Ok, I've done this several times now. I flashed back from Kaos Froyo to Aloysius Snow, and my trackball issue goes away. Albeit my phone is fully charged, and I will get the issue sometimes (not all the time) when I plug my phone in to charge while running snow. It's not a complete cure, but my phone will work fine for several days at a time now (using power manager, and set cpu to save battery).
For the record, here's what I did:
-Charged battery full while on whatever Rom you are using (besides Snow).
-Unplug and turn phone off for about 10 mins.
-Flashed Snow.
This work for anyone else?
what does your trackball do when it's not working correctl? I've been trying to solve this problem (if I cant help with software might as well try with hardware lol).
most of the problems with the trackball are actually physical problems with it, but there is a fix that I posted a video of a while ago.

its related to your USB port on the phone being shifted around while plugged in. If you play with the cable while its plugged in youll notice that it cuts in and out at certain angles. its not dirty, well it might be dirty but thats not what makes it stop working. and its definately not software.
What ^ He said. There are some "fixes" for the trackball like rubbing it on a piece of paper or cleaning it with a cuetip + rubbing alcohol but those are only for trackball issues related to the trackball and not the magnetic sensors. The usb port is right next to the magnetic sensors and of course an electric charge is going to screw with them. It wasn't very smart of them...
I tried this cure out of curiosity, sadly it didn't help.
Most trackball issues are hardware related. I made a other thread about mine the other day. I even pulled my phone apart and cleaned the trackball, rollers and sensors with rubbing alcohol and that didn't help. Only thing that helps is pulling up on the USB adapter when its plugged in. BTW mine doesn't work regardless of if its plugged in or not

i have to actually push the usb cord up from the bottom while i use the trackball or it won't work.

Trackball woes...
I think the trackball issue is a little different for everyone. Mine pulls to the left, occasionally the system freezes, and the SMS/MMS acts screwey. For whatever reason, my "trick" works for my phone. If I just go get a power mat and never plug the USB in, my phone should be good.

i second the powermat idea im going to get a refurb and see about a powermat so it doesn't happen again. but down side is i wonder if they are coming with that new update? and i wonder if its possible to attain root?
The update will only temporarily remove root.

My girl gave me a cingular 8525 today, it had come into her work and I am trying to fix it. I am a hardcore wizard user so i am very familiar with HTC, cooking and whatnot, but my 1st problem is I cant turn this thing on. The battery may be very dead, or the phone may be broken. All I have is my mini USB plug which doesnt seem to be compatible with the new phone. The hermes is squared off a little. I can get a little red light if I move the USB plug around a little. 1st thing, I have to turn this on, I have had my wizards battery be completely out of juice and I had to jumpstart sort of speak, so I was about to get on that with the hermes battery, but Im still unsure if my existing mini USB stuff will plug in with the hermes' slightly different sized plug. Anyone know? or if its just as simple as buying a new plug.
How many thread are you going to start on this issue? geez slow down a bit and you will get some help, but first start reading .
btw have you even thought about doing a battery swap huh? or maybe using the right plug since you know its not the right one...i
bam. update, hermes is on, jumpstart solved the issue... no backlight though. checked backlight settings and they were up all the way... ideas?
After unlocking and flashing to farias rom and still no backlight, I think its safe to assume that the problem is in the hardware. anyone know how to replace the LCD screen or where I can get one?
whoa crazy another update: I left the phone alone to charge, battery is at 60% and screen just came on everything looks peachy! I am noticing it dimming and getting brighter occasionally though.
The phone is acting very strange, still unsure if its the hardware thats acting up. it went back to not working, the screen was lit up just once for maybe 20 seconds, noticed that the keyboard backlighting does not work either, but for that 20 seconds when the screen backlight was on, that was as well. Starting to think that there may be a loose connection somewhere inside the phone, or the light sensor is somehow not working and screwing it up. If the screen lit up once, then to me that means the backlight is not burned out. If anyone has any ideas, please please let me know. I know its a weird and uncommon problem but someone may have gone through it. Thanks again.
It is probable that the internal connectors are loose and or battery connections.
Really, all the information you need is already posted several times over. So use the search. But as a starter for dismantling and the service manual see the website in my signature.
You will need some skill in dismantling and a fair bit of care and patience or you will end up with something in worse condition than now!

interesting update for those who dont care, it appears that I have a very sensitive light sensor, after downloading the official wm6 from at&t my keyboard now lights up in the dark, before nothing lit up, just the dial and end buttons... I wonder if it could be the software or something in the registry thats not clearing being the reason why I still have no backlight... but last night it came on for about 10 minutes afer me not touching it at all... strange little device. oh well, if theres any ideas id love to be able to replace my wizard with this...

