Good idea.......
would be a very nice mod.

i was thinking the same thing since the first time i picked up the phone i thought the lock button would be on top and that the actual lock button was the camera button haha. but yeah i think itd be awesome to disable it when the camera is in use...and if we could disable the stupid low battery warning when the cam is in use too....we've got a notification led fix in the works already, a recovery image is being worked on, some devs are planning on porting CM6 to this phone, GPS and compass i believe are fixed for those who had problems with them, nightmode works a treat, so all we need are those 2 mods and i think the vibrant will be perfect...well for me anyway but im sure many would agree lol.
Even the lock/power button would be perfect.

i wonder if the cm6 port would incorporate it...idk why samsung didnt include a camera button, then again im surprised how they squeezed so many features and tons of horsepower into this light little thing in the first place haha
+1 this would be a great add-on
I agree. This would be excellent!
can someone with twitter send this to wesgarner? i would but i dont have a twitter and i dont think he checks these forums very often.
This should definitely be possible, since in the video player, the lock/power doesn't lock the screen - it just disables the touch screen - so that touching the screen doesn't do anything like causing the control buttons to appear. This proves that the button itself is programmable based on the app.

wow thats neat i never noticed that! i'm sure its possible we just need somebody with the know-how to implement it. also, i think i mentioned this before, but since on the g1 devs were able to add a reboot option (which btw would be cool if we did that here too) i was thinking there should be a camera option in the menu to launch the camera app. and if we could remove the stupid camera/video disabler when low battery comes on, thatd be awesome too. i'm sure once a custom rom comes along these things could be implemented but we gotta grab a devs attention first.

The camera app does this too.
I'm hoping that someone has picked up on this and that it is in the works, I hope that it's doable.

X1 manual is now online.
At first I was alarmed - no button for switching UI orientation between portrait and landscape! But then I looked a little more and I see you can assign a button to perform that function.
Otherwise reasonably obvious WinMo stuff...
The attached zip needs the file extension to .rar in order to extract it - its the manual for your viewing pleasure.
But then I looked a little more and I see you can assign a button to perform that function.

Oh hooray... You can do the same thing on a Tilt. That's quite disappointing, that a phone of this caliber can't even set something up where you can rotate the screen out of the box, you need to remap one of the buttons to do it.

Exactly, so screen rotation isn't standard, it needs to be customized on a phone that's almost into the triple digits of cost (USD). That's not called customization, that's called pathetic.

Why is this pathetic? They have given you a way to customise a button for this purpose. If you want it, its there, if you don't need it, it doesn't get in your way.
I think you just want to have that dedicated button to justify your purpose. Now THAT is pathetic.
^ so you joined here
now ask yourself, why did Samsung, HTC Apple and even Nokia give accelerometers to their device (which some people even found they're annoying)? why not just a customizable button like you said?
now ask yourself is there any reasonable reason why SE put away the button that was supposed to be screen orientation button?
and the damn on screen keyboard, gosh, I'm speechless...
What is the light sensor for?? Maybe it can act as a function to rotate the screen(like what it did for n82).... but this is not seen in the video demostration.
@nap007, I've been lurking here for some time already, but joined in just to reply to your comment.
Adding a feature as a marketing gimmick is one thing. The accelerometer is not really that useful in its current implementation. I do applaud SE's decision to make the screen rotation customisable to any softkey, as opposed to having a dedicated button of limited use.

The problem as I see it is that the actual button is gone; which button are we supposed to assign our custom request to? Panels? Call end? There are no frigging buttons to assign anything to!

Exactly! There should be a specific key that one could program for this. Customization is good, but a specific button should be there.
In the latest prototype models there was usually a Funciton Key mentioned on the left side of the device. Maybe this manual does not mention that 'cos it was written before that decision or something? It does say "This is a DRAFT publication". Let's hope that this is the case.
As shown in the manual, there are 2 softkeys, labelled as Selection Keys, immediately below the screen, one on the left and other on the right. As far as I can see, these softkeys are not specifically assigned to any particular functions.
One could say that these softkeys could correspond to options show on screen immediately above, but you could just press the options on the screen anyway, so quite redundant in this premise.
Thus, these 2 softkeys can be permanently assigned to function as the screen rotation button, if you so desire. SE may well even default one of these softkeys to be the screen rotation button for production units.
The manual we have now is not yet complete, and we'll have to see the production one to see for sure.
I really don't see what's the problem and fuss here.

YEAH, I am sure I saw a youtube video where the person very clearly puts the finger at the bottom to rotate the screen. At the time I thought if was a touch on the screen, now I believe it was the left soft key.
Yes, that video is of Magnus himself doing a demo for journalists. He did press the left-side softkey to rotate the screen, because someone asked him whether you could rotate the screen without opening the keyboard. Well, there you have it.
Is there someway to set hardkey for taking picture for example volume key up? It would be lot easier to use camera.
good idea!!
I'm curious about this too. Although I use custom ROMs (freyberry), I try to reassign buttons via the settings menu, but NO buttons appear in the list, so can't be reassigned. Odd.
that would be great, hope someone to find a way!
I'd like this too, but don't expect a positive response. If we wanted to assign one hard button to a different one then I could believe that happening. But it's not a button that you want to emulate - it's touch on the screen, and that's a completely different thing. I think it would mean hacking the actual camera app to get what you're asking.
Fingers crossed that I'm wrong
somebody managed to do it on the iphone, so hopefully they can do it on this!

