Touchscreen without trackball pointer? - Vibrant General

The vibrant looks really good but I'm kind of worried about the lack of any kind of touchpad or trackball.
Does this phone really lack any ability to use mouseover or hover events? What about clicking small links on pages you can't zoom in/out, like google reader?
I'm coming from a G1 and I find myself using the trackball pretty regularly. Am I going to hate losing the fine pointer control, or do they give you some other way of achieving the same effect?

I've rarely everneeded the trackball on any android phone and so far it hasn't been an issue for me. This phone has the most responsive touch screen I've ever used
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant using XDA App

I will say there have been a few times I missed my G1s trackball, but only a few times and I managed without... Just pinch in a bit...

On the G1 the single biggest use of the trackball for me was to move the text cursor around while editing text, and it worked incredibly well. On the Vibrant I constantly find myself tapping around within the text field until I get the cursor after the letter I want to delete so I can backspace it. Some sort of magnifier for accurate cursor control like on the iPhone would be a very welcome addition to Android, since trackballs don't seem to be a mandated feature for devices running the OS.

Swype has adpad... Slide fingers from the S with the I to the symbol key...a dpad will appear....saved me a few times...buddy at ppcgeeks showed me...

Has anyone had good experiences with a capacitive stylus? I got an HTC one for my fiance and it was an absolute piece of crap, so I am hesitant to buy any other capacitive stylus.

You can drag from the S-like swype icon to the SYM icon to bring up on screen movements.
This really is a hidden, but wonderful feature.

THANK YOU!
Super helpful. I have also been missing the trackball of my G1 for text editing. This little D-pad is perfecto.

does dpad work on web pages ?

Yes, but you have to get the softkeyboard to come up of course.

+1, but I will try the Swype method mentioned below.
Not that I have a problem using Swype, but it would be nice to have that option on the other virtual keyboards as well. I like the Samsung keyboard, but it lacks any kind of arrows or cursor movement.

I can't for the life of me get the d pad to come up. All I get is the line but no action... strange.

Wrong there bucko..the Samsung keyboard also has a d-pad. Long press the Number key and the d-pad will show up. Your welcome.

Yup. Missing the track ball. Certainly needs it while editing a mistake. And zooming in to click on the right button is a pain.

There is a way to navigate pls read here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729959

ANNNOYING, 2.1 was not designed to be trackball less... topped with the Copy-pasteless gmail app and the lack of a way to turn off cellular radio and keep bluetooth, android is bleaking out on me.
No matter how many times I hit the correct spot to put the cursor, it just wouldn't get to the point i needed it to... I had to pinch, to the point where I couldn't use the site... landscape fullscreen mode saved me.
I use the anysoftkey dvorak layout.... I hate to say it, but the iPhone4 now comes with it installed by default.
The galaxy S phones should come with a virtual D pad like that of windows mobile, or fix touch cursor pointing across the board.

write sms whit pda keys...is it possible???

Hello, sorry for the incorrect English, but I'm Italian.
I have a proposal for a program for pda-phone, which I think could be very useful to write sms without qwerty or keypad.
To understand better, i use this photo as example:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

}
Is it possible create a program that combines to every direction of the directional pad (usually 8 directions) under the screen, the same function of numbers of mobile keyboards to write with t9??? For example, at direction "up" the letters "abc", at "up-right" the letters "def", at "right letters" the letters "mno" and so on. Then associate to the "central button", the function of 5 (letters "jkl")...
i know that write sms with a small pad isn't simple, but could be easier than with a virtual keyboard on the touchscreen...
Sorry for my bad expression, I hope that I was quite clear and that you can create this program, which does not seem to be complicated ...
Hello and thank
I'd be interested to play around with something like that, it would be great for one handed texting once you memorize which direction contains which letters (might take a while to get fast enough to do it without really thinking), being unable to shoot off a one handed text is probably the only thing i miss about my old phones. (moto Q was amazing for this)

