I think i may have come across something of a program corrupting memory cards. Twice in less than a week , I have had an SD card get corrupted by the Eco. Both times I was running the program wardrive. Both times, the program was either running or had not completely shut down before I did a restart or shutdown. When the phone came back up, the card was reported being corrupted. This time, I have everything backed up at home.
Could someone verify this so I can make sure it isn't just me and I will tell the programmer of that app about that.
The test is very simple. FIRST, BACK UP ALL YOUR CONTENTS OF YOUR CARD TO A SAFE PLACE BECAUSE THIS COULD BORK YOUR CARD (A FORMAT WILL FIX IT I THINK). Install the app wardrive. Turn on your WiFi and go and fire up the program and go for a walk or drive with the program running. While its collecting data, shut down the phone or restart it if you have that app to reboot with. If what I suspect is true, the card will be corrupt when the phone is restarted. I tried rescuing the info on it but it didn't work. Post your findings here. I have a sandisk 16gb card BTW. If you format the card and copy your backed up stuff back to the card, everything "should" be okay then, although I am not promising any success. Try at your own risk, but I would appreciate if someone else could verify this.

I don't know if it makes any difference but I'm running Damage Control 3.2.3 rom

Testing now. Ive used wardrive several times without it affecting my sd card. but lets see......
Booting up now......
Nope. Everything is still working just fine on my SD card. Guess its just you. LOL
Im also on DC 3.2.3 FYI.
Another thing I forgot to mention that might make a difference is that before, I had maybe 6.5gb of stuff on the card. About 5.6 of that was around 4000 apk files. Maybe having that many files had something to do with it. What I'm thinking is that while the or a program was writing to the card, the system shut down before it finished writing the file(s) or updating the file allocation table/list on the card. Windows did that stuff all the time if power was lost while the harddrive was accessing. When you rebooted, you got the bsod or it wanted to run check disk. Any other theories?
I'm trying this experiment on the same card but empty and cannot recreate the problem. I will have to throw all the files back on when I get home later and see if that has something to do with it.
One last note:
Last night I spent well over an hour formatting this card with xp in fat32, just like the phone does. I did a full format, not quick. The phone seems to just be a quick format.

Im having a problem where my nandroid has stopped working. When i run it in recovery, it scrolls through all the dots and tells me my backup is complete. However, it only goes maybe 2 or 3 rows before saying it is successful.
When I look in the SD card nandroid folder, the nandroid backup is missing files. My most recent backup only has:
boot.img
misc.img
recovery.img
system.img
I just got a new 16GB SD card that I put in, and thats when I noticed it not working anymore.
Anyone had any issues like this before? Or have any suggestions. I'm running Recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2 and currently using DarchLegend v5.0.5. I appreciate any help.
FYI, this is what I get when I run the nandroid mobile shell

Try updating to AmonRA 1.6.2 recovery.
Re: Nandroid stopped working?
i've done that, sorry should have mentioned what i've tried, my thought is that it has something to do with the new SD card. I definitely have enough space, and I definitely have enough battery power (have tried it both plugged in and not plugged in fully charged, etc)
when i first got it i first for matted it fat32 on the computer, then wiped and partitioned it via Recovery, this fixed some damaged card errors i was having, but now I can't nandroid backup, perhaps i missed a step somewhere

bump again
hate to keep bumping but threads seem go so fast.
I have reformated card a couple time, to no avail, as well as switch between multiple ROMs (DarchLegend, RegawMOD, DarchDroid), and I get the same issue.
I'm sure it is something simple when I switched SD cards, but until I can figure it out, I am kind of dead in the water
Have you tried formatting the card from in recovery. If you don;t use A2SD then you can set Swap and Fat to 0. Then try to nandroid.
Tried it, no dice...
Ok, for what its worth, I SEEM to have figured it out, for anyone else that may stumble upon this issue.
I believe it was an issue between the formatting the SD Card FAT32 on my Windows 7 machine (and for that matter, it didnt work on the Hero itself). I used the build in windows format capability, as well as various partitioning programs, and my thought is none of those actually formatted it correctly. I had access to a Windows XP machine today, and formatted FAT32 on the SD card, and I appear to be able to nandroid again.

Yeah I got a 8g card that seems to be worthless now. And for some stupid reason that was one of the things I tried, formatting on my windows vista. That seem to do it in for good. It won't function on the hero well, and it practically shuts my computer down, now.
Well its my own fault but I thought maybe I can save some others the heartbreak of a damaged sdcard. We all know that wp7 reformats the sdcard when installing the first time. Also if you switch sdcards while phone is off or anything and then boot into wp7 you will fry your card.
I flashed wp7 just to see what it was all about blah blah. Decided it was time to return to android. Blah blah i stuck my android sdcard with all my backups, pics, work stuff back into the phone and rebooted to flash android back through nand . Somehow i let it boot back to wp7 instead of nand and it killed my card. Lesson learned. Keep your sdcard 10ft. away from Wp7 at all times. Don't switch out your wp7 sdcard till you are actually back in android just to be safe. Oh and backup your sdcard!!!!!!!!

