Good mid-level upgrade from the Wing? - Wing, P4350 General

My Wing is having a few hardware issues. 3 Small blobs of dead moving pixels, less touch sensitivity and the internal ear piece (not the speaker) works intermittently. I want to upgrade to something faster, but still very similar because I love the basic package.
By mid-level I mean in the $50-$150 price range on Ebay. Preferably cheaper legacy devices compatible with a T-Mobile SIM. Essentially something with the slide-out full qwerty keyboard, touch screen and I don't care if it's designed for Android or Windows Mobile. Definitely want something considerably faster if possible. The 200 mhz processor isn't cutting it for me.
What have some of you guys upgraded too?

Athena compared to Raon Digital Everun

I know I'm always on the lookout for the next best thing in mobile (and I do mean mobile) computing.
I'm sure "some" of you are of similar mind.
One day when walking around my favorite computer center I found this little thing http://raondigital.com/fnt_english/
It is truly a real UMPC. 4.8" LCD with up to 1024x576 resolution (native LCD res. 800x480).
The CPU, although slow in Mhz, is very responsive. I was surprised how well it ran when doing
all the usual "on the run" stuff, like emailing, messaging, web-surfing, some document editing
and watching/listening to media. The standard battery gives you 5 hours of good use, not the stated 7 hours.
What I liked most though is that it is a fully functioning mobile computer. You can install any OS on it except Apples OS'.
Dual booting worked well with WinXP Pro and Fedora Core 6. Some functions are unavailable under Linux though.
Another very nice thing was the built-in optical mouse. It worked as well as any other regular mouse.
The keyboard had good responsive keys and even though they are small it is accurate enough so
you can type fairly quick in landscape mode. In portrait mode the qwerty layout makes it awkward.
The screen auto-rotates! Just flip the device and the screen follows, and it follows quickly. There is no lag at all.
The big drawback though is that there is no SIM module built in, and the optional module is not available,
so it falls a bit short compared to the Athenas all in one design. The optional SIM (HSDPA) module will sell for
a hefty US$ 250 apparently.
The device is cheap though. Retail price was only US$ 900 with the top specs (the S60H), without the SSD.
If I didn't have the Athena, I would have bought this one in a heart beat.
Overall IMHO the Athena beats it, but only because it has the SIM part built in and that it is instant on
(the Everun takes ~25 seconds to turn on from hibernation).
I also had a closer look at the Everun and at the OQO Model 2
(http://www.oqo.com/intl/products/modele2/features.html).
It would be great to have a "real" operating system on a pocketable device,
but neither of the above mentionned has the functions of a modern mobile phone: GSM, Camera with Light and GPS.
The Athena i imho a great combination,
because it has all these functions you expect from a modern mobile/smartphone,
and it can still be used as mini-laptop because of the 5" Screen and the comparatively good CPU/RAM/HDD.
In fact there is so many software availabe for WM05/06, that
most of the jobs can be done using different software than on xp/vista/linux/bsd
---
But you could still carry arroud two devices:
One small HSDPA capable smartphone and one of these really small UMPCs.

HTC Touch Dual -Will original Touch owners feel the love?

Okay the new virtual keyboard, contacts app, photos app, home screen and gestures all look great with the Touch Dual, but will original touch owners be able to enjoy this by way of an update? Ive heard nothing. Im a bit pissed actually, I know technology moves fast but the Touch is only 4 months or so old, its still a relatively new device and I feel HTC sold me half a product.
have a look
As quoted on techtree.com
After a successul release in Japan, HTC now plans to officially launch the Touch Dual mobile phone for Europe. The Touch Dual measures 107x55x15.8-mm and weighs 120-grams. It supports WCDMA/HSDPA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access/High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) 2100MHz and GSM/EDGE 900/1800/1900MHz networks. It also features the TouchFLO interface over Windows Mobile 6 Professional and a 2.6" QVGA touch-screen and is powered by a 400MHz Qualcomm MSM7200 processor. It comes with 256MB flash, 128MB RAM, and microSD expansion; Bluetooth 2.0+EDR; 802.11b/g WiFi; HTC ExtUSB (HTC's mini USB 2.0 jack with support for data and audio); and a battery to keep you talking for upto 240 mins on WCDMA and upto 360 minutes on GSM frequencies.

