I was wondering if this was an issue with any roms or hardware. I have had my mytouch 1.2 since march and have noticed poor signal in areas that i should have 3g based off the coverage map (ex. at my tmobile store i should have 3g and periodically edge but I teeter between edge, gsm and no signal) Im not sure if it is a sim card issue or a phone issue. basically im just looking for some advice to resolve this.
thanks in advance

hi there,
I have my new N1 shipped to Hong Kong. I knew there is an issue on 3G for US. but don't think it will affecting if in here....
Unfortunately I experience that when I want to use internet thr. 3G network, it is unable to auto-enable (after the phone is sleeping a while). Now it only can use wifi or completely re-boot it. It is weird for such on HTC machine. I haven't have such issue on magic or hero?
The 3G issue is a android prob and i had it with my other android phones:
Cliq/Dext
Magic
dream
hero
behold 2
Not sure why it has a prob with 3G but i hope it gets fixed soon.
it is so strange, after re-boot the phone, then no such problem
It's weird that some people are having these issues and some aren't. I have a mytouch, G1 and Nexus One and I never lose 3G in my city. I just don't see how it could be a problem with Android when not everyone is experiencing it. I've also never heard of anyones phone having to be restarted to get 3G, that's really weird.

It depends on your area and your towers. I've had my N1 work just perfectly on 3G - with great download speeds even. Then I move just a mile or two away and suddenly it is giving me all sorts of problems where my G1 has 3G just fine. I've had it work just fine in areas with a weak 3G signal, and I've had it be a nightmare in an area with a (supposedly) strong 3G signal.
<halfbakedtheory>My particular theory is that there are some towers in T-Mobile's network that use a configuration that the N1 doesn't want to listen to and so it then oscillates between wanting to use Edge on that nearby really strong signal (which supports 3G, but the N1 is blind to that), or using 3G on some weak signal from a neighboring tower. It then flip-flops unable to make up its mind. Other phones with a firmware that trusts all of the T-Mobile towers would simply use 3G on the local tower and avoid the quandary. And if you have never been in an area served by such a tower then you've never seen the problem...</halfbakedtheory>
First: I have a HD2, found WinMo unusable, tried several NANDS but have a problem. I'm running the 2.15.50.14 radio and I notice the signal isn't quite as strong in poor signal areas (I live and visit poor signal areas and use WiFi and UMA where WiFi is available) as my MyTouch 4g.
Has anyone found a better radio or is the problem related to the antenna?
Next: I've read most of the WiFi Calling/UMA threads here and I'm wondering if T-Mobile's release of UMA for the Samsung Vibrant provides any extra help for developers?
*IF* a NAND can have UMA and *IF* I can get just a little bit better reception in weak signal areas (I've learned to live with EDGE and 2 to 3 bars <sigh>) I think I'd be dumping the MyTouch 4G and live with the HD2.
IMPORTANT NOTE: P*L*E*A*S*E do NOT tell me about any VOIP, it's NOT UMA.
I currently have the the G2 on the T-mobile network. I frequently switch back and forth between 3G and Edge which is driving me nuts. Is this a phone issue or a network issue? Do people with the Desire Z on the ATT network have the same issue?
Its a network issue with your location, It happens on any phone including the iPhone. Its if the carrier has that service available where you are.
I am located in Minneapolis which supposedly has very good T-mobile 3G coverage. A friend of mine who has a G1 on T-mobile here in Minneapolis always sees solid 3G. This makes me wonder whether this is a phone issue. Flashing the 17 radio did improve reception, but not satisfactorily. Could any ATT users share their experience?
I mean, the phone and radio and rom will play a factor somewhat in it but not that much. To be fair, edge and 3G dont have too much a difference in speed or at least not here in Florida, but i run 4G almost everywhere anyways.

