switching to verizon with evo - EVO 4G General

Hi
I'm thinking about switching to Verizon wireless, but I want to take my evo with me. Will it be possible to do? What are the cons of doing so?
Any help with be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried using the EVDO hack to get Verizon coverage without actually making the switch?

Why would u jump to the verizon
sent with my evo from a secret place

No, it's not possible. Please search the forums next time.
While the EVO may be on the same type of network as Verizon, they will never activate the phone on Verizon.

Man the recent threads from people who have 10th posts or less are getting sad!

There is nothing preventing you from taking the EVO with you to Verizon. However, you won't be able to call or text, and all of your data must be through wifi.

That caused me to slowly roll into a nice belly laugh. Well stated.

Haha, that was good.
They should make it so your first 25 posts can only be posted in the Q&A forum with voting, so if you post too many really stupid questions that have been answered a hundred times before, people can vote you off the forums...

That is just plain unfair to those of us who have any idea what we are talking about or actually know what we can and can't do with our phones but haven't been members as long as some others or have a lot keeping them occupied and can't have a high post count

No because people like that are the minority. Most of the people with 25 posts or less ask questions that can be found with a SEARCH or have been posted in the Q and A subforum.
Besides...what are you complaining or arguing about? You have 40 posts, well above the limit that he was talking about.

To the OP, why would you want to? Sprint has a roaming agreement w/ Verizon, and Sprint is a LOT cheaper! And this:

I had less than 25 not very long ago but something doesn't have to affect me to think it is unfair and my problem is trying to assume that everyone who has been a member for a shorter time is a "n00b" or doesn't know how to use a forum or follow guidelines

Well that is why there are threads specifically for "how to search" the forums. If you can think of the question...then search for it first. If you can't find your answer, then ask the question. It's not that hard, yet when people get told to search, they throw a fit and call members rude and mean.
Life isn't easy or fair. Sometimes you have to get chewed up and spit out to learn.

if you dont wanna help, then keep the useless comments to yourself. im so sick of all of the wannabe moderators on here lately.

yes, you can, although it's a little bit 'gray'.
get a phone with verizon. get a plan with verizon. google esn switching. change the evo's esn to match that of your new phone. done. it won't have 4g. otherwise should be fine.
although, esn switching is frowned upon, but that is for setting up multiple devices with the same esn. it's a gray area otherwise. if you swap the esn out, make sure you DO NOT USE the other device. you would be in direct violation of something, i'm sure.

i laughed too I tried the same thing when I got the I/O Evo and it can not be done you have to have someone inside verizon add the phone to there network which they will not do no matter what you ask I have an Insider at Verizon and he said he couldnt/wouldnt do it it would get back to him and he would get fired so i dont know what to tell ya

That isn't the end of it actually. Only the tip of the iceberg.
In addition to the above you also need to change all the variables in the device to match those of verizon. This means your data log in, dns servers, PRL, mms/sms information etc..
It is a very detailed process that generally nets you a device that is missing something, usually mms or data. It can be done but it isn't easy nor would I recommend anyone doing it.
You also DO NOT need to clone another devices ESN. While that would work Verizon will activate a device that isn't made for their network. It takes getting the correct rep on the line high enough in the food chain. You can also send the device in and let their techs do the work but it takes upwards of a month and YMMV on that route as well.

those aren't that hard to edit, if you know the config. just a matter of going into the data edit and changing the addresses. changing the esn is the more intricate bit, because you need extra software to read and manipulate them. if you can change the esn, the other stuff can be done on the phone iteself.

really? i always thought the ESN part was the easiest. the other stuff seems to be more tedious and troublesome!

