Battery heats up...

I just had a couple of longish calls in a short period. Both averaged about 30 minutes or so.
The phone is HOT. It is hot on the screen and battery side. This is not the first time the phone as started to get warm after long use.
This has never happened on my Raphael. I had it happen the other day while I was using the GPS a lot too. This seems like a very bad thing to me as heat will destroy the battery and possibly chips.

But this isn't 'warm' like I would expect from a battery...this feels hot, like when I tell someone not to put laptop on their lap because blocks vents...and then have them put hand on their laptop. That kind of hot.

Install System info widget and check the temperature of your battery, should be at 98F - 106F

I've had mine get too hot a few times. I'm assuming that's what this means, but when the phone is hot, I see the led indicator light alternate flash between green and Orange. I've taken out the battery and let it cool down and then everything was normal again. I'm beginning to agree with other people that I don't like this phone. I never had this problem, or any problem, with my Samsung moment. If this crap continues with this phone, I am giving the Samsung epic some serious thought. People have ranted and raved HTC phones. The Evo being my first one, I'm not very impressed with it once I played with it for awhile. Yeah, the specs looked impressive on paper but in real life, I don't care too much for it. I guess I will wait and see what happens.

Any idea why the phone would get warm when screen is off and you have no background apps running? I get this at work amd im sure its not caused by signal searching Im outside all night

My phone shut down from heat today.
I got into my car, turned on gps and bluetooth, put the phone into the mount, and started navigation. Sure enough, the thing shut down in about a min. The car and the mount were kinda hot too.
I had to take off the silicone case and point 1 air vent at the phone, to get the temperature to a pretty cool 31C (with charging at the same time).
On its own, I haven't seen the battery heat up, especially when the screen is off.
Perhaps that batter is defective, or you have a rogue process that's running the battery down.
How fast does your battery drain when it heats up, and normally?
The normal speed for draining the battery with the screen off is about 1% per 1 hour.

Covers, cases, holsters, in your pocket, being in a hot car (even not in direct sunlight), etc. Pretty much anything that can keep the heat from escaping the phone or add to the phone's temperature.
I hope cyanogen can be a miracle maker with the custom rom he's making, because this phone's quirks are getting on my nerves. Yeah, it's past the 30 day return deadline.

Which other phone can run 1Ghz processors and not overheat under full load and inside a case?
I think common sense tells me I should have expected that.

I get pretty good battery life from my evo. 20 hours of moderate/high usage took me to 30-40% but I work in a pretty well air-conditioned ambulance and drive around with my phone in my lap most of the time or in my pocket on occasion and when I pick it up sometimes the screen and back cover are warm. I look at battery temp and its like 32-36 degree celsius idling like that

After a couple hectic days of ebook reading and killing my battery my phone was getting hot like really randomly and when I had the screen on for like 10 mins or more, or when I charged it or pretty much if I even looked at it wrong! On a side note I have it in the body glove case from Sprint. Also my battery life was horrible. I was going down to like 30% in like 7 hour of practically no use.
Now I was running completely stock and unrooted( I hadn't felt the need to root yet) My solution was I rooted, installed DC rom then and I believe this is what fixed it cleared my battery stats from the recovery menu. Bam my phone hasn't even gotten warm since. Also it's been a week since I did this, and I'm getting crazy battery life now( like I'm down to 70-80% in 7 hours now with light use)

I think the battery life is one of the few flaws in this design. I think the battery life wont even be much more then a normal psp. So probably 3-4 hours of non-stop gaming will kill it. That would be a reason for me not to buy this devise.

It's quoted at 5 and a half hours of gaming time.
I had two units on demo 9-5 on Sunday, they were on 9 and 11% be the end, they didn't get any proper recharging, just being topped up a minute or two if there was a gap in people coming to play on them, otherwise they were in use nearly all the time.
So it seems pretty good.

