hi,
i'm form the uk and seriously looking to get one of these phones or anything running android, in the last month i have used 2(3) devices i have had a blackberry 8900 (running beta os) and a htc touch hd (running both android and winmo) the android on my htc hd is very very very very buggy and fails to unlock nearly every time meaning it needs a full re boot but from what i've seen from it i loooooove android and have decided to go for android over an iphone my budget is pretty much any thing under £300 but i am willing to go over, i have looked at both the hero and the magic i am tempted by the magic just because it is cheaper but hero with multi touch is irresistible. but heres my question. i've seen the sprint hero which i believe is chinless and well i prefer the look of that does anyone know where i can get one of them in the uk, or does anyone have any other recommendations of phones i would like? also as you can probably guess i have the beta bug and love using cutstom roms and firmwares i have been using android 2.1 on my htc hd so is this available for this device?
sorry if this question has been asked 1000 times but i couldn't seen to find a search button
The GSM ones all have it.

The Sprint Hero is a CDMA device as opposed to GSM - there are *no* CDMA networks in the UK full stop, so it would never work in the UK.
Note for the pedants - W-CDMA is part of the GSM standard, but W-CDMA <> CDMA, though the technologies are very similar! So, when I say no CDMA networks, I'm referring to networks like Sprint and Verizon in the US.

Dave

thanks for your help mate looks like ill just have to go with the chined hero which i don't like as much.
Hey Slaming,
You will grow to love the chin. It stops the screen from getting scratched when you lie it face down, it makes it more comfortable to hold when texting and makes it curve around your thigh when it's in your pocket.
Do yourself a favour and get the Hero asap!
Cheers,

Ahmen to that, i had the same feelings when i first got the hero, for me it was a choice of Hero or HD2, but the HD2 had WinMo, and though i would like to have a play with WinMo7 when its out, Android secured the deal for the hero, but after a week or so, i changed my mind on the chin, its quite usefull, now the only reasons i hate it is because it dont fit in the accessories that well, but i can over look that, its not a big deal.
I actually prefer the chin. It makes the Back button a little easier to reach when you're holding the phone with one hand, and it's a button you'll use a lot. It also looks pretty cool and a couple of girls have asked me "hey what kinda phone is that" whereas the CDMA Hero just looks like any other phone.
yeah i'm definatly going with a hero now all i have to do is pay of my mum for my mac then save another £350 ish for a new hero which should all be good btw i am 15 so i'm not like 30 and have a loan of my mum lol
edit:
wow nexus one only £10 extra i think i might be going nexus one but is there any diffrence between hero and nexus one bar multi touch because i know multi touch is meant to work now with the new update

As much as I love my Hero, i'd go with the nexus one for its faster processor, dual mics, and beautiful screen. Of course, there are cool new phones coming out all the time, so do yourself a favor and save up some money now so you're ready when the new htc stuff arrives.
chin makes hero stand out from the rest of the mobiles out there!