doubtful,.. but hope dies last!
There will be an update for the keyboard.. that's sure ! but for the rest we will see... it seems possible to have everything "software" if the rom are quite the same.. but we can't say this without the touch dual roms.
HTC promises the keyboard for the touch .... but for the rest.. nothing is said yet.
Ofcourse they aint gonna give that to us. They want you to buy the 'new and better' Touch. They already have your money, but they want mmmoooOOORE!
*ahwem*
Anyway, there might be a chance we get it for the Touch. And otherwise I'm sure someone will be able to get it from the Touch Dual .
But looking at how succesful the Touch is in sales, this is the moment for HTC to show how they are in the after sales.
Coming from the s100 and s200 I'm not too confident in all this though, but we'll see!
some of the new features for the dual is surely plus for me. i don't like the smaller screen and bulkiness of the unit compared to the touch. but who knows, when i see it personally on shops, i might get one also to play with.
i think pdaviet or another developer will include this functions to their roms for prophet and old htc touchs.
No wifi
I dont think we will want to wait for HTC to release an update for these features. This sounds like a job for.... someone else. I bet a developer will write a app that will implement these features. Touch Dual looks great, I like the direction HTC is going but not giving this device Wlan is really lame. It's also being released as the O2 XDA Star, but quadband.
No wifi? As far as I can see wifi is one of the features....in previous specs I've seen GPS - which is missing now - which would be for me the only reason to swich
GPS
Do you think GPS is on board, but disabled???

one of the things that made me switch to Htc Touch was wifi. Since the HTC Slide doesnt have wifi, then i dont think its worth the change
The lack of wifi let me down too.
I've been waiting for the new touch with 3.5G, but no wifi is a big no no for me. Let's see if they update the software on the original touch, if they do, I'll buy one, if they don't, I won't buy any of them, I'll just wait. Form factor wise, I think the original touch is cooler
Yep, my ideal phone (at the minute) would be the Touch, but with built-in GPS, a faster processor and larger storage. But processor and storage don't bother me too much (overclocked and a 6GB memory card) so only issue is the lack of built-in GPS - means I have to use a separate bluetooth GPS, which is rather inconvenient at times
David
400mhz
400mhz is awfully fast. the touch is 201, i think most people can get it running close to 300 with overclocking but that just means the new one is gonna scream, nothing better than streaming porn to classmates and coworkers via bluetooth!
seriously though, the tech upgrades alone might be worth picking one up, espcially considering it will probably have the same customization options our touches have now.
i just love my touch and wouldn want any other phone now! it just has everything and i like the fact that the only keys are the ones to make calls...
i dont mine useing the touchkeyboard and the 201MHr are enough i think...
gps doesnt bother me neither... only people with a bad sence of orentation need pgs
Hi
Does anyone know on what network the touch dual is going to be released in the uk?
Is it going to be available on t-mobile? If so when?
Thanx
Nik
hey guys !
watch this rewiew of the htc touch dual
http://smape.com/en/reviews/htc/HTC_Touch_Dual-rev.html
wow i just read the review, it seems the old Touch is better at quite a number for stuff especially graphics and many multimedia.
With the higher price, minus Wifi, and smaller screem, we (with the old touch) shouldnt feel too bad guys

Universal the best of HTC... what could be better?