I get around 5 hours of gaming, good enough for me!

my r800x i rooted it and took off all the verizon bloatware and random crap that was running im at 210 free of 300 whatever on the rom side and ive only used 100 mb of the internal memory
only thing i have is snes and n64 emulators and FPse the other day i did about 3 hrs of gaming it was at 100 percent when i started and after 3 hours of gaming i had 75 percent i was playing ff7 and goldeneye
i had wifi off bt off sync off and medium screen brightness only thing i turn on is the sync but i dont need it all the time
i ordered some batterys off of ebay lol i have a bad habit of getting drunk and getting on ebay lol
they should be here today see what happens it suppose to be 2 oem spec suppose to be oem spec but i shouldve known better and the wall plug you just sit the battery in there

1h play, ~20% battery cost with the lights on the powerful setting.
So I confirm, it's around 5 hours of uninterrupted gameplay.

5 hours of gaming might not seem like a lot on paper, but trust me, it's more than enough.
I think people need to remember that this is a phone first, gaming handheld second. For the majority of people, 90% of the day is not going to be spent gaming for continuous hours. I know for me, personally, I play Ocarina of Time on my breaks at work. A typical day for me has me going to work at about 9:10AM, phone's at near 100%. I'll use some WiFi here and there, sparingly throughout the day, and get about 45 mins to an hour of solid gaming in. At 6PM when I'm heading home, phone's anywhere from 70-80%, maybe less if I've been using data slightly more that day. Keep in mind, this is with sending probably 50ish texts throughout the day.
So I get home, I'll usually play for another hour or so more depending on what I'm doing. All in all, when I'm getting ready to go to sleep, my phone's usually at around 65%.
That is absolutely amazing battery life. Any time that I plan on gaming for more than 3 hours straight I make sure I've got an outlet nearby just in case - I carry my charger on my at all times (in a backpack/car/etc) like any reasonable person probably does.
TL;DR - best battery life I've ever seen on a phone that does what the Play does.

5 hours of gaming is what I get, and trust me I've never killed the battery during a normal day. The only time I actually kill it is when sitting at home, and at those times I'm near the charger anyway.
This phone has by far the best battery life of any smartphone I've used.

I agree that the Play's battery life is quite good, but I really have to say that it's not good enough when coupled with 3G usage. I have 3G on all the time, and usually if my day starts at 10am, (with occasional gaming) the Play will die at about 9pm with moderate gaming. That's really quite good, but I usually am not home at 9pm, so it sucks to have the battery go flat just when you are about to start boarding your bus back home.
I wish it could've been a little longer.

Here are a few things about the plays battery life.....
5.5 hours of gaming is really intense and I realistically wouldn't expect many people to actually play games for the whole 5 hours unless they were at home which in that case they will have their charger for the device.
Regarding the phone using 3G, the device will only chew up power if its constantly looking for 3G signal. If the device has a strong constant signal of 3G, it wont eat the battery as much at all.
Regarding rooting the phone to increase its battery life, ive heard and seen that it does actually improve the phones battery life but only slightly. I dont have mine rooted and thats alright by me
Lastly, my experiences with the xperia play's battery have been fantastic. Im getting 2-3 days usage with calls, texts and short gaming sessions.

That, and I'm not sure whether the case I'm using (TPU) supports the extended battery's size.
I'm not even sure whether there are white covers for extended battery covers.. And I live in Asia so shipping from the US is going to painful.

Mobile phones in 2000 were larger and heavier than 300g. Pockets have not changed at all

I notice that PSpocket doesn't drain alot of battery compared to emulators on MARKET.

That's because the playstation pocket emulator was made by a team of Sony professionals, and not some dude on the internet.

I'd daresay it has a lot more to do with the fact that they have all the data about both the emulated console and the Xperia play. Random dudes in the internet do nit have those kinds of advantages...but still, they do a better job.
Try running Everybody's Golf both from FPSE and from the Market version and you'll find that FPSE renders a flawless emulation which the paid version does not. I know I got pissed off.

[Q][I9505] Heat and Battery issues - Return or Keep?

Dear Friends and Community,
I recently acquired the S4 with moderate excitement. I already had a S3 and I was very happy with it but I had the option to get an S4 after extending one of our contracts so I went for it and gave my S3 to my wife - she's very happy with it now But i am not very happy with my S4 for 2 reasons:
- Extensive heat generation (36-47C) while surfing, watching videos, natigating calling etc.
- The heat seems to originate from the top portion of the phone on the back as well as the front side around the camera. it is uncomfortable to hold it against my hear on call
- My S3 did not heat up this much or this often. I also did not have any battery charge cliffs or jumps with my S3.
- As the device heats up, the battery drains INSANELY fast. Also I've noticed a disruptive and sudden battery discharge. As I charged my device for the frist time to 100% moments later the battery level jumped from for example 95% to 82% in one second. Is this due to battery calibration issues (because the device is new and the battery has not been charged many times yet) or is this something that can be considered a hardware flaw of the battery or device? I could be watching a video at medium brightness and my battery would go down by 1% each 2 minutes.
Sometimes during use and especially when it heats up some percentages are skipped while discharging (95%, 93%, 89% without sequencing down one by one but rather as 'chunks' of battery loss. ) did you exhibit similar behavior on your phone? Are these battery 'jumps' tied to the heat development?
And now the main questions: Should I return the device and exchange it against a new one or should I wait until Rom development or a patch tackles the problem ? I've already installed a recent OTA from Samsung and hoped the problem would vanish but no luck.
I'd be thrilled to hear your Opinions.

Ive also noticed heating up and fast battery discharge, not one full day of normal usage, my s3 lasted at least 2 times longer. i hope it will pass as i finish 3 times battery charge discharge. for now im excited with camera quality and benchmarks scores i love this phone already, its still plastic but i dont care, with every phone i use silicon or other cases, for s4 i bought original samsung case with plastic back rounded by rubber.
In few days if overheating and fast discharge will not pass on its own i will flash firmware again with kies (repeir mode) and reset all settings.

I also experienced the same issue, its getting hot not warm while doing normal tasks... Dear Thomas u have see temp. in between 37 to 47 but my phone heats upto 55c while gaming... now my phone is with samsung service center, but i am not sure they will replace it with new one as their policy allows replacement only within seven days from the date of purchase and i bought it 27th April itself, just next day of launch. Now i am thinking that why the hell i rushed to buy it. i should have waited for user reviews...
And BTW flashing original firmware doesn't help. Because people at service center had done that and given my cell back to me, but that issue was still there so submitted it again to the service center.....

Are you guys getting these temperature readings using e.g. Battery temperature reading of Cool Tool?
My battery temperature as reported by cool tool never got above 40C but it felt quite hot to the touch already And I am not using any case on it...

I have a case arround it. I will play some games later to see where the temp peaks. but I think it will also be around 50 because it already gets pretty warm doing basic stuff like watching videos or using viber to call.
It feels like this is a problem for all S4's out there.

You can check with the app called BatteryGraph and see if sometimes a few percent are skipped down the graph.

Same here with the heat. I undervolted -37,5mV and underclocked 300MHz, now everything is fine
Benchmarkscores are a little worse, but tbh, I really don't care. No current app or game is gonna use it anyway. Seems like a waste of battery life to keep the 1,9GHz clock speed.
Did the same with the Galaxy S2 I owned, which became quite hot too. Samsung has a tendency to overclock their chips just to outperform every other phone on the market, but the truth is, there is virtually no benefit in keeping the maxed clock speed in everyday use, other than doing benchmarks all the time ...

Heat issues .. poor optimization?

I'm having heat issue. phone heats up to around 100 during normal usage (texting, web browsing, social media) and unsuprisingly gets much hotter during games or youtube, around 105 F. Those temps are from a batter app, and the hotspot on the phone feels like it is up around the dimple. Certainly feels hotter than 105. Not so sure it is the battery causing a majority of the heat .... Still have a few days to return/exchange at best buy, so any advice is appreciated
No restarts due to heat yet. Have rebooted in safe mode, seems somewhat better after watching a 10 min youtube video... Can actually play fallout shelter in safe mode somehow, and the heat isn't as bad in safe mode as it is regularly. Temp stays around 100 F. Any way to see if it is an optimization issue without a factor reset and reinstall?

neglected to mention - this all happens while connected to wifi

Any phone that I've owned that I felt was to hot i exchanged it. It's paid off every time to do so. Good luck.

Mine was very hot
I dropped it off at Fed Ex to send it back a few minutes ago. I liked it a lot, but it was hitting 112 F within 5 minutes of browsing chrome/Facebook/Twitter. I've never had a phone get hot like that, unless I playing a game for an hour, or watching back to back to back videos over the LTE.
I could have exchanged it, but I will wait for the Nexus 5 and then make a decision of if I will order a new one or the Nexus.

So anyone else having this same issue?

To be honest, I've only had the Moto X heat up when I first got the phone and was downloading apps. And even then it didn't get as hot as my M8 did on a regular basis. I am not having any heat issues at all surprisingly.

I'd exchange it! I've used mine constantly even while being charged up by the turbocharger and I've never had it get uncomfortable to hold due to heat. That's browsing & playing games like order & chaos 2

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Oh not again. I was just about to ask about this, as my note 7 heats up as well but it hasn't exploded yet. When does yours heat up gaming or just casual use?

What was the ambient temperature of your environment of the time of use? Just wondering.

I've only had the phone get really warm to touch once, when using podcast, phone and navigation in the car. Around 68 degrees ambient. Nothing too unusual. This battery is much smaller and better tested. Though even my Note 7 never got dangerously hot.

I have been using my Note 8 heavy for 3 days now. With the brightness turned up to about 80% and my phone has not even gotten warm.

I drive a lot, in the direct sun and while using GPS and streaming music to the car. Every phone I've ever had has shut down on me at least once, with the iPhone shutting down as well.
Internal temps are usually 60-70°c at that point, so I honestly don't think the Note 8 will be any different.
I'm genuinely excited to see how it fairs, with the larger screen and dual glass body.

I had my Hotspot on all night so I could upload files from my pc...phone was in its case and it was still cool to the touch in the morning...

Maybe I have an older wireless charger, but my phone heats up to 40C while charging and only running Sidesync (wireless). It's the Ravpower wireless charger (not fast charging). This only happened once, and now I'm unplugging the cable to the charging stand after it reaches 100%....may need the ones with the built in fans.

mine gets really hot when watching 4K HDR content on youtube with max brightness... I have to switch hands from time to time haha

I was in my backyard yesterday reading on mine, it was about 90 degrees out. I didn't notice outside but when I came in my phone was hot.
I won't lie, I was concerned and sat it on a table away from me.

Exynos Model here.
Mine gets hot when I watch 4k Youtube videos.
I also noticed that it gets mildly warm when using spotify.
Other than that, it runs cool.

I was recording right in the sun for about 10 minutes I had it set up in 4k, got a message saying that the phone is too hot couldn't use the camera until it cool down.

Never heats! Only a little warm at times

Barely feel any heat even with a long gaming session.

Might be exynos related my snapdragon barely gets warm even after a long periods of demanding games. This is the first phone I've ever used that doesn't even get warm my exynos Note 5 only last a minute or two before it gets pretty warm and thermal throttle kicks on my framerate in games drop.

My Exynos N8 gets warmer in general use than my Snapdragon Xperia XZ. Warm but never hot.

After 5 months of use, my exynos 950F 128 GB only gets a little warm, I have even tried to make it hot, using it heavily, but, no, just a little warm, even cooler than other devices I have had

My N950F Exynos Note8 barely if ever gets warm. Only time I have felt it get warm was when using Googleaps Navigation while the phone sat in direct sunlight in the car dashboard.

Mine is exynos and it gets warm when i play world war heroes with full detail configuration, performance mode on and charging the phone at same time.

Despite living in a hot and very humid environment. I found that my N950N has been able to keep pretty cool even when in it's Spigen Tough Armor.

That is perfectly normal for your device get warm if you are playing graphics intensive games and while your device is charging.
