Wired (USB) Tether - Droid Eris Android Development

Hello, I'm running KFv23 and I can't use either wired tether for root users or built in froyo wired tethering. In the Evil Eris roms, wired tether was built in and worked perfectly. In kaos froyo, I am unable to get wired tether working without any extra software (such as pay-for software for non root). Wireless tether works perfectly, but my phone gets extremely hot when I use it and if I am in a car, wired tether is the most sensible choice. Has anyone been able to get wired tether working in froyo, and if so, share

I don't know specifically but KF is a very new ROM and it's Froyo so don't expect everything to work perfectly.

Not sure about it in KaosFroyo, But i know in the CM6(froyo) test build by tazzpatriot, wired tether worked fine for me..

My Eris fits perfectly snug in the fins of an air conditioning vent in my truck. Even with the fan-only on it stays nice and cool. I just pull it out to use it and pop it right back in.
I just hooked up via USB using Fresh 3.0 to get online and edit this note. Fresh 3.0 is has been a super solid ROM for me too. Flawless a2sd. I have 93 apps and 130M free. All the Froyo ROMs are too inconsistent for me and none of the wired internet works.

*Shrug* I just use PDANet and don't have any problems going that route. EasyTether works too, but you do have to shell out a few bucks for the Pro version (for both PDA and Easy) to visit secure sites which kind of sucks, but where there's a will, there's a way...

Dilemma

So I have to pick between the Sprint HTC EVO and the Verizon Droid X. I love ROMs and all, but the only thing I NEED is to be able to USB teether without installing anything else on the computer I am using. They are generally locked down and do not allow installs to run. This being said, Which would you choose? I do not need the teether ability right away, but would need it sooner than later. Go with the DX or the Evo? Seeing as the DX is getting Froyo this month, I am leaning towards it, but how far away is USB teethering?
use pdanet and any android phone can usb tether out of the box. without root.
The only problem with that is there are quite a few of the PC's I work on that are locked down and I can not install PDAnet on the PC end. With built in USB teether, I just have to make a setting on the phone, then hook it up and the PC sees it as a WAN. Shane.
Have you checked out the bluetooth tethering options? They sell a tiny little USB gadget at Staples or Best Buy that will give the PC bluetooth, then there is some hack or something on these forums that will enable you to bluetooth tether the interwebz.
I'd love to be able to post the links I have for you but the mods won't let me....sorry... but it is possible.
Search this same forum for bluetooth tethering, then Google targus bluetooth USB

The OP said that he can't install anything on his computer, which is required to be able to use PDAnet.
It is likely that the OP knows this already, but tethering without downloading anything onto a computer is possible now that the X has been rooted.
I sure do Now...can it USB teether? Or only through BlueTooth? or is that only in FroYo.
Wireless Tether for root users. It's an app you can use once you root your X to creat a wifi hotspot, without being charge by Verizon.

tethering and external memory drives on A70

Hi,
I've been trying to connect my A70 to my HTC Hero for internet tethering but it just doesn't work.
I've tried the following methods
1. USB
2. Bluetooth
3. wireless tethering (android wifi tethering)
num 1 doesn't detect my phone at all, num 2 can be paired as through BT but can't tether and for num 3, my A70 can't detect my HTC Hero as a hotspot, it can detect all others ard it but just not my HTC Hero.
I have another issue with connecting my thumbdrive and external card reader through the micro USB port.
I have a host adapter bought through ebay and i tried connecting my thumbdrive and card reader but there's no reaction from the A70 at all. my card reader has a LED light to indicate whether there's power and it was lit up when connected but the A70 just doesn't read it.
I've tried another way which is to connect a external HDD whcih i used a Y-cable and connected the other end to a power source to ensure there's enough power but again the A70 doesn't pickup anything.
I'm really getting frustrated with these issues cause these 2 features were the selling point to me when i bought the A70 and now i can't use it.
Appreciate if someone can shed some light on this.
thanks
For the USB issues, you may be using the wrong cable. You need to use a USB host cable in order to read a thumb drive or to use an Android (or other) phone's USB tether. The cord that comes with the A70 is a MicroUSB B connector; you need a MicroUSB A.
As far as the WiFi hotspot on your Hero, does the hero do only ad hoc WiFi? I know the Droid 1 does. You cannot (at this point, without rooting and rearranging some code) hook the Archos up to an ad hoc WiFi.
For bluetooth, you need to use Wireless Tether on your Android handset, but you have to have the app set for bluetooth. Get that set, pair the devices, and start the bluetooth tether on your Hero. Then, go into the Archos menu under Cell Phone Tethering and choose your Hero (should be under available devices). Hit tether and you're good to go.

...maybe. I have a rooted HTC Incredible with Wireless Tether installed. A70 works great with wifi (which is the better option anyway), but will not tether with bluetooth. It will pair, but the phone doesn't show up as an available device in the A70 tethering setup. There may be another bluetooth tether phone app that will work with my Inc, but Wireless Tether does not. There is even a disclaimer in the app about incompatibility with some phones.

