offical update for FW? - Galaxy S I9000 General

hey i will probably get my phone this week and im wondering if you guys knew anything about an official update of the FW from samsung for europe? i mean if i install like 50 apps and then the day after they release the new firm and everything need to be reinstall

No, you don't need to reinstall.
An update is exactly what it says it is, an update.

ZAnwar,
Can I assume that my contact, calendar, and my few hundred rounds of golf score in an application called GolfCard Pro will all be untouched during the update?

If you're on an untouched official firmware, and update to another official one via official methods, as in Over The Air or using Kies, I see no reason why anything would change.
If you're still sceptical, I would backup all SD contents (and internal, if any).

If you look at the topic 'GPS Problems - The Poll' you will notice there has been a lot of talk on the JF6 update.
In there I mention Clove who informed me according to the Samsung representative and then quoted by Clove ~ "They did make us aware that the upgrade would delete all user data so a backup should be performed first."
Now you could question who is right and who is wrong here but we are talking of altering the ROM and for that to happen it is going to have to erase all data to achieve the update.

Not inside the phone no.....
You need to look at external backup programs.
Take a look at either Sprite Mobile or My Backup Pro
Sprite will back up not just to your SD card but online as well. DropBox being my choice.
My Backup Pro will backup either your Apps (although backing up paid apps is against the law) or other areas of your system.
It also has a free My Backup (the non-pro version) but this is not as strong.
Both are good programs. I've used Sprite for years on WM but they are lousy at answering any messages.

If your phone is rooted then mybackup pro can basically restore your phone to the way it was before the flash. But you have to root before and after the flash or it won't work. I just did it and the only things it didn't do was restore the APN settings, ringtones and wallpaper. I found out that flashing with odin does not wipe the internal memory card but I did not select repartition.

General Q regarding Titanium use.

Backing up and restoring on very similar ROMs seems to include three parts: 1. System data, 2. Applications, and 3. App data.
Let's bring up an example going from stock 2.1 ROM to one of Eugene's Vibrant* or Hybrid ROMs or even one of the Bionix(?) ROMs. What is the consensus of moving stuff over to the new ROM? Restore all three parts; only Applications and App data; or only Applications?
I'm sort of confused as to what to bring over to the new ROM. Thanks.
I think this is what I do in the same order as given below
- Install ROM manager and take a nandroid backup (for system) of the stock ROM
- Install Titanium backup(TB) and take backup of user data, user apps and some system data (like wifi settings)
- Take a backup of the internal SD card to computer (optional)
- Flash the new ROM via clockwork recovery
- Install TB from market and restore all user apps/data from backup
You should be good to go. I assume that the custom ROM you flash has all required system apps that you will need.
Pro Tip: Get Titanium Backup Donate version.. otherwise you're going to have a terrible time restoring apps with the non-donated version.

Right. I don't even think it's even possible to backup system apps, that's why I mentioned only system app data. So, even system data usually or always restores well to new ROMs?

Because the full version lets you restore/backup in a batch, so you don't have to *click* *click* *click* a hundred times.
I dont think its right that free version of TB wont allow batch restore. Only thing that will be missed from donate version is fast restore using hypershell. I have not personally used the app, so this is based on what I have read.

Nope. Just back up. No batch restore. I think there's some other advanced functions that the free one won't do as well, but it's been a LONG time since I used the free one.
A small caveat regarding Titanium. There are a small handful of apps that don't behave after being restored - one that comes to mind right away is Google Voice. If you find an app FCs after being restored, just uninstall and re-download from the Market.
I am sure it doesn't, I bought the donate version and only then was I able to batch restore. Also the restores then were able to restore some programs I couldn't restore before.
Alright, then I guess I'll be donating tonight!

How do Update my galaxy S to froyo?

