My Atom thinks the earphones are plugged in when they aren't.
If I answer the phone, no sound, presumably because it thinks the earphones are plugged in and is trying to use those.
Activating the start menu or media player has no sound.
The FM Radio starts (which will only happen if it thinks the earphones are plugged in).
But they are not plugged in.
I am currently on ROM 20060426B1WWE.
The same thing happened on ROM 20060105B1WWE, the first ROM I upgraded to.
I know what you're going to say, that there is a hardware fault, either with the earphone connector or the speakers simply don't work.
Firstly, the speakers do still work. If I start the FM radio and set the little button at bottom left to use the speakers as well, they work.
As for the earphone connector, when I had the problem on the 0105B1 ROM, I could fix the problem by performing a hard reset. Sadly this doesn't fix the problem with the latest ROM, but I'm pretty sure that a hard reset doesn't fully reset the device's configuration.
So I'm pretty sure this is not a hardware issue. I think the OS keeps track of whether the earphones are plugged in, and this has got out of sync somehow.
The last time it happened, I did the following:
While I was playing an mp3 and listening with the earphones, I pulled out the connector and the speakers did not start to play as I think they should have. Now, as I said above, it thinks the earphones are connected all of the time.
Anyone seen anything similar, or have an idea of what I can do? I rang O2 and while they admit it is probably a s/w problem, they want me to send the Atom to them. I don't want to be without it for a week or so because it is my phone and I rely on it. So I thought I'd try here.
Thanks,
invisible earphone...
Hey Peter
I've got the exact same issue once...
But the problem i found for mine was that SOMEHOW when I plug out the headset jack, the slightly retarded Atom thinks I have not..
Just plug in the headset again and pull it out slowly... Then try out the phone if its back to normal...
It seems that the Atom is slow in picking up the disconnected headset...
Hope it works for you as it did for me...
Good Luck
Invisible earphones
Hi bulletproof_78,
Thanks a lot for the reply.
I have just tried it and no luck. I pulled the earphones out very slowly.
I think this is one of the biggest problems with any style of MS Windows. They want to cache everything for the sake of performance, and the cache gets out of sync with the thing it's caching. In this case I bet it tries to keep track of the earphone state internally. But if it misses an event like unplugging them, the internal state is different from the thing it is trying to cache.
Anyway, down off the soapbox.
I'll keep in mind what you said, and try it a few times over the next few days.
I might end up having to send it to O2 (all the way up to @#$%^! Queensland) so they can lose it, or replace it with some questionable one that they haven't fixed properly, or god knows what else.
Anyway, thanks again.
Atom thinks earphones plugged in
For anyone listening out there, the problem has gone away.
I don't really know why.
The only thing I did out of the usual was to turn Bluetooth on. The timing was perfect for me to think that this is what must have fixed the problem.
Do you think that might have fixed it? No I don't either.
And I'm reluctant to try to get it back into that state to see if this fixes it because I'm not that confident that this has fixed it.
I sure hope someone else has this problem and O2 or Microsoft hear about it.
I had the exact same problem you did. I fixed mine by very gently running a paperclip around the inside of the audio jack. Problem Solved!!!

hi guys i faced the same problem last week and i had to get it reparied from the repair shop and they informed me that the jack it not working properly and they will replace it with other jack which is used in sonyerricson cell phones as it is the same. I have got it done and now i have no problem.
Please try this method at the last.
Thanks Novice Boy
i tried the paper clip idea and it worked.
About 5mm inside the earphone jack, on the side closest to the USB port, you can feel a small 'bump' (lets call it the g-spot!) as you run over it with the paper clip. Do this with an MP3 playing or something and voila.....the music comes out of the speaker again and the phone rings, i can talk to people again. Seems there is a fault in recognising whether the earpiece is plugged in or out as many have suggested.

Even a tooth pick would do  Have not been using my FM radio but decided to try and got this problem! Was carful not to "short" anything inside so used a toothpick and it worked
Hi, mine is doing exactly the same thing and did intermittently for a while. Now I cannot get phone audio at all! I have even tried flashing the ROM and still nothing. Works perfectly with portable hands free. Do you think the audio plug is shot? Thanks.
awesome!!!
the paper clip trick really work!!! thanks Novice boy !!
I had this problem too, thanks to you guys and now its fixed.
Worked for me too..
Ok...This toothpic thing really works..
But I cant believe that after paying so much...I am encountering problems like these..
Anyone has any idea if the problem is solved for good or now we need to carry a toothpic too with a stylus...
Even mine problem got resolved automatically. I faced it 2 weeks back.
I tried re inserting the Headphone slowly and removingit and everything came back to normal
hey ive also had this problem...the only thing is that my phone doesnt think it has the headset plugged in because when i open the FM radio it says insert headset...it works when the headset is in and when its on speaker phone but other than that i cannot hear the person...i dropped my phone and this happened....i tried all the methods mentioned but its not fixing the problem...im guessing it could be hardware but the speaker and everything still works except for when your in a call...any ideas?
same prob due to wrong adaptor
i have the same problem. it's like the earphone jack is stuck because the fm radio works even without the earphones. sometimes this registry setting works sometimes it does not let me know if it works for you/anybody...