There's always new stuff coming out, if you wait for the next batch of phones, they'll have announced the next next batch, and you'll never end up buying anything. I think if there's something you like, just get it, and if you really really like something that comes out in the future, just buy that too or sell what you already have and buy the new one.
I am an unlucky guy - I lost my 4 months old Magic 32A last week in the train - and unfortunatly the finder was not honest enough to return it. I was really very happy with it, I don't care too much about gaming so the tech specs were fine - the only thing I was missing was a built in 3.5mm head phone jack.
Now I am looking for a replacement. As it seems to be impossible to buy a new 32A for a reasonable price in Austria, I am looking for a Hero, I could get a brand new one (white) for EUR 299,- So far so good, I don't want to spend more money, but when I started to read some reviews, I noticed that even though it should be technically similar to the 32A, the reception quality was rated quite bad, same for the sound quality. Is this true? Is there anyone who upgraded from 32A to Hero who is not happy with the Hero now? I also loved to flash new ROMs to my 32A, is this also possible with the latest Hero?
Thanks for your help and advises...
At first I was afraid to get any of these devices because of the sound quality. Magic has cut-off base and Hero has uneven frequency response. But I gave Hero a shot and I was pleasantly surprised. While the audio quality is not stunning with my porta pros, it is good. I would suggest trying it first with your fav earphones.
Thanks for your response! Could you please also comment on the 3G reception quality? How comes that all the reviews tell so bad stories, but the majority if the user ratings is quite good? Could it be that all the radio updates have improved the reception?
I think the Hero has indeed massively improved since its original release. There have been many patches and updates, both to the ROM and the radio. However, I still think it's reception is a little bit weak; it's hard to know for sure since I was comparing with people on different networks, but one of them had had my network before and said they usually weren't getting signal blackouts. (We were in the middle of nowhere so any signal was considered good ) All that said, I live in a big city and don't have any problems with it normally.
However, to be honest, I wouldn't buy a Hero now. The Hero was the last of the old generation of Android phones, with a slower processor and smaller screen. It'd be much better to buy one of the new phones like the Nexus One or the HTC Desire, though I don't know how much more that would cost.
i went from a magic (32B) to a hero,the reception is better on my hero and after the problems with downgrading and stuff to get it rooted i love flashing new phone!
Personal opinion i prefer the look of the hero over every other phone but thats just me
if you really want a hero then i suggest looking around for a better deal
300 euros is a lot for a hero, i brought my hero 7 months back for 260
you can pick up a new one on ebay for around 200-230 buy it now
Hey guys,
I wanted the nexus one ever since it first got announced. unforunately for the first month and a half it was exclusive with tmo bands. Come around March, i heard the ATT version was released and i told myself i was gonna get it. I put up my iphone 3gs and to my surprise, nobody bit. they were all trying to trade their iphones for the nexus one att version, just like i was.
fast forward to last week, i bought a htc desire (telus, so it works with att) from a friend. It was a awesome phone, but the nexus one bug was still inside me. Everytime i would see comparison videos against the desire, i would tell myself how pretty and attractive the nexus one is. I couldnt take it anymore, so i went on ebay, searched all day today, and than right when i thought all hope was lost, one ad popped up. "never used, refurbished by HTC Nexus One ATT". I did the BIN which was 425 with 15 dollar shipping. Now selling the desire for 550ish. My question is, with tech advancing so fast these days, did i make a good investment in buying a mint att nexus one for a whopping 425? or should i have waited for the dual core phones from samsung.
be brutally honest guys. and btw, the nexus one is going to share primary phone duties with my iphone 4.
I think it's worth it. The N1 is amazing.

I agree. The N1 is still the best all rounder phone (notification lights, great GPS receiver, perfect size). Unless you play very graphic intensive games on your phone...you'll be just fine without a dual-core processor. I just feel sorry for your poor iPhone 4..you're gonna be so mad at the little things it can't do like long kinetic scrolling in the browser, lack of configurable color LED notifications, flash in the browser, ability to change to different notification sounds....
In my opinion, currently, there is not a single phone that, in overall quality, surpasses the nexus one.
It's just "pure" - no UI additions, no craziness. Just solid, beautiful phone. Oh, and it just feels so good to the touch.
There are phones that has advantages over it here and there.. but overall, N1 is still the king of the hill for me.
It sounds like you made a little money selling the desire and getting the N1 so I guess it wasn't dumb. I personally think the desire is a bit cooler looking than the nexus so I would have kept that. They're basically exactly the same, right?
I really like my nexus one. Recently the battery life has even become better on the stock rom. However if someone was about to buy it now I would tell them not to bother. The touch screen sucks — it can only detect two points and gets confused doing that, it also gets messed up when the phone warms up in my car dock. The screen is also nearly impossible to see in bright daylight.
Not sure what android phone I'd prefer though. Wish there was a galaxy s with an HTC body.

Remember that all the leaked Sammy devices are for T-MOBILE.
AT&T is in the process of switching bed partners from Apple to Microsoft. I count us AT&T users lucky that we got an AT&T banded N1 to begin with. Regardless of what the person with incredibly large hands may say about the Dell phones, the N1 is the best Android phone on AT&T and will be for some time until the next Dev phone makes its way (fingers crossed) to AT&T bands.
Until then, enjoy the BEST custom roms ever made right here at XDA. This phone gets better ever month, and next month when the customized gingerbread roms appear, it will be better again.
I totally agree my friend

Not worth it, IMHO. Once you get it, post back and let us know how you like it, and if YOU feel you got your money's worth.
I think its not worth it. Don't get me wrong it's the best phone I have ever had. All the Sidekicks (1,2,3 and lx etc.), from there to g1 (great classic) and a N900 with a few other phones.
I traded my N900 and got an nexus plus $200 bucks. best deal ever !!!!!!!
I would not sale my nexus it's is the best phone out to me. Perfect build, and feel. Googles baby you just can't beat that.
AND THE BEST COMMUNITY FOR ANY PHONE KNOWN TO MAN.
A CLASSIC THAT NEVER DIES ..... CHUCK NORRIS LOL. j/k
But, if your not happy with your choice there always someone with that same burning feeling you had to get one that will pay 500+.
I have a Mytouch 3G at the moment, it's getting slower and slower everyday and it's driving me crazy. A friend of mine is willing to sell me his HD2 for $175 (comes with original packaging, accessories, etc.) Seems like a good deal to me, but I wanted to know some things before I make my decision.
Is ROM development active (for WinMo and Android?)
How well does Android run on the HD2?
How is the overall speed of the device on WinMo?
Am I getting a good deal?

