EVRC-B
Changed from "disabled" to "enabled"
rebooted
now my download speeds in my house (bad reception) went from .15 to .71
I tested back and forth 3 times in 3 different places, better speeds around the board.
Are there any downsides to this and why is this happening?
Please note, this is NOT the same as the method called "get better reception" that doesn't change what I'm referring to. Could some of you try this and see if you get the same results?

Yes I understand that, what I don't understand is why it increases my data speeds so much.
I only get 2 bars of signal in most of my house. Im going to try the same thing and run a few speed tests before and after to see if you are right.

Contact Sprint and get your MSL. It's unique to each phone. That's your password.
You need your MSL, there's a thread somewhere detailing how to get it using CDMA workshop

That's odd. Have you also changed your Orig. Home and Roam Home settings to EVRC-B? Also, have you noticed any battery drain difference after changing to EVRC-B?
OP, change it back to original and do the tests again.

These changes did not affect my download speeds, they are still faster with EVRC-B enabled
Have anyone else other than the op seen seen faster results?
OP, when was the last time you hit de bong?
I don't see this affecting 3G
EDIT: I can verify that there is no change for me. Just had to try it ;x.
Did numerous tests.
I got an average of tests with and without evrc-b enabled.
It actually turned out that having it disabled gave me a few more kilobits
Make sure that you're using the same server every time!
this didn't change my download speeds at all. speedtest.net reports the same speeds before and after the change.

First I apologize if this has been covered in another post - I searched but couldn't find and if so a redirect would be appreciated.
I'm trying to determine just how fast data can be pushed through the phone and I've run into some problems.
I'm trying to use speedtest.net to do this and it was working with the stock ROM but since I've been trying different ROMs (3 of them in fact) I always get the error "Missing License Key" in he Speedtest.net window.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Since that one doesn't work I've been using the Speedtest.net mini. That at least gives me up and download speeds.
But I've also found that whne I connect to the internet with WiFi the speeds are almost slower than a decent H connection.
It's rare that I get over 3 down /1.5 up on a WiFi N connection that has 20+Mbit Comcast connection behind it.
Here I'd just like to confirm if everybody else is seeing the same thing:
What dl/ul speeds are your seeing with your HD2 connected to a fast wireless router?
On the stock ROM it wasn't much higher than the 3G.
Not for me, I usually get 13-14 Mbps down/ 50 kBps (stupid cable upload speeds) up on wifi and around 1.8 Mbps down/ 1.5 Mbps up on HSXPA/UMTS.
I personally have very little faith in the reliability of numbers from speedtest.net
Try testing this way...use IE instead of opera, and go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest (it wont run in opera but will in IE). When I use that method while connected to my home wifi, I get the exact same speed my desktop gets using the same dsl source (just a hair over 5MB down), which my 3g connection here has yet to match...usually caps out at around 3MB or so.
I've seen the same behaviour as the OP.
My Wi-fi speeds are slower than my HSPA speeds.
I had same issue as well. I had bsb tweaks installed. I disabled the wifi n tweak. after that both my 3g and wifi speeds went up. Re-enabled the tweak to see if speeds would be reduced and this time only the wifi speeds increased again. tweak must of been causing some sort of issue with the 3g and wifi speeds. Try disabling it, soft reset and than re-enable the tweak. Hopefully it works for you as it did for me.

Which ROM are you using and how much faster is it? Do you see a large speed difference with a different ROM between a fast WiFi and 3g/h?
The only real difference I noticed between the stock and 3 other ROMS I've installed so far is that I wasted a long time trying to get WiFi working in KAOS but never could. I was able to get a connection but the client never reported an IP address. Turns out the ROM I was using was not specifically for the TMOUS HD2 so maybe that was the cause.

My situation is reversed; the cable manages 3mb up on the PC but the 3G/H is almost always much slower on upload than download.