The chargers are the same plug. The 8525 plug is squared off for the headset. They dont want you to plug your hermes headset into your wizard
My HTC Magic is acting very weird. It started when i had it in my pocket when it was raining. So i tried to use the phone it didn't respond when i tapped the phone. It's just odd that when i turn off the phone and boot it up some hours later, it works. But only for a couple of minutes, then it's not responding again.
One time i was playing teeter and suddently the G-sensor didn't work. The ball didn't roll and the touchscreen didn't work either.
Also, sometimes the charging led does not respond when i charge the phone.
The trackball switches between not responding roll and not responding to being pressed. Sometimes both things work, sometimes they don't.
The phone has been exposed to water before, about 3 weeks ago, but back then i used a hairdryer and it was good to go after that.
Here is what i have tried so far:
Opened the phone and cleaned the screen.
Made sure that the cables were plugged in.
Installed the stock rom from HTC.
Used a hairdryer.
None of these things had any effect
Could somebody please tell me whats wrong with it.
Check the other boards in the phone for water damage and clean. Hope it'll help.

Right now i have put the phone into a bowl with rice. I've heard that it might help removing the moisture. If it doesn't work, i'll try your method.
Hello,
I've been having touch screen issues lately, since i rooted and switched to CM 6.1 a couple of weeks ago. The screen will work perfectly for a little while, but will inevitably stop responding. I'm using launcherpro, though i don't believe that's the issue- it happens regardless of which launcher I'm running (I've tried others and experienced the same issue. The optical scroll pad will still "sort of" work- better than the screen (which will respond to the occasional touch after the problem begins, but barely does). If I reboot, the problem will usually go away for a while again, but will recur. I wind up needing to fix the issue once or twice a day. I don't think it's a hardware problem because the reset fixes it, so I assume it is then software. Also, i don't remember having this problem with the stock rom. Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
Dunno how useful this will be, but have you tried reflashing CM?

Same problem here. But I've noticed sometimes if I'm using the phone not in my hand (on car dock or just on table) this problem seems to happen more...but when I hold it in my palm then works fine.
But sometimes it just becomes unresponsive. Am running virtous's rom on my g2. But I can remember having the same issue when running cm on my g1 days too. Reboot always fixed it, just gets annoying.
Anyone have fixes to this? Thanks!!

I personally use GV 7 or sparksmod and. Never had a problem, these are the best roms I think for this phone.

Been having this exact problem for weeks now. And I believe it is a hardware problem, probably some sort of short in one of the ribbon cables or the digitizer itself. Occasionally, actually 85% of the time I'd try to open an apparently and the phone would act if I held my finger down and then the apparently icon gets selected...very annoying cus it happens over and over a couple times, all I can do is keep trying until it does what its supposed to. Also with the on screen keyboard when I'm texting it'll act like I'm holding down on one of the letters and keeps bringing up the special characters to that letter...or ill tap delete to delete a spelling error and it'll end up holding it down and deleting my whole damn text and I can't stop it.
At first when this first started happening I could simply tap the screen and it would stop the crap it was doing and work fine. As time went on I noticed I kept having to hit it harder and harder for it to correct it. Wellllll guess what? Last night it was acting up horribly and I slammed my closed hand against it while it was on the desk and it cracked the LCD screen and now the phone is completely useless, even though the outer touchscreen is perfectly fine.
The restarting of the phone also usually fixed it for me as well but only for a few minutes.. which also makes me think its a short because after the phone is turned off whatever part is shorting out, that circuit is closed and just takes time until you press on the screen in whatever spot to cause the two parts to touch and create the short all over again.
Anyways that's my story...just don't get angry and slam down on the screen lol. This is my 2nd G2 and I'm tired of it, probably just going to get a nexus s or just go back to the nexus one, atleast it was reliable.