even i had this problem in my atom exec a few weeks back sorry i saw this now and for a pemanent solution for it is dont put anything inside just apply very little coconut oil on the handsfree connecter and then connect it to ur phone and keep removing and reinserting it for a couple of times and it will work for sure this happens due to dust or some particles getting stuck between those connectors not allowing the mechanism to work correctly hope it helps beacuse toothpick trick works fine but its temp and reoccur

I have the same problem and was very sad until trying the toothpic trick, even thought If I hit my pocket the problem returns, so I will try your recomendation, thanks!
Is there a hardware repair procedure, so maybe this part can be removed and replaced?
Yes it is a hardware problem. The headphone socket is faulty.
I've a HP 6828 - which is identical to Atom. I had this problem also.
Pls check this thread how to solve it yourself:

same problem goes to me to.. at first i'm quite shocked..there might be something damaged..then i insert a tooth pick (scared if i use paperclip could short the electrical terminal inside..) into the earphone jack.hoping a miracle to happen, then few moments, my atom back to normal..
I have to rave on this stereo BT head set. I have been tying to find one that I like for quite some time really exercising the 30 day return policies. I wanted somthing that had the best of both worlds, regular mono ear piece and an atachable ear bud for the stereo and this one has deffinatly got it right. Best sound yet, best fit and good looking. I was very impresed I think this one is a keeper, oh one down fall the price but still under $120.
I have one since december. It is (was) great, but...
The concept is great. The size too. The sound is OK to good with both earplugs. Problems are:
- the connection of the second earplug with the main one (the one with the battery) is very, very sensitive. After two months of use, it became so loose that I lost contact and couldn't use the stereo anymore. They should have made it like a "screw" plug or even an small USB plug, or RCA plug. The way it is, two small metal plates on the setero plug that have to "touch" another two small metal plates in the main plug is too sensitive and unreliable for real usage.
- two weeks ago, the place where you connected the stereo plug and which now I was using to plug the ear hook broke...
- Now I'm using it just with the earbud... only six months.
Again, great concept, and bad implemantation. I even thought about buying another one and use it more gently, but I guess that's unrealistic. I believe I should be able to put the headphone in my pocket or bag without worring too much.
duplicate, sorry.

I found and bought mine (Voyager 855) after searching on the internet...plain white box, plenty of replacement pieces, for onlyl.... ready for this....
$46.00.
The only issue I ever had was making sure it was connected when I needed it, installing A2DPToggle solved that issue, and all is now right with the world.

PS: got mine at cellphoneshop.net/855.html and have had several coworkers order from them and all has worked out well. Unfortunately, they've been out of stock for about a month now

How did A2DPToggle solve what? Mine stays connected most of the time.
SouthSideSvz,
before I installed the toggle, for unknown reasons the connection would drop and I found reconnecting a pain....
A caveat, though, this was happening when I first got the phone and the earpiece....haven't had any problems since then. But I have heard that the BT can drain the battery, so with the toggle I can shut down BT on the phone side too.
How much of it is a crutch, who knows... but I like it!

I just bought this same headset, and have also experienced it dropping connection and being hard to get reconnected. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong. At this point, do you think the toggle app is actually helping the problem?
I'm wondering if it's not just the simple fact that you turn bluetooth off and on, so it sort of resets itself, rather than anything this program does differently. However, I'm more than willing to give it a try!
I have one since about 6 months ago. A friend of mine that works at Plantronics Mexico gave it to me as a present and to test it out.
Honestly it's been a great product, it even survived a trip to the washer machine and it's still ticking!
The only problem I see with this particular set is that the connector on the loop is really flimsy (I'm on my second loop) so you'd better be careful and never let it plugged in while you store it on your pants or backpack, it breaks really easy (maybe it's just because my unit it's a pre-production set) but be careful nevertheless.
The sound is really bassy and loud for such small speakers it has very nice sound range.
The battery lasts for a few days of moderate use on stereo and a few weeks moderate use on mono.
One thing I like about it (which many will find disturbing) is that it isolates all sound from the exterior, so be careful while driving or things like that.
I give a 8.5/10 to this product.
I liked mine as much as you did, but then it didn't last long enough as I explained above.
I do believe they can change the implementation and keep all its good qualities that are many (let's be honest, there is not one other set that is as discreet/small and less cumbersome than this). I would know how to do it, so they just have to be willing to do so, I guess.
Perhaps you can pass my ideas to your friend. I would share them for free...