it is really worth buying though the stoch wm sucks u can still upgrade to energy roms (the one which i preffer) it just sprints with android on nand and wp7 i havent tried ...comming bach to the question ya hd2 is quite stable and fast on energy roms but stock roms are crappy ... get it
I have a htc hd2. I like it very much. Yes you can flash this phone to andriod. It is very to flash it and there are tons if roms.
Rom development seems active.
Decent price.
I've bought 2 off CL here in the Bay Area.
One for $150 and one for $200.
Most of them are listed for much higher than that but I doubt they're selling.
Gotta be careful since many of the HD2s seem to be having hardware issues.
First one I bought is showing signs of impending MB failure which is no doubt why the dude sold it.
Not sure how one would test for that in a short meetup since it's intermittent.
OT: CL is filled with grifters and frauds anymore.
Just following in the footsteps of our politicians and business leaders I suppose.
Sigh.
...
man buy the hd 2... why not one of the best phones on the market...
Buy the HD2 and flash an android rom it will seem like a brand new phone.
Yes it is worth buying, especially for the amount of money you're getting it for.
Hell yes! All HD2s in my area go for 250+ on craigslist, plus this phone is just about the most supported phone with devs.
depending on the condition and cosmetics of the HD2, $175 is a good deal. Im used to android on my Glacier/mytouch 4G, and didnt like the stock win6.5 on the HD2 so I flashed android. ROM development is awesome and there are plenty of options to choose from(android, win6.5, wp7, meego, ubuntu). currently running cm7 rc4 and havent had any issues with the ROM or device
I bought my HD2 T-Mobile half a year ago on e-bay for $210 and it is really the best smart on the market nowadays.
This phone definitely worth buying (T-Mobile version is preferred since it has more memory).

Agree! Just to add that we all hope AT&T and T-Mobile merger never goes through and that way we keep using our HD2s in full 3G capabilities!!!
If we end up going to AT&T we are done with HD2 running 3G
I love my HD2 no doubt. But I'd say no, unless if you can get it for $125 or less. As much as you love a phone, remain objective on what exactly (in concrete terms) the hardware is netting you for the dollar you are forking over.
Hi everybody in this wonderfull forum.
To get straight to the point, I'm planning to get a new phone in the next month.
I've serched alot but found no smartphone has multi-boot abilities like HTC HD2. The HTC HD2 has 'quiet' good hardware in comparison to current smartphones on stores shelves. You all know that already.
The problem is, for an outdated device like that, is it worth buying it new? as i don't trust used smartphones anyway.
The way i see it like this:
Yes, very worthwhile because:
Large nice display;
Multible OS support, live in many worlds;
While WM6.5 is depricated, still very functional specially with HTC sense;
The price is affordable according to the fact that it is old somehow.
No, it's worthless because:
Display is sub-bar to currnet devices display regarding multitouch, 65K colors limitation, and overall quality against S.AMOLED Plus or Retina displays for example;
Multible OS support is great but won't go without issues. At least won't be as fluid as native OS on its own device;
Camera is not decent (no 720p video recording, at least as much as i'm aware of);
The price is affordable yes but i can add up a bit more and get newer phone that is better hardware wise and withought much issues.
I know this question might been asked many times. still i ask as it is time dependent and the answer change over time.
What do you guys recommend me to do?
Buy HTC HD2 and fulfill your needs to 'Have It All' and don't complain about any issues;
The time is over for an outdated device even with multiple OS's possibility, save your money son.
Thank you all in advance,
Ahmed.
Personnally I would go for a newer device. Windows Phone 7 as it stands I don't think is worth having and all the apps are far to expensive. Android is the only thing I would use on this phone. Also after using MIUI (I'm going to say it) I have realised how much I like this Iphone style software, so I might wait around until the new Iphone is out. If not I will be upgrading to something like the new evo 3d.
Having said all that tho I might even hang on to my HD2 for a bit longer as it isn't slow doing anything I throw at it unless I add the new sense onto it.
Hope this helps
Is say buy a re-conditioned hd2 save some money, android feels native to my hd2 its more native than most android devices because it has a bigger team working on it.
Is you want android and you want to save some ££££ get one if you want android and £££££ aren't an issue get the galaxy2
If you don't want android then I don't want to talk to you.... lol