Well I constanty watch HTC market and see that PDA phones are getting worser from one side and better from the other. NO VGA Screens, low-end processors, very small screens, but better cameras, HSDPA, 802.11g.
Well a flag-model of HTC I would say Kaiser (TyTN II), which has 240x320 screen at 2.8" while Uni has VGA at 3.6", but Kaiser has a slower processor, very good camera and HSDPA.
Why do they do like this? Kaiser is about 2 times more expensive than Universal in my country, and personally I find it worse (I think PDA shouldn't be so small, I have a classic touchless Smartphone to have phone functionality and SIM slot in Uni I use preferably for 3G Internet functionality).
So now, having so large variety, I chose Universal, a phone from about 2 years ago, instead of newer, more expensive but not better (I think) Kaiser.
Why don't they just release a better version of Uni with better camera, better fascia, and the same features as current one? I think HTC takes wrong way turning from business advanced mobile offices to typically show-off things like HTC Touch (which I found personally MUCH better than iPhone anyway)
Some could say that Athena is the thing I look for. Well, it coulda been the one. Anyway 5" display is a little too much for me, but anyway I shall be buying Athena as it gets a little cheaper, because I think it is the good successor of Universal. But why only this one, and so many compact-small-fingernail-size phones? I think that only touchless Smartphones should be as small and compact - because this is their role.
But HTC must not be wrong, and if compact PDAphones are so popular on the market now, they won't be producing something for ones like me.

Successor to Athena ?

Will the new Advantage come out soon ? My friend thinks that they will release a revision early next year, but I honestly think we have about a half a year left till we see anything.

if the universal is anything to go by it could be a few years and waiting !
The real name for the advantage is the X7500 a few months after it was released an even newer version called the X7501 came out for the US market, and this might be what your friend is thinking of ! however newer is not always better, the X7501 is identical in every way except it has LOST 1 of the 2 cameras from the X7500, gained an FM radio (which might be coming to the X7500 anyway as some reckon the hardware exists but has been disabled) and lastly is shiped with windows mobile 6 instead of 5 which is a moot point as you can now just download Win 6 and upgrade your X7500 anyway.
My speculation rests on any successor primarily being an upgrade having WM6.1 and a SSD hard drive of greater capacity.
I would pray for better video performance as well.

My wish lists are:
- No hardware keyboard. Althernatively, have one that slides out, like the ones in Toshiba Protege G920 or Nokia N810.
- No magnet please.
- Uses SSD and at least 32GB
- Use SDHC rather than miniSDHC. SDHC seems to be always ahead in terms of moving into higher capacity.
- WM7
- Camera that takes acceptable pictures indoor. The present one does not work unless you're outdoor.
- 5 MP main camera and a VGA front camera.
- Less weight.
- Maintains 5" screen but reduce the size of the metal frame around the screen, so overall size is reduced.
- Embedded ear piece, so that use of BT headset becomes entirely optional.
- Vibration for phone
- More rounded and thinner profile.
- Infra, so that I can make it my remote control
- FM radio tuner for TMC and musics.
- Built-in TV tuner
- 800x480 resolution - Not too sure about this one, due to concern over software compatibilty issues. Otherwise, the shape would resember a handphone better.
- Faster internet browser, like the one in Nokia N810
- 802.11n for faster connection
- USB 2.0
- Latest bluetooth.
- GPS Assist, ,so that I can get signal inside buildings and tunnels.
Come on HTC, you should be able to make this.

