I'm going to buy Gene and read a lot of possitive oppinions abiut it. But there is a discussion on a russion forum www.4pda.ru about SD card problem. As I understood sometimes it looses SD card and everything on it. The files are shown in wrong symbols and even more - sometimes all data are lost. Does anybody had the problemm? know the solution? Thank you.
Get a reputable brand. I once had that problem with a 512MB in Imate JAM, but my Gene has a 1GB Apacer and Ive never had problems. Get a miniSD with an adapter for more versatility.
i have sumtin to tell
hey i bought my gene say three months back.put a 1 gb Transcend SD...but after some days when i took it out and again inserted it...the memory was lost and it was not formatting also....one fine day suddenly my treo recognized the card..but with only 480 MB.....i had to finally buy a new SD for my Gene...
They say SD card should be inserted after soft reset and will work fine. Also there e few guys tested MMC cards and said there wew no problems.
same here

hey i got the same problem to. talk to the HTC CustomerCare. they asked me to get my PPC reflashed. it might be due to some ROM error.
but if u try restarting (soft reset) ur PPC. it will work normally. i have used this technice. it works fine with me.
I recently came to a big problem. my storage card is not working correctly. my ppc takes a lot of time in accessing and reading it and sometimes gets hangs while doing it. i tried formating my device but the problem still exists. then i tried formating the memory card with my PC but again something strange happened. While formatting my pc gave an error msg "Windows Can't Format" or something like tht. i tried to manually delete the contents of my memory card but it says can not access device. I am sure tht my card is not Password lock. i think the problem occured after i used "WM5 Storage" software for my PPC to act as a "Mass Storage Device".
plz some1 tell me how can i fix my memory card.
plz plz plz plz plz help..........
yes, it is definitely a big problem with the SD card problem, i mean not the SD card problem, but the Gene's Problem! i bought it 2 months ago for my wife, comes with a brand new Transcend 1GB SD card, after i've installed all the programs into the SD card, its seems ok at first...BUT, when the Gene go to the standby mode, & u wake up the Gene, the program u have installed in the SD card all GONE!! the device can't find any thing in SD card & it finally hang! it is definitely not bcos i m using lousy brand SD card, i've tried Kingston, Pendrive, Sandisk & it has the same problem! i've called HTC service centre in Malaysia (i m from Malaysia) & they dun even knew about this (& even they gave me taiwan HTC email address, & told me to get an answer from taiwan).....
i have no choice, i have hard reset the device for more than 10 times, believe me, i started my pda phone live 5 years ago, i knew what is hard reset...& i tried more than 5 SD cards... same problem, some of the cards facing difference problem - the data saved in the card became unreadable & weird symbol.
since the service center does not has any solution for it, i have to use my own silly stupid way to prevent the Gene Hang, i have set the device all the time alive & avoid going to standby mode, & the problem solved...never hang again...but...imagine...the battery life ....(sigh).....
i sincerely hope that there is somebody in this forum could help to solve this BIG problem.....
At me too a problem with SD card... Very often on a card some files and folders are renamed in not clear symbols and data vanish.... A problem not only at me.... It at many, and it does not depend on a card memory from insertion Gene...
SD Card got Locked
I installed a software on my Gene, named "WM5 Storage".
it allows u to access ur memory card without activesync, as Mass Storage Device.
after the first use i found my card locked. it was unreadable. my ppc also started hanging. i tried restarting my ppc. now i was able to acces my storage card from file explorer, but it takes around 15-20 minutes and another 15minutes to access the files. when i connect it with my pc, active sync does not detect the SD card. i also tried to format the SD card through a card reader. the card reader reads its root files but couldn't access/open them. when i tried to format it give an error "device not accessible. device not ready.".
i also checked the lock button on the card, it was unlocked. plz some1 help.
plz plz plz..
mee too
GUYS I HAVE ONE CARD WITH ME THAT IS PERFECTLY OK...BUT DOES NOT GET READ IN MY GENE.....IN MY TREO 680 IT SHOWS ONLY HALF MEMORY....AND MY LAPTOP IS ALSO NOT RECOGNISING IT...WAT TO DO....???
I have the same sd card problem.......can anybody tell me the solution?is there same problem with mmc card? if no them i'll buy a new mmc card....plz help me.
Count me in
I had this problem for 5 times and still has it. Actually this happens(based on my experiences and opinion only) when u install some software on the SD card and it damages the file system.
Solution might be not to install apps on SD card or use a RS-DV-MMC which is used in recent Symbian phones.
Give it a try...
And plz post feedback.
Enjoy....
People have been replacing their microSD cards not knowing that the problem is actually in the files and folders..
Ok here it is!
When i scroll through the hTC Sense tabs to music or photos, the applications try to load the thumbs from the Phone/microSD, that's when it suddenly freezes then the microSD vanishes..
I inserted the microSD into my PC and browsed the drive in "Thumbnail view" and guess what happened, it froze.. I figured since the idea was the same in hTC Sense when it tries to load any thumbs..
So i went to the microSD drive again and chose "detailed view" then went into each folder and changed to "thumbnail view" until i found two folders that kept freezing; "Program Files" and "My Music"..
In Program files the only folder that couldn't be deleted definitely had files that were behind the issue.. There was a music album too that froze, i deleted that too...
I backed up my files and formatted the microSD, i had to, because the folders behind the microSD disappearance cannot be deleted even with an "Unlocker"..
So far i'm playing around with my Leo and nothing is happening..
So by viewing the folders on the PC using Thumbnail view, you'll be able to identify the file or folder behind this annoying issue..
I had the same issue
I have (had) Sandisk microSD 16GB card. It was last week that it happened to me. Only backup of good files and re-formatting the card helped.
Today, I was copying 700MB file and suddenly it told me - cant write on a disk. I disconnected cable from the PC, rebooted Leo and SD card was no more present.
I put it into a card reader, tried to format it, but nothing is working. SD card is probably faulty.
So be aware, that that problem might be a first sign before your SD will break.
I think the fault is from some files somewhere in the microSD.. After going through the method i mentioned earlier, up until now my card is fine..