If for any reason your sd card becomes corrupt just use this program: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool.shtml
lol, hard lesson but it was obviously worth it as you wont be stupid enough to do something like that again, especially when it clearly states in read-me that card is partitioned etc.
Thank you for this post, I was not aware that something like this can happen, and now I'll take precautions so it wont happen to me.

Did you actually read the second paragraph????? Yes I read the read-me. That's how I knew to use a spare sdcard. Plus the read me states that the card will be reformatted upon first boot and if removed the phone will lose all userdata. Had nothing to do with stupidity. Has to do with a pregnant wife needing my attention and me letting go of the power button to soon. Stuff happens.
Now to be more helpful than negative......unlike the athiest with his stellar "I don't believe in God, but I sure think I am a God of android" bad attitude.
The sdcard wasn't reformatted. It was showing as being damaged. I was able to find a simple, free data recovery program that was able to recover most of the card.
I see this may happen often because after using wp7 you may be in a haste to flash back to android (wp7 is just sad IMO). Just wait till you are booted into android just to be safe. Also while fixing my mess up yesterday I stumbled on another problem.
Recently read a post about partitioning the sdcard for optimum use when ram builds came out. System -ext. for data and another for cache. I picked up this sdcard off the desk after finding my main card had been damaged. Then did a task 29, flashed magdlr, and Mdj's gingerbread. Inserted the sdcard and did first boot. To my surprise I had all of my apps pre loaded and I hadn't logged into Google yet so I knew it wasn't Google data backup that loaded my apps. So I went into root explorer and saw the ext. and then realized which sdcard I had slid in. There for a second I thought "WOW me and mdj have the exact same apps". Blah blah reformatted card and reflashed gingerbread. Done.

Myself, and a few others, have manged to reformat the SD card in a single button press by puttinf it into a digital camera and using the format option. It shows the card as 200mb but after the lighting quick format reads the correct size...voila.
Thanks...good to know. I will try it today. It took 8 hrs. for that application to fix my sdcard so that the computer could read it. Though my phone still wont read it. Out of 3700 pics I recovered 98% of them, all of my work files and android apps. Got real lucky. Took another hour after that for the computer to copy them to another 16gb card. Made for a long night. Now when I get home I can reformat the bad card and use as backup.

Do you have any suggestions for a good data recovery application. The one I used was free and easy to use but cost me about 4 he's of sleep. I know a lot of ppl experience sdcard corruption frequently maybe we can get it into a sticky that ppl will find before they reformat. I did not know till last night that it was possible to recover drives this way. I almost erased all of my families Christmas pics. PREGNANT wives don't like that kind of news. OF COURSE THE BEST WAY IS TO BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP

okay, i've tried using minitools partition to try and delete the 200mb partition and then recreate the entire 16gb that is my microsd as well as sdformatter with full (erase as well as overwrite) with size adjustment on but the problem is that i can only see one partition, the 200mb partition, i can't even see the the second partition or whatever that wp7 created. I even tried doing the low-level-format but it's still stuck at 200mb!
anyone have any other solutions?

Just download and install SD Formatter 3 on your pc, run the program and in the options change FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT to ON and leave it at QUICK FORMAT. Dont worry that it only shows the 200MB partition it will reformat your card and bring back its full size. It worked everytime for me.
Mark.
i tried that through android usb storage mode but it would keep on going back to 200mb. the only way that using sdformatter proved to be successful was to connect the microsd through magldr and not through android
thanks for the tip though!
google samsung sd formatter. Format as FAT32 with overwrite enabled. It fixed my bad card when i returned to android
By the way, you have to mount the card via MAGLDR as it wont mount in android (it is detected in windows this way)

have you bought the sd card from ebay? it might be fake. It happened to me too, bought a 32gb microsd, for about 20 euro, knew it was fake, but i just tried my luck. When the package arrived it got myself some brand new earrings, probably worth 2 bucks.
i transfered all my data to my new sd card. shut the phone off and put the new card in. booted it. i got a text. tried to reply and wouldnt let me. phone shut off and wouldnt boot. i went into recovery to clear cache and dalvik cache. rebooted and now its like its on a fresh new rom no apps no nothin. but its EXTREMLY SLOW now. 5x slower than my htc hero. and its freaking out.
i tried nand back up.. nothin. i tried everything.. wont stay on long enough for ruu.
so any ideas to help me fix this.
I usually format the new sdcard with the phone. Then I copy onto it, except for lost.dir which does not get over written.
Use the settings to unmount the sdcard, then reformat it. Copy from the old sdcard on to the new. Hopefully that will do.
ok i will try that in a sec. thank you
Did you get one of those cheap memory cards from China? If so, that may be the problem. I tried one of those cheap SD cards when I first got my phone and it worked all kinda ways messed up while it was in there. Try putting the old card back in. If you see it works with no problems, then it's your SD card.
the phone is still glitched out even with the old card
EDITwilly900wonka after i did that process it worked. probably not a smart move copying the file over as well. i just did a exact copy with all the files. nand .androidsecure and everything else on the lines of movies music and photos