Hi
I got a message from vodafone today about froyo
yey
but I really want to 'not muck everything up'
I rooted my phone with one click rooter to use titanium backup pro.
My questions:
Should i back up using Nandriod before i attempt the froyo update?
Is Nandriod easy to use? how do i use it?
How do update to Froyo?
Should I unroot my phone using the one click rooter before
and reroot to 2.2 after? (using the one click rooter)
Sorry for all the obvious questions
Can you guys help?
I was previously on JPC froyo, rooted & lag fixed. I use my backup pro for my backup. All I did to update via kies was backup the stuff I wanted, I didn't un-root I just did a factory reset, wiped the cache, then let Kies do its thing. Rebooted, applied a OCLF & Root then restored.
I used the Samsung KIES software. (cheers for the tip)
It took ages to update the software and i had to keep pressing retry i turn kaspersky off at one point but I'm not sure if that helped speed it up any.
I unrooted my phone
Did the Update through Samsung KIES software
the update
removed my desktop icons
and rearranged my apps list to alphabetical
but i get a cool new beach live wallpaper
but where is the autumn leaves one?
GMail app now shows full message
all good
but still GMail get things stuck in outbox esp video
and the TEXT app - 420 character text convert to MMS is still there
but it seems faster overall
and i had to reroot with
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
and i used titanium backup pro to remove the vodafone spam apps
You can get the Autum leaves LWP again there's a topic about how to get it here.
I followed a suggested guide on Vodas eForum, but included my own backup step......
1. On 2.1 installed MyBackup (Free 30 Day trial) from the market and backed up my apps and data to local sd card.
2. Download KIES from http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/d...enter.samsung.com/content/&ModelName=GT-I9000 (http://www.samsungmobile.co.uk/support/softwaremanuals/software.do?phone_model=GT-I9000)
3. Manually copy off music and images and my backups from the sd card to my PC
4. Installed Kies
5. Factory reset phone (recommended)
6. Update via Kies*
7. Restore music and pictures from PC to phone.
8. Copy mybackup folder form 'sd' directory to 'external_sd' directory and restored data and apps.
* Also found that you need Windows Media player 11 for the MTA drivers to work, certainly did on my XP box.
Faffing around it took me about an hour and a half as I wanted to make sure everything was backed up. Only adverse affect is that games havent kept my progress/saved games, another good excuse to trash them again. Oh and the restored texts have the same date and time (time of restore) rather than the original sent times - meh, I'm not bothered 2.2 is better.

[Q] Best Out... ?

I bought a Desire Z about two weeks before the 1.72.405.2 OTA update came along, and I allowed it to update (Yeah I know, this was after all my first Android device).
Anyway, lately my phones been running slowly and apps force closing, so I've decided to downgrade it and root it (psneuter method), and try some different ROM's.
What I was wondering is, what would be the best way without root, to backup as much of my data as possible, apps, sms, files, and also if possible a backup that I can use in case I scew it up, so I can get it back to the way it is now.
I have a copy of:-
RUU_Vision_HTC_WWE_1.34.405.5_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155556_signed
which I believe is the stock ROM for this device, but as far as I know if it goes wrong I'll be unable to flash this as the update won't allow me to flash an earlier version..
Would I be able to mount and then backup the whole phone using adb or any other method.
I've been reading about it for a while now, and while I have lots of bits of information, I've been unable to find a good solution.
Thanks,
...John...