yup right, but be aware. I dont think that normal SD card should perform like that. I am using stock 2GB SD now, and it is ok!

My 16GB microSD is Sandisk and its 100% compatible with this device.. The Leo is doing something when loading the files creating some system files i suppose..

guess what? windows could not load sandisk microSD 16GB and I was already preparing to return it to e-shop, but I tried live cd of ubuntu 9.10.
It can read the card, it formatted it and it is working again! :-D

That's great, so you didn't have to replace it?
But strange, i've always been using the 16GB with my HD and now HD2.. The issue just occurred a week ago..
A day has passed and everything seems fine..
I hope it stays that way..
ok
I got exactly the same problem with my 16G Sandiskin and HD
and found that the problem was a damaged file in my SD
connect your SD to your computer throw card reader, using total commander or whatever, begin coping all SD files and directory to your hard disk, until get a message can't copy "file name", this will be the damage file, unmount the SD and mount it again and delete this file and your SD will be ok
ps: may be you have more than one damage file, try the this method until you can copy all SD files to your hard drive
When you have a write or read problem with a particular file, it usually points to more than just a corrupt file. In my experience with 4 16GB Sandisk microSD, it is the beginning of a failing card. The safest bet is to copy out the good files, reformat in your HD2 and copy the files back. But if it happens too often, it may be time to invest in a new card as your data is of primary concern.
The strange thing is that this usually occurs with the bigger cards, 8GB and 16GB. I never had this issue in the past with smaller cards.
I back up my card weekly or when I have updated large number of files just to be sure I have a valid set in my PC in case the card fails.

I know what you are talking about. Low format may help. I had the same issue with 2GB SD card 3 years ago (had to recover SD card to save few photos) and also on my DLSR with 4GB CF Card (linux helped to read the card). I don´t think it can be damaged so quickly as normal PC HDD, but when it happens often (damaged files on card), it may be a sign of something wrong with the card.
Unfortunately it happened again.. After a month of having everything under control i got the same problem.. The great news is I'm using windows 7 on my PC and when i plug my microSD card via usb reader, i get a choice of scanning and fixing the removable disk...
Now i'm happy without those annoying corrupted files..
Would it be possible for me to copy the entire contents of my 8gb and paste on folder on pc, then put in new 16bb card and paste the lot back onto the new one, would everything work ok? as i have most if not all my apps instlled on my storage card, has anyone done this b4 and is it possible?
Thanks
I've wondered that myself, as long as the new card is properly formated then in theory it should be fine..... never actually done it though so don't take my word for it.
Maybe someone can clear this up, by format properly what do you mean by this?
I have done that twice without any problems. Just rember to show all files in the explorere on the PC.
I have previously done it twice with no problems but i just swapped my 16gb to a 32gb and it wouldnt have none of it????? I have had to return the card thinking its faulty? But i will do the exact thing once i receive my replacement

I got a Sandisk 16Gb card and though it was faulty as HD2 wouldn't read it. Examining it on PC showed it was formated as 'exFAT'. Reformatted to 'FAT' and copied data across and now all OK.
i've done this on every winmo phone i have had where a sd card upgrade was required. Just make sure you have the phone off while to do it and use a card reader just to be safe
dont have a card reader, know how to format to fat on pc via disc drive mode, will just copying all to pc, and ensuring all files are showing and not hidden then would this be ok?
the 32gb came formatted in fat32? I have been told that my replacement will be here tomorrow
yeah if you format the card to fat your gonna damage the card. stick to fat32 and use a 32KB allocation unit size. you do it be finding the drive in my computer, right clicking and hitting format. Setup your options and go.
Card readers are best for this type of work and you can pick one up less than £10 from amazon.co.uk. Just make sure it says it supports SDHC cards.

