WTB Nexus One or Samsung Galaxy S? - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hello,
Which one should do you guys think I should buy?
The Nexus One or the Samsung Galaxy S?
I really like the N1 because its really fast with Froyo 2.2 and it has a nice look to it and because it has an LED flash. Also because it has Adobe Flash but I dont really need all that because Im only 14 years old and im going to use it for texting mostly. and is texting on the N1 good? like is it responsive?
But I also like the SGS because it has a 4 inch scrren with an SUPER AMOLED screen. And i also like it because its really fast with games and the 720p recording is really good. But I dont really like the UI on it so do you guys think I could change it and make it look like the N1s UI? and is it good texting with this phone?
THANKS IN ADVANCE

Since you are 14 and going to use it for texting mainly i suggest the n1. The metal body is much more durable than the plastic body of the galaxy s
Sheeeit when i was 14 i was into romping and all that whole day. I would want something durable and not having to worry about it damaging.
Besides nexus one has support in the us right away ... the galaxy s u may have to wait a while depending if you are going to get the us version or european.

If you like the UI in nexus one, you can actually install another launcher in ur SGS. For intense, ADW launcher or launcherpro. These are the two most popular launchers out there I believe. In fact I don't like the TouchWis 3.0 UI as well. So I believe after I purchase the SGS, I will install and other launcher or wait for some new roms.
In this case, I think SGS is a better choice.

Ive goooot it

the only thing I wish is to get froyo and a rom without the hole samsung stuff just the plain os...

BYE BYE Nexus One WELCOME Galaxy
Can you list, in your opinion, your Pros and Cons when comparing with the nexus one?

Yes:
i9000:
+ screen, never seen a better one, even without backlight on its perfect
+ it feels very smooth the touchfield
+ speed, its fast, I feel its faster with 2.1 then nexus one with 2.2 and you need to know that i9000 stock fw is fully loaded with crap I dont like
+ cam, never before Ive a phone with such great video recordings/photos IMPRESSIVE (even on recorded vids the sound is much much better the on n1)
+ surfing, its the perfect size to surf the web
+loudspeker, 5.1 sounds VERY nice
+SWYPE is nice
- many app´s from samsung (fe. email, phone, sms) are in my opinion to colorful and to overloaded I prefer simple app´s for ex. the mail app uses a old yellow style background I dont need things like this I like the n1 style
- the size is the maximum a phone could be, Im 193cm large and my hands are although large but its not comfortable to use it with one hand for minutes
its thinner and it feels lighter, the surface isnt of high quality like the n1 (teflon, Ive got just one1mm scratch after using it for a half year) but its oke...
THAT IS IT...
I think if I can get rid of samsung app´s (for me mail, phone and sms), get flash working ITS THE PERFECT PHONE!!!

Galaxy S or...... ??

guys,
my HD2 Died the other day. lucky for me i had an insurance on the phone so now ik can chose any other one (within budget) and the galaxy s got my mind along with the desire, nexus one and iphone 4.
so can anyone convince me why i should buy the galaxy s and not the rest of them, or even a new HD2 ???
also, how is the s amoled ? is it that much better then normal lcd/amoled ??
It really depends in what YOU like most. The best features of the Galaxy S is the Super AMOLED screen that REALLY stands out, it is much better readeble than the others in the sun and is less power hungry! Also it has the best processor of them all (don't know about the processor of Iphone4 though). It won all benchmarks with a good margin against snapdragon. The Desire is good if you want a Nexus one with Sense UI. Nexus One is the best if you want the newest updates from android as fast as possible. And Iphone4, well... Get it if you want an Iphone, but I like android better .
well i dont like apple that much, just the specs of the iphone 4 are great.. thats the only thing.. i dont care about interfaces or updates that much, i want a fast and stable telefoon, if i dont like the interface il put a new rom on it or something..
The SGS is currently the fastest there is, and the strongest.
1GHZ Hummingbird, it's pretty much the same processor in the iPhone 4, but SGX540 GPU vs the iPhone's 535... it's really no contest, the 540 is a hell of a lot stronger.
If it's specs you care about, one SGS to rule them all.

how about the ram ? read something about the ram being an internal SD card and it was pretty slow, or is that on extreem events ?
I have just made the jump from the Hd2 to the Galaxy s. I think that the Galaxy s really is a better product. The screen, on board memory, android ect, and it just works, I really would recommend this phone. I was abit unsure about android having never used it before and always being a windows mobile stalwart, but I really, really like it. its certainly the best phone I have ever owned, you wont be dissapointed. even the price is good

i get 600 euro's back from insurance, and the shop wich i have to spend it at asks 600 euro's for the galaxy s 16 gb so thats perfect. well..
thanks for the info all, think the Galaxy is the phone its gonna be
Good choice mate! Mine is on its way too.
The thing some people don't mention is, while the screen on the Galaxy S is stunning, things like text, especially the regular black/white variety looks grainy compared to regular LCD's like on the HD2. It can be quite jarring until you get used to it.
Is it really that much of an issue???

