This is my first samsung. And I think i'm a bit spoiled as a nokia n900 user. But the recorded sound on my samsung galaxy is just horrible in comparison to my n900.
Last night I went to a show of cypress hill here in the Netherlands. And started recording. The video quality is super. Only the noise makes it almost impossible to distinguish any of the songs etc. I mean really horrible.
After some research i found out that users with the samsung omnia had this same issue, and they found a solution wich was adjusting some settings in the hidden menu of the phone.
Is it also possible to adjust these settings in the galaxy s i9000?
Below are the settings for the omnia hd reducing
with phonepad digit *#0002*28346#
then 3) Record
then 04) CamcordARM_AMR (this is volume gain in video record)
Go to
TxMicAmp : 24
digit 18#
and then when you go back will see
TxMicAmp : 25
Then go to
Tx Channel: 18
digit 18#
and then when you go back will see
Tx Channel: 18
To save all changes go back back
6)Backup and will show "Backup OK"
Yeah I noticed the heavy clipping (sounds like static, noise, distortion) in all of the Galaxy S recordings. I haven't really seen anyone else mention it.
However the Omina HD runs Windows Mobile does it not? Totally different OS there..
this should show that menu *#197238640#
Any luck with this? I have opened the service menu, but no idea what to do after that.
i also would like a fix for this!

I got the same problem when I try to run VOIP application. The noise is so terrible. I can enter "service mode", but I don't know how to setup them either.
Same here, video recording is quite useless like this... Went to a concert last evening and video is great but sound is ultimate crap! As in one big pile of noise.
But also when recording a video in the car, with just the radio on, is stretching it... It is at least possible to distinguish different sounds but already distorted.
Such a shame! Any fix for this would be great (and couldn't find much in the servicemode settings unfortunately).
I'm using the JM2 firmware and the sound of recorded videos is poor.
I wish we found the solution, as I had found on i8910
Meh, contacted samsung helpdesk (mail) and got a standard response
'We are currently developing a firmware update, please keep an eye out for it on the samsung website'. (translated from dutch ).
My guess is the firmware update won't fix a thing since it's still present in JM2 but we'll see.

In other words: keep waiting. Saying it will be fixed in next release is the best way to keep customers happy without doing anything
But on the other side maybe with 2. 2 it will be fixed.

Yup, I know... But what can you do. They prolly also don't know much about the technical stuff.
At least there's a new firmware coming up, I think I'll give JP3 another shot and see if things have improved there.

that's a good tip
can more people confirm if this optimization works well?
if so, then we can put this as a sticky / FAQ / wiki
Disregard my post about Diamond solution, it's for headphones. I'm pretty sure some parts of the service menu => audio => handset could be tweaked to make audio recording better, just need someone who knows what means what.
There is a way to alter the recording volume during the recording however it requires adb shell and it only lasts for the duration of the remainder of the recording.

That's something at least, wanna share that?
Also I found a quick and dirty workaround if you wanna record some music before some kind of fix appears - just put your finger on the mic hole while recording ^^

While playing around with some recording apps I noticed that most recordings I got were too loud and distorted. I figured it had to do with some sort of an Auto Gain Control. I was right when I tried one app called "TapeMachine" which has an option to disable AGC and also has a mic gain control which is great. Once it disabled AGC the recording sound was much better. Clear and undistorted.
I understand that AGC is important for phone calls but it's terrible for recording audio and video. It would be nice to record videos with AGC off and I can't find an option to disable it in the system settings. Can't find an app that controls it either.
Does anyone know of an app that turns AGC on/off and have manual gain control?
Thanks!
Anyone reading these questions?
argh...
I will pay for an app that can disable the microphone auto-gain control!
Come on people, haven't you noticed recording stuff sound like crap?
The sound on recorded videos is just bad. And it's not because the microphone is bad, it's because the AGC is always enabled.
Try "TapeMachine" and hear for yourself. I'm not joking.
I think I'm not the only one who would be happy about a feature like that.
I searched around the mkt, and couldn't find anything other than recording apps, paid or free, that even mention the AGC either. Kinda surprising.