But there is no program to do this?
Otherwise, it is possible that someone of the forum is able to create this program?
I'd be very happy!!!!
p.s.: excuse me, what is "moto Q"???
this is possible, but each key will map 5 chars!
........|.......... abcde

...or you could use like this
Left + up = Space?
Up = ABC
Up + Right = DEF
Right = MNO
Right + Down = WYZX
Down = TUV
Down + Left = PQRS
Left = GHI
Middle = JKL
I copied the layout out of a normal phone keypad. I think that all pocket pc's support diagonal pushes.
Although i think, that it should be possible i doubt, that it would be very comfortable to write a text like that. The Navigate Key is very small, and even if it supports diagonal pushes, it would be most likely, that u'll push the wrong direction very often.
IMHO it would make more sense to use the normal phone dialpad as input. that would give u the opportunity to write onehanded, and it is the inputform we are all used to from phones before. If something like T9 could be intigrated it would be one of the best input forms.

I actually did thought of that. That can be solved pretty much by adding the (iphone keyboard like) "typing register after you lift the finger, not when you push" - method.
Of course this wouldn't be very fun without something like t9 and somekind of Onscreen layout + indicator.
Certainly you are right to say that it is not very comfortable, but can be very useful to write in poor light without watching the screen .... In my opinion it could be useful...logically having 8 directions ... .
Sorry I didn't understand very well the last things you wrote, but with the reference to iphone, you are talking about writing with the keypad or touchscreen?
However, who can i ask to create this program???
Thanks for your interest...
what if it wasn't based on going from the center of the screen... but instead the gesture could be made anywhere, and the gesture only had to be like an inch big, and could be continuous. You could in theory right using up down left right and diagonal strokes, and a stroke could begin where the last one left off. I think with practice this could be a very usable solution.

on some devices this is impossible to press two keys at the same time.

possible better to use another navigation system?
like left arrow - move left in char list, right arrow - move right in char list.
and up/down is fast move in the list.
excuse me, i'm not practical with the English, and i and I couldn't understand what you wanted to say....
however nobody knows a man who can create a program like that???
Excuse me if I may seem irritating, but if it is possible and simple (as you have said) create this program, who should I go to ask for it?
But is this the right section???
up....someone can help me???
Sorry, maybe I'm asking too much, but I do not understand why no one responds to me or give me an answer ... that is, I was told that it should not be difficult to create this program .... why nobody wants to do that? Me it seems useful ....
And there are developers in a position to do so?
I would be very grateful ....
up....please answer me....
I wanted to do this for my Asus P535. I got 9 buttons in front (not including the red and green) and the record button could have been 0.
To do this right, there are 2 ways:
u need a software that reprograms buttons depending on the current running program. These buttons r not normally programmable but AE Button Plus can catch them all. It can't however change their actions depending on the program. Vito Button Mapper 4 can program buttons depending on the program running, but it can only program buttons that are in the normal button settings. I tried using them together (AEB can assign virtual buttons on the button settings as actions for the buttons u can't normally configure) but that didn't work and in most cases would be too much for your phone to handle.
The other option is to create a dialer/txt program that when on top would catch the buttons to do what you wish. I never got around doing that since I don't have time. You can ask someone who already made a dialer/txt to add that function.
It would very cool if this feature would have been added to PocketCM Contacts. That’s the program I use to txt msg and dial. I might ask the creator if he can implement it.
It's exactly what I try to find... I admit that I didn't understand everything you said(I'm Italian), but for me the best thing is the second proposal .... ideal, would ask to a programmatore of those programs, to implement the function we are thinking about...... if you can to ask to the programmator that, i would be very greatful if you explain me the answer.....