Thanks, that was an excellent suggestion; I hadn't tried this particular site before and while it uses the same data as speedtest.net it also allows a specific destination and works with IE.
In random testing on WiFi I got around 7-8Mb down, 3 Mb up. While driving around the local area I got 5 bars from two different towers and found an average 1.0Mb dl, 0.8Mb up, and that was pretty constant whether moving or stopped.
I've also noticed in general that the "H" only appears whenever data is actually being transferred (sounds like our back-end hasn't been upgraded). Right now I can get neither the speedtest.net nor the mini version to work - the windows just stay white.
I'll keep trying both of them to compare over the next few weeks but I think the biggest part of the problem is Adobe Flash. There is a reason why Apple doesn't support them and I don't think it's all political like Adobe would have us believe.
I've also done some more experimenting with mobilespeedtest.com as well as general testing over the past few days.
Mobile speed test shows that IE seems to be faster/more stable than Opera - by probably 5 to 20%. While the absolute numbers had alot of variability, Opera was unable to complete the 5 MB and 7 MB tests at all; the browser window just remained blank.
The other thing to throw in here while trying to clean up the phone I found the post about doing a hard reset and that also seemed to help. I don't have any solid data but I would certainly hard reset it again and recommend it to anyone that has changed ROMS much or done a lot of installing/deinstalling of cabs.

I don't have BSB tweaks installed currently but I performed the WirelessN tweak in the registry. Based on what you've said here I went back and switched it off, did a soft reset, tested and then back on and retested, and found no dramatic difference between any of them. What I found was a lot of variability between the tests in the same setting - even one right after the other. (I would probably do well to review the wireless router settings to see if I can up the data throughput rate.)
To compare I checked a notebook using N located at about the same distance from the router and got speeds a little (5-10%) faster than on the phone (-hardwired into the router I get 25Mbps down). This tells me the phone is as optimized as it's going to be going through my router.
So on the phone I see final scores of about 7-8Mbps down, 2-3 up, with spikes over 10 Mbps down and 4 up during the tests.
Deeted - error post
I tried "mobilespeedtest.com" and get around 1100-1300 kbps on wifi and the same or more when wifi off and using t-mobile (with "H" showing, not 3g).
speakeasy/speedtest on wifi 3421 kbps, off wifi , 3569 kbps (3.57mbps)

No, Not on the Stock ROM.
Like Opera Mini and Skyfire, I think Opera Mobile 10 goes through an external server. One cannot get an accurate speed test that way. Use Opera 9, or better IE, as it works with flash speed tests as well, not only the mobile ones.

Sounds like a phone specific issue.
You could try updating your radio to the newest WiMax version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
If that doesn't work then I would get a replacement.
It's not difficult to flash your radios and the chance of bricking your phone is so small. You really should update your radio/WiMax at least in my opinion. Then maybe the PRI/PRL. Just check Calk's thread and you'll be fine
I did both of them and nothing still.

TRY THIS (i picked this up off the DEV forums back in July and works perfectly for me and my buddies)
First call sprint and ask them for you MSL code (6 digits) they will give you the code no problem.
TURN OFF YOUR 4G *** MAKE SURE 4G IS OFF ***
1. Dial ##3282# hit edit enter the MSL code sprint gave you and click on Wimax.
2. Scroll down to WiMax_Entry_RX(RSSI)(dbm) - click on it and change the value from -89 to anything from -100 to -110 (this will allow your phone to connect to weaker 4G signals). Mine is set at -100.
3. Scroll down to WiMax_Exit_Delay(s) - change that value to 15 (which is 15 seconds) so you will stay connected to 4G longer when the signal drops and you wont get dumped right into 3G.
4. Then hit menu and commit modifications - you phone should reset - if those two dont help just PM me and i can walk through some of the other tweaks in that menu.
YMMV but i have done this to my EVO and 3 of my buddies and it works great as you can pick up a 4G signal where others cannot and you can stay on the 4G network longer than anyone else when the signal drops.

don't you get better transfer rate on a strong 3G signal than a very weak 4G signal?
what's the point of staying connected to 4G longer when the signal is gone? if there's no signal, there's no signal...why wait longer for it to connect to 3G so you can keep doing what you were doing?