First of all I'm glad I was able to wake someone up around here. It seems like no one knows there is an AGC in Android, but "TapeMachine" definitely revealed that to me.
I did find someone mentioning the same issue on the Samsung Galaxy forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896826
You can even see the difference in the waveforms pictures he attached to the post.
Well, I have some technical information, but I can't do much with it because I'm not a programmer.
The programmer of an app called "Break Speed" uses a code in his app to disable AGC and he wrote me what the code he uses is.
Maybe someone can use this information to create an app that can disable AGC. This is what he wrote me:
I found that in Android 2.2 (and higher), they introduced an undocumented flag in the AudioRecord() class, called “VoiceRecogntionQuality”. In the code, there is a note to expose and document that flag (it just hasn’t been done yet.) So I expect that it is supported (and will continue to be.) My guess is that AGC was added to 2.2 and this is the flag that disables it.
Here’s the code I used to adjust my recordings for it:
// We use our version to attempt "VoiceRecogntionQuality" recordings (to disable AGC)
int version = Integer.parseInt(android.os.Build.VERSION.SDK);
// Try to get the audio record for Android 2.2 and greater using 'voice recognition quality'
if (version >= 7)
{
recordInstance = new AudioRecord(6, m_frequency, m_channelConfiguration, m_audioEncoding, bufferSizeBytes * m_bufferCount);
}
// For older versions of Android (or failed attempts of the voice recognition quality recordings)
if (version < 7 || recordInstance.getState() == AudioRecord.STATE_UNINITIALIZED)
{
recordInstance = new AudioRecord(MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC, m_frequency, m_channelConfiguration, m_audioEncoding, bufferSizeBytes * m_bufferCount);
}

heh, I already implied that in the email I wrote him, but didn't really get a response.
I posted here, because there are programmers around here also, but it seems people are ignoring this issue. If I knew how, I would make an app myself.
just use Voice_recognition as source and that's all
same problem here, I tried with your friend's solution (using 6 instead of AudioSource.MIC) but nothing changes... the waveform becomes even worse when the source produces powerful sounds.

Changes in 0.3a:
11/7/2012 Video transitions much shorter! DONE!
The process for video selection is rather long so I'm having the next video selected while the current video is playing. This cuts down on time between video's in most cases!
11/4/2012 Incorporation of YouTube related video's DONE!
Related video's on a random metric!
11/2/2012 Youtube video quality option. DONE!
This one took a little while. Had do deal with what was available on a case by case basis. Bonus: Revision3 video's obey the quality setting!
11/2/2012 Preserve last video and position for resuming. DONE!
This turned out to be pretty simple too. Just had to store some state info in the db.
This was much easier than I thought it would be!
11/2/2012 Provide "In App" button for settings. DONE!
This was much easier than I thought it would be!
10/25/2012 9 patched the background image for feed items. DONE!
I was hoping that 9 patching the background image would give me a more consistent look across multiple devices in the feed manager. It helped but not nearly as much as I would have hoped.
Changes in 0.2a:
10/16/2012 Stop Moxee from playing while the screen is off. DONE!
There was an issue where if you turned the screen off when Moxee was in a transitional phase, threads that were started before the screen was turned off would cause the app to continue to play videos. Terminating these threads have resolved the issue!
10/15/2012 Toggle fullscreen to access notifications. DONE!
This turned out to be a simple matter of adding and clearing window flags. Now when ever you see the onscreen display, you will have access to the notification bar!
10/15/2012 Worked out a few minor issues.
There was an issue were sources were not seen until they had been updated by the back-end.
Added thumbnails for sources in the feed manager.
There was an issue where if YouTube did not have a "medium" quality mp4 for any particular video it would error off.
Resolved a threading issue where if next was pressed at a particular time, there would be a discontinuity between the titlebar and the actual video playing.
Resolved a threading issue where the titlebar said it was "Loading when in fact it was playing a video.
10/13/2012 Making setting available to those without physical menu button. DONE!
According to the information provided here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11702831/android-best-way-to-let-user-access-preference-activity) putting a menu option called "Settings" in the menu will cause ICS and above to show the 3 dot soft settings button. We shall see!
Well as it turns out that if you lower your build target(ei gingerbread), ICS (and above) will auto detect and put soft settings button in the action bar. However, lowering the build target caused problems with the latest Google ads jar so I had to revert to a lower version of that, but It's all working now!! I just need to make sure that the ads are really working.