this all comes down to how much you plan on spending for a new phone. also if you wouldn't mind a new to you phone (referb/used) i would check out ebay. you can get them sometimes rather cheap..well under $200. if your due for an upgrade anytime soon then i would get a new device. i will say though, i had the touch pro 2 and then went to a "true" android phone the mytouch 3g slide but i missed all you could do with the tp2 so i sold my mt3gs and bought a hd2 off ebay for $120. i couldn't be happier with this phone. if you wouldnt consider yourself a heavy cell phone user and take the hd2 to its limits i also would say it might be better for you to just buy a new phone. letstalk and wirefly always seem to have good deals on new phones plus if you hunt down promo codes you can save yourself a lot of money. it knocked off $80 on 1 purchase and got a free bluetooth on another.

So to sum it up, you think no need to buy new. and iPhone looks better value in your eyes.

Not a problem. I even found radioshack at times have good sale prices on they're phones. I think all of these will even let you use your upgrade if your due for one. if you do plan even down the road i found it worth wild to try to find those promo codes. just go to your browser..yahoo/google whatever and type in wirefly promo codes or wirefly coupon codes. it will give you tons of sites but if you take a little time like i said it could save you a good amount of money. glad i could be of any help.

Thank you,
Just to make it clear, i currently hold Blackberry Curve 8520 that i want to replace. The next phone would be my main phone for at least 2 years. I live in Egypt so no access to T-Mobile stuff i think.
If i to buy a phone, no way i could change soon. my budget now about 3000 L.E or 500 USD. Still, i know phone prices are higher in Egypt than USA so don't let that 500 USD think of high end devices as i wont be able to get them here with that price.
you could always look for a device that could be used world wide and buy it in the U.S offline from someplace like amazon/ebay etc and have it shipped to Egypt. Im really ignorant to what would be in Egypt and wouldn't as far as stores so im not sure what would and wouldn't work. sorry. i did almost buy the g2 from ebay in the UK because it was a lot cheaper there then here in the US and the seller told me it would work but i bought the hd2 instead so i dont know for sure. i can say the hd2 is a gsm phone so like tmobile or if its unlocked you can use at&t. im sure there are ways to get it on different gsm providers but im clueless of how to flash it over.
Yep that's a problem. I don't know what i buy abroad would work here or not. besides shipping has costs plus government share ... i think it'd be the same if i buy form local stores besides the guarantee that what i buy works.
I'm using a second hand one after smashing my old one, never had an issue you'll pick one up for £160 (15k)

Go for new device. Go for Samsung galaxy s2. But if htc hd2 satisfies ur needs then go for it, no need to go for new devices.
go get it!
i've got one just a month ago, after waiting for financial resources.
i think is the best phone ever!
I was wondering about this too and was told that some devs are working on the Desire HD. Might be something to look into.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=765
the htc hd2 can run ROMs that are desire & desire hd base so thats always a plus but considering that the next phone will be your main phone for two years i really think buying a new phone is the best route for you. also if you ask whats a good phone in a specific model thread everyone will tell you they have the best phone so checking out reviews on sites like cnet.com & testfreaks.com are probably your best option as far as getting an idea on a good phone. i still would check the threads after you have an idea on a couple phones you like just to see what people can do with those phone's that aren't really listed in the specs.
Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts. I red them all and figured out this. i like to play with different OS's. This is what i do on PCs so, i guess if i'm bounded to a single OS (however its greatness), i'd miss having other mobiles with other OS's. The HTC HD2 seems a good deal to me. And its hardware is not that bad afterall.
Thank you again,
i buyed a broken hd2 for 90€ 1 month ago. all i can say it's that it's a wonderful smartphone, no other phone on the planet can run 5/6 OS, android feels like native, and developement is still real active. i didn't feel the need of a faster smartphone.
hardware is really good, photo aren't bad, we have 720p recording with wp7 and soon on android too, screen is ok, multitouch is perfect, it lacks video out, but how many time we need a tv-out? (i used tv-out on my ipod video 2/3 times in 3/4 years just to test it), it lack a frontal camera, but hey! i hate calling, i double hate video calling
so i didn't need anything else
Yep you are totaly right in my opinion. However, i saw many videos on youtube complaining about battery life even on the stock os. i know big screen = battery drain faster. but 6 or 8 hours aren't accepted at all as some videos shows. They also said stuff about lags and the need to restart the phone few times weekly and sometimes daily. Can anybody confirm or deny this claim? I'd appreciate it.