Sprint Employees view of XDA Devs

Just a tidbit of interest here concerning the koolaid that Sprint employees are trying to push. The Sprint employee "mykey" on Sprints Community Forums has all but called the knowledgable and hard working devs here liars concerning the CDMA kernal. Some of you might at least get a laugh out of it! A Sprint idiot at his best! community.sprint.com/baw/thread/25921?start=15&tstart=0&reqsorting=dec
wow thats epic.
ignorance is bliss, "I'm an employee, I know better than anyone else because I have the 'inside scoop'." Except for the slight detail that he's completely wrong about the source code being released, in a sense is is released, but only partially as it is lacking the cdma specific portions.
Edit: He really is cocky and ignorant. Oh well, not worth my time arguing on the internets with a douche-nozzle like that.
That guy is an absolute clown. I'm sure he knows he's wrong by now, but won't be admitting it or apologizing to the folks in that thread.
Being an employee means nothing when it comes to information. I myself am a sprint employee. Sadly many of our customers have more information than what we are privvied. We are usually made aware of upcoming changes about 1 to 2 weeks before they actually go into effect, and most of which has already been leaked or confirmed online prior to it ever hitting us.
edit :found it
this guy is just a douchebag that is probably a "technition at a sprint store so he thinks that he is just the man.
I will be the first to admit that I had some reservations about following advice on this forum. However when I had a problem with my hero (see this thread) I spent an hour on the phone with sprints "advanced tech support" and they couldnt figure it out. I put the thread up and 40 minutes later the first post that replied nailed the problem right off the bat.
I learned my lesson, post here first and then if no one here can help, might as well get a new phone.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I work with everything now, not just phones. I'm tired of speaking to (no offense)people in countries such as India that I can barely understand, and to top off the matter, don't really no what I'm talking about.
It looks like they don't want us posting on the subject anymore:

Sorry folks - this thread has generated more than enough abuse reports for personal attacks and more.
I'm closing the thread.
If you chose to take the GPL issue up again, please keep your posts professional, courteous and if you work for Sprint remember that you are representing the company when you post - even off hours.

I wasn't abusive...much.

As an employee, I can honestly say, even during some of my calls, I refer to this forum for answers. xda for android and ppcgeeks for winmo is pretty much biblical when it comes for hard facts, knowledge, and know how. I just had to say that. I don't post much, but I've been able to a lot of tough questions based on the answers found here.

Evo on verizon towers hack?

Anyone have a link to the guide that shows you how to put verizon PRLs on Evo to use verizon towers?
my co-worker did it once on my phone, but when my phone was replaced, it took me till last night to get it rooted again.
It was a flash this and when u are ready dial a number and you get a "welcome to Verizon" or something like that. Not sure.
Thanks guys.

Well, you can use the App Roam Control. Or there is a post about how to do this in the Dev section. Just simply use the "Search" bar.

i have heard about this roam control, but haven't investigated it, we used something else earlier.
I try to use the search bar, but i get so much crap results it sucks to sift through, so i figured i could post and wait for someone to see it and say, "oh yeah, that's over here:..." I even tried to search "verizon" but i get tons of themes and roms and stuff that are no way related to Verizon. XDAs one downfall.

that does help. i did not know about tecknowfile. The search i was referring to was the "search this forum" within XDA. I love XDA, the people here are the best, the leaders in android development, the nicest and most quick to help group on any kind of forum i have ever found. I am sorry for sounding like i was insulting XDA, i just meant i have trouble with their "search this forum" search and don't get the best results, probably due to bad tags or off topic responses within those threads.
Sorry for the negativity and thank you for your help.
From what I understand Roam Control will only force you into 1x, not so much 3G... so if you're looking to replace crappy data speeds you're out of luck there. I've been too wimpy to try the PRL hack though.
roam control is great but limited, it can force your connection to roaming but it won't connect to verizon the same way as the prl hack, I've tested it. the prl hack is far faster speeds, with roam control I would get 15~100kpbs, with prl hack I would get 600~2000kbps in the same spot
How much data did you push? What really makes me paranoid about the PRL hack is the amount of data I may push if I switch over. I push 5-6 GB a month, and it seems like that would set off red flags all over Sprint HQ, haha.
I read up on this just recently and decided to go with Roam Control instead of the PRL hack. The PRL hack is tedious to activate/deactivate, and I only need it while I'm at work (signal is fine everywhere else).
For me, the limited speeds of Roam Control was worth the convenience of one click activate/deactivate.
Yea if voice is your concern, roam control would work fine. I know a lot of people though who would love getting access to Verizon's 3G network.

Question about Bad esn

I ordered one of these but it has a bad esn.
Is there anyway to fix this ?
I heard something about a program DFS, will that help ?
the only way to activate on sprint would be to swap esn but that is a no no. The only thing bad esn phones are good for is parts and cricket.
Aww.. but will that dfs program help unlocking it or whatever ?

You probably won't get a whole lot of info here in a general forum, considering what you're asking is, I'm fairly certain, illegal. Cloning ESN numbers or anything like that won't get you a ton of responses. If you search the General thread, I think there was talk of this before and there was a member who said to PM him. I would suggest going that route.