It would be nice to be able to get to the original source of the video somehow, however I kind of like that you can't as it saves your from becoming distracted and not actually watching anything all the way through. In that respect it really is like watching old analogue TV.
Edit - Menu not available on the Xoom due to the lack of a dedicated (physical) menu button.

Thanks for giving my app a try! I have reproduced that it does play with the screen off and I will be working on that one. I don't think that I'm prepared to allow the app into portrait mode but what I will work on is the option to take it out of full screen mode so users will have access to the notification bar.

Thanks so much for testing on your Xoom! I suspected that the lack of a physical menu button might be a problem. I suppose it would be best to make my own buttons for those functions. When you say, original source of the video, I'm not sure what you mean, but I am considering a "download this video" button for the future and even a "cache these video's overnight" kinda thing...

Very watchable. It's not really any different to the quality it would be on YouTube, obviously some things that were uploaded in a lower resolution may not scale up to the larger screen size so well but I won't hold you responsible for that...

If you 7 inch tablet has Gingerbread then, I think, it should have a hardware menu button. If you 7 inch tablet has honey comb or above there should be a "3 dot" software button in the bottom bar, next to the 3 buttons on the left. If however, your 7 inch tablet has no hardware button and is running gingerbread or below, that is the case where there would be a problem

Whenever I send an audio note (by holding down the microphone icon), in Whatsapp ... the audio seems to come out in a low volume. When I play my own recording back on my phone, I have to pump up the media volume to the max to hear myself at a decent level. The other party on the other end seems to find the audio low in volume as well.
The strange thing is, if I create an audio file with the built in Sound Recorder, and then share that to Whatsapp, it's loud and clear. It's not like my microphone is broken. Audio records fine in all other circumstances.
I know many friends thats happen the same with same phone

Just tried this out on a Snapdragon 800 Note 3 running 4.3. I am unable to replicate the issue, however the quality is noticeably worse than what it would be if I used the built in sound recorder. This is because WhatsApp compresses what you are sending though, which might be what you are experiencing.

Will do, the more people we can get to report this the quicker the issue should be solved.
Furthermore, if you use Snapchat have you noticed that you cannot record video for the full amount of time? It cuts it around 5 seconds short, you might not use it but it's just something I've noticed.

That's great! The more people report the issue, the higher the chances of getting some attention.
Have you sent a second mail after receiving the initial "Request receipt" confirmation? Apparently if one doesn't, the ticket is placed in status "Awaiting your response".
I doubt it will be processed but closed automatically after after a few days, if no further reply is received, because one of the three suggested FAQ topics supposedly solved your problem, it was 'just' a feature request or whatever ideas are behind the way of handling email requests that way. At least that's what my experience with other support sites / help-desks has taught me...
7 days ago, on Feb 7th I received another email from WhatsApp support. Unfortunately it was a busy week and I managed to reply just yet. The ticket was again placed in "Awaiting your response"...
I will continue to post my experiences with the WhatsApp support team in the Sony Xperia Z1 area of the forum.
This has been fixed now, WhatsApp acknowledged the issue and have repaired it.

I think that Google's intent was to prevent non-determined creeps from taking "upskirt" shots and other related idiocies. You have to delete/rename some file, I think it was /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg or some such. This needs root.

It's illegal in South Korea (and many countries) for any mobile phone maker to sell a phone that allows a user to silence the faux shutter sound on their mobile phone cameras. You'll need to download a custom ROM that allow them to be silenced, or delete the sound like the above posted said.

