How do you remove apps using ADB? - Droid Eris Android Development

I can't seem to figure out how to remove stock apps using adb? Can anyone list the commands needed to do this?

adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/YourApplicationHere.apk

Does this completely remove the app? I mean in particular the listing in the app drawer, as well as in the "Manage Apps" section (if applicable). Also where will app data be stored, if used?
Thanks

yes, completely.
use "adb shell ls -1 /system/app/" to find out the exact name of the app you want to delete, it's caps sensitive.

you can try these 2 programs to remove apps
you should try using android commander or droid explorer. search for them in the forums. they are free and help out a lot.

+ For Droid Explorer: http://de.codeplex.com/ I use this and it is pretty handy. Though you can just be lazy like I usually am and just uninstall apps via Titanium Backup. I haven't tried Android Commander (yet, but maybe I should...) but in interest of being fair, you can find it here: http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-and-Shell/Windows/Android-Commander-93099.shtml and the official site is here, but didn't find it very well laid out (no offense PanPiotr...): http://androidcommander.com/

One other thing if you want to backup the app to your sd use cp /system/apps/appnname /sdcard/backup/appname

Sorry to ask such a noob question, but I just ran Unrevoked 3 and unrevoked forever. Everything seemed to work correctly, but when I try and run androind commander to delete files it says I need root permissions. I saw the superuser permissions icon in my app list, but when I click it nothing happens. Did I miss something?

do you use other apps (setcpu, etc) that require Superuser permissions? any issues with those? if you do have other apps that have SU permissions, then uninstall/reinstall Android Commander... it should then request permission again.
if neither situation applies... use the directions above to remove the Superuser.apk file from /system/app and then go to this thread and download the new Superuser app

You have to have root for this, sorry
But when you do root: com.amazon.mp3.apk
Sorry to noob it up in here, but I have root and have been dying to delete the facebook app. Can you put it in simple terms?
:/ what are the possiblities that brute force su password checks would work? i mean, this thing has to have a password, right?

u need to establish a command line shell. first you need the sdk, which is probably easier to install with eclipse, just so you have everything. there are instructions around here somewhere.
once you have that, go to the sdk/tools folder in a terminal, and type in 'adb shell', and that'll put you into the file system for the phone. cd to the app directory, and if you have root ownership (dangit), you can remove apps or add apps
on your pc, open command prompt, and type in adb uninstall [directory to the application]

Serious unexplainable issue with my rom

Hey, i'll make this brief. Whenever I use an update
Or try and push an apk over to /system/apps
It doesn't stick.
For example I removed the browser.apk, and replaced it with my own (using root manager and adp both) rebooted my phone and I have no browser.apk anylonger cant put one in regardless of how I try...
Another example, while installing and update to HTC_IME.apk (Black theme) It sticks to the phone until i reboot it...
Any advice?
Do a search on the missing apk. Just to be sure.
Not much help huh?
Its like the missing apk completely disappeared... no traces of it.
on your phone try going to the superuser and there should be a + /system/sh push it and it should disappear then try the adb push method

If you were trying to push to /system/APPS That might be a problem. I don't know alot, but if I'm not mistaken, the correct directory for apps is /system/app/
Try this.
Code:
adb remount
adb push browser.apk /system/app/
Also, if you're using A2SD.. it would be /system/sd/app
Let me know if it worked.
Ok well, I checked for root access just to be sure, And of course, I have it lol..
But none of these methods work.
Edit: I mean ive done it before, I dont know what the hell is wrong...
Why not do a simple mount of the sdcard , no adb.
Then copy the file to the card. Use a rooted terminal emulator or even root explorer to copy/move it.
BTW I know that on some systems the ".foo" files ( beginning with a . ) can be invisible and on other systems they can be designated as temporary, I don't know the convention for linux/android.
I do know that I would push a file which has been disappearing and then do a ls -af xxxx on it in a rooted terminal emulator to see it's permissions and "real" name.
^Tried using a rooted file manager to move it..it simply doesnt show up in the tray and when i go back..it's gone like always.

So it's on the sdcard?
Use a terminal emulator and do a
$su
#ls -af filename.
Eh you know what, I'll just wipe and reflash a fresh rom. I'm not putting in anymore effort lol...
A mod can close this now.

Delete T-Mobile Visual VoiceMail App

hey guys, i ve tried deleting the vvm-signed.apk in root explorer, and even though it shows that it was deleted, once i refresh its right there again.
i have stopped the the app from running in the background, and tried again, but still no luck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
You will have to do it with ADB or Terminal Emulator for now. Root Explorer is not allowing rw to /system yet.
What should I change the title of the sticky at the top of the thread to? It says read before posting...

[Q] Can't Remove Copilot Trial in 2.2 Streak Beta

i updated my streak to the 2.2 FROYO update meant for US STreak BETA devices and it comes preinstalled with Copilot Trial which i cant remove with Titanium Backup is there any other way???
First and formost, you must be rooted unless you use adb
*Using a file explorer that has root access. I like SUFBS (SU File Manager & Terminal) myself many people like root explorer tho.
Just mount /system as read/write and delete the apk from /system/app and your done.
or
*using adb
adb remount
adb shell ls /system/app <<*This is just to see a list of all the apps in /system/app. I am unsure of the exact name of the copilot apk. If you know, skip this step.
adb shell rm /system/app/name of file you wish to remove
or
*using terminal
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
cd /system/app
ls <<<*again because I don't know the exact name of the apk file
rm name of the file you wish to remove
FIRSTLY << If that is a word ... I am a "root" virgin .. I used something called z4root . . I don't know if it worked .. I don't know why I even would want to 'root' my streak other than to remove unnecessary programs. In any case I haven't figured out how to do ANYTHING .. The directions below are probably clear to some, but could you or someone else do a "root for dummies" explanation or better yet, do a "adb" for dummies then I don't need to worry if I have rooted it or not. No rush ..

I've not been able to get universal androot to work with 2.2, but z4root definitely has.
if you see an app called "superuser" or "superuser permissions", youre rooted. the app you are looking to delete is /system/app/copilot.apk

What app/technique to remove stock apps after root?

Right now I'm fully unlocked/rooted, but I'm wondering how any of you might have been able to successfully remove/uninstall stock apps? Obviously if this was on my N1 I'd just use TB, but as I'm sure others have found TB is currently unable to detect the apps (unless someone has gotten it to work??).
Thanks, hope someone has a suggestion!
I was able to uninstall them using Better Terminal Emulator. The code is pretty simple:
su
cd /system/app
mv Cordy.apk Cordy.apkb
mv DungeonDefenders.apk DungeonDefenders.apkb
exit
exit
This only changes the file type so the don't show up. If you want true uninstall (irreversible) use:
su
cd /system/app
rm Cordy.apk
rm DungeonDefenders.apk
exit
exit
If you want to know file names in the system apps folder, use:
cd /system/app
ls

Ok, just tried this with another terminal emulator, but after entering "/system/app" I get "permission denied". Though it did show that I had superuser permissions after entering su.
I use root explorer. You just click mount r/w and delete or rename or move just like on your computer

Instead of deleting it just freeze it. If you want it without all the bloatware just flash a rom.