Without root, a good app to backup your other apps is astro file manager, its available free from the market, you just have to hit menu, tools and it'll back up all the apps on your sd card, in terms of files, just make sure their all on your sd card and they'll be fine
Not sure how to back up SmS but i know their are apps out their, a point you may have forgotten is to make sure you back up your contacts as they all get wiped and I made this mistake, the easiest way to do that is to make sure your contacts sync up with your google account so after rooting, you can just sync them back,
Hope i helped!
Use google to remember what apps you've downloaded from market. Once associated, when you flash a new rom, google will automatically redownload all your associated apps. For sms, i suggest you download GoSMS and use their internal backup feature. It will save to sd and be visible to your stock sms app as well on restore.
Sent from my AOSP Virtuous Desire Z using XDA App
Ya but too many times google starts restoring apps that I uninstalled months ago. Great idea but bad implementation imo.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Sorry I haven't replied, was in work all day yesterday.
I have Astro File Manager, but I hadn't even considered it, thanks. I have my contacts sync'd with Google, so it seems that as long as I backup my files and sms everything else should be done automatically anyway.
Go SMS seems worth getting anyway, as the bog standard Android messages app is seriously dull. I'll give it a try.
I had wondered about Google Market restoring apps, but I thought it would only reinstall apps that were installed at the last sync.
If you install an app and it screws up your phone, and do a factory reset then Google will just reinstall the app that caused all the problems in the first place.
Definitely a good idea, but needs more work.
Anyway, thanks for all the info, I'll give it try tonight, when I get back from work.
...John...
I find SMS Backup & Restore to be the best app for this purpose and I wouldn't recommend the backup feature from the market, as you said it is likely to give problems.
Without root though, the backup choices are somewhat limited for apps and such.
I've been using Super Manager by gpc. It works pretty good, plus offers a ton of other features that can be used with or without root.
I've backed up what I could, although it's typical that as soon as it's all gone I realised things that I should have wrote down (I had been using the wallet/pocket app and although I backed up all my apps, I'm guesing it won't have backed up any of the passwords, logins, bank details, etc).
Anyway, I've downgraded and successfully rooted my phone (through gfree), I have CID: 11111111 and S-Off, but I haven't installed and ROM's yet as I read somewhere that you are supposed to wipe everything between ROM's, am I wiping the Davlik cache or doing a factory reset (I mean won't the factory reset just reset my stock ROM back to it's original condition).
I'm also wondering about finding custom ROMs, on my dell streak I had installed ROM Manager and could get a list of any that were available.
I first installed ROM Manager and used it to flash recovery, but this time I've installed CWM first, so would it be safe to install ROM Manager now, will it want to flash a recovery over the one I have already.
Or is it not advisable to use ROM Manager, as I have previously heard of a few problems it may cause.
Thanks ...John...
Rom manager shouldn't give any problems, but for custom roms it's best to take a look at the development forum. If you don't like that you can still use the list in rommanager, it might be just me who prefers downloading roms to my pc first.
But before you install any of them I recommend you make a nandroid backup from recovery just to be safe.
I think the issues were that some people, not all, found problems flashing some of the gingerbread roms via Rom manager. Better to save the Rom to SD and then flash it via CWM.
Right I've done a nandroid backup, and I've saved one to another mSD card which I can keep somewhere just in case (probably a bit over cautious, but...).
I thought that by saving apps to an sd card, they would run from the sd when I restarted my phone, even the ones that I had moved previously with the application manager in settings are not seen.
Still reinstalling the ones I want isn't really that bad.
Seriously, somebody needs to sort out the Markets app backups feature, when I was setting up the phone at first, I specifically chose to not automatically sync with Google and that I would do it manually when needed. Then I went in to the market to get a file manager and the download failed, it was only when I looked at what was going on I realised it was already downloading and reinstalling 96 apps. I looked around for a 'cancel all' option and there isn't any, so I had to cancel them all one by one and then uninstall the ones that had managed to install.
A simple checklist to select the apps you want would be great, oh, and a cancel all button would be a bonus.
Anyway, things are not as much fun when they're too easy.
Thanks ...John...

[Q] Noob questions galore ;)

Hi guys,
First of all (in case you didn't realize it), I'm an android noob. This is my first Android phone (my employer tried to give me an iPhone, but caved when I told them I'd just stick it in my drawer and save it as an emergency phone) and I just rooted it
Now...I made a backup of it after rooting. This should get me back to stock if I need it, right? Should I copy it off the phone? I guess it will be removed if I have to wipe...?...
Also; will I retain my settings, sms/mms etc etc if I use a custom ROM? This is my main concern at the moment, as I want something more fancy and hopefully less energy consuming ROM.
Cheers!

Hi there!
if you made the backup just after rooting, if you run that Backup (through CWM etc) it will revert the phone back to how it was at the time of the backup, so if you didnt have any settings, sms,Apps etc they will not show. you can copy the backup file if you wish to but i believe (not 100%) the backups are stored on External SD and as a result are not lost on a Factory Reset/Wipe
Some Custom ROMS (Litening ROM i use) allow you to flash with no loss of data, including all your apps, SMS and settings. Basically you have the exact same phone layout but with a Spiffy, fast,Fresh rom they are really easy to flash with ODIN, now im not sure if other Roms (Villain, Cognition, etc) retain the Data partition on flashing you would need to check out the specific Threads on the Android Development section of the forum
hope that helped !
Thanks - that was helpful I will look into the other ROMS and decide from there.
Do you know if any of the SGS2 ROMs have more themes available? I get bored easily, and it would be great to change the look and feel every now and then
well being that the phone is still relatively new and still not available for the North American market, the development for it is still small. However, the CM7 team are developing roms for it, and a lot of other custom roms are based off CM7, so there should be a good selection of roms in the near future. the sgs2 is one of, if not the most anticipated android device this year, so i'm sure rom selection wouldn't be a problem.
Thanks, guys
I just bought Titanium Backup after some recommendation in another thread. Is there anything I should be aware of, or any recommendations, when making a backup before trying out other ROMs?

