when you swipe right to left.

That must be it! Thanks! I must have swiped left/right on the top of the screen without realizing it. Kind of annoying for them to sneak in a feature like that. I can see it being useful but I prefer the power control widget. Any idea how I can disable that feature of touchwiz?
getting ridd of touchwiz was the first thing i did when i got my epic so i dont really know much about it .

How did you get rid of touchwiz? I installed Launcherpro over it but that doesn't do away with touchwiz.
There was a thread on here for that from what i can remember, i cant look for it right at this moment because im at work but you should be able to find it yourself. Search for "removing touchwiz UI" if you cant find it go to google (it might have been a diff forum/Blog it was a few days ago).
You guys can change your home screen launcher, but you won't be able to get rid of TouchWiz until a vanilla ROM comes out. The ability to adjust adjust your brightness via swipe on the notification bar is - for better or worse (better imho) - not dependant on you using the TW launcher.

If you root the epic, you CAN manually uninstall all touchwiz packqages to remove the ui...
That notification taskbar swipe is pretty handy tho... thanks to whoever shared it... I like to keep my screen dim for the most part... but that is soooo much easier to use when, say I go outside and need to adjust quickly! It even works in landscape mode! Nice!

Root your Epic, download Root Explorer from market (worth the price), make sure you already have Launcher PRO running, then go to running applications and force close TouchWiz30Launcher then go to root explorer > system > app (make sure you mount it as r/w) > and delete TouchWiz30Launcher.apk and .odex, then reboot and that's it.
You can also use terminal app if you're familiar with commands.

That... is... awesome! Did not know that. Guess I can get rid of the brightness app since adjusting the brightness through the menu on the fly was painfully boring.
Do any of the new ROM's have the Brightness adjustment when you slide on the Notification Bar? It was on Eclair.
Nevermind I found one.
They should all have this feature. Just make sure auto brightness is turned off.

Not to start up a 5 day old thread; but I'm running Quantum Rom v2.0.0 and the slider bar in the notification window isn't there. And; I have the auto brightness off.
In fact; I don't think I've ever had it on any of the roms I've had since we switched to 2.2.

I must be losing it; cause I still don't see what you guys are talking about.
So here's a screenshot, hopefully I am just looking in the wrong place and it ends up I'm a moron.

Hold your thumb anywhere along the black status bar at the top to adjust your brightness. You need to have auto brightness turned off in order for it to work. It used to be that you could slide your finger along the status bar but it hasn't worked for me as of recent but long pressing it does. You don't need the entire notification screen pulled down, just have the status bar showing ie: If you have Launcher Pro hiding the status bar it will not work.
Got it!!
I thought it was going to be an actual slider like the Galaxy TAB has, but that is nice to have that hidden gem.
Thanks for the help!!
This is my most disliked "feature" on android. It is way to easy to inadvertently change the brightness when dragging the slider down. there should be a larger dead band around where your finger starts before the brightness change becomes active because most people do not swipe down perfectly straight every time. I have yet to make it a day without the thing changing brightness by mistake.
In fact as soon as we get the source, I'm going to compile a version with this "feature" removed...
Please remove,lol,thank you in advance

Hi all,
Just switched from CM to MIUI and so far quite liking the change. There are a couple of features from CM which I am missing a little and wondered whether there were any mods for them:
Ability to change brightness quickly by pulling top bar down slightly and adjusting left and right. Is there a patch around for this?
Abilitiy to tweak auto-brightness levels
Any other tips about MIUI worth knowing?
Cheers,
MIchael
try changing your toggle settings to page instead of compact. As for tweaking the auto settings..not sure about that

cheers for the reply... should have been more specific. On CM (and my last phone - Galaxy S) it was possible to pull the notification bar down slightly and then drag left to right to adjust. Was always nice an easy to do when out and about in bright sunlight when you cant see anything on the screen.
a brightness slider in the notification bar? ive never seen this but im interested
i thought the button in the notification bar was the only option

what I am talking about isnt a visible slider... its quite hard to explain but is demonstrated in this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgIaVNzwhjk . Its an option you can turn on somewhere in the CM settings
also, have found how to adjust auto-brightness levels in MIUI so ignore that request, just need to see if this brightness slider is possible.
Pull down the notification shade. If it is in page view, hit the backlight button. Once you hit the backlight button, a slider will appear on the bottom of the shade and you can adjust the brightness. It will be there any time you adjust the shade.
If your shade is in toggle view, put it in page view by hitting Settings>personal>toggle>page
Hope that helps
U can set max brightness by pressing together menu button and volume up
understand what you are asking for since I use CM a lot
but not available that way in MIUI yet
Actually, cyber, my slider don't even work