I keep reading about this as of late. If this is such a big issue, why aren't there any tech blog reviews stating this? I believe you and the others, but why is it not mentioned more often. One would assume that the SGS vs iPhone 4 debate would have mentioned this a million times, in a strike against the SGS. This is one reason I'm considering not waiting for the Verizon SGS (best looking version of them all) and either sticking with my Evo or jumping to the iPhone although I'm having a hard time with the thought of leaving Android after I just got here and loving it.

well, the HD2 screen really came short when watching a movie, i got the X1 with Hangcock on SD-Card and when i played it on the HD2 it wasnt as good on the X1. but if its only small things like text on the galaxy s i think ill get over that

I still have an HD2 and when I play the Transformers movies that came with it, it looks perfect as in HD like perfect. Then I tested a film that I had ripped myself and it didn't look as good.

I feel stupid....did I make a mistake buying the N1?

I bought the N1 and its on it way, I was really happy and that was my final choice, until today I was checking out the Euro Version of the Galaxy S and it has 1900 mhz 3g which is used in my Area! I could have bought that and had a bigger/better screen, Better Processor, Better Camera, and Design (subjective).
I do like the N1 dont get me wrong but that Super Amoled Screen is mouth watering lol

Unless you bought it on eBay etc, you could just return it.
Also, Galaxy S = no camera flash (absurd), Android 2.1 (2.2 in 4+ months), and a crappy skin on it.
Yea I bought on eBay, Im sure its not a Big Deal, the N1 is a fantastic phone, I love it, but I just think the Galaxy S looks really nice! Haven't used one though.

I have used both, and while the Galaxy is a very nice phone, I can honestly say theres no way I would trade my Nexus One for a Galaxy S.
i wouldnt worry as much as you are. the nexus has a lot of advantages that the galaxy S does not. google updates, colored trackball, unlock bootloader, camera flash, superb build quality and materials and feel in comparison to the lightweight plasticky galaxy s, etc.
Thanks guys! Im sure the GS Is very nice but the N1 does indeed own!
ive actually been considering a galaxy s also and luckily my friend picked up one with his new contract a few days ago. after playing it with, i can tell you both are nice phones and you cant go wrong either way.
ive had my n1 for several months now so i have experienced many of the bugs the n1 has such as in rare cases, the n1 will send a text message to the wrong person (thought i did something wrong the one time it happened to but apparently its a bug; i text a lot too). i agree with the other poster in the feel of the n1 is better than all the other phones i have held and is only beaten by the new iphone.
my friend has the samsung vibrant, and for some reason, it doesnt have flash so if taking night pictures is a big deal for you, the n1 wins. however, i felt the the vibrant took better day pictures. the vibrant also has a night mode that is better than the other phones i have had, but is no replacement for flash. the same applies to video recording, vibrant wins during the day in both video and sound recording, and n1 wins in recording in dark places.
if gaming is a big deal for you, the galaxy s is the winner. i was playing psx4droid on the vibrant and although i didnt notice any speed improvements over the n1, i can tell you the vibrant supports at least a 3 finger multitouch, over the n1's 2.
one of the biggest flaws i felt the n1 had is the speaker. i am constantly missing calls and the quality is pretty bad, but somehow samsung managed to put in a worse speaker, or at least i thought so
Yeah, I don't think the Galaxy S is superior, more like on the same class.
Galaxy S has a better screen (larger, brighter) and more internal storage but no led notification, most likely no updates past 2.2, no camera flash. CPU is about equivalent. N1 seems better built. I just got my N1 two weeks ago and was also considering the Galaxy S but stock Android was what sold me on the N1.
It doesn't matter if the Galaxy S is better or not, a better phone will come along and surpass both phones. If you're not happy with the Nexus One now, you're not gonna be happy when every new big phone comes out.

Yup, but in six months when N1 is rocking android 3.0 and GS still has 2.1/2.2 you'd be much happier with a N1.

