Anyone know if there is any coverage in Tucson yet? I'm passing through here from Mesa and I wanted to put the 4G through its paces..

As far as I know, there is none in AZ at all. And, after the latest list for new 4G areas, AZ isn't getting any anytime soon.
shop.sprint.com/en/stores/popups/4G_coverage_popup.shtml
I've been doing a little research. From what I can tell, Clearwire has applied for permits, permission or zoning variances in four or five locations around Tucson: by the Tucson Mall, Pima/Alvernon, some place on the south side, and they received permission from Marana schools to build towers at a school in Continental Ranch (a mile from my house!) and near Ina and Thornydale, I think.
Also, there was a job posting for a Clearwire manager position back in December of 09.
Unless Clearwire is just building towers for the heck of it, or they sell some other service, I think it's on its way.

Just out of curiosity, where does one go to find out about such permit applications? I'd like to do some snooping on their progress in Phoenix.

Well, of course, google is your friend. I would try "City of Phoenix" and clearwire, for instance (if I cared about Phoenix )...check the city (for all those suburbs) and county websites and look for the development services or similar department. Many have their permit applications and such online. County Board meeting minutes, city council minutes are good sources as they usually grant zoning variances and permits. I found Clearwire seeking permission from the local school board by reading the minutes of the school board.
I've been an investigator for years, so this is second nature to me...let me know if you have other questions or my response is less than clear.
Hey, you're right! I found this little gem regarding Clearwire in the minutes from a recent public meeting:
Use permit to co-locate a visible wireless communication facility

Good news: it was approved!
Bad news: it's not near my part of town.
Thanks, inspector! I'll see what else I can dig up.
Found this too if you're down near Chandler - it's from earlier this year...actually, we have an office in Phoenix and I am there frequently...I wouldn't mind you guys getting some 4G, just after Tucson

I always laugh about the "not in my backyard" outcries every time someone wants to put up a cell tower. I gotta believe that many of those folks are the same ones who are always complaining about poor cell coverage in their area.
If Clearwire wants to put up a high-speed WiMAX tower in my backyard, I'll roll out the red carpet and hire a marching band...

Any word on when 4g will be coming to south Florida the guy I got my phone from. It should be out this month or next any news on this tried searching
I don't know about next month, but I'm relying on this as the definitive source of information:
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/cache_carey/2010/03/sprint-4g-coming-to-south-florida-this-year.html
I've spoken with people from Clear and Sprint. 4G doesn't come to Miami until Nov/Dec
Damn. That sucks I'm really surprised to hear that I was hoping. Sooner then that
Just an FYI
I have picked up a 4G signal while driving on I-95 south toward Downtown Miami. This has happenned twice already.
Since I am driving I could not really test it and I lose the signal quickly.
Any new update on this that's pretty cool u got reception that must mean not that far away

I live by flamingo and 595 LOL No signal at my house I will have to try driving north couple miles and see if I can find it, there is a Radio Shack and a Walmart that way so I guess it's possible one of them has a tower on thier roof.
Me and my brother have both picked up and sustained a faint 4g signal right off i95 and the golden glades interchange at our friend house
my wifes father actually works for a company that has a contract with Clear here in Florida. they are actually working on towers on the east coast and yes miami also. he says that because of bad communications and issues with Clear's wimax setup on the towers here in florida, have lead to them having to redo towers and such adding/removing hardware from the towers and doing the tedious setups over again on most of the towers that were already finished. the company her dad works for is actually pissed about the issues that have come about, because they are Clear's issues and fault. his company is having to redo alot of towers for little or nothing because of the contracts that were put into place at the time of bidding. this is all what he has told me and again hes nly hearing this stuff from hear say within the company he works for. but he also knows that Clear/Sprint are very aware of 4G coverage sucking/spotty/buggy at best. my recent trip to Atlanta i seen issues with the service. i believed it had to do more with me being root and stuff that comes with it then Sprint/Clears fault at the time. after speaking with her dad over the holiday i feel differently now. see he really knows little about what I/we do here and he knows more about what the service acts like for "normal users" and from the discussions with hm ive found out that "normal users" have all the same issues we do. even he notes Wimax/4G is a crappy service as of now and he feels like hes setting things up that arent being thought through very well. idk just thought id share. i live in central florida so 4G is a no go for a while for me :/

I'm in West Palm probably not too far from you. I hope they get this right and it doesn't take forever. That speed would be sweet...
Miami is on the official list for the Nov/Dec but I have also heard of people finding 4G in Orlando and over near Daytona. Up here you can connect to it but are still unable to use it.
I too live on flamingo and 595 lol...just to day on 595 around nob hill i saw it pop up then go way...the worst is at my work..(ft. laderdale) all day 4g comes in and out in the building im in...i can never actually connect to it it just says its available but when i click on it nothing happens then pops up again a few min later...strange thing is a coworker would put his evo right next to mine and wont pick anything up at all...we know his phone works bc he used 4g in DC a bunch of times...
TLDR
I got 4g notifications in Ft.Laderdale and 595 area but cant connect.
Clear tower climbs
As the last guy mentioned. I work for a radio shop and I was at a tower site where clearwire has been hanging the 2.3/2.5 ghz antennas and samsung base radios on this specific tower in delray. The system there is in test mode as the IP switches on them aren't fibered in yet. When I talk to the tower crew next week I will ask them for more exact ETA's on the tower/building sites they are doing down here.
Lebron to Miami 4g up next lol I'm just playing but I did get 4g reception on 595 to

