Rooted EVOs Send Text Messages in Gibberish? - EVO 4G General

I don't have anything concrete to substantiate this yet, but it appears that text messages sent from my rooted EVO will, on occasion, show up a gibberish when viewed by the recipient.
Both my mother and sister have BlackBerry phones, and they have each received one or two text messages from me during the past three weeks that arrive as a nonsensical string of letters, numbers and symbols. My girlfriend has a feature phone and hasn't noticed anything, and neither have any of my other friends who have iPhones or Android phones. My mother and sister are the only two people I text who have a BlackBerry, but I don't believe the issue is on their end. Yes, BlackBerry phones are antiquated, etc., but I'm the only person they know with the EVO, and a rooted EVO at that. Neither have received text messages in gibberish from anyone else.
I unrooted my phone for a week and just rooted it again last night using unrevoked3, and this morning my mom said one of my text messages came though in gibberish. My sister told me the same thing three weeks ago when I initially rooted my phone. What are the odds that a rooted EVO sends text messages in gibberish only to BlackBerry phones, and only on occasion? Has anyone else experienced this?
Posted from my mobile. Please excuse the brevity of the post, as well as any spelling or grammatical errors, if any.

I've never heard of this and never had this issue. Been running Fresh roms since rooting (about a day after release...), texting people with iPhones, Android, Blackberries, and even old flip phones and what not. Not a single person has reported to me that they couldn't read my text.

I likewise have never heard of this. It also doesn't make sense at all. What Rom are you using?

I am using the stock rooted ROM. Nothing special and no apps have been removed.
I just forwarded this post to a friend of mine, and he responded with the following: "Back when I was running Android on my WinMo phone, a few of the very early builds would send txt gibberish to my wife. She had a Blackberry."

over 1200 txts last month, all from my rooted EVO. Not ONCE did anyone tell me it came thru jibberish. Sounds to me like you have a unique problem. However, I did not use unrevoked to root my phone. I used toastcfh's method. Perhaps this is a problem resulting from unrevoked3 as it doesnt occur on mine. Also, I have 2 evos rooted same way now, no jibberish txts.

You may be right that it is related to the root method. The first time I rooted, however, I used Toast's method.
Also, it's not like this happens every time I send them a text message. It has happened two or three times over a one-month period.

I too have seen that in the past. My best friend has a BlackBerry and occasionally he would see gibberish on my text messages. At that time, I was rooted using a custom ROM (Fresh Evo). Right now, I am rooted using the stock ROM and we have sent texts and it seems everything is fine.
Also, I that was before the latest OTA update. Who knows if HTC fixed and never said anything..

Ah, see, I'm not alone.
I'm now using the stock rooted version of 1.47 and it happened this morning.

Please vote in the poll. It's the first thing most people see when the open the thread, and I am clearly not the only individual who has been confronted with this issue.

Perhaps it's not a phone issue at all. Maybe it's on Sprint's side of things.

Perhaps you are correct. I didn't even consider that. All phones involved are Sprint phones.

I think it has to do with the ****ty ass rim blackburries

I would tend to agree however my girlfriend has a blackberry and she never said anything like this has happened.

Are you using special characters on your text messages? This happens to me when I send a Spanish text message due to Sprint CDMA system not being able to recognize characters other then the English language... or so I have been explained by them.

I had this happen ONCE on my EVO before I even rooted. I think it's on sprints side

A sample of what it looks like would be nice. Do you still have access to the gibberish message?
Maybe I will run into it at some period. My parents both use Blackberries.

Sure. I just asked them both if they could forward the message to me.
EDIT
Here is a sample, highlighted in bold: hanks e me a minute ing it in a message to me? 5
Here is the message I actually sent: Thanks, I will.
Somehow, "Thanks, I will" turned into "hanks e me a minute ing it in a message to me? 5".

I think Swype is the culprit. When I send a text message using swype on the evo to a BlackBerry, they get gibberish. When I use the normal keyboard it works fine

SMS problems?

I'm running Syndicate Rom along with Phoenix kernel. As of late I've been having problems receiving text messages. Sometimes I'll receive them hours late (with the correct time stamp), other times I won't receive them till I send an outgoing message to the same person (where I get the pending messages almost instantly, again with the correct time stamp), and some messages I don't receive at all.
Has anyone experienced similar problems, and is it possible that it isn't ROM related but maybe some sort of other software conflict? Any ideas or input would be great
Thanks,
-1greek
Same problem with stock di18. Its on sprint's end.
Yea, I've had this issue since Christmas. I thought it was my SMS popup application, but I think it's a Sprint issue. It's getting really annoying too.

I've been having the same issue but it's only with certain people.
I notice it more on certain ROMs than others. Also I notice it more when texting my wife (sprint customer as well) than to/from other carriers.
Could be that it's on Sprint's end but not sure.

[Q] Anyone having problems with MMS on Sprint the last few days?

It's been taking me hours just to send one photo.. And half the time it fails. Also taking forever to receive them. I'm getting them 6+ hours after they're sent to me.
No issues here, have you switched roms or anything?
Swyped via my cyanogenized and gingerbreaded EVO
Went to CM7 when it came out but haven't switched since. Problems just started yesterday-ish
Problems yesterday but fixed today.
It's way better for me today, but still acting up.
My girlfriend and I are both having mms problems. We are both running CM7. I thought it was just crappy service, I just switched to sprint friday. I flashed sprint lovers rom just to see. It sends in like 10 seconds on that rom.