It's a good idea - but I don't really miss a hardware camera button too much. Would love it if the volume keys could be remapped in the camera application to act as zoom in/out instead. The current zoom in/out process is a real pain.

Not such a crazy request - just out on holiday at the moment and as usual I often snap quick shots of my wife and I in front of the major sites - the best way around this is to put the phone in self timer mode. 10 seconds is best i found as it gives enough time allow the camera to autofocus when moving it into position.

Is there a way to configure the optical button on the htc incredible so that clicking it wakes the phone up (like pressing the top button)? I'm looking for functionality thats a little bit similar to how the iphone wakes up since I find that button at the bottom much more accessible than the button on the top.
id be interested in this as well. The top button isnt very intuitive to me
Search the market for "lock screen" or "lockscreen" or just "lock" (or maybe "button"? I thought there was a button switcher app too).
Many of the 3rd party lock apps will bring up the lock screen by pressing one or more of the physical buttons (volume, camera, etc). I bet at least one of them comes on with the optical button.
it has been done on the nexus one with the trackball. i think you need root access or at lease custom rom.
Ok, I found this.

Try the "lockbot" app. It is probably about all that is available right now, but the Incredible will be extremely popular. There will be more hacks/tweaks/apps/whatever for this device than any to date, I suspect.

Are you talking about the app called myLock auto unlock? I am not finding an advanced mode or way to get in advanced mode. Care to explain a little more? and this is able to make it so you can use the trackpad to wake/unlock the phone?
NoLock works for this as well but I wish there was a way to allow the optical pad to work without allowing the volume buttons to work at the same time.
Tried myLock just now and both seem like good apps.

just wondering why you sport the "Big Black" avatar?
And to those who think im being racist by calling him "Big Black", its his name on the Reality TV show with rob dyrdeck.
I am posting the timely reply to my email from the developer of the highly popular No Lock app, that many of us have been using for waking up our Nexus One with the trackball until we installed Gingerbread 2.3.3, for you wizards to possibly lend assistance to the developer . I questioned the developer as to getting a change done to the app so we could again enjoy the wonderful benefit of the app in waking up our phones with the trackball. Perhaps with the great knowledge base of our XDA members we can help him find a path to a fix of this most needed app. (especially those with a non functioning power button) He can be sent an email directly from the No Lock app in the Market. Let us all hope for a breakthru.
Here is his reply:
"Hi!
I wish I could do something. Unfortunately this is not in my hands
Normally my app is supposed to work exactly the same on all the devices,
and all the versions of Android. But in the real world, this is not the
case, and there is really nothing I can do about it.
On certain models, the app doesn't even work at all, and I have no idea why!
Have a nice day"
Trackball wake
I got the same formulaic reply. Obviously this developer isn't interested in fixing it on his own and perhaps we'll have to live with that. Trackball wake doesn't work with stock ROM on Anylock either, so it's a generic problem.
I also hope somebody can fix this (before my Vol key dies!)
The developer of widgetlocker commented on the trackball wake issue. It's something about pressing the trackball no longer dispatch event when the screen is off, therefore there is no way for an app to detect trackball press.

Loving GB - missing my wake on trackball!!
This is a behavior changing issue.
hope someone can make a trackball wake later..
No Lock app would be great to use with GB trackball! Hopefully it's developer will have a fix...in the meantime I'm using No Lock and the Volume button to wake my N1.
Am I missing something about trackball wake? I'm running CM7 nightly #7 and using Widget Locker with the "any hardware button unlock" feature enabled and my trackball wakes my phone just fine (even though I prefer to use the volume keys instead). Our is this an issue on stock 2.3.3?

Yes. It used to be that you could just get an app to add this functionality, but now, you have to change it at the rom level. So sure CM7 will work, but it's over the top for people who just want trackball wake to install a new rom.
Yep, i also asked the widgetlock dev about this issue. Sadly there seems to be no real fix to this.
i really hate the fact that i cannot use trackball wake anymore, especially since the power button of the nexus seems to be quite fragile and can become defect easily. There are many threads about buggy power buttons in this forums.
Workaround for me is also to use the volume buttons for display wake, which is ok, but i preferred trackball wake...
missed my trackball wake..
I normally just use the clock app to prevent my phone from locking. With Gingerbread, I also can't use the trackball to wake the phone anymore. Good thing the volume buttons still work.
Would it be so hard for Google devs to include in stock ROM an option which allowed trackball to wake up screen now that everybody knows how buggy power button is and making a good ROM even closer to perfect?
I know. I'm asking for far too much... Google listening to its customers...

Edite widget locker settings, if i'm not mistaking you can disable hardware buttons unlock
ta, but i already unticked everything i could under buttons and inputs but vol down e.g brings the unlock screen up when it should do nothing
think it's a limitation of android and can't really 'replace' the real lockscreen as such. maybe a version that requires root will do it, who knows.
at the very least this will cause battery rundown.
You are right. I missed your point. I was talking about unlocking. Device wakes up when you press the hardware buttons, but will not unlock with the settings i was talking about.