- No magnet please. I agree
- Uses SSD and at least 32GB Can you say 'Uber Expensive?
- Use SDHC rather than miniSDHC. SDHC seems to be always ahead in terms of moving into higher capacity. Deffo. I really can't see how HTC is saving that much space by using miniSDHC
- WM7 Yay!!!
- Camera that takes acceptable pictures indoor. The present one does not work unless you're outdoor. Agree 100% .. for something that's being marketed as an 'All in one device' the camer really sucks
- 5 MP main camera and a VGA front camera.
- Less weight. If possible, but considering the extra features everyone wants etc??
- Maintains 5" screen but reduce the size of the metal frame around the screen, so overall size is reduced.
- Embedded ear piece, so that use of BT headset becomes entirely optional.
- Vibration for phone You have no idea how much I miss a vibrating alert on my phone now lol
- More rounded and thinner profile. The shape of the Athen wors really well, provided you use the stock keyboard, otherwise it feels really weird to hold, so yeah, I'd agree
- Infra, so that I can make it my remote controlThis should have been in our current devices, sure, it may be old tech, but there are still so many uses for it
- FM radio tuner for TMC and musics.Aye
- Built-in TV tuner AYE!!!
- 800x480 resolution - Not too sure about this one, due to concern over software compatibilty issues. Otherwise, the shape would resember a handphone better. Provided there weren't any issues, then yes, however I'm quite happy with VGA
- Faster internet browser, like the one in Nokia N810 Yup, although I think we'll have to rely on 3rd party for this
- 802.11n for faster connection Yup
- USB 2.0 Yup, with support for a wider range of external HDDs
- Latest bluetooth. Not a big user of BT, so I cant comment
- GPS Assist, ,so that I can get signal inside buildings and tunnels. I think GPS signal on this device sucks all over, anything to improve it would be great
Come on HTC, you should be able to make this.

Just my opinion
total agreement from me with regards to the slide out keyboard. i have seen a device for the pc that projects the display of a keyboard onto what ever you place the device onto, sort of like a laser projection, that would be sweet but your battery would die after one text message or email!!
The size has always been an issue for me, but we knew that it was a monster/powerhouse/umpc/ugly brick shaped phone when we purchased the athena/ameo!!!
as for the camera, dudes, if you have money to throw around at the advanced phones...... buy a digi cam. C'mon, its a phone! Having said all this, im gonna confuse you all by saying, i want the new htc sprint with vista/touchflo. hehehe
I mentioned this in some other thread, but, here it goes again
http://www.pocketables.net/2008/01/htc-advantage-r.html
The ATHENA wish list
Dear HTC,
1) Give us the capability to use our ATHENA WITHOUT speakerphone always ON, we want to put it close to the ear, you know BT is a technology always in BETA testing!
2) Turn the RADIO feature ON (we know it has the hardware capability)
3) FIX the REALVGA issues, give us the power to run programs at different DPI resolution, we know, REALVGA comes from you!
You, dear HTC, have lost the first place in Windows Mobile standard market, improve or die is the lesson, we love your devices, but... 9150 is coming

Couldn't buy an AT&T / HTC Pure today

Per another thread, I simply walked into my local AT&T store (which was pretty full, seemed to me) and when approached by a sales person, asked if they had the Pure for sale.
Was told that...
1) They aren't selling the Pure until the 4th (aka TOMORROW).
2) They only have about 2 in-stock.
3) They haven't been allowed to turn one on, and have no dummy units or any material I can look at to try and gauge my interest.
In the end, I left pretty disappointed. I mean, if I knew this device was good enough to satify me about the same as an HD2, I'd be happy to be there tomorrow at 9am and pick one up before my Seahawks get KILLED by the Colts. But I really don't know how much better THIS phone is than my Touch Cruise, and therefore I'm pretty disappointed by driving out to find out NOTHING.
Think I'll go play Madden, since the Huskies were getting beat by Notre Dame last I checked...
If you have a Fuze, I'd wait for the next upgrade cycle. The screen isn't that much larger. It's not faster. The build uses the same materials as the Fuze. On the other hand, it is running WM6.5, Build 21849.5.0.63 and the camera has a vastly improved white balance.
I stopped by not realising that the "new" phones were actually in the store this early (silly me) and checked out a working Pure... after putzing around with a Tilt 6.1 for the last couple of years and with this month seening the end of my contract, I was pretty impressed with it -- as far as that goes. Accelerometer seemed to work OK for some things; looked at the box and if I recall it had a 528 MHz processor (as of right now, still can't find any info on it on HTC's website - please someone correct me if I'm wrong), screen seems clearer to me (but of course you must realise I've been used to a Tilt for the last 2 years). The only thing I was unimpressed with (with the limited putzing I was able to do with the live demo model) was the on-screen "full QWERTY" keyboard which was a bit too small for my fingers. I tested in a Word document, tried to swing the phone sideways to see if it would move the document view and the keyboard to a landscape -- it didn't, but it DID do the automatic screen adjust in the Opera Browser which was preinstalled(thank God this model doesn't rely on the old PIE) But though I missed the slide-out keyboard on this unit, and realising that perhaps all phones will eventually go with virtual QWERTYs... I considered this to NOT be a deal-breaker for me tomorrow when they go on sale officially, since there are lots of free and low-cost keyboard apps out there that would make a virtual keyboard big enough to type on with my fat-ol' fingers.
And yes, it is a 6.5 device, I believe the box said 512MB ROM & 284 (at least I think) of RAM... seems pretty roomy for my taste, esp. given my 16GB micro-SD card (which I couldn't find the slot for on this device -- GASP! it better have one!) but then again -- my 10-year-old daughter was tugging at me trying to convince me to buy her one of the Samsung phones as her first phone for her birthday later this month -- so what with all that and one salesman beating my ear whilst the other was on a futile quest for information on this phone on their computer, I didn't get a full stem-to-stern look at the thing... but what I did see... I like.