I will pass the info to my friend ASAP. However as far as I know, the Bluetooth Division was recently moved to China...
I remember my pal told me beforehand that this particular model has some (undisclosed) issues (well he mentioned battery not lasting long enough). Same with a newer mono model called Diamond or something like that.
Hey, these are just user's ideas. I'm not talking about engineering stuff.
They seem to be simple things (though you never know) like:
- connection of the stereo earbud: the way it is, it is just two metal plates touching each other. Very easy for things to get loose and lose contact. Happened with me. They either should use a RCA type plug or USB type plug (most likely).
- Also the stereo connection is also used to help support the headset on our ears. Fact is the headset weight is put on...THE STEREO CONTACTS, helping them get loose. So, Ear hook should be separated from connection to relieve it from weight stress.
- they could position the stereo connection where presently is the charger, and perhaps (if possible) make the connection be dual function like the Kaiser, where you can use the mini-USB both to charge and to connect headphone.
My two cents. Seems feasible.
Got my voyager 855 and it's sounds muffled on one earbud (the one with buttons). Using Tilt with one of the hybrid Dutty roms. The one you piggyback to main unit sounds much louder and very clear. Tested also without putting them in ear and with eargels off, switched ears. Anything I can try before requesting a replacement?
Thanks!
I have a vibrant and recently got a 3.5 km to RCA out and I'm having problems displaying vibrant on TV. I've tried all combinations but nothings working. Any suggestions.

-make sure the 3.5mm plug is all the way down on your phone
-swap the yellow and red on your tv side

Can't think of anything else...make sure you click on tv out on your phone

You have the 3 RCA out wire not just a single RCA out, correct?
As mentioned above yellow is not the video, it's red.
You have made the appropriate change in Settings to enable TV Out?
It's also possible that your cable is simply not compatible, unless of course you bought one that was tested already by someone here. Not all of them work, for some reason.
yah I did everything. I thought it might be the Tom I was running. I made sure I did everything. Bit it might just not be compatible

FYI there's a Nokia cable out there that has the correct colors. You can find it on eBay. CA-75u I believe.
CHANGE
change the colors..instead of yellow yellow..red to yellow yellow to red..good luck
I have a 3.5mm to RCA cable that I bought for my Creative Zen X-Fi2 and it works great for the video out on the Vibrant. Monoprice.com has them for a reasonable price.
Just making sure you didn't miss this step. You have to go into settings/Sound & Display/TV Out
You then have to check the TV Out box. This resets every time you reboot the phone so you have to continue changing each time you need it.
Nokia CA-75U
I just got my CA-75U cable in the mail and no matter what I try, I can't get it to work with my Samsung Vibrant.
With all the colors plugged in correctly and music playing, I can hear it on the TV speakers, unplugging white cuts half the sound, unplugging red cuts the other half out.
The strange part is that all I get is one large white zigzagging line halfway down my screen, the REALLY strange part is that it gives me that line no matter which color is plugged into the yellow port!
The TV is on the correct input.. TV Out is indeed enabled.
I have no idea what else to try, could it possibly be the ROM I'm running?
I've got Nero V3 on my Vibrant along with Voodoo enabled.
Any ideas are much appreciated!

Having the exact same problem. Any help would be great.
Just for reference, is this the correct cable? In the comments section some random guy said it worked great on his vibrant so I went with it.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I1D0BW/ref=oss_product
That's why I posted about the CA-75U earlier in the thread. Someone, not on Amazon, said it worked fine too.
Are you perhaps trying to play Avatar? That won't work. It's got DRM.
Well if you were thinking of upgrading to Nero V5 or soon to be V6 you might want to flash back to stock and see if that works.
I have Nero 5 and plugged my non-Nokia cable in, red as video and it's working
For the tv out. I am using a wire set that came with my old motorola zine. You could call tmo and find out where to get a replacement for that phone.