+1 on this. Also check out the thread to connect to 4G sooner (I'll dig up the link here after lunch if no one else does)
I only get to use 4g while on the interstate, but there were huge patches of it where I would get disconnected. Now I can drive all the way to work, connected, without a drop.

Since you're rooted you can just download msl reader from the market instead of having to call sprint and all that.

You're right, you can download faster on a strong 3G signal; however, if you are downloading a large file (got ROMs?) if you are mobile and come across a dip in reception and your signal is dropped...so is your download. Now in my case on the interstate, I would drop out of 4G twice on the way to work for aboutfive miles each time. I set my minimum connection to -98 db and it never drops the connection and I never have less than one bar. If it has nothing it will only be for a couple seconds if that, but I never have an interrupted connection.
whoa thanks guys. long story short. I was going to take it back so S-off'ed it and derooted it. I said Hmm 4g is now on... So then I rerooted and from flashing the PC36IMG file to deroot my evo, it must have changed my boot loader to 2.10 from 2.02...
None the less Its all good now. I just finished the root and when I got into the rom ( sprint lovers, its inlcuded with the savior method ) I had 4g, I then nand'ed and Now It just rebooted and IM in 4g with 2 bars on the 4g icon.
My dad is rockin Myn's warm and he has 4g all day. Oringally on my first root I did Fresh and I think that crunked up my ****. Weird thing is that I held onto my RSAs and MACs all matched, just didnt want to fire up. I did try to update radios etc and nothing.
And the other thing is that where I live is a 4g in buildings area, so I know something was acting up. Im going to flash Myns and see what I get.
And is that 4G fix really worth it?
Yes

cool, thanks for the explanation. makes sense that you don't want to drop your downloads...are there any download utilities out there that could help with this, like the ones for regular PCs? it could be very useful to have an app that will resume a download when the connection comes back.
anyway, thanks for posting those settings and how to get in there, could come in very handy in the future.
in theory that would make sense but i can still download at 2 mb/s on 1 bar or less using 4G in NYC where as if i was on 3G i would have full strength and would probably only hit 1 mb/s

The only client-side apps that handle downloads for me are the torrent apps, but that's just inherent in how torrents work. I haven't come across a download manager like you describe. The download management in Android will wait for a connection if you lose signal using the same radio, preserving the integrity of the file, but it doesn't handle the switching from 3G to 4G well in my experience...it always drops the download.
Hey picked up an Samsung Focus and I am trying to figure out if there is an HSPA icon or it always puts 3G? I unlocked the service menu but can't determine if I am connecting. Help and clarification appreciated.

Well first of all you'd have to setup your apn in the settings (not that MMS won't work for the moment), and when HSPA is active 3G changes to 3G+ at the top. hopes this helps!
I know the Rogers branded Focus has HSUPA disabled by default and only has HSDPA enabled.
I had to go into the configuration settings for mine to enable HSUPA for SaskTel's 3G+ (which I guess we're allowed to call 4G now).....
So it shows 3G+ ... I assume mine is not set up correct then... I'll go fiddle around with it.
i enabled HSUPA on my focus and have seen greatly improved speeds while tethering and browsing on my phone. however i have never seen 3G+ icon.

is where i got the steps to turn on HSUPA.
is this even the same thing?
AT&T network Minnesota
i think the reason i never see the 3G+ is because AT&T hasn't set up the 4g here yet. not sure.
but the crazy thing is that my speeds are ridiculous fast. 6.20mbps Download and 1.5mbps upload.
I think for at&t you need a certain sim card to access the hspa+ network. I looked for about 20 min to find one of the articals but cant find them. Anyone reading this remember seeing information about this?

I just followed all of the steps, but how can you tell if there's been any change? Will it show 3G+ at the top when you're in a supported area?
Does this have any perceivable effect on battery life?
Did someone say MMS would stop working with this change?
How do I revert back to default if there are issues?

