There have been quite a few postings here on people having problems charging their XDA with thrird-party chargers originally built for the XDA I.
Add me to the list I"m on the road and can't get the damned thing charged using the charger.
However the good news is, that the problem is not the cable (or the connector for that matter). Right now I'm in the internet cafe using the USB-connection to charge the XDA II at least a little. THis is working!!
My third-partz charger is a power supply with a USB-socket, that connects with this charge-sync cable. But, its not working! This leaves two possibilities:
1) The power supply is providing a lower voltage than the XDA II requires (something less than 5.0 Volts, mazbe 4.7?). I can't check this here, but if someone with a similar problem could measure his charger voltage using a multimeter, we might find an answer. Pins to check on this site under "connector".
If this is the cause, it won't help me here, but at least we'll have the problem solved.
2) I noticed in my charger, that the USB/pins 2 and 3 ( Data-H and Data-L) are unconnected. Potentially the XDA II has an issue if these lines are floating whilst power is applied to the USB-bus. I don't know if we can check this easilz,bu if someone has an Idea?

I'm using a nokia charger, and the supplied adapter and it seesm to work fine.
MDA/XDA II Pinout - Charge Issue Resolved!!
Being back from my vacation, I immediately got into figuring out why my third party charger was not working, though the MDA II would charge through the same cable when connected to the USB-bus of a PC.
It was a wiring error in the USB-cable after all!
To figure it out I took that little adapter that comes with the original charger apart. Though the MDA/XDA II has the same pinout as the MDA/XDA I, there is a major difference in that not all GND pins are connected together inside. In order to charge, at least one of Pins 16,17,18 must be connected to ground. The grounds on pins 2 and 5 are not connected to the internal charge circuit. TO make things worse, the MDA/XDA detects an external charge power source when pin 2 is GND and Pin 22 is +5V - so the light goes on, but it still does not charge.
On my cable the USB-shield was connected to pin 18. When connected to a PC, the shield was connected at that end to Ground and all went well. On my charger supply, the shield was not connected, so it couldn't charge.
I just rewired the connector and see there it works!
So, if you have the same problem, and are handy at the soldering iron, there is a solution! For those making/selling those USB charge/sync cables, get it right the first time!
Is it safe using a Nokia Charger ?
My Nokia travel charger is rated at 6.2 V, not 5.0 as the one supplied with the XDA II

Yeah! But watch out anyway because the volatge is not the only thing to check before charging a device. The right voltage but a bad amperage can cause lots of damage...
Using the Brando USB charger woukd actually DRAIN the battery when the bar reaches yellow....
Using a Nokia charger
The Nokia is rated at 6.2 V 720 mA, the original charger is 5V 1 A.
If I understand my physics right, the XDA may draw more current that the charger can handle, so AMP vise, the danger is on the charger ?
Not that I belive that the XDA would really pull 1A, but you never know.
It would be really nice to have just one charger in the travel bag..

Suggest a USB Charger and source.
Can anyone suggest a usb charger cable and source in the UK for an O2 XDA 2 as the one that I have currently does not charge at all despite the light saying so.

What I am really after is to find out if there is a place to find a USB cable that will work right out of the box/dodgy package that it comes in. I am not good with soldering irons or electronics and would like to buy one that is wired up correctly to charge my XDA II.

Since AT&T no longer supports the Tilt i can't buy an original car charger from them anymore. The one i have no longer works, and from what i've gathered across the intarwebz is that unless you have a factory original car charger or l33t soldering skills, you don't get to have a car charger anymore. Is this right?
Since i don't own a soldering gun, is there a car charger that will work guaranteed? I checked HTC's site and it looks like they are just selling cheap aftermarket generic car chargers.
ANy help would be appreciated.

I am using a car charger from a Blackberry. If fact, my wall chrager is also from Blackberry. Had them left over from the old days.
Never have any problems.

I have one of these, it's a genuine one and charges as well as a wall charger.
My mini USB connector is knackered after I tried to re-set my phone by jamming the stylus in it, so now I have to wiggle it to get it to charge.
Any mini usb charger will work. depending on the volts it may take longer to charge. I sell them all day at Radio Shack and use it for my tilt. just a generic one will do
Don't go cheap on these -- I had a cheap one that fried a device.

Im lucky i have a USB port on my stereo and i just use a standard mini usb cable to charge my phone, otherwise i use any motorola USB charger and i have nvr had a problem with any of those.
There are threads around about car chargers for Kaiser - search is always good. The general opinion seems to be that non HTC chargers can be unreliable. I've tried a few that sometimes charged and sometimes didn't. Often they would charge for a few mnutes then stop. Rarely seem to charge with GPS running, they just don't seem able to supply the power needed. However I bought a 'genuine' HTC charger from ebay and it's been working great for months. They're still available for aound $AUS20. I think it's worth trying to find one that states 1 amp output from memory. In fact, think I'll buy another now just in case they disappear! Can't remember exactly who it came from though.