I live over in East Orlando and I pick up a lot of 4G signal, but it always stalls out at obtaining an IP address. As I head over towards downtown Orlando and the west side of town, there is less and less 4G around. I'm hoping that 4G is turned on soon. It's a bit of a tease seeing the signal and not being able to use any of it

FYI:
There is already a "4G in Miami" thread on here. There's a lot to read about if you want to find 4G spots here. There are a few confirmed placed in Miami and Broward where 4G is active.

T-Mobile has no planned HSPA+ coverage for the "Triangle" in North Carolina?
WTF?
I went and checked the new HSPA+ Maps and coverage again. MAN! I live in the Capital of North Carolina (agreeable not exactly a HUGE Metropolis, LOL!) but it IS where Research Triangle Park is, Home to a fair amount of the East Coasts Tech Companies Lucent, Ericsson, VMware, Network Appliance Etc. (IBM where I work has 12,000 ppl here)
If Sprint can put their 4G Wimax here in Raleigh, why are we not even on the "coming soon" maps for TMOUS? I mean, they don;t even have PLANS to implement here? Meanwhile, the HAVE coverage in other places in the state, such as:
Charlotte?
Winston-Salem?
Fayetteville ??
Greensboro????
I mean, Fayetteville?
AARRRRGGGHHH!
I have been scouring these board for a long time, I came out of hiding for this one.
I'm in Raleigh too, I saw that map last week, I was thinking the exact same thing.
I can see Charlotte, it is a big city with a lot of people.
I can see Fayetteville, It is home to a bunch of military who deploy frequently.
I can maybe see Winston-Salem, that is the VA's main medical facility, and a lot of govt buildings.
But seriously, Greensboro???? WTF?
David
Ya it suks, but I just did a speed test (speakeasy) within RTP and I get 3mbps down and 1.5 up, which really is faster than what i'm getting with roadrunner crap at home. (unfortunately I don't get full HSDPA at home, especially downstairs, or else I would just use the phone instead).
Hopefully they'll roll out HSDPA+ in RTP at the start of 2011.
2011 is too long. I want it now *insert tantrum*
yeah but u gotta think... we were the last ppl in the state i think to get 3G coverage.... look at the coverage map. they seem like they bein cheap wit it. its all jumpy and only right near the city thats messed up. hope they have it in MD where i'm from so i can test it out somewhere atleast... this is bs i want 6 mb dl then i might cancel clearwire lol
Well it wasn't 2011, but it was close enough. HSPA+ FTW!!!!

Bro, I respect your opinion and knowledge. I used many of your roms in the diamond days. Where I work, we lease land to some tower companys, three of these are Sprints. The Sprint field techs I have spoke with have no knowledge of any immediate 4g upgrades, and no sign of any upcoming tower work has been present. No underground service alert markings, nada. Our companys own Sprint rep told us back in June, we would have 4g within two months. Nope. I will only believe the 4g hype when I see a man-lift sitting at one of those sites, and Sprint techs working on it. BTW, my local area is home to around a quarter of a million in SoCal.

I'm not saying that it will or won't be everywhere by the end of the year -- I'm just telling you what Sprint is officially telling customers. If I were you, I would go to Sprint.com and ask a rep via chat yourself. That way, if/when it's not "everywhere" by the end of the month, you may have a valid argument for some sort of credit to your account.

This makes me rage so hard. Yakima and Tri-Cities have 4G but they skipped the entire Spokane region and refuse to give out any sort of date to expect coverage.
From time to time, I flip on my 4G in a very small hope that the small city of Rome, Georgia with a population of about 30,000 will get 4G within the next few years. Today, I was a Starbucks having coffee with a friend and talking about 4G and how long we think it will take for Verizon or AT&T to get their 4G here. I've already dismissed Sprint ever getting it here because Sprint just closed their only store in town a month ago. Verizon and AT&T are the main providers here. So, I was telling them that 4G has to be turned on within the settings of the phone and demonstrated how to turn it on. I put the phone down and picked it up a few minutes later after receiving a text and I had to cover my mouth to prevent the very loud "WTF?!?!?!" that came out of my mouth as I noticed the 4G connected symbol in the status bar! What on Earth is 4G doing in this little town? Of course, I got online to see if I could find Rome listed on Sprint or Clearwire. It wasn't on Sprint, but sure enough, it was now listed on Clearwire as having 4G. It isn't listed as the super fast 4G area like Atlanta, but 4G nonetheless. I am getting 6.1 Mbps with one bar at home. I'd like to know when this network went up. And if it will stay. Anyone know where I could find some info? I chatted with Clearwire to see if they could tell me when it was activated, but they couldn't tell me. I'm going to tell everyone about it now. We have 4G before a lot of major cities... I'm super stoked!