I have slight problems evey now and then but nothing major.. cm7
I use and love CM7 but there was an issue with MMS in the CM7 v7.0.0, but I think it was fixed. Yesterday I was not receiving MMS while I was roaming but I could send them. After I got home I was able to send and receive but never did get the ones from early that day.
My daughter tried to send me a photo on Sunday. Got a "Message not downloaded, Generic network error" notification, several times. After an hour or two, the message finally came through.

I experienced the same thing. I imagine that it was just a temporary network outage.

I have an htc evo on boostmobile and have been having the same problem the last few days with mms, Boost uses sprint towers so I guess it has something to do with sprint and nothing to do with phones/roms, I'm running Fresh rom.
Sure sounds like Sprint to me...
Glad it's over.
I tried a few different aosp roms the last few days. I had the same mms issue with all of them. It either took forever to send or never sent at all. I downloaded gosmspro from the market and changed the max size to <300k and I dont have any problem sending anymore.

Then it would be the rom in that case, I'm a bit stumped because if I turn the phone off and then back on the mms message sends.

Text messages or picture messages???

Text message from the future.

Anyone getting text messages from the future while on roaming? Is there a solution to fix this little probelm? I'd rather not have to use a 3rd party messaging app. I like the stock one. I'm running SRF 1.1.0.

It means that when he gets a text, it says its from a time later in the day. If he gets a text at 2p.m. the phone says he got it at 6 or 7 p.m.Usually only happens while roaming, and its a Samsung mms.apk problem, if you flash the aosp messaging, it doesn't have that problem.

Even while roaming, I only got a slew of "future" txts when I was out of my hometown...although it was the same time zone :-/
OTOH, I remember when it was New Year's Eve/Day with my old Touch Pro a few years back, and I got txts from 1/1/2013. I rejoiced in telling everyone that the Mayans were wrong and we wouldn't all die in the end times. :-D
respond back to that text from the future and ask the person for the result of the Game 2 Mavs vs Heat game. I would like to make me a few bets if ya know what I mean. ;P
I used to get these on my iphone lol but they would be from YEARS in the future and would be empty. ****ed with me for a bit. Ive never heard of anyone having this issue or even heard of the issue itself before. I just figured the iphone was a piece of **** later on lol

I have this problem quite often because I'm roaming at work. It happened on my old Hero as well. There are some apps in the market that have seemed to work, though they seemed hacky last I tried, and resigned to just live with it. Just now a search on the market revealed http://market.android.com/details?id=com.mattprecious.smsfix , which looks pretty good. Haven't tried it.

I was about to post about this before I read the entire thread. I had this same problem from day one with my Epic at work because the signal at my cube for either side isn't that great and I flip between Sprint & roaming on Verizon constantly without using Roam Control to force it to stay on Verizon (which is what I typically do since Verizon's signal strength is a little better comparatively where I sit).
Anyway, I discovered the SMS Time Fix app months ago and have been using it ever since...and it works *almost* flawlessly. I still get the occasional text that somehow slips past the app's resident process, but about 98% of the time it works perfectly and adjusts the timestamp on incoming texts. So I definitely suggest grabbing that and using it for anyone with this problem.

Yeah it gets annoying trying follow a conversation when all the texts are out of order. Now if I could get her to text me the winning powerball numbers.
I'll check out the aosp messaging. Thanks for the tip.

Texts Not Being Sent/Received for Days

So I'm on kush's gingerbread using the default messaging app, and I have had a number of texts not go out for up to three days, and have not received some texts until a day late, but there is no rhyme or reason to it as far as I can tell. 3 out of 4 times I send a text and it immediately goes out. But for that 1 out of 4 it makes a ton of confusion with my friends.
Has anyone had a similar problem? I'd like to know if it's Sprint or Rom related. I've just flashed a sense rom, but ughh... sense is ugly, so I'd like to stay aosp. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
I keep having the same thing happen to me. If I remember right this happened all the time with AT&T. I've asked at least a dozen Sprint and AT&T employees. No one has been any help. The best answer I've gotten is that its the provider's issure, not the phones software/hardware. Best of luck

See the attachement. Last couple days, whenever I receive message, some messages comes with some kind of Korean or Chinese language instead...this is quite annoying hell out of me...

I've been having the same thing. It's really f****** annoying. From my experience the incoming messages are from iPhones only and I believe from at&t carrier. Seems to be longer messages. I signed up for project fi and that will be active as of Monday so well see if it's carrier related then. I've had the issue on pure Nexus, 7.0 stock, and 7.1.1 stock.
Forums online don't yield a definitive solution.
I'm on Nexus 6p, stock 7.1.1, at&t.

well, my issue started after 7.0 upgrade, before that it was not happening. Most of my friends are on iPhone, I do get messages fine with most of friends's iPhone, then 2 of my friends whenever they sent me text messages, some of their messages like that, some messages are not, so it seems like a random situation. Maybe you are right this could be only from iPhone, or somehow related to AT&T, I don't know about like you said, it is f......king annoying!.
I did not Google it (I am sure you did too), so far could not find any good info nor any fix. I even switch to non-google Messenger, issue still there
let me know if any changes after you move to Project Fi...

Only problem is I am not logged in to iMessage anywhere and went as far as going on Apple's site to "deactivate" iMessage to which it said I wasn't active.
I had read somewhere it's happening only with at&t. So well see tomorrow when I switch if it continues.
For what it's worth I just received the same type of message from an AT&T iPhone user. I am also on AT&T
sent from my pixelated Nexus 6p
For those interested, I have since made the switch to project fi and the issue has not happened again. Same phone and setup on the phone.