Urgent!!!
I don't know if this is a bug or not. I used to copy files by selecting the disk drive mode. After that I will safely remove the device under windows before disconnecting the usb cable.
The problem is sometimes after copying files to sdcard, the SD card will become read only under android. For example I cannot copy or create files using file explorer. When using camera app it says "Unable to save file to SD card due to insufficient file permissions". When using album it says "SD card unmounted or not present".
After the problem occurs I cannot access the SD card via disk drive mode anymore, unless I physically removed and reinsert back the SD card.
The strange thing is I can still access the SD card in PC via card reader with no problem. I can also view the existing files in the SD card under android (eg opening .apk in SD card)
I tried flashing the ROM for 2 times and with a different SD card. Also I formatted the SD using Panasonic SD formatter and partitioned properly. The problem still appear after several access under disk drive mode. Million thanks!!!
I've noticed the same thing in the DL DesireZ v3.3 nand ROM...
But now since I've switched to skink_Clean_Desire_v1.0 I don't have the problem any more...
No problem solver I know... but just to confirm the issue!
It was also read-only when I had disk drive mode chosen and connected to my win xp pc!
so when I deleted files over the computer they still existed...
I always remove the sd card securely!...
hope this helps a little bit!
Memory cards get weak after awhile...Had d same issue with a Memory card...it works well on WinMo but messes up just as u described in android after a format n a few read & writes...Froyo has also been reported to ruin memory cards...Summary, there's no real solution as i've googled all over....My advice is for you 2 get a new memory card, capacity & class (d higher d number, d better its read & write speed) is up to you...I'm using a class (4) 8GB card n its been alright.
P.S. Stop transferring files via d disk drive option in android..stick to using memory card readers or d MAGDLR function (though some also report file errors with dis).

Thanks for your reply
But how come windows and wm can read and write normally but it doesn't work in android?
Also, I have been using NAND and its disk drive option to transfer file in Cotulla's desire stock Rom and there is no problem at all. Would the problem be related to app2sd since the card has a ext4 partition?
do a chkdsk on your micro-sd card. let it repair and then don't delete the LOST folder in your sd card. ^^ you will be able to mount as read/write after this

Try a chkdsk as well...But in my experience, i did it several times & it only acted as a band-aid...As it reverts to read only ltr on...

So is this a SD card problem or ROM problem?
Previously I had been using Cotulla Desire stock Rom for a month and the problem didn't exist.
I don't mind buying a new SD card if it can completely solve the problem. Thanks
Hello world,
I'll try to make it as short and accurate as possible. I have an S5 SM-G900F and until recently I was using a 32 GB micro sd card (formated in Fat32) that i had on my S2.
A while back the card just unmounted and died (i tested in another phones + on 2 pcs through card reader).
1st i bought a 64 GB card on ebay (a cheap one) and when receiving it I had 2 issues: the card was slow to read/write and no matter what method was used and how many files were transfered, after a reboot it would only display the first +/- 7.5 GB. The remaining folders remained, but with no files in them. I thought the card was defective and got myself a new one but went for a 128GB this time Read/write speed were correct but i still had this +/- 7.5 gb limit on it. I do not have any phones to test this time, due to the capacity, but on several computers, the size of the microsd card was correct and when connected through USB OTG when i had more that 10gb files on it, they displayed and played just fine (movies and music). It appears that the phone just "deletes" files going over the 7.5 GB threshold. I used the following methods to copy files to the card:
1. USB cable and MTP.
2. Card reader
3. Over wifi using ES File Manager
I thought that maybe the stock kitkat rom i had was the problem so i upgraded to a stock lollipop 5.0 (spanish one) but i have the same issue. I even tried unrooting the phone.
Has anyone ever encountered this kind of issue? Does anyone have any suggestion to try resolving this?
Feeling desperate here
can anybody help? please

Hi :good:,
Sorry to hear that you are faced with a Defective SD Card. Stop buying from ebay as the sellers most of the times are not authentic and the electronic products you buy will be fake from inside but looks absolutely genuine from outside.
Currently ONLY 'SanDisk' and 'Samsung' produces 128GB mmc card.
Try to reformat the Card as Full Format in Windows and check if it works.
if not then Delete the Card partition from Windows. Put it in the phone and it will be identified as Damaged Card. Go ahead with clicking the message and the Phone will Auto Partition and Auto Format the card.
If its still not working... then you are married with a Damaged Card.
Check if you are accessing the SD Card Folder over WiFi not the Phone internal memory Folder which is anyways will be much lesser. KitKat do not allow accessing the SD Card to 3rd Party Apps but there are few tricks here in XDA (search for it) which will overcome that.
Happy Troubleshooting.