if you open the battery cover u can see that there are connectors that closes the whole circuit, so when u are holding the phone the back cover works like a grounding area that makes the screen responce to your touch. Acapacitive screen works like this: when you touch in any area on the screen, you simply are breaking the electrical field that the screen has, the screen "feels" where u break it and tells the operating system.
the electrical field depends on the human body a bit to make the circuit complete, so when u touch the metal parts of the phone, the screen works like it is designed.
I have a Samsung Vibrant T959 TMobile US with 2.1-update1, Baseband T959UVJI6.
The battery is fully charged, it registers in the phone as fully charged 100%, but when I hit the power button I get a progess wheel that gets stuck, then the phone just turns off. It never gets passed that wheel, it only displays for a second then dies.
However, when I plug in the USB and hit the power button, it comes right up like it should. Then I can unplug the usb and use the phone just fine. Its almost as if I need to jump-start the phone with a power source.
I have reset the phone, even re-flashed the stock firmware using Odin. Same results. I have even swapped batteries with a buddy just to see if that was the case, but I still got the same results.
Any advice or suggestions is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks Very Much In Advance!
Anybody? Any ideas?
Well, that is new to me...
I'll preface with, I have no clue how/why that is happening. But, this is what I would do:
1 - If really opposed to rooting, I'd call T-Mo / Samsung and get a replacement.
2 - If I liked my phone and wanted to make it better, I'd root it and flash a custom ROM. It likely would take care of the issue, as it clearly is not a hardware thing (well, I say clearly).
Worst case with #2, ODIN back to stock and then do option 1.
possible solution
also it says "USB connected" even when cable is unplugged? I had similar problem.. I tried everything, flashing, changing batteries.. none of that was useful. Then I find some post on some forum that says it might be corrosion, so i scratched my USB with thin wire and everything worked fine, but also scratching USB I was doing one more thing. In my opinion, I think that it's not corrosion. I think that USB is slightly bent (middle part of it), try to bent it in other direction, possible that it's too close to edge. That solved my problem. Tell me if this helpful for you, sorry about my english

i think i can get what you are saying, cleaning the usb port on the phone right??
BUT how does this affect turning the phone on?? if usb port is rusty, it will only affect charging, not turning the power on?
I experienced this identical issue last fall -- the USB would always say it was connected, wouldn't startup unless connected to actual USB, but otherwise worked fine.
Take your phone apart and look at the solder joints on your microUSB port... mine all had cracks in them or had broken free. I re-flowed the solder while holding the port down and it resolved my issues. (put on some flux, and run a hot soldering iron across the joints, clean up... it's not very difficult. just be sure you don't short out any of the pins.) I also added additional solder to the four points that just hold the mircoUSB to the circuit board. It's been rock solid since

See if there is a TV or electronic repair place still in business in your area. Or post an ad on CL asking someone with knowledge and skill to do it. Be careful they aren't an idiot just wanting 20 bucks and happen to own a soldering iron.

you could see if Cell Phone Repair/ is near you and describe to them what you want to do.
I would go through these guys they are top notch helped me when i soft bricked my wife's phone. He even convinced me that i could fix it myself when i was ready to send it to them for a jtag.
They can replace the usb plug if thats the issue.

I would test to see if my battery is bad first before i went about resoldering, it could easily be a bad battery.

Hello guys, my touchscreen going crazy whenever I'm charging the phone.
Doesn't receive input half of the time. No matter which charger / rom / kernel I try with, problem still there.
The weird thing is, it doesn't happens whenever I'm in TWRP.
Anybody knows the problem? making me charge the phone only at night...

I'm betting that your digitizer is going bad - mine did similar things, then parts of the touch screen stopped responding - had to reset the touch screen several times (cat /sys/devices/virtual/input/lge_touch/f54 seemed to work for some duration of time). I eventually (as of yesterday) replaced the LCD/digitizer and it now works correctly (apart from the fact that I screwed up the new screen, that is).
I would try to open back cover and attach digitizer connector cable properly (next to Jack connector). This worked for me, when I had same problem

Ive attached the image. on the black shield, i added extra tape to hold digitizer connector in place. Firstly make sure that connector is pressed in place properly.
I also glued down the left end of mainboard, so it couldnt wiggle anymore. Hope this helps... Id did for me!