Yeah they didn't boost it enough because we still don't have it where I live.
Don't feel too bad. Dallas was allegedly one of the debut cities and we still can't connect. Everyone i know with EVO's don't even bother trying to get a signal anymore.
Bear in mind other residential broadband services in NYC are absolutely terrible, with most choices in and around the 5 city boroughs being limited to the joke that is time warner cable/roadrunner or various copper loop/DSL providers.. many of which want to charge you $75/mo for 2mb/256k service.
FiOS is a pipe dream in the deep city and the way Verizon is going as an ISP isn't encouraging in the slightest.
Clear is really the *ONLY* choice for broadband service which is likely why they are targeting NYC - they have a massive advantage in not having to play the politics game for permits to dig up roads. All they need to do is put a tower up and they're done, not to mention the WIMAX channel advantage.

I was looking at that last night and thinking, no matter how great the EVO x is my EVO still holds it's own. Since Michigan will be blanketed in LTE by 2014, I am going to wait, Sprint has great plans, but lightsquared drama has to negatively impact their LTE roll out.
And why buy a phone in 2012 when I can't use 4G until a year or 2 years later. I did that with EVO, and assumed a Verizon kind of roll out.
I really hope Sprint stays on track with LTE roll out and they may retain me otherwise VZW with unlimited data might get my business (yes if u try hard enough u can get it)
Sent from my Synergized Aggressive Lionfish Evo using the XDA app
Yea, it says they will be ready by 2014, but with no specific rollout dates for my area, Michigan, I will be switching to Verizon in the next few months, once they get a nest gen phone like the One X or something similar. Verizon has had working 4g for over a year in my area now. There's no way I'm waiting another 2 years to get it here, and have dial-up speed 3g in the meantime. I gave Sprint 12 years of my business, and I hate to leave, but in today's world data is everything, and I need that to be able to do my job.
With the announcement one the HTC EVO One for Sprint, I am puzzled as to how they decide what cities to start their rollout of LTE. San Antonio? Baltimore? Kansas City?
No New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, etc.
OK, so Houston and Dallas. Meh.
With an LTE iPhone possibly coming out later this year, how many iPhonies do they think will hang on waiting while both Verizon and AT&T (yuk) are offering LTE in the biggest markets?
Sure, they're saying just wait, but really, how many people have the discipline? I probably will, but only because returning to AT&T is not an option as far as I'm concerned, and I hear horror stories about big red nickle and dimeing their customers.
What incentive do I have to get the HTC EVO One when there won't be any LTE here in LA, while my old EVO can still use WiMax?
On an unrelated question: does anyone know if LTE phones automatically switch between 3G and LTE? One thing I always hated about WiMax is having to manually turn it on every time I want to use it!
Pretty sure LTE would require manual control just like WiMax.

Hey now! Some of use are awful excited that Dallas is on that list!
But seriously. I'm wondering if the Dallas choice was because of the AT&T headquarters and the fact that Sprint phones are getting MURDERED by att speeds. (At least where i'm at)
Nothing against Dallas. Texas is a great country.
I just think Sprint needs to make a big splash about LTE if they want to limit churn. Dan Hesse has done an outstanding job so far, imo. But if I were in charge of Sprint, I would make NY,and LA, among the first cities, just for PR purposes.
Even aliens know to blow up one of those two cities when they first invade Earth!

FIRST ROUND MARKETS (14):
First round markets have no preceding markets before them. NV OEM's will mobilize in these markets and begin deployment. These markets will deploy slowly as there is a significant learning curve to Network Vision. Most first round markets started between December 2011 and March 2012.

SECOND ROUND MARKETS (27):
Second round markets start based on First Round markets completing before them. There is a lot of variability of when Second Round markets start, between June/July 2012 and December 2012. It will all depend on how quickly the First Round market deployments go. Some preliminary work is being done in advance in these Second Markets as well. It's possible that if delays begin to occur in the First Round markets, NV OEM's may hire up additional subcontractors and get some key Second Round markets going. I also heard that maybe just maybe the Note may be coming over as well the HTC One... Sprint may be stepping there game up.. After reading up on the new HTC phone I may be coming back as long as though LTE speeds kick in like they should in my area...
Michigan part of the 2nd wave and no Ohio, c'mon man! This is why I hate Ohio, can't wait to move..LOL

I don't know about the rest of you, but forget LTE coverage -- I'm just waiting for Sprint to get regular coverage on the tower that's been my in my neighborhood like they promised (and their coverage map showed) for the last 3 years!
I have found the Wimax coverage in Florida to be more than adequate. No, I can't get it at my house, but I have WiFi there. But just about everywhere else when I'm traveling or in even small local cities, I get Wimax.
Sprint is about two years behind on LTE. Not very enticing to stay with them after my contract is up in the Fall. The only reason why I didn't demand early contract termination is because I like my EVO 4G phone and don't feel like spending another $300 on a new Verizon phone at the moment.
Nah Verizons, and att switches. So sprints will prob