Yup yup. Go HTC if you want reliability. I had a 'Tesco Value' one that showed it was charging but I could never work out why my battery was dying. I found an app that logs the mA charge or discharge rate and that told it's own story; when the Kaiser is working hard - GPS, bluetooth and a couple of apps running it can be pulling well over 500mA. Spend the money, it's worth it.
I got a phillips car charger from Asda for £5. Has tips for most types of phone including mini-usb. Charges my kaiser fine.

I always answer the same when I see this kind of demand: buy the official HTC one, it cost something like 10 euros in the EU (probably 10-15 $), and you'll have no problem (see a previous post here).
I had a cheap one, it was a no-go. ince then it's perfect.

Agreed. The official charger has worked very well for me. Got mine here. Mailed same day and Priority Mail. Have ordered a number of things from them and highly recommend.

I bought a generic one off of Amazon and that worked for about 3 days and then it stopped charging as well. I hope that i can find a solid alternative.

Apologies if my comment sounded rude, it was simply meant to alert you to the fact that there are many threads on this topic that may help and you didn't mention that you have searched already. I know the search function on these large boards is less than efficient and can be frustrating. It's a good idea to mention that you've searched as many people don't bother. Personally I only reply to questions if I think I can help and because I've had so much help from others, not because I have nothing better to do.
all i have to say is, i'm SURE theres a charging circuit built in that will not allow it to charge at too high of a rate in mA's, the OEM one is fairly high (like 850 or 1a as some have said) although i've had fine luck using pretty much anything, i use a mini-usb cable attached to a computer to charge most of the time, the USB standard will allow a max of 500mAh, so it takes longer, but whatever, i have also used Mot. V3 chargers for a long time with fine luck, really the only one i have that doesnt work is my bluetooth headset charger, and its mini-usb but its rated for an output of 350mA!
I had similar problems with my Kaiser. For almost a year it would charge with car charger then it stopped. It would charge fine on AC and computer USB but not in the car.
If you look inside the USB port on the phone at the bottom are two little tabs/fingers. They need to be lifted up to make contact with the charger. I took a dental tool and slightly lifted them so they make better contact with charger plug.
Also make sure that the plastic inside the usb on the phone is not curved or bent as some of the pins will then not touch then. I straightend out the plastic tab inside the USB with a small screwdriver and then made sure that the little grounding legs were bent up a bit and bingo it works.
I use a Motorola charger as well in the car and it worked fine for Blackberry and other phones I checked so I knew the issue was in the phone.
Buying a new charger may not solve the problem if its in the phone. Thanks to those who posted their findings as after I searched I was able to peice together a few ideas that worked.
go to ur local office supply and get one of those cigarette usb chargers (mine is for an HP Ipaq I used to have) and use your data cable ... it works fine

I believe that we should demand a recall from HTC of their junky chargers. As of a couple days ago, my charger stopped working. In order to get it to charge my phone, I need to unplug and plug in my phone 20-40 times and get the physics of the connection PERFECT... if my phone moves 1mm, it will stop charging, so I need to have the phone somewhere that it will not move...
This is not the case with my Car Charger, so I know it is simply the phone charger itself that comes with HTC... they supplied us with $0.10 charger cables to save money, and we should demand a higher quality cable be supplied to us after buying their "Flagship Device"

Yes. My charging/USB cable has gotten loose. The Radio Shack one I bought with the phone works great. I doubt a cable recall will occur, however.

Apple did something similar, so this might work.
I had an iphone, and got a notice that I needed to get a new wall plug due to defects in the ones that were released with the iPhone. So my new wall plug had a bright green dot on it to indicate it was new.
HTC could do something similar, couldn't they?
Wait, are you complaining about the charger plug or the USB cable? Replacement cables are, like, a nickel on EBay. Or you can get an adapter and use your old micro USB cables.
If it's the charger itself, you may get some sympathy from OEMs, but I wouldn't even waste the stamp (or email) for a cable. Just my opinion, of course.

It's weird. I also have charging issues, here they are:
1. Occasionally, after charging for a period of time on the home charger, the EVO will light up and stop charging. I check the battery info and temperature is in the 20s, so i know that it's not a temperature issue. Then, after about 30 seconds or a minute, it will light up again and continue charging. I never touch the charging cable or connection and it does it on its own.
2. Using the car charger, the EVO seemingly decides that it doesn't like the connection. When i plug in the charger, the EVO will begin to charge, then after two or three seconds, go back to discharge mode. It takes me pulling the plug and reinserting (into the cig lighter port, not the EVO) anywhere from 3-100 times to get it to accept the charge demand.