No problem. The thing with a bad ESN is the previous owner just has bad standing with Sprint, at least, I think that's usually the case. Depending on how much you got the phone for, you might be able to just pay their bill (usually the case) if it's not too much and just add that to the price of the phone. Of course, if you paid too much for a phone with a bad ESN, then you're kind of SOL.
FWIW, I paid $135 for a couple month old Epic with a good ESN just a few weeks ago. Phone was in great shape.
EDIT: If it's a bad ESN because the phone was stolen, then that could get a sticky situation as well...

I don't know from personal experience, but from what I've heard, yes. I think you can also go to Boost, but I'm not certain on that either. I know there are guides around here about how to flash your Epic to Cricket, but I'm pretty sure Boost uses Sprint towers too, so you should be able to flash to their network too I would think.

You can flash it to any prepaid mobile network really but not boost they use esn's as well if you have a bad esn with sprint they can track that.

The Epics activated on Cricket you see for sale on craigslist are largely stolen/reported lost Sprint devices. Galaxy S and S2 are very easy to "repair," hence the availability.
There's no sense in mentioning the legal or moral considerations when the fact remains that this discussion is very much against the forum rules (and when it may not be, the moderator team is quick to shut it down... rightfully so). With that said, take it to Google and off XDA.. that would probably be my best advice.

I do, but PRL is only 1/10th of the problem. and the EVO 4G is completely different and the memory address on that would be a different location on this phone.

I've been here long enough to know what threads get trolled, and which do not.
I'm trying to do the same thing except I'm trying to switch to straight talk and I have a sph-d720. I need to know if there's a certain sim card I need to get from straight talk?
I've flashed one to Page Plus (a prepaid network that uses Verizon), and it works fine.
I used these instructions: http://bubhutsa.blogspot.com/2011/11/nexus-s-4g-pageplus.html
I initially had an issue getting it to activate because the esn was incorrectly printed under the battery, but customer support recommended I try the esn number in the status menu, which worked. Other than that, it wasn't all too difficult if you are comfortable modifying your phone.
You would probably be happy with a used gsm nexus s and prepaid TMobile

I'm not sure. What is the $50 plan you are talking about? I am talking about the plans at pagepluscellular.com.

*Sprint* Galaxy Note Edge our own forum request

Why this hasnt been done i dont know why... but i know from my standpoint I've been reluctant to root because ive had to dig and dig through other peoples posts for their phones (not sprint ) to find information . What few sprint information there is seems to be hidden in pages of posts for other phones.. Ive seen sprint users get snubbed when they ask questions ( rightfully so I feel the same way when other people are asking about K phones in the few sprints threads we have) since the tmobile dev is really taking off i think we are way past due for our own section ..to much different information out there for the different models now... lets but our requests here for a new section

Couldn't agree with the OP more. Not sure why a simple task has to become such a production.
Exactly.... this is why my phone is yet to be rooted

I read it...i dont understand the point of your reply...As stated in the link you supplied..just as you did . i simply suplied the link so that we can get the ball rolling. I dont understand why it has to be such a process.. having to comb over paragraphs to find links or information pertaining to the Sprint edge really sucks. Im glad others feel the same way i do! Devs are posting links...yet i cant find the right one amongst 10 others... then when i see a BIG sprint sign im thinking great here we go!!
..but alas its only for changing the tmobile 4g to Sprints lte icon?! Wtf! Come on for simplicitys sake....why is this even a issue??

I agree. I have the Tmo Edge and we are all stuffed into one thread to discuss things.
I understand that there aren't a whole lot of Edge users in general no matter which carrier you are with.
I think we are all lumped together for that reason. It isn't difficult to open forums for individual carriers. It has to be something else. Laziness.

Its called a 14 day return policy- i dont have time to sit in front of my computer all day.. 5 13 hour days overnight kind of take its toll... and i find it hard to get out of the house even on my day off. I have 5 days to figure out what i wanna do... so your smart ass reply is un warranted. This isnt my first rodeo..and i understand these things take time but I spent 400 plus dollars for a device that lags like holy hell.... i cant even get support from the forums...the mods seem to be nonexistent...not even a reply to mine and others request to split our forums so that there would be one centralized location for Sprint owners to go to for their information I'm not going to continue to dig around other peoples post to find stuff pertinent to my phone....that seems to be where this is going... its called frustration dude....
well I've messaged the moderators of the forum let's see where this takes us as far as getting our own section now
I'm sure with your charming disposition they will be quite receptive to your ideas.