[Q] Bluetooth tether from Transformer to Droid Incredible?

Will the Asus Transformer support bluetooth DUN to tether to an android phone (I have a Droid Incredible) with pdanet/similar? I'd prefer bluetooth vastly to using a wifi setup due to battery drain. Has anyone poked around and seen if it can be done? Thanks!
I'm pretty sure it will to a point. On the xoom, bluetooth tethering is built right into honeycomb.
But the one problem is the only program I've got it to work with it the bluetooth tethering with the Wireless Tethering app. PDAnet won't work. I tried it with several phones.
Just fire up one of the older versions of wireless tether with bluetooth still included, and fire up bluetooth tehtering then it should show up as an option under the phone after you've paired the tablet with it.
Works great on my (much older) HTC hero so shouldn't have any problems on the Droid incredible.
Bluetooth Tether to Transformer?
I just want to clarify the original question... I would assume that you mean you want to tether your 3G connection from your phone to your ASUS Transformer?
I would like to know if it works from my Droid 1 to the Asus Transformer, just like the Xoom does. I tested this function at a store with the Xoom and it was easy and flawless. Just hoping it works on the Transformer.
Rooted Droid 1 (Wireless Tether App) -Stock rooted Froyo 2.2.2 (FRG83G)
Wireless Tether App in is Bluetooth mode.

Yup, that's what I meant: Take the 3g connection from my phone, and give it to the Transformer (by tethering the Transformer to the phone).
I have the same question regarding BT DUN tethering. I think the default BT tethering in the Android Honeycomb is BT PAN (not DUN). If anybody can confirm that Honeycomb does have a BT DUN profile, that will be great.
I'm currently using PDANet as well to tether my Evo to my netbook. It works great.
If the honeycomb does not support BT DUN, then most likely I would have to root my Evo and install another custom ROM just to enable the BT tethering.
I have my rooted Motorola Atrix tethered via Bluetooth to share my 3g connection on my transformer. Works a treat and the speed us very good.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Probably great news!!!

Sounds like this will probably work for my rooted Droid 1 then. Maybe this is a feature of honeycomb, the processor or something. At first I was thinking the Xoom worked because both devices were made by Motorola.
My Transformer isnt showing the PAN service from my Samsung Galaxy running Wireless tether
Root in bluetooth mode.
Yes i have allowed the program access in superuser.

Bluetooth tetherng
Does this mean my phone has to be rooted before I can tether it to my TF? I really don't want to root my droid if at all possible. I've seen what has happened to my sons iPad. It was a mess! Also, what app am I installing on my Droid? There are no mention of any apps I need to install.
Thanks!

Did you tether your atrix to transformer using the app pdanet Bluetooth (DUN)? Can you tell us exactly how you set this up? I'm in the midst of getting an atrix and I'm just wondering beforehand. Thanks a lot.
I use wireless tether using bluetooth on my incredible just fine. I am, however, rooted and using CM7, but it can be done. You have to pair the wo together of course.
I was having difficulty connecting my Magic running CM6 to my Transformer via Bluetooth until I was told to install the Bluetooth File Transfer app first. Did that and it connected just fine after.
bluetooth tethering
Eeepad and htc hero.
Htc hero is rooted and the froydvillian 1.7.2-r2 rom and android version 2.2.1.
Installed wireless tether from the market (free).
Eeepad transformer has android honeycomb 3.1 newest update from asus website.
Paired thru bluetooth then start up wireless tether on the phone and there is the extra function under the wrench at the bluetooth menu from the eeepad.
I also enabled bluetooth tethering on the eeepad.
Works great and fast......

CONFIG_BT_BNEP question

Hey everyone.
I want to use my Droid Charge to bluetooth tether to my transformer. I use pdanet tablet now which works, but has a few downfalls that I would like to go around.
My charge is rooted, and the kernel has "CONFIG_BT_BNEP" in it, which as I understand should make the internet connect option available in a regular bluetooth link. Unfortunately, it does not have the connect option. Any ideas why or what else is needed?

Is it possible to use a WII lan adapter for wired network with the A500?

Is it possible to use a WII lan adapter for wired network with the A500?
I cant say for sure without trying it, but I wouldn't expect it to without going to a fair bit of effort... I'd think by far the easiest option would be to pick up a cheap wifi router..
That being said, I can see where there would be advantages to using something like that wii adaptor (ie at work if your office only has a wired lan.. cant see too many system administrators being happy about you installing a new router in the office..)
*shrugs*
I just got wired network partly working using a Netgear FA101 USB ethernet adapter. It's not 100% as lots of apps (such as the market or network scanning software) check wifi state before running rather than for any other network interfaces.
To get it working I am using Thor A500/A501 Kernel v3.9r3 for HC 3.2 and i have to run "dhcpcd eth0" after plugging it in.
I'm guessing you'll have to use a rooted device and custom kernel like this. You also won't be able to do everything... web browsing works (though complains on load) as does Trillian and a few other things. Maps also work, though it complains as well to turn on wifi. The market does not work, it looks like you can browse it but downloads won't start until wifi is up again.