That is really interesting! A friend of mine has a stock samsung galaxy s7 and it doesn't make a single sound when taking a picture!
Anyways, thank you very much for your answer, really appreciated and I even learned something!
Hello to everyone,
I hope someone could help me, i need to record any phone call that i make/receive, the phone should record the call without messages to the caller about the phone call is recorded.
Did someone can tell me how can i do this? i have seen that one option is to root the device but if someone have other suggestion is better for me than root the device.
I have also tried this app: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...cord-phone-calls-from-the-phone-line.1441643/ but use the microphone so sometimes there are very noise.
Bye

Yes. I am in the same situation. The only things I can think of are, 1. A call recorder app. or, 2. Using a different dialer, say from a Oneplus phone. But I'm still looking into it. I have been using a call recorder app that seems to work somewhat okay but not that great.
I Hope Simeone could help US..
I have also seen that changing the phone app Is not the solution because some apps uses CSC

That's good to know because I was going to try it. The thing is, depending on what version you have, call recording is built in. So that tells me that all variants could have it built in maybe ? Not sure but I am continuing to do research when I have the time.
Yes, I think that every android phone have this functionality, the problem is that phone app use CSC to enable o not, this is what I have understand

I know that on some newer OnePlus phones you can change the dialer to get call recording. I would think that the Nothing Phone would be similar but at this point I'm totally unsure.

I also read that you can root the phone and use a magisk mod. But I'm not ready to root the phone just yet because it's still under warranty.

Same for me, i don't want to root my phone just for the call recording... but yes, there is this mod that seems really simple....
GitHub - jacopotediosi/GAppsMod: Tweak Google apps (e.g., Phone and Messages) to unlock hidden features (e.g., available only in some countries or on certain devices). Root is required.

In India you can legally record calls. I wonder if the dialer from those ROMS would world on the global versions.

We could try this:
Enable Native Call Recording + OP Stock Dialer on OnePlus 10 Pro
Hi guys, Just upgraded from OP7T to OP10 Pro as a European user. Call recording functionality does not come with the device here. Had native call recording enabled on my OP7T through jOnePlus Tools and the likes. Jtools Oneplus does not install...

I tried to install it already but it won't install. Says phone needs to be rooted. But now that I'm thinking about it, I did install that app on a non rooted oneplus 7t before. Just have to give it permission via ADB. I think i might try it again and see if I can get it to install..
Correction. I tried to install just the joneplustools. This one is different.

Yeah, the joneplus tools says: can't install on this device. This app says: "something went wrong. Can't install app".
@rogerrulez

Please keep me updated if you find a way to do this :-D

Not really. I do have two apps installed that are recording calls pretty good ! One of them I installed from Google play called Call recorder. And the other one is one that I came across in one of the posts for the Nothing phone. I have both running at the same time and both are recording calls pretty good. However, I would rather have the inbuilt option.
I'm from Italy and have Nothing Phone for a couple of weeks now so I may be missing something.
I've tried ACR, a well thought app for call recording, but unfortunately it doesn't record bluetooth calls (earphone or car's) so as a couple of other apps. I guess it's a problem that every third party app is having, given Google policy.
So, I'm using the Google phone app call recording utility (upper right corder three dots > settings > call recording). This option has popped out the first time I put in the sim card. I suppose everyone can access this option but with Google you never know...
This makes available a button on the phone screen, a switch between call recording and not recording. Actually, it's only manageable when the call is started and it's available switching in the second screen of the app.
Overall it works pretty well, even on Bluetooth calls. The calls are accessible via the call log history and can de saved. The only drawdown is that you have to put a meaningful name to the file when saving it.
What drives me CRAZY is that it doesn't have the option to ALWAYS record the calls. Apparently, it's an available option (Google has a help page dedicated: https://support.google.com/phoneapp/answer/9803950?hl=en) but not for the Italian version. Or at least for my version
Does anyone know if and how I can make it a permanent choice? I don't want to manually switch it every time...
Any help is very appreciated

You could use MacroCroid. It can press the button for you and fill in the name for you too. You need a fair amount of time to set it up but it would work good.

Thanks for the tip! I thought the same and tried something similar yesterday (Tasker and another app, forgot the name) but gave up for the amount of time needed!
Going to try MacroCroid anyway, hopefully it's a little bit less complicate
Thanks again

You might like to share the macro you build here and change the title to [Solved] enable auto phone call recording
I love to help, have fun!