i just got one here in NY Staten Island 2 hours ago but they only have 1 which i already bought.
Thanks to all for your replies. Still about an hour and 20 minutes before my local store opens, but as I still haven't held it in my hands, I'm not going to go rushing in for one.
Couple questions for anyone who knows...
1) Resistive vs Capacitive... is this the difference between being able to do multi-touch or not? I'm sure it's more than that, but I'm not clear what the true differences on the Leo screen and this screen are.
2) Video on the Diamond2 - I'm sure it's better than on my Touch Cruise, which is actually good with CorePlayer and properly converted video. But if YouTube does better quality on the Diamond2 that would be nice.
The better camera would be nice, but it's no deal breaker for me. Overall, I'm wondering if the newer opera and higher res screen will make my browsing closer to an iPhone... or if I should just get sucked into an Apple 3GS like most of the world...

Capacitive screens are very sensitve to finger touch, they don't react to styluses (styli?) or finger nails, they're also less precise. Resistive requires pressure to work, so you can use fingernails or a stylus. It's more precise, but no resistive screen on the market supports multi-touch. So no pinch and zoom on Opera.
2) Video on the Diamond2 - I'm sure it's better than on my Touch Cruise, which is actually good with CorePlayer and properly converted video. But if YouTube does better quality on the Diamond2 that would be nice.

The Pure/TD2 has an MSM7200 processor and chipset. It is essentially the same guts as the Touch Pro/Cruise/Tilt 1/Kaiser, with a higher resolution screen. Performance should be pretty close to identical.

The Opera build included in the stock Pure ROM (17658) is not as fast as Safari, but it does a great job of rendring web pages.
Wouldn't sell without contract
NYC has a lot of the PURE around but no stores are willing to sell only the phone. Well, at least about the 10 that I called/visited said so.

I have a Fuze and getting getting the crave. I like the bigger screen but I'm not sold on the onscreen keyboard for texting. While I use the onscreen keyboard on my Fuze in Portrait one-handed... the physical keyboard is nice. I like having the keyboard but I hate having the phone feel like a brick.
The sad note is that HTC didn't really upgrade anything over the original Diamond/TouchPro internally. It will still be just as snappy/sluggish as my Fuze. The smaller battery also has me worried.
And how is the microphone? I ask because my Fuze picks up background noise like no other. I'll be in my car with the windows up, relatively quiet... and people say it sounds like a vaccum cleaner. It really sucks. There is no way I could think about upgrading to a phone that has the same problem.
Corporate stores are sellin Pure for $500, which with tax is over $200 than what attwireless is selling. Are there really stupid enough people who buy at such a higher price?