[NEW] K's Touch PCM Keyboard Skin & Layout

Here's my PCM Touch Keyboard. The keyboard has HTC Symbol pad's symbols fully integrated into it. By holding down certain keys for 250ms, you'd be able to toggle certain symbols. For example, holding down "a" will show all the "a" accents. Holding down "spacebar" will show common browser shortcuts, and etc etc.
*I don't know why the first picture looks brighter than the others...*
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Holding down the numbers will also toggle some symbols. These are usually symbols that are listed on your ordinary full size keyboard. For example,
1=~, !
[email protected]
3=$ (and various $ signs)
5=%
As you can see, I have also included some ghetto smileys into the mode button tapping the mode button doesn't change anything as there's only 2 modes in this keyboard (caps lock and lower case - double tap shift to toggle between them). However, holding down the mode button will show some commonly used symbols found at the lower portion of a keyboard.
The keyboard is based on the English layout. If you native language is not English, simply change the first two lines of the layout to the layout you commonly use. Everything else should work regardless of the base layout.
Installation is simple, just toss both files into Program Files\PCM Keyboard, select the layout and skin from pcm keyboard option and you are done.
BEFORE INSTALLATION
-open up the layout file with notepad, and replace this line:
symbol_pad=0,)-_+±
There's an extra "-" in the original layout file as seen in picture.

sir.... looks good but couldnt try coz the file is corrupt....
Looks good, but do you still need to update the PCM Keyboard every now and then? Because the PCM Keyboard has "expired date" which is really annoying.
I would rather to pay (even in this beta version) rather than having to visit the site, download, uninstall, reinstall, etc. etc.
I'm not sure if 0.12 still expires....I'm actually rather new to PCM Keyboard...I skinned it because I wanted a better keyboard to be used with my touch style rom...and the touch xt9 keyboard/keypad is a pita.....
Well, I hope you guys like it, you can easily customize the keyboard layout file to show whatever symbols you want when you hold down a key
Wow! wonder ful. I like it...
I like the look. Its my new skin.
Shouldn't it be "http://" instead of "http:\\"?
Also i could never figure out why on the skins they always have the "'" key above the backspace instead of something like the ".". I don't use hte "'" key as much as I do ".". I usually just change it in the layout file myself.
Is it possible to have a button to switch screen orientation?
Jem777
Really nice, i usually use the PhonePad, but with these nice tweaks u've done 2 it i'll 4sure give it a try...
Thanx for a great work
As noted above, the zip file seems to be corrupt. Downloads okay but won't open.
The current version of PCMK, v.12, is set to expire on Jan 15 or thereabouts. So, yes, it still does expire. I agree it is a bit annoying. But the keyboard is generally great with the rigth skin. I prefer the other "refined" one to this. This is complete, but the buttons are too small IMO. Still both are nice. Different strokes for different folks.

You don't have to Unistall, reinstall thingy, just change the date to whatever before 15/Jan-08 and it will work..

These themes have some benefit to use,which are:
- Unique designs.
- Easy to switch labels, among text, number, fx and calculator modes.
- Finger friendly.
- Zoom button preview.
- Pressed state available, so if you disable the Zoom preview you still can see which button you are pressing.
- In text modes, you can find 7 frequently used characters and if you press Shift, there will be 7 additional characters which making total of 14.
- Clear indicators on which modes (text,number,fx,calc) you are in now.
- Complete buttons (including special characters like ü, Ü, etc).
- VGA & QVGA support.
- Portrait & Landscape support.

Would be nice if title states that the skins are for Resco KB pro which is not free.
Also the two skins mentioned so far appear to be fromt he same author, Kie, who is also the contest winner.
The skins look almost identical except the background is slightly different.
quick question: With resco KB Pro, if you type something that is on the bottom of a page, will the KB cover it up or will it automatically shift the page up so you can see what you are typing? If not, is there any KB that will do this (besides the Full Screen Keyboards out there).

I still prefer PCM Keyboard to Resco
PCM is free and I like how PCM allows you to put any pop-up keys from any main key.
The graphics on this resco skin are a little better than my iClone skin for PCM, due to how the skins are configured. Resco allows you to crate a background with the keys and then map the individual key identifiers. Much better than PCM, that you must create a left side, center and right side of the key to create one key.
With my layout you can easily get caps letters without the gesture (press and hold on a letter) and quick punctuation like ". " (period and a space) or .com from pressing and holding the space bar.
I have an iphone and have used it for almost a year and like my pcm skin better with the custom layout. Yes the keys are bigger on the iPhone, but the capacitive screen is almost too sensitive for typing.
Anyway to each their own. Try my skins and you may like PCM better.