The N1 might be out shined in a few of those areas, but like others have mentioned, it will be the first to get Gingerbread. The Galaxy S probably never will. Samsung is going to expect you to purchase a new phone for 3.0 instead.

Ya but shortly after that, something else will come out running 3.0 that's better than the N1, its a continual cycle. I'm just happy that the N1 is an awesome phone in itself, another phone may be better but it shouldn't take anything away from what I can do with mine.

You are right, and I agree. My point is, in six months he might not be ready to get a new phone yet (like I know will be my case), and in that case it is better to have a N1 over the GS. That was my reasoning choosing the N1. Of course, there might be unofficial 3.0 roms available for both phones, so maybe it will be a non issue at all for the OP.
I agree. N1 has its own unique speciality. Galaxy S is better in may way (because it came out later) but Nexus One can be modified easily and there are a lot of developers for it so that u can customize it to ur liking
Everything on the nexus is awesome .. it's just the touch screen.. multitouch doesn't work well on games and emulators.. but other than that it's an awesome receiving all the love

I actually got my Nexus one recently and I'm fortunate that living in England pretty much all android devices are available.
I went there knowing the Galaxy S for instance can easily outperform the Nexus in most areas, especially in graphical terms.
I had a play with the Galaxy and two things struck me between that and the Nexus, I felt the Galaxy is too big and not easily pocketable and the 2nd was it just didn't feel like a precision bit of kit like the Nexus.
The Nexus just feels like it's in the top class when it comes to design and the Galaxy less so.
For me it's a no brainer, proper camera, beautiful device and it doesn't get all of the custom stuff over the top.
traitor
I am contemplating selling my nexus one and getting a galaxy s. I would be sad to lose the trackball wake and led flashlight that my fine rooted nexus brings, but I am tired of struggling to use my phone in the sunlight, and would be happy to have a more responsive screen and better GPU.
I had the Galaxy and it doesn't even compare to the quality of the Nexus one. The Nexus One is the best built device still today. The quality build is 2nd to none and the looks are just killer. I think the 3.7 inch screen is the best size for a phone. Go Nexus One. The only thing better may be the Nexus Two.
^ Well said! The Galaxy is not in the same league as the Nexus! Even though I do like the name

Keep tellin' yourself that if it makes you feel better.
A friend has the tmo version. It is very nice. Smooth video recording with audio that is significantly better. No flash? As if the n1 camera and flash is anything to crow about. Lol. Photos don't have purple blobs in the middle on the vibrant.
But it was the video he got out of it that impressed me the most.
The n1 does feel better built.

my Atrix Vs Nexus S experience

so my brother has a nexus S. i have an iphone 4, and i ordered from amazon last week the Atrix and i got it yesterday " returned it yesterday also . screen flicker problem. " anyway here is what i think between the 2 devices.
Speed :
surprisingly i found the nexus S faster in terms of response / no lag. my brother didnt overclock the phone. but in terms of use. the nexus S was faster.
the Atrix S sometimes lag athe app drawer, when you move an icon to the main widget screen. it might be cause of the stupid blur is too slow. but its for what its.
who knows when atrix would get faster than the nexus S if it got custom roms or clean rom just like the nexus S. but i dont think it will if any.
Games :
i tried need for speed shift on both phones. i couldnt tell the difference. in fact. it looked better on nexus S due to the colors .
however. we also tried the Nintendo 64 emulator. and some games like killer instect and golden eye run much better on atrix " almost not playable on nexus S. so we over clocked the nexus to 1.5 i think. it was better. but the phone started to hang and reboot
Screen :
personally, i think the super amoled is one of the best screens in the market. but i thought that high res qhd screen on atrix might make a difference. and i was wrong. i could still see the pixels on both atrix and nexus S. the difference is the colors are much better on nexus S. super amoled wins here hands down. qHD my @$$.
Sound :
i think both are the same. loud and clear sound on both devices.
Hardware design :
this is personal taste. but i did like the finger touch access on the atrix. even tho its hard to turn on the phone due to its awkward place. i found that its easier on nexus S. the curves on nexus S PERSONALLY looks better than the curves on Atrix.
Camera :
i tried few shots. i thought it looked better again on the nexus S. the atrix shots had this sort of dots/dust fliter on it. didnt look clean at all. dont know if my phone had a defective camera as well or not.

I'm sure this is a Motoblur issue. Man, that thing is laggy! If you try a different launcher (LP or ADW, for instance), it'll get much better. I have seen that, even in single cores like Defy or Milestone 2.

why do they keep using it ? your average phone user wont know its a blur issue and go for different launchers. he will try the phone at the store. its lagging. screw it and try the next phone.