Mine still shows 3G.
I restarted mine and the settings held, that was one question I had, if it would revert or not.
I am now seeing more than double what I had before, which was a struggle to get 1,000 KB.
Just for comparison purposes, when I first used http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
for my tests on a non 3G phone it would give me a result. That was a 100k file size.
When I went to the HTC 8925, 3G phone this would not work. It told me to try a larger file as it was "unstable/too fast a result".
It then offered the link:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
which has a 1 meg file. This would give me a ~800K result.
Now, with the change we are discussing here I am getting the "unstable/too fast a result" again!
There are not a lot of speeds tests that will run in this phones browser. I am forced to use http://www.ispgeeks.com/wild/module...23744.9&downloadtime=1.035&KB=3000&recorded=1
and it ranges from 1.39 to over 3 meg.
Battery life. Looks fine from yesterday. Down 20% from full charge last eventing till this morning, but I expected that, since last night I ran the browser a lot playing with the new speeds.
Update: try http://testmy.net/mobile/upload to assess upload speeds. I am getting ~400K to 600K uploeads. I used to be at less than 200K before the change.
You could also just get the "bandwidth" app out of marketplace

How do you go back to the original settings? While there is a big speed increase on my phone, the battery went from full to dead in seven hours. I can't have that.
I tried the hack yesterday, and today for the first time ever (Bought phone on December 12th) the phone rebooted itself. There is no storade card installed. Never had a storage card in it.
Those don't do upload and they all suck as far as accuracy.

You basically do the same steps but you change "Release 6(HSDPA/HSUPA)" to "Release 5 (HSDPA Only)". Here's the modified instructions in case you forgot:
From Diagnosis enter: *#32489#
(GSM test) Shows the ciphering status and options to enable or disable it.
Tap the small "Back" button at the bottom of the screen
Now select:
Tap: [5] RRC(HSPA) Control

BTW, I tried to do some tests with the Bandwidth app on the marketplace, but it's not such a great app and constantly froze up especially on the upload tests.
The app got an update a few days ago and now works pretty flawlessly.
According to mobilespeedtest.com I'm getting around 1400 kpbs. Not too bad.

My Focus with this tweak got 1220 kbps.
My HTC Tilt 2 with the Energy ROM got 2150 kbps.
Hello,
I just bought Omnia7 and I can't turn 3G off, because there is no such option. I read that it's possible to do in diagnosis. How to do it? I really need to turn it off...
Solved:
Open diagnosis and enter: *#2263# then you can choose: Automatic or 2G or 3G. )) Nice
The t-mobile.de rom lets you change 2g to 3g in settings. I wonder if its available anywhere?!

Well, open diagnosis and enter what I wrote in first post and you can switch easily :]
Sometimes my phone is on 2g when this setting is on automatic. If I change the setting to prefer 3g, it then immediatly picks up a 3g signal. Does anyone know why it doesn't just use the 3G automatically if it is available?

Because it can get low, so phone will go to 2G. :]

Thanks for the response. The problem I have is that the Xbox Live Extras app won't connect to Xbox Live over 2G, I just get an error message. Over 3g it's fine. Is this a known issue that happens for everyone? I guess I will have to leave it set to prefer 3g in diagnostics.

Yea, it happens to me too :] Well, I think it needs more data and etc. :]
When set to prefer 3G, will the phone still use 2G if there is no 3G signal at all?
There is a regedit on the main dev forums that allows to unlock the 3g to 2g toggle for the phones settings.
How can I enter in Open diagnosis mode?

Dude, when givin' sum info pls try to describe procedures as clearly as possible.
When ya dial da code, there are three options popin'up and a lotta numeric buttons plus "back" and "'end" So be so kind as to give a detailed step-by-step manual. In yr case ya should've at least pointed out that these steps do not display any additional toggle switch bw 2G/3G. Moreover at SR ya still got da finger
So nothing is SOLVED

Open diagnosis by dialing in dialer ##634#
Then diagnosis app should be added to your app list, open it
In diagnosis dial *#2263#
You get to choose from 3G, 2G and Automatic. Near these options you have numbers 1, 2, 3. So choose one of them and press the key on the keyboard. Choose the connection (all) and press end. That's it