Exactly what I have. My wife and I can share one plug, she with her Hero and me with my Evo.
I don't even use the OEM one, I use my Treo Pro chargers and have not ran into an issue. The OEM just sits on my desk...I have had my EVO since launch date.
Treo pro OEM chargers are fairly cheap now.
Just my 2 cents.

Then pins that hold the cable get pushed in when this happens you dont get a good connection. I have seen a few come in to my shop. usually give them a cable I have laying around. Leads me to wonder what others are doing differently. I havent had any issues with either of my chargers and I will test and play games with it plugged up so I know I put a little stress on it.

The physics of my connection are perfectly fine.
It's not the charger it's the port. There was a bad batch and it was fixed. Mine had the same issue and I couldn't charge my phone.
I've already apologized for coming off an iphone, but these little things are mounting and I feel the need to share. The input of this cable is a constant struggle. I find myself trying 3 and 4 times to actually get it in the bottom of the phone, and then.....nothing happens. At least the iphone jack had a press in on the side to get it in and out. So no charge, or it shows it charging and 5 mins. later nothing again. So that's coming from the outlet, but if I plug it in my pc it goes crazy with the sounds and asks what i want to do. So, you think ok some loose pins on either end? NO! I've checked and both ends look secure and neither simulate the problem when shaken or tugged or moved around. I have read all about soldering, but I am not able to do that yet, and with no ability to buy new wires in the US I am living on a dying charge. Are these wires so tempermental for everyone?
Ive had no issues charging but I know how you feel about getting the charger in in the first place, takes a couple of goes thats for sure!

It's official!!!
After the whole day of wiggling and changing connection from usb to wall and even car usb the phone said battery error. Either your charger of battery is malfunctioning. Please check immediately. So the battery registered full, but then said 89% and then only 81%. I'm hoping to get a new charger and battery when the dell USA comes online.
I have 2 cables. 1 works correctly but the other charges when it feels like it. I have a support request in with Dell have yet to hear anything. The sooner cheaper 3rd party cables become available the better as I would keep more spares then.
that sucks. I've been considering the streak, well really wanted it and now that they've finally announced it, not sure i want it anymore cuz of its proprietary port. Why couldn't they have just used micro or mini USB like everybody else?
Everyone's house i go to has a micro/mini usb cable laying around so i never have to take a charger with me anywhere. And since my past 3 phones all used micro or mini usb, i have a bunch of those cables and chargers all over my house. Now with this crap i'm gonna have to buy several cables, 1 for the office, living room, car, etc. that is if i do get the device.
Since I have gotten the Epic I have had so many issues with windows seeing the phone and installing the proper drivers even right after restarting the phone. Im lucky if windows see's the phone one out of 10 times I have to plug unplug etc etc until my pc's see the darn phone.
So I caught a post earlier that suggested to try a different cable and BAMM!!! phone links every single time no issues. Im using the usb cable that came with my evo now. Just side by side you can see the huge quality difference.
Samsung might want to check these cables and I suggest if your having charging or communication problems with the phone to try a new cable.
Let me know if any of you are also able to reproduce this!!
Yes. My cable actually broke the 2nd day of owning this phone because it was tugged on a little too hard while i was using my phone with it charging. It wouldn't charge the phone unless it was being pushed upwards or held a certain way.

I've since been using my girl's MyTouch 3g cable and have had no issues whatsoever.
I just purchased a few new cables from monoprice. I've always had awesome results from them and they are cheap.
Yes the cable that comes with the epic should not be used with a computer IMO. Just look at the charger that plugs into the wall and compare it to the USB pins on your computers case.
The pins are raised a lot higher on the part that plugs into the wall compaired to how raised the pins are on my PC's case. I'm running an antec 1200 and I would consider the front USB ports to be really "tight". I then tried a different cable and have had no problems.......OTHER THAN BATTERY LIFE IN GENERAL sucks on the epic.

e computer side but I have been using my I mac since my pc took a dump b. i think the phone end of the usb cable is just crap.it seems to disconnect really easy and not near as robust as the one that came with my hero. Still love my epic though!

Come on. Both the cable and the wall unit sucks. A phone that is 500 bucks and you give me a .7 amp charger and a cheap ass cable? My HTC touch pro came with a 1 amp charger, that looked nice, and came with a good cable.

Right? Well at least we got 16g sd cards. They have to give and take you know? lol
my cord works just fine.
However i only have one mini usb (the one that came with it) so i ordered some micro usb to mini usb adapters so i can use all my old cables.
Just order a bunch of microUSB cables from monoprice. It's like $1.20/cable. I ordered 7 so I have a large collection of easily lost cables.