They need something to differentiate their brand of Android phones from others on the market. Vendor skins are the only real way to do it for the average consumer.
The hope is that you enjoy the enhanced functionality or look that a custom skin brings and will steer your future purchases based on that (i.e. you like motoblur and don't want to lose it, so buying a phone with HTC Sense will be less attractive than another phone with motoblur).
I don't think that average users are going anywhere near a custom launcher (nor do they know what a "Launcher" is even if they stumble upon it in the market).
Demo phones tend to run fairly well in stores (if they have an operational demo) and the average use time for a demo phone is pretty small. I don't think most people would come away with a negative impression from high end phones using the demo units.
hmmmm
Thank you for the quick review.
Did you ship it back for a replacement or just a refund?
The fact that Android itself doesn't require a dual core phone with a gig of ram speaks in volumes here.
As the OP stated, he saw improvements for the Atrix when he played games on the N64 emulator; the phone is fast, yes, but things like aa locked bootloader and 2.2 slow it down when in comparison to pure Google devices with a good ROM.
I'm on a 2.3.3 rooted, deoxed, ziplined N1 and this is the fastest I've seen any phone go, and I have a OCed Capttivste and I had the Atrix as well.

Probably have a defective camera or something sense the camera takes very clear and sharp pics on mine.
And for the speed heck even when i first got mine everything was super fast motor blurr didn't cause any problems for me, And ya im not a normal user which pretty much everything i get my hands on i want too hack or overclock
Like my galaxy tab im running voodoo and have it overclock too 1.4ghzs.
And for the screen it looks fine on my atrix and i don't see any pixels unless i turn the screen on very bright than i see them which i usely keep mine on low which is good enough.
And for the power button were its located at i like were its at hehe sense if its in my pocket the power button doesn't get bump and its easy for me too turn it on.

yeah i also do think i had a defective camera because it wasnt supposed to be like this.
and i am not dissing the atrix really i know its great art of a hardware. in fact when i retuned my atrix my brother told me why dont you go with nexus S ? it didnt feel right to me because somehow i knew i was going back step in terms of technology
its just the blur. 2.2, locked bootloader is really killing the phone. this phone, on paper, should be at LEAST 2 to 3 times more powerful than nexus S. yet the nexus S imho is winning in terms of pure speed and response. even zoom in and out in the browser was faster on nexus S. but once it was pure gaming ? the atrix ran circles over nexus S

Very interesting. Yes, AMOLED looks amazing, but it burns in, and it's very power hungry. I have a Captivate, and one of the things I hate about it is the AMOLED screen.

- The qHD screen color sucks for sure. Colors are distorted compare to IPS screen and color calibration sheet. Super AMOLED is vibrant yet suffer from burn-in problems and consumes too much power decreases the internet browsing time.
- The camera is a little pink here is my example of the quality.

i had a defective camera. and the screen used to flicker on high brightness.and i did mention it. why cant i make an impression based on the other things beside the cam ?
and i do agree the phone as hardware is awesome. its the best in the market and imho better than the optimus 2x.
but as its stands right now. the nexus S was a better phone if you are not a gamer. and thats only due to the software being locked down and 2.2 along with blur.
i did mention when i started playing emulators that requires power, the Atrix did circles over Nexus S.
the screen whatever you like super amoled, iphone ratina, motorolla Qhd,, is something personal. but in my eyes i saw the super amoled better because i thought with QHD i wont be able to see pixels on screen " which is a good trade off. no pixels, but less colors. just like the iphone ratina " . and i was able to see the pixels just like how i did with the nexus S. so it came back to me which has better colors and again, imho the super amoled was better.
not saying the qHD is bad. if i can pick one of the phones right now thats both working perfectly, imma pick the Atrix. its just the super amoled is better to look at. and if you are not a hardcore gamer, you will probably enjoy the nexus S more for now. due to the lack open bootloader, roms. etc

SGS II is the best...

Ive bought a Note and today a Galaxy Nexus and they all go back...
Nothing to compare with the S2...
Can you be more precise on what you dislike?
on note:
+display size for browsing
-laggy and slower comperd to s2
-size, im 193cm but its too big for beeing a mobile phone
on galaxy nexus:
+display it looks really georgous
+videocam can zoom on fullhd and shows more
-ics at this moment (mods, app support, flash etc) is not better then gingerbread
-microsd card
Galaxy S2 is still the best one, the note and nexus only have a larger screens with higher res. And this is it.

