Backup questions? - Droid Eris Android Development

Hey guys, im new to the rooting / ROM thing but think i might want to root my phone. If i do how can i backup my sd card if something messes up? can i copy the whole sd card onto my computer and if something happens just format it, recopy everything and reboot normaly? or is there another way i need to back stuff up. i want to root but i just want to be sure i can revert / fix it if i mess something up.
Thanks

yea copying everything to your comp from your sd card will be a good way to assure you wouldnt loose anything

G1 wont stay mounted anymore.

Ok I wanted to try apps to SD but didnt really care for it and wanted to convert back to normal. I got rid of my partioned part of my SD but I did nothing in the terminal to revert the actions taken to get apps2sd. When I download apps they go directly on the phone and not the SD card. At some point the apps2sd did work though but after wiping here and there i noticed the effects of it were going(apps going to phone and not sd). But to get to the point whenever I try to mount my phone it works for like a second and the phone says preparing sd card again. For some reason it wont connect to my computer and I'm sure you guys can imagine the trouble that bring me. I have a sd card adapter but I need to be able to mount my phone. Any ideas what went wrong or if its because I didnt revert the actions taken to get apps2sd back to normal? Please let me know anything. Thanks.

ROM is gone

So I installed the Cyanogen mod from RomManager to try it out. The thing is, now my phone is telling me my SD card is damaged and I can't read from it. My backups were on there and I foolishly did not save copies onto my computer.
So, is there anyway to get a stock ROM for the incredible so I can flash that back onto there?

Have you tried booting your phone into recovery.
Then going to nandroid in recovery and choosing your backup to restore?
That damaged message sounds like something you see in rom manager, but you can probably still see your SD card fine in recovery if you haven't tried that yet.
Ditto, except have you tried checking your SD card with a reader straight into the PC? If you can't read it with a reader it may very well be damaged.
If it is actually broken IncredibleRoms (dot) com is usually a good place to look for ROM's.
Looked around and found a stock nandroid backup
incredibleroms.com/roms/stock/
Only other option might be trying to go the RUU route.
This is a rooted stock rom binny made that you can use. Its from a previous thread a few weeks ago

This is just a stock rom with a few tweeks.
It includes SuperUser, busybox, Wireless -N, Facebook has been moved to /data/local so it can be uninstalled, Zipaling and ROM Manager. CityID has been removed, also the internal task killer has been tweeked so no need to have third party task killers.
I dont plan on working too much on this one, but may update in the future.

I would recomend wipeing before installing.

Can't access the card in recovery either. I even took the card out and put it in my computer and can't read it there either.
I found the droid incredible downgrade file for returning to stock without root, I guess I'll have to go this route. I know I can re-root the phone, its just loosing all my apps and data that's painful.
EDIT: or use the rooted rom, thanks kentoe, that definitely saves me some time.
Titanium Backup can take care of the apps and you could pull data to your pc.
Unless the apps and data were on your SD card in which case you'll need some CSI/NCIS tricks to reconstruct your messed up SD.

Yes, I used Titanium Backup for my apps, but unfortunately they were on the card. I'll just have to call it a loss and reinstall my apps one at a time.
Utils for SD recovery
I have a few utils that have been able to recover data from SD cards, flash sticks, CF stuff like that. Look on the net.
Yeah, I somehow actually damaged my friends SD card from his Moto Droid while attempting to root my Incredible. Needless to say he wasn't very happy. So off to google I went and in the morning he had all his files back like it never happened.

[Q] wp7 full backup?

right now, I am quite satisfied with wp7. although changing android roms with titanium backup is easy, is there a way to backup my wp7 rom? probably the whole nand, like nandroid for example? having to reactivate, resync, reunlock and reinstall is a troublesome process....in short, i just want to restore my phone the way it was if i go back to android... anyone?
I've asked this question too and no one responded. Have you found anything?
Unfortunately no. Maybe after the kitchen tools are released? IF they are ever released.... :/
Hey. It's kind of a late response, but I figured out that if I take out my SD card and boot WP7, it booted like it was a new install (no contacts, messages, account info, programs) but when I put my SD card back in, it booted normally. So, I guess all of the info is stored on the SD. So, I think it is possible to create a back up of the encrypted SD card with EASEUS partition manager, and that back up will hold an exact copy of what your phone used to be. So I assume that one could play around with Android roms, and then flash the same WP7 roms and restore the back up on the SD and be set. It's just a theory.

Hmmmm...interesting point. I'll have to try that when NODO/MANGO or whatever is released and see what happens. Worst that can happen is I resync as I would have normally in the first place. Thanks for the info.

Tried it a while ago and it will not work. After you install the sd card you will not be able to restore cause your memory size has changed.(the sd card and os merges) you will receive an error.
I acquired an official developer account for free through the student option after I reinstalled my sd card after nodo.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
I can confirm this. Didn't work for me either.
Thanks. i guess i'll wait until theirs a way to back everything up and reinstall.

[Q] Accidently formated sd card

Hey everybody I accidently formatted my sd card yesterday. I put the sd card in my computer to remove some pics from the phone and add them into the computer. Some how I put it to format and now everything is gone . All my apps seem to still be working, info still in phone, still seem to be rooted and s-off. I was wondering if I needed to add anything into the sd card so everything stays working or it's ok blank?
SD card contents will not effect s-off status. If you had moved any apps to the SD they will have been deleted. You should be fine though. If you want to recover data lost from your SD there are programs out there that can do that for you. Just do a little Google searching and I'm sure yoy could find a trial program or something.

oh ok sounds good..nah I had a bunch of things I really didn't want anymore that was taking up alot of space..is there a way that when I uninstall an app that it erases everything related to it from the sd card because everytime I look in it there's alot of files and folders and I'm not sure if I need them or not so I leave them there and I was runnung out of space. If not it's ok I'll just reformat the sd card when it's almost full but save what I want first.
Use Recuva. It has saved my tail a lot, and is completely free.

SD Card wont affect S-off status at all.. although if you lost your part7backup file, you can't revert back to S-ON again. Some apps throw a bit of their data on the SD Card, but nothing to be extremely worried about.
oh ok..I dont think I would want S-on cuz I like having the freedom of choosing whatever gsm service I want but it's good to know..I'm not really worried about the data from apps on the sd card I just dont like that it's still there after I uninstalled the app and it"s taking up unnecessary space but I guess it's something I have to live wit NO BIGGIE..thanks for everybodies help I appreciate it