Is it possible to get dev unlocked phone on NoDo?
Being a noob myself, I spent allot of time doing my research and figuring things out. I thought I would share. These mods are a reproduction of the original author(s) so all the credit goes to them for their original work.
Let's get to work!
Prerequisites:
A Rooted Sense Rom. Either Stock Rooted or MikShift Rom.
Download and install MSL Reader from Android Market ('M'aster 'S'ubsidy
'L'ock)
Download and install Speed Test from Android Market
NANDroid BACKUP! Because ya never know.
Turn off wireless radio.
Turn on 4g radio.
Now that we have that all done we can move on to the good stuff.
Run Speed Test a few times to get an average upload and download speed for your current settings. Do this for comparison purposes.
Run MSL Reader to get your MSL. Write it down.
Open Phone Dial pad and enter ##3282#
EPST Window will open, Select Edit Mode
Please Enter Password window will popup, Enter your MSL here.
Select WiMAX option.
In the WiMAX options, select WiMAX_Scan_Retry(s). Note your default value and write it down so that you can set it back if you have to.
Change WiMAX_Scan_Retry(s) to 15
Select WiMAX_Idle_Sleep(s). Write down default value.
Change WiMAX_Idle_Sleep(s) to 30
Select WiMAX_Entry_RX(RSSI)(dBm). Write down the default value.
Now this option (WiMAX_Entry_RX(RSSI)(dBm) can be adjusted between -89 to -110. I have mine set to -94. I changed this value a few times to find the best download and upload speeds. First finish the rest of this guide before testing different values.
Select WiMAX_Entry_Delay(s). Write down the default value.
Change WiMAX_Entry_Delay(s) to 1
press your [menu] button and select commit changes. This could take a minute or two. Once the settings are saved your device will reboot.
Test to confirm better signal strength and speeds.
Enjoy.
I did this a few days ago and noticed I get much better 4g reception in areas that I didn't used to get it. I set my WiMAX_Entry_RX to -89 which is the strongest.
I think most people will probably use that value and where I am that

Im assuming that these changes will stick if i NANDroid back to my CM7?
Yes

I'm an epic user, perhaps soon to be speedy user, who has done this mod. All the entry rx seting does is adjust the signal strength required to connect. For example, if you set the entryRx value to -89dbm the weakest signal wimax will connect to is -89dbm. Speed should not be affected by this mod but coverage definitely is. I recommend everyone set their entryRx to -110dbm.

Is there a reason you're suggesting this??? I'd rather have a little bit weaker signal than no signal at all. To be honest I have noticed a pretty significant increase in speed. Before I used to only get 4-5Mbps now i'm seeing more 6-7Mbps on my -89 setting.

When you raise the setting to -89dbM you make it so the signal has to be greater than or equal to -89dbM so networks with a rating of -91 to -110 dbm will be dismissed by the radio as too weak and it will not connect to them.
If your speeds have gone up with the higher signal strength requirement then try both settings a few times in the same location and if your theory still holds to be true then you have discovered something interesting,
TL DR : -89dbm is stronger than -110dbm
what im starting to notice with -110 set, sure itll connect in places it wouldnt for me but itll constantly hang and dis/reconnect when I try to use it....
i can't connect at -89 at all at my home but with -110 i have spots in my house and yard that i can get a bar but with probs stated above....
I have had mik, stock, cm7 all with the same results....
My townhome is literally 25 feet out of good to perfect 4g coverage
i'm in the middle of 3 towers and can connect to two of them from my home.....
I'm thinking sprint set it at -89dbm since any connection above that was possibly deemed unstable....

Of course you're seeing this at 110. You told your phone to pick up the most distant, unclear signal it can possibly see. Which, in most cases is NOT ENOUGH for stable communications.
Sprint set it to the value they did for 100% reliable, every time, but due to the nature of the 4G and it's low penetration power, eh, not saying much. LOL

So would you say this is sorta a pointless change?
Yeah I wish wimax was on nextels 800mhz bandwith lot....