For the MOST part, this is a network issue. The phone Radio will have an impact on the quality of cell signal you get but the network carries the most weight. Not all phones are created equal as far as reception goes. My DZ is average. Its not great like my previous BB Bold was but doesn't drop calls like my gf's phone.
I do on occasion drop from 3G to Edge but only when I'm in rural areas. I work in a jail on occasion and of course the concrete walls aren't great for cell signal. I usually switch from 3G to Edge when I'm there because Edge just holds the signal better rather than the phone killing itself trying to find a solid 3G signal.
Also, like the other user mentioned, 3G and Edge aren't night and day per-say. For example, sometimes Edge can be FASTER depending on how much traffic is on the network at that time. I experienced this on a day trip to San Francisco. With 3 gazillion Iphones in the city, I couldn't get my phone to connect to anything with 3G. When I switched to Edge, it was moving steady no problem...
Just my 2 cents.
Is Negri Electronics still the cheapest place to buy the Desire Z NAM or are there other sites with better offers? I checked ebay and all the phones there are more expensive when you calculate in shipping.
Possible Fix
Here is one thing that may fix the problem, as it has for me. Set your phone to WCDMA only by dialing *#*#4636#*#* . A menu will then appear. Select Phone Information. Change Set Preferred Network Type to WCDMA Only.
Hope this helps!

Yes, already tried that as well, but then I lose connection completely intermittently instead of switching between edge and 3G.

I feel very sorry for you then. EDGE makes me want to claw my eyes out versus 3G. Everywhere in New England on AT&T, the difference in speed between EDGE and 3G is like the difference between throwing a bullet and shooting it. Even more so with the "4G" HSPA+ backhaul recently done by AT&T in many areas. But even before that, it was a big difference.
My Desire Z very seldom switches from 3G to EDGE. When it does, its in areas of very weak 3G coverage. As others have mentioned, its likely a network issue. Flashing a new radio is pretty easy (and you can always flash back to stock), so it may be worth a try. But it may or may not have any significant impact.
hey everybody. i live in southern MB Canada. as of march 31st Rogers hspa network is available in my area. i have a HTC HD2 running android 2.3 and my wife has a htc Mytouch 3g running android 2.2. but our reception hasnt improved while many other people in our town have seen an increase from 1 bar(or no reception) now to full bars reception. im wondering if anybody know a good radio that picks up the rogers network well? and if anybody has any other input that may help that would be great. thanks.
really want to be able to use my phone in my house. thanks.
So i just got a sim card for my phone. Well i get amazing service at my moms house and thats cause theres a tower right next to us at the local ski resort. However at my fathers house i get horrible service. If i pick up my phone i loose service completely, ive done the hardware fix, which didnt help, and when i do have service its always JUST edge. When according to T-Mobile's coverage map i am flooded with 3g and some 4g all around me.
So im guessing it MUST be the phone. In addition to the hardware fix, im thinking about soldering a 26-30 gauge wire to the two prongs and laying the wire around the device. like the perimiter of the Mobo. Giving it an antenna like my HTC Touch Pro 2.
Also, would flashing a newer radio help any? If i am able to flash a newer radio cause i know in order for android to work that it must be a certain radio. Howerver now that android is set up will i be able to flash one? Im on CLk btw.
Secondly, when i have service its EDGE, but occasionally it will jump to H symbol (Im guessing this is HSDPA) now the reason its jumpping would have to be lack of service, my guessing that is. To me its the equivelant of jumping from 3G to 1x on Sprints network.
Also what is G? lol i am at G now not E or H just G lol. Sorry for my noobishness but im coming from a Sprint CDMA network
Does anybody else have issues like this?

I've noticed it's horrible when I hold it, could it be my sim card?

Hey, I've had my HD2 T-mob for over a year now imported to New Zealand. And I'm running on 2degree's(Vodafone) here which runs on GSM and UMTS, I only get reception in cities and it still cuts out when I'm in very low residential areas. I get absolutely no reception outside of any city and it's just completely unreliable, My baseband is 15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14 I don't know too much about this stuff but I'm pretty sure I'm running the most up to date radio. Any help or recommendations would be superb.

Well after much googling hoping to find a software fix, there isnt any. Its the hardware of the phone(in my case anyhow) T-Mobile's coverage says i have strong 3G and some 4G (like if i drive 5 mins) but yet i can barely pic up edge. So i took apart my phone and solderd two wires the the prongs and BOOM easily 3G was picked up two - three bars. BUT i couldnt reassemble the device because the wires were too big. All in all it comes down to HTC putting in a lowsy antenna. It works good if youre right next to a tower but second you go away it sucks. I mean heck, i bought a cheap 29 dollar T-Mobile prepaid samsung phone and that had 2 bars solid of 3G. So i know the service is there but its just that the phone cannot pick it up.