NTSC is used for US made or made FOR US TVs
PAL is for european. not going into details but the difference deals with FPS and power output.
it just sucks how bad tv out looks on my hdtv...i wish there was an option to do it thru hdmi besides buying a video converter box.
frames per second (which is directly related to power output) and resolution are different for PAL tv sets

this issue is something that should be covered under the manufacturer warranty which is > 30 days.
Had mine since 1/7, never had a problem with the jack. Take it back.
EDIT: FYI - I've replaced my iPod with my phone + Subsonic so my headphone jack sees a lot of use.
I would before its too late :/
Will do. Thanks!

Mine was having the same problem connecting to the car radio, but I replaced the cable going to the phone, and the problem went away.
I had the same issue with a pair of headphones, and it turned out that the Jack was bent. Other headphones work fine.
Lint.
If you're like me and it was working fine at first and slowly got worse and worse at holding a connection then it might be lint like it was for me. Shine a flashlight into the jack and try to see any obstruction. I used a bobby pin to fish it all out and it was fixed
Might want to pull the Battery out first. Also a better bet would be a Shop Vac . Use it to clean out the Charger port.
Also ... another culprit i've noticed is phone cases. Some 3.5mm plugs have wider shielding than others, and a larger cord can bump your case and not allow the plug to sit flush. Other than that and lint or some other obstruction, i havnet noticed any problems with any of my jacks on any devices.
I still have the Limited Sprint / HTC headset / headphones I bought when I got my TP2 .
One morning I got up and tried to plug my earphones, and I couldn't! The plug just won't come to the end! I played with screwdriver in audio jack as I thought maybe something got stuck in there, but still the same. Has anyone experienced this problem?
Have you tried with another headset? You might just have a defective phone Jack on either end. If it is the phone, then you will just have to send it to get fixed. If you still under warranty it should be covered.

Yes, I have a lot of earphones and none of them plugged in. I bought it on ebay, so no warranty. No one had this issue?
I have had the same problem. You are not the only one. This problem actually is very annoying. When I hit the play button I assume I would hear it from the ear-phone but nothing happens and then I know the music is playing out via the phone's speaker. This causes embarrassment from time to time.
I normally make sure the battery cover is tightly closed then always insert the ear-phone's jack in while the lead/cable pointing outwards from the phone. In other words, no side insertions. I hope I managed to cross my point about how to insert the ear-phone's jack.
I never had any problems if I followed my own above instructions.
Good Luck!
No, problem is bigger. I cannot insert headphones at my phone, so no connection between phone & headset. That means no way music could play through headset. If anyone had this problem please help me out.
can you see anything "stuck inside "the hole? it should accept the headphone jack its you have to force it or simply jist wont go in its prolly a defect no worries
can be replaced you can purchace the atrix headphone acembally from online
or send the phone in pn warrenty for replacment

My advice, quickly find a kitty in a tree and save it, then help an old lady cross the street. You might even get a merit badge. And maybe that will satisfy this karma...
My headphones work fine. But the adapter has never seated all of the way in the socket the way that I would expect it to. Sorry to hear you are having those problems.

I just bought a cheap on-ear headphone and same thing happened but when I opened the battery cover and put it back on ensuring the top part is tightly secured it then started working again.
Other than something might stuck there, as the other poster mentioned, the battery cover might be causing your problem. Yes, from time to time I felt the jack was not going in but after fiddling with it gently I managed to plug it. Don't use force, try different sides by holding the top of the jack and go clock wise slightly then try it ti plug it, repeat until you find the right angle.
Good Luck!

I had the same problem a few months ago. I could plug the jack in, but the phone would not register any of my headphones. I took a thin pipe cleaner, doused one end in rubbing alcohol and cleaned the inside. Took out a couple gobs of lint and it worked perfectly. Try that. Wait a couple minutes if you do for the alcohol to evaporate before plugging into the jack. Good luck.
I had this issue a few months ago, but like was previously said, it's an issue with the back cover not clicking on properly because there's a very tiny clip that locks in to where the phone jack goes to let the headphone jack clip in the whole way.
Also, because it's constantly exposed outside of the phone, a lot of small dust and crap can get inside, so that can sometimes be a culprit too.
Pocket lint. I had this problem as well. I had pocket lint packed way down in the headphone jack.

So, I cleaned with a spirit my headphone jack, and for like 20minutes I could plug earphones and they were playing nicely from phone, then they started cutting off for some time, and at end again no contact. I tried this procedure a couple of times and as spirit soaks down the problem appears again. Any more suggestions guys? The problem isn't solved

Thank you. This worked perfectly.
Unfortunately too perfectly for me. Now I have a permanent headset logo on my status bar, even when nothing is plugged in. So I can't hear anything out of my ear piece.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?
Apparently i didnt dry enough of the alcohol. Solved my problem by blowing cold air for a few seconds using a hair dryer.