Weird. Try wiping cache and dalvik cache,. If not, hopefully you have a NAND backed up that you can restore to.
Once you get your EVO back up and running I would advise you to run AVG Anti-Virus to speed your phone back up. Also install a custom ROM, this will most defiantly speed up your EVO.

i been using custom roms. but i was on mikfroyo then myn warm. then MIUI which i loved but it wont accept it now. so im off to something new. i tried koin elite. but that sucked for me...
I made the mistake of putting a blank SD card into my phone then formatting it with the phone. I lost all my apps etc. Even transferring all the files back to the phone didn't fix it. What I found you should do is boot into recovery before you ever boot into the phone. Then format and create the needed partitions, then mount the SD card while in recovery and move the files to the card. Wipe cache and dalvik and reboot. Phone acts like you never changed the card. From my experience its the most problem free method

Whats the best SD card for the EVO?
Say I want a 16GB card.
Does the evo support class 6 and 10?
Can I then use the MikFroyo A2sd? Or do I need to start with a wipe and a fresh install of MikFroyo?

it sucks. but oh well.
Nandroid FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
had that problem on my first 2 card switches the realized that what works for me is taking old card out, putting new one in(i do not open anything)just go to format the sd card then put the old one back in plug phone to pc in usb drive and opend my pc hit folder properties on my phones drive and select view hidden files. then copy all the info into my pc. then close all open windows on pc and change my phone back to charging only then unplug turn off the phone and remove and replace sd card with new one, turn on again plug to pc in usb drive and copy all the files i copied into the new sd card and hit replace on all the repeated folders. that method works flawlessly for me every time
So ive been I having the problem for a few days. It was all good just a week ago. Then suddenly my music player and the gallery containg my photos were unable to find the media on the sd card. But I can play or view the media by manually looking thru file explorer. When it first started to happen i could power cycle my phone and it would go back normal. Does anyone know how to solve this problem with out either getting a new sd card or reformating. Its been sometime since i installed the android nand and dont have the patients to install it again....
I suspect the SD card, if you have a card reader, remove the sd card (remove the battery first of course) and then copy/past all your stuff from each partition to the computer.
Download EASEUS free version and note the partition types and sizes then delet all partitions format and readd the partitions and their contents
If it was me I would just delete all partitions after saving my important photos/music then reformat.
Task 29 and reinstall the rom, only takes a few minutes, if you have done it once or twice already
Then copy the stuff back
Thanks bruh! I thank ima do that. Or I just found my wife's old memory card. Ill just swap it out she wouldn't know the difference... but definitely going try your way first...

Okay so I got a new 32gb sd card in, and I'm trying to get converted over to it but I am having some problems.
I mounted my original 16gb card to my PC and copied EVERYTHING over to a folder on the PC. I then attached my 32gb card, formatted it fat32 and copied everything from the folder I made that had the contents of my 16gb card in it.
I booted it and am getting all kinds of FC's - from Swype, to Gmail, etc. I can't even use Gmail actually. So I put my original 16gb card back in place, with nothing done to the files on the card, and I am getting the same FC's on it.
Running ICS SFR 1.2 and Genocide 2.0 if that info is needed. Can anyone give me ideas on how to get this sorted? Thanks!
Journaling on or off? If off, It could just be coincidental that it corrupted as you were switching cards.

I got my original card working mostly okay by going into CWM and restoring system settings. I had done a full backup on 9/27.
The only error I occasionally get is for google framework or some such. At least the phone is usable for now. I will try again tomorrow to convert to the new card.

Thanks - I think I figured it out on my own with the CWM restore.
With the original card in the phone, I booted into CWM, into backup and restore, then advanced backup, then I choose my most recent full CWM backup file, then "restore system"
That got rid of all the Gmail and Swype errors that were the most persistent and obnoxious. I was still getting the google process error once after every reboot. I re-formatted my 32gb sd card and loaded the files I copied onto my PC onto it. It then booted up and only gives the google process error once like the stock card was doing.
I went back into CWM and chose "restore system" again and after it rebooted I get that google process error rarely. Seems like the first time I go into certain apps, but not all of them. Seems like I'm good to go now with a 32gb card in.
Thanks for the replies guys
Edit: Just did the sd card upgrade for my wife's phone. Zero errors at all lol. Works flawlessly for her and we have the same exact ROM, rooted, and Kernel. Oh well, at least that upgrade was easy!