Whenever i do anything such as update/change my ROM, i do a Ti backup of all my apps (incase they go missing) then a CWM backup of my System which i can roll back to if i have any problems
Also, just to 2nd what p00kienrayray Said, the only ROMS i know of which support themes are MIUI and CM7 which should hopefully work fully soon

Yes, there *definitely is* a recommendation, when making a backup before trying a rom which wipes your phone, check out the message I sent to TB developer..
"Hi, I bought titanium few days ago to help the transition from my Magic to the new Galaxy S2. I used to use My backup Pro but appreciated the apps freezing function of Titanium that could possibly help avoid the battery drain problem on the S2 due to the Samsung WiFi sharing bug.
I had quite a bad experience, though, regarding a hard reset I had to perform on the phone, which I previously backed up with Titanium: the default backup directory is /mnt/sdcard but that corresponds to the internal memory on the S2, while the external one is located in /mnt/sdcard/external_sd (if I am not wrong). That led to losing a week worth of photos (the one part I couldn't really get back, given that I had a week old backup made with SMS Backup & Restore + Call Log backup & Restore made on the Magic).
Ok, lesson learnt for me but may I suggest that the default directory can be automatically set to /mnt/sdcard/external_sd if the terminal is an S2, for future users not to be unsatisfied? Is it something that could be implemented in TB?
Thanks for listening,
*************
PS well, shame on Samsung as well for such a weird choice... I would have set /mnt/sdcard for the external one and /mnt/internal_sd for the internal one... and don't understand why the hard reset (performed through the *2737*3655# code - if I remember correctly) does reset the internal memory which if I am not wrong is a separate partition from the system."
CONFIGURE YOUR TB BACKUP DIR TO /mnt/sdcard/external_sd BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE
Not to mention that some apps like SMS Backup & Restore do not allow you to change the dir, therefore you have to manually move the backup results after you have finished

[Q] Titanium Backup: why create new APKs of the same version when updating data?

So basically I needed an an APK for an older version of an app and it had already been overwritten. I allow 3 copies of backups with TiBu but my scheduled "redo backups for modified data" overwrites them quite often. I end up with 3 backups of the same app but they're all for the same version. The old version gets deleted because my scheduled "redo backups with modified data" detects new data and then does a new backup.
I wish it would only update the data and not the APK? What's the point of constantly updating the APK for an app when the version is still the same.
Yes, I want it to constantly update the data so I have the latest backup all the time, but it would be nice if it could do that and always save the last 2-3 APK versions as well...
Am I totally missing something here is it just the way it works for now? Thanks for any help!

There is an option to update 'app only', 'app + data', 'data only'.
Do you have an old Nandroid with the older version of the app available? If so just go into your Nandroid backup and pull out that APK.

You can try either of these apps from the Play Store. They both allow you to back up data only:

Good Recommendation! there often are older versions of the app in nandroid backups, and TIBU will allow restore from Nandroid backups.
1. Go to the Main Menu
2. Scroll down to the Special Backup/Restore Menu (5th topic down)
3. select "EXTRACT FROM NANDROID BACKUP"
4. you will get a listing of all your nandroid backups and you can chose the one you want to take the app from.
5. It will take a bit to analyze the Nandroid and present you with the files menu.
6. Choose the file(s) you need to restore and do it!

#1. Since you may have already "lost" the old version of the app because it has been updated, then to find an oilder version you could check some of the other app stores that frequently offer older versions of apps -some app stores have a listing of ALL versions of (some) apps! . . . so you can check them and see if you can find the older version --or even email the author of the app...:cyclops:
#2. Once you get your old app back, one option is to make a copy of the "good version" of that app from your apps directory and place it on your SD card or a data directory and keep overwriting the "new" app when the author publishes a new version.:good: :good:
#3. Also, once you get you app back (hopefully!) It sounds to me like you should turn off PLAY STORE AUTOMATIC UPDATING for this app. You do this once and then allow selective apps to auto update -but not allow global updating of apps. SO manually permit or don't permit updates depending upon the app (I do that with my Kindle Fire HD, since play wants to update the Amazon store -but that breaks the built in Kindle store, so I don't allow that app to update automatically).
Good Luck!