I would like to try but there are no VGA one
Thats why I prefer Resco since they have a lot of collection of skin..The pressed button on iKie skin is marvelous..its really looks similar with the iPhone one

Yea sorry... Until the auto-complete bug gets fixed in PCM V14 AND I get a touch diamond or touch pro I don't want to spend the time on a VGA version.
I have tried pocketcm on my device but its too slow I dun know why..I just not used to it maybe but resco keyboard pro is quite fast..and also touchpal

Keyboard in browser + landscape mode = problem

Hi,
I'm almost in love with my GSII despite the fact that the keyboard is taking too much place on the screen when I'm writing a SMS or a simple message...
I encounter a "serious" problem with my GSII when I was writing an answer in a forum, I couldn't see what I was writing, there was no focus on the written line :
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
At this time the copy-paste and the pinch to zoom are becoming inaccurate, if I want to re-focus in the good area, as soon as I tap another word, the screen moves down automatically :
Same problem in Dophin HD or whatever keyboard installed.
Very... very annoying.
Did you noticed this too ?
Thanx
Up please. I need to know if the problem is software or...
I have to say I find this very, very annoying as well. It's not super terrible in the stock browser, but I'm using Firefox and I can't even see the text window. Also, I'm getting weird behavior in Firefox. At least in the xda forums, nothing gets inserted into the text box as I type. Gonna try a restart to see if that helps. In my screenshot, I've got XT9 on. With it off it's only marginally better.
Tanx.
Yeah the notification tab is too big. If you can't see what you are writing in a such big screen, what's the point??? Samsung screwed up big time on this, never had that problem with other Android phones.
Hope they release a fix for this quickly or maybe the new firmwares already solve the problem but I'm waiting for official ones.
Probably my major annoyance with the phone. Often you have to guess what you're typing because as soon as you start typing the text goes up out of sight in some places like forums and such.

Did you get the latest firmwares ?
Well, slightly annoying, but when typing (forums, logins, etc.) I hold it in portrait mode ...............
Yeah you right, but I randomly encounter the same problem in portrait mode... Plus in this mode, it becomes more difficult, for me, to read cause I have a bad sight.
We clearly have a super-phone here but problems like this shouldn't exist
I noticed this too, and I use Dolphin HD.
Very very annoying
Text editing in Android is just bad overall... needs to be fixed
It seems that we are only a few to be really annoyed by this problem... up !
I'm glad I'm used to typing in portrait mode. Landscape makes me slower, actually. I got in luck with this one..
Receiving my SGS2 this afternoon! (finally.. wasn't home on friday)
Up people ! Feedback needed !
My biggest annoyance with the keyboard is that the spacebar is too short, I keep hitting the full stop, which is a pain in the arse!!
Loving swype though.
Try HTC_IME_hi22 it will let you type and see where you are typing and doesn't take up as much room as the stock keyboard, plus, it has lots of settings to personalise it, I think you will like it.
Why don't you use preinstalled Swype Keyboard?
Use smartkeyboard from market. Its the first thing I install in any phone.
I'm already using smartkeyboard but keyboard isn't the real problem I think.
I use Swiftkey, and yes this problem is very annoying. What's worse though is I find tapping your sentence to place the cursor at a specific point utterly hit and miss. It's really, really hard to get it where you want it.
This might just be a problem with the forum I use the most (whirlpool), but it's bloody annoying.
I have to say, the iPhone is way ahead when it comes to placing the cursor where you want it. I'm hanging for a mod that uses the little magnifying glass thing that the iPhone has.

As the OP said, download smart keyboard
It lets you customize the keyboard however you'd like (well, almost)
In your case, you can make the spacebar bigger