How is the note laggier? I thought it was an overclocked S2
How was the battery life on the note and nexus?
I am curious since I was thinking of changing
Have to admit having an s2 with an sd card slot is brilliant, why on earth they didn't see that as a plus I'll never know!

The notes battery was really better compared to the s2. my s2 survives on heavy useage on a office day 8 hr, the note could add 3-4 hrs... on the nexus i dont know.
The note is lagerif you use it daily as a mobile device, youre not able to use it with one hand...

so the note is laggier becoz of its size limitation in regards to physical manipulation, not the cpu processing power. is that what u mean?

I'd like to comment on this and say that after the SGN has been released, the hype has gone down for me. Being a new OS/phone there seem to be a plethora of bugs flying around, with small annoyances starting to come out.
As a techie it's easy for me to claim ICS superiority, but how will you explain these things to your dad for example? "ICS is...uh...better..."? The average person would see very minor changes. Yes the interface is new, but how is this really different from installing a new launcher? Sorry to sound cynical about ICS but to most people it is a minor interface change. The practical experience would be like moving from HTC Sense to TouchWiz... different interface but overall still the "same".

+1
I have a note and s2. With2.3.6 firmware the note performance is more or less like the s2. Screen is better than the s2 and unless you have small hands it's very comfortable to use. Default CPU speed is 1.4 GHz which is enough to handle the extra pixels.

I dont know about ICS yet, but honeycomb experience in tablets is better than gingerbread/froyo, beyond cosmetics.

I dont agree about ICS being the same as installing a new Launcher. Go watch some more vids about ICS. You see changes in the phone app, in the calander app, in the browser. The UI is more consistent in every part of the OS, giving it a modern and complete look. There are nice animations, also for switching from portrait to landscape view, the new notifications bar, etc etc.
Not to mention there should be new features.
The Engadget ICS review goes pretty deep in to ICS.
I usually am like you and very honest and direct about if I like something or its not such a big deal. But imo ICS is a very good and nice update.

From someone who owned an HTC Diamond, the omission of an SD Card is a stupid idea. From a manufacturer's point of view, you make one phone which can have an 8GB, 16GB or 32GB extra memory which can be plugged in or (like Apple) manufacturer 3 variations of the exact same phone.

umm most of the things u point out is common sense ? couldnt u have known that before getting them ?
for example the size ... yes its big ..... didnt u know this >?????
yes ICS isnt better in the department because its NEW didnt u know this ether ?
no microsd card .... yeah couldnt u have known this from the spec page on samsung ??
this is one of the strangest threads
Interesting opinions, for me the Note is ruled out straight away it is simply too big for a mobile and frankly i think it looks a bit silly walking around with something that size stuck to your ear.
The Nexus i would be more interested in but the lack of SD rules out me getting that straight off, what were Samsung thinking
Actually i don't know why Samsung are even bothering releasing more and more smartphones trying to rival the SGSII, i hope it's not a case of quantity as opposed to quality, churning out a new smartphone every few months for me isn't the way to go, if i were Samsung i would've waited until Feb 2012 and released the SGSIII complete with ICS and watch as sales rocket, lets be honest the Note and Galaxy will be lucky to achieve even a 1/3 of the sales the SGSII has done, only the wealthy and those who are really obsessed with having the latest smartphone regardless if it's the best or not will buy, judging by the reviews ive read both these phones are no better than the SGSII so why bother shelling out lots of money.

The note blows away the sg2 IMO. I have both and gave the sg2 to my girlfriend.e

I'm not really impressed with ICS as well, UI change is a big thing especially the on screen buttons but I'm not a big fan. 2.1 and the Nexus one was still the most exciting thing to ever happen to android, big leap forward and the best smartphone available by a mile!

These changes in phone, calendar, browser etc doesn't mean we'll see them on the s2. Samsung has their own, tw etc. To me these are small changes anyway. What more do I want in the phone app anyway!
I really don't get all the hype about ics as well. More just looking forward to see what the new Samsung ui looks like.

Don't you think it's wayyyy too big to be a phone, christ you may as well go back to 1988 when you had yuppies walking about with the first ever mobile phone
I don't have tiny girl hands so no its not way too big at all. Fits perfectly, if anything the SG2 seems too small now. I could never go back to a phone smaller than 5". Unless you're a psuedo-male that's around 5'4"-5-5" with girl like hands, it should be no problem to handle. Hell even most average sized girls could handle it with ease.