I checked my old Nandroids/TiBu backups but could not find the APK - did that before making this thread. Trust me I have automatic updating off...I like to read change logs before accepting any updates.
My problem with TiBu is still unaddressed though...even if I allow TiBu to keep, say, 5 backups of each app...if I have a scheduled backup to "redo backups with modified data" and the data is modified in a certain app each time, once that runs 5 times I will have 5 backups of the same version APK along with 5 separate data points.
The 5 separate data points are exactly what you'd want...but if creating 5 APKs of the same version of the app ends up deleting the 6th backup which had the older APK version...what's the point of that? I'm left with 5 identical APKs and the older version, which I actually wanted, got to deleted because TiBu needed to backup the data.
Does that make sense?

OK, I think I get it. TIBU will backup all copies it sees but it is not "smart enough" to preserve versions per se. (I may be wrong -but that's what I see so far). The six copies you mention are time based vice version based, so it's good logic for what it does. It just does not save based on versions. . . Perhaps that is an option we should ask the developer for! I think the focus of the frequent multiple backups is primarily on data, so it's good , but maybe not enough!
I just checked my own backups. I have max backup history of 5 and those 5 backups are done one by one over a two week period (of course). So I have many copies of each app that are identical --except when changes occur. Most apps right now have 5 identical copies, but for 7Zipper, Handnote and Gmail,(for example) each of them has two versions. I won't lose the "older versions" of these apps for a week or so, but after that they will disappear if I want ot save those older versions, well, I would have to take one of the measures that I mentioned before (copying over to another directory etc.)
I was going to ask -since you turned off auto updates-- how the app got updated, but I have discovered that even when I do that there is the occassional app that updates anyway -because I inadvertently said yes to some prompt, or perhaps the author had some auto update feature that I could not block. . .
Sorry I can't give you a better solution. . .

It sounds like you get my point now! Basically, TiBu should be smart enough to backup data and app apks as separate items. When I say keep 3 copies, it should look at those separately...keep the 3 last APK versions and keep the 3 last data backups...not combine them and overwrite APK versions just because data got updated too.
What happened was I updated the app two weeks ago and everything was fine...I then switched to Goldeneye 4.0 ROM and the WatchESPN app wouldn't load anymore. I read other people in the Play Store had the same problem...so I am guessing that perhaps it's an international firmware issue...since it still works fine when I switch back to AT&T stock MDL. The second data is that some of those complaining in the Play Store reviews are saying "since the last update, it doesn't load"...so I'm thinking maybe the latest update broke something for international firmware versions...so if I can find the old version that might work...but no way to test it without getting the APK.
Ok, you are right about the apps vs. Data thing exactly for the reasons you mention!
(Btw, I almost decided to try golden eye this weekend, but Shostock2.1 is running so well that I'll just use my phone for a while)..
I did a very quick look at some alternate android app stores on my phone just now, but am surprised that I have not found the watch-espn app...
The only other thing might be if you kept a copy of your sd card on your computer, and that copy might have an old nandroid with the app... that worked for me - when I wanted to restore and use flex t9 and the company had moved on to a swype version I did not like as much...
Good luck (I'll continue to scan for old versions of watchespn when I get on a desktop..)

Thanks! If I hadn't used all 8 of my thanks clicks for the day I'd give you one. First thing tomorrow though!
If you find any leads let me know in my WatchESPN request thread (linked above). It needs to be bumped anyways and I am not supposed to bump it until 24 hours! lol
I'm still surprised I can't find any other threads/discussion about this issue.
I'd really think that one of the priorities of the backup is to keep old apk versions in case you want to roll back...
bump!
So I realized today that TiBu doesn't actually keep multiple copies of the same APK - it is smart enough to know they're the same and save space by only keeping one, no matter how many data backups you have.
However, if you have multiple versions of the APK, it will keep both versions...until the data that was backed up at the same time as the old APK version gets deleted...then the old APK version will be deleted as well.
I sent a support email to the dev of TiBu asking this question...will post here if I get a response.
Thanks, I've used TIBU as long as I have had android phones and still didn't realize that version saving was missing -or that TIBU saves only one copy of each version. It's such s good app..I bet the author will reply and may add that extra functionality...

I hope so.
Almost 5 days since I emailed them and no response yet.
an idea is to make a special backup to google drive or box or drop box and save a backup there with the configuration you like and leave it there. . .sort of as a safe haven for when the devs update the apps in a way that doesn't do good things for your phone!
not a perfect solution, but at least it does push the app(s) somewhere out of the way in an automated manner. . .

Yeah but there's no "configuration I like". You never know when you're going to update an app and find out later that you want to roll back...
Any update to this Issue?
Could this have Something to do with this option?:
