Definitely screwed up my device - looking for a miracle - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM Development

In playing around with the RomUpdateUtility.exe I finaly managed to brick my device. I hexedited the exe to do a task 2a after a task 29 and now I can't even power up my device
Any suggestions?
(and please don't tell me that I did a risky thing. I know that )

You might be able to revive it via JTAG. Have a look here. http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f475/htc-hd2-repair-dead-boot-possible-ort-jtag-1043210/

Thanks, it was also the first thing that came to my mind. A few days ago I read about this in a posting of Da_G. But... does this mean that I have to buy a 329 dollar device just to boot the HD2 up
Anyone any idea what HTC will charge for repairing a dead device?
OR.... anyone in the Utrecht area (land of the dutch people) that has a JTAG device

did you have bad blocks on your hd2 memory? oO
Just try to send it back and tell them it just dont wanted to turn on anymore
Maybe they trust you.
Edit: On Tylt TyTn... task 2a killed the HSPL, too. Maybe your phone has no SPL anymore.

are your sure its dead or just the screen isnt on?
i remember reading that someone killed his US phone by flashing a 51 radio, but actually managed to recover it as the phone was still detected by his computer when it was plugged in via USB without the battery in it.
might be a figment of my imagination though

Seems to be the case. I think I send it back to HTC with the argument that I had bad blocks and that a task 2a screwed up my device ...

Bad idea. I dont think the supportcenter wants to repair a task 2a device
You could say that the device didnt want to turn on after ROM update

Make a warranty claim at a HTC service centre. My service center replaced my motherboard for free knowing I had hacked it. Just speak nice to them, but don't tell them you hacked it at first, let them find out for themselves if they can, and then tell them with a sad face you didn't know that wasn't allowed.

I am doing similar work (for other purpose). you dun need a 329$ device to jtag your HD2.
Get a "bus pirate" from any eShop, QMAT (or not). Bus pirate includes a firmware interpreting jtag commands...
HD2 jtag pinouts are available somewhere on xda in the general question section.
Just...be freaking carefull when you open your HD2, the screen/touch pad and connectors are super easy to damage. good luck

How to brick my phone??

I know this is a strange request but I need to deliver my phone for repair because of HW issues and since it seems way to hard to recreate the original operator image from the dump, I thought that if I could get the phone into a situation where there is no bootloader then that should be enough.
Any ideas?
Thanx,
Eran

Wish I could but if I break it physically need to pay a fine
simple answer:
HTC doesn't take "the phone was burned" under warranty...
So instead of giving nonsense remarks, you could have said nothing instead.
Of course this is cheating, in a way, but since there are HW issues and HTC doesn't repair unless it's the original ROM on it...
Jocool: One method would be to disconnect during a ROM installation, thou i'm not sur if you can't still get it right after that.
You'd probably have to get it to the original bootloader which shouldn't be too hard and then interrupt it during a Radio flash.
Flash a radio and pull the cable about half way through...i think that should do it!

actually, i thought HTC dont cover software issues?
and if YOU damage the bootloader in the update process is that not your responsibility? as i'm pretty sure the RUU states somewhere that you update at your risk?
if i were you, just do something to fubber up the mainboard, best thing i suggest is to put something into the micro sd card slot which will basically insulate the pins such that it doesnt make contact with the memory card, that way you can get the thing changed like i did with my old charmer!

brick your phone???
4 months ago I sent my device for repairing, but they sent it back after 3 months with a note that: "the device can not be repaired any more becasue the Flashbaustein (this is the name in German and I couldn't find the english word) is kaputt"
of course I can assure you they even didn't try to switch on the device in these 3 months... after a long discussion with the T-Mobile agent, I took my device home and tried to re-flash a new ROM on it and everything went as it should be.
be careful with the risks you might cause to yourself
i once did it with my htc wizard ... though i forgot how already ... but I think it did it through the sd card... not sure if it's possible with hermes though since I didn't try that ...
but anyway, i think I modified the first few bytes in the 512 header of the rom with random characters and copied into the sd card to flash my wizard.
Tada, killed the bootloader
I hope that you can do that with the hermes ... I did see a wiki on how to flash your hermes through your sd.
Hope this helps

Hi
Try this, i assure you that will do the trick.
Connect a USB Cableto the HTC, get a 20V AC adapter, connect a wire to the Positive and one to the negative on the AC adapter connector, connect the negative to the outside of the usb cable, and, use the positive in every other contacts, wen you see SMOKE, STOP.
I'am preaty shure that they wont get to the BootLoader
New Idea
I have an idea...
1. Get an anvil
2. Get a sledgehammer
3. Place your Hermes on top of the anvil
4. Drop the sledgehammer on it
5. Pick up the pieces
6. Glue them together
7. Polish it with a fine cloth
8. Wrap it in a fancy paper
9. Send it to wherever you were sending it in the first place
Cheers.

I believe it would be more effective with a high voltage... Just imagine pluging it directly into a high voltage power line... It would be better than fireworks
the best way is to cause an electrical fault. just connect a 12V car battery to the battery terminals of your phone. just be careful as you may kill yourself due to the high current flwoing out of the battery regardless even though its 12v.
Thanx to all that gave me ideas some practical and some not
I was able to convince my provider to replace my phone without turning it on so problem solved
I fried my blackberry by just putting it in the microwave for 15 seconds, pop and bam dead
If you wanna brick your phone, just go into clockwork recovery and format your sdcard and so a whole system wipe. That's what I did then took it to verizon and got a new Droid x.

[Q] isit dead??

i read all old post, but no one work for me.
now the phone was brick, cant get on anymore even bootloader screen also no.
but when i plug in the cable n connect to my laptop, still can detected as(Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM)device.
pls help.
all the symptoms of wrong radio so yes, dead.
dead mean totally cant do anything rite?
thx samsamuel bro.tis the answer wat i wan.T.T
well, some clever types with ever so steady hands can probably JTAG it, but its not really an easy option, possibly if you have a real phone repair shop nearby, not just some networks returns center, somewhere with real phone nerds, heh, . on the plus side, no one can tell you had flashed anything illegal, so warranty is good so long as you play dumb.

Bricked HD2 help

help!
I have an TMOUS Hd2 that got bricked by a bad flash.
I can't access the boot loader or anything. LED light does not show when i plug it in a charger. When I plug it in my comp, it says QUALCOMM CDMA has been detected but cannot install drivers.
I have tried J-Tagging it at a local store but they say they can't get a connection.
what else can I do?
Is it permanently dead?
Hmmm sounds like the place you carried it to either did not use the right JTAG on it or did not know what they where doing. I know a member here that can do the JTAG but the you would have to send your phone to the US for him to work on it. If you might be interested I can PM you with more details, just let me know.
They "can't get a connection"? Did they take it apart?
Yes its dead but lots of people have used jtag to fix it.
"Can't get a connection" is an odd way to phrase it, is why I ask, sounds more like they think they can get to it thru the USB port or something,,
from what they said, they took it apart and tried jtagging it.
they said the jtag connection won't recognize the chipset... |:
i gave them a call and they said they used the RIFF Jtag.
anyway, @T-Macgnolia, please PM me with the information
I would LOVE to have this phone up and running again

Sounds like they did not use a JTAG fore the T-Mobile HTC HD2 as it is one for the TMOUS and one foe the international HD2. or they did not have the correct software for the HD2. I tend to think it was the first reason.
I got your PM froibet and sent one back to you with the info you wanted. best of luck man.

vancouver. It's very difficult to find a JTAG store in my area.
The repair shop said that they will give it one more go tonight and if everything fails, then they will just give it back to me no fees.
There are other repair stores here but from what I asked them, it seems like they do flashing only and not JTAG--they say that they do not disassemble the phone and just connect through usb, which I don't think will work.
Is there something I can tell the repair store that's JTAGing my HD2 right now? Such as using the TMOUS version instead of international?

If they are doing it via USB they will not get it to work no matter what they use.
Download the stock rom for your location, expand it, and rename the nbh file to LEOIMG.nbh, copy it to the root folder of SD card, put the SD card into HD2. Then, hold the vol-down and press power on. You will see a screen for flash original ROM.

Basically it means your NAND chip is screwed, and it is time for a new main board cause you can not replace the NAND chip by itself. The NAND is where your OS resides and other things to. Go to the link belowvto learn more about what a NAND chip iscand does.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory
so not being able to establish a connection with the JTAG is pretty much a dead NAND?
it doesn't recognize the device as a qualcomm cdma anymore when plugged into my pc =_=

Yeah if it is not recognizing it as qualcomm cdma anymore and they can not establish a connnection with the JTAG connected to the main board then you bread another main board as it sounds like not only your NAND chip iscahot but your processeor too.
what great luck. better give those guys at the store a call cuz before i gave the phone to them, it was recognizing the phone as a qualcomm and not anymore ughh

No seriously though I have no idea what is wrong with your phone bit it is exhibiting odd behaviour. Maybe the repair shop did fix it with JTAG and just didn't think they did, if so you got out of having to pay them for it.
Or maybe it was not bricked in the first place and you just was not holding the volume down button down long enough or all the way down, who knows. But atleast it booted up that is a major plus. Keep us informed of any further updates man.
I bet you a thousand dollars it was as simple as the battery pins weren't completely touching the battery so it "didn't boot no matter what" then when you reinserted the battery it caught the pins and booted, lol.

[Q] HD2 bricked, buy a riff box?

Hello,
I am new on this forum (speaking of posting) i've been reading alot on this forum.
unfortunately, not enough..
Yesterday i got a htc hd2 from my dad because he couldn't work with it.
the only problem was that if he was calling the other person heard him like being in a bathroom or so,
I tought maybe it was because of the software ( i have put android on it about 2-3 month's ago maybe a bad version)
So i decided to put another version on it..
Well everything worked fine for me , set everything up but internet wouldn't open,
So i decided to reboot the phone, but that's where it went wrong, the whole phone died , not responding on powerbutton or anything else,
So as far as i know it's bricked.
the only wat to unbrick it (i know) is by using a jtag riff box, i don't know anyone in my country (the netherlands) who have it.
Now i don't know what to do.
sell the phone as broken for parts like display etc.
of shall i buy a box myself (107 euro without connector)
What are the points of concidering besides of the money,
is it enough to buy the box + connector and then download the software, or do i need to buy licenses too?
if not it's very attracting, an maybe i can even help other people who have bricked his/hers phone
If anybody have a trustable site for me to buy one in europe also please let me know.

No, unfortunatly even that is not working,
The whole phone is not responding on anything.
i can push my powerbutton, but even no light goes on , and nothing appears on the display.
That's why i guess it's bricked (also because i am using a t-mobile sim even it is a HD2 which is sold by a hi (kpn nl) provider)
Nobody has an idea what's best to do? or does know someone in the netherlands with a box?
It would be easier to help you if you would have said what you've done to the phone.
I find it very hard to brick this phone if HSPL was on it, as there is nothing the Malgdr or CWM can do to ruin it (to my knowledge).
Try these two things:
1) Is the battery charged - sometimes that might be the problem
2) Connect the phone to your PC, and see if it recognizes it.
Let us know how it went.

Sorry, don't have a box.
But, Check the battery pins, commonly, one of these are bent, and that's why it won't boot-up.
Does it use Magldr? or cLK? (Eg, when you booted, did you see a black screen with white text, and gogogo as the last line?(magldr) or did it just boot as android(cLK).
If cLK, put your phone in charger and see if the red light turns on.
Hope this helps a bit,
Eelke
I had mine jtag here in teh US I am not sure the cost involved but he can fix it for you if you care to have it shipped here. The person that did it is a member of xda and gave me fantastic service I can send you his website if that interests you. Just PM me if you wish.
Good Luck
Riff?
Never heard of one. Will a repair shop not have one?
Check the battery compartment and see if any pins connecting the battery to the phone are bent in a wrong direction. If so, correct this, put battery back in, connect phone to charger / USB and try turning it on.
Okay, back since a while.
Last week i found my HD2 again, (still not working.. )
So i thought about going to fix it.
I found out it isn't the battery though.. i tried another one in my phone, still dead,
My battery in another phone.. and that works.
So now i want to buy an riff box for sure, i fond some at the internet but i don't know if i can trust those sites...
First one is : http://gsmserver.com/shop/gsm/riff_box_jtag.php
Second one is: http://www.multi-com.pl/
third one is:http://www.ipmart.com/main/
Has anyone of yours some experience with one of these three shops?
1st one would be my first choice because they have all i want to order,
2nd one is the most expensive,
3th, miss something i want, but i can make it on by my own.
So can you please help me figure this out?
Best recommendation from me and your hd2, if you want to learn, is http://www.segger.com/j-link-edu.html (it no need credits, +++ another $, it's tootaly open for all you want with your phone) + great revskills software !!! I see a lot of solutions, but nobody seems to have told you to boot up your phone using volume down, which gets you directly into the bootloader, from where you can flash the Winmo 6.5 ROM.
Did you try that?
Otherwise there are numerous ways of trashing it i guess... mess around with electrical wiring and make sure the mainboard has a power spike or something... then you're sure nobody will be able to do something with it
Of course I tried it. The problem is that for some reason I can't get into bootloader, and I tried to do that 100 times with all different methods with no luck. I only can get into MAGLDR. I wrote all this in my first message in that threat
Well, from what i can understand after looking at your original post, you cannot enter the tri-color bootloader? Well, have you tried a hard reset? And, when you mentioned liquid entered your phone, you should also check the water indicator stickers on your phone and battery to see if they are pick or red. Else, they will not bother replacing or repairing it. Have you also tried resetting Android from MAGLDR? Back to your request, if you cannot enter the bootloader and unable to flash anything, the easiest ways to brick(any maybe recover) your phone are all void. The best way to physically damage your phone might be to short circuit it. Alternatively, if you just do not want them to know that you have flashed MAGLDR, you should damage the ribbon cable for the LCD. You have to unscrew the phone for this, but do gently remove the warranty and water indicator stickers before this. Please do explore all avenues like a hard reset and Android reset
i just got off the phone with htc and thay still fix the phone even if it has android on it thay will just replace the main bord because thay dont know how to fix it. but i have bricked my phone alredy and it wont turn on at all due to flashing a wrong rom on it that was ment for a diffrent country my phone is htc hd2 tmoble us. anyway you may just want to fix it your self and use the riff jtag box

Yes, I cannot enter bootloader and yes I tried hard reset (with volume up and down keys) with no luck. I checked my indicator stickers and they all look fine (white). The liquid damage was not a water damage I get a little bit of oily liquid on my phone but just a little, so very little of it could get inside my phone if any, but after that my phone just frozen on android screen and when I tried to reset it, it’s always freezes on android boot screen. And yes I tried resetting Android from MAGLDR, I even tried to install different android soft but after installation it still freezes on android boot screen.
Code:
the easiest ways to brick(any maybe recover) your phone are all void
Can you explain more about his one? And how I can do that?
I don't really want to unscrew anything because if I going to do something wrong I would void my insurance and they not going to change it at all. I was thinking maybe just drop it in a big cup of water and hold it for like 30sec - 1min. I think my insurance will cover water damage and I think whey not even going to bother to fix it. What do you think?

The thing is that I have insurance on it not a warranty. If I only had just a warranty I will think of fixing it by my self with jtag. But now I just need to think of how to break it so whey don't know it was hacked pay to my insurance £20 - £30 and I should get brand new HD2
bump !
High voltage electrical charge: via stun gun or similar high voltage output such as automobile ignition coil ect ... Have seen a stun gun used on a computer, killed it without any obvious signs of damage ...
