Some Android phones are now shipping with OLED displays, such as Nexus One, the Droid Incredible, and the Samsung Galaxy. Organic LED displays have separate pixel elements for each color channel (red, green, and blue), and each channel has a different efficiency.
Take, for example, the Nexus One. If powering only the red pixels at full intensity draws a current “i”, then powering all green pixels draws “1.5i”, and all blue pixels “2i”. (These ratios are derived from empirical measurements, and don’t hold in all cases.) Also, it’s worth noting that OLED displays don’t have backlights like LCD, meaning that darker colors draw less power.

Filtering to show only red pixels only requires 35% of the original baseline OLED panel current, on average. Adding back the baseline current, the best case overall is about 42% of the original system current, effectively doubling the battery life. Also, showing only red pixels doubles as an awesome night vision mode, perfect for astronomy.
If you’d like some other colors added back in, the amber and salmon filters can help, while still offering about 56% of the original system current. It’s also worth noting that the Nexus One OLED display uses a PenTile pixel layout, giving it twice as many directly-addressable green pixels as red and blue. Thus the Green-only filter results in the visually sharpest text.

I think it's a neat idea, it's a hardcore battery-saving trick and would surely make you look like a geek, but I could live with my screen being only red or green if I was going to write a text, read some rss feeds or basic text-only things like that.
Although I would be quite worried about shortening the life of the red AMOLED channel by doing this for a long time...
I saw that article on engadget today, i too would be very willing to go all red for that kinda current savings.
just read about this on androidandme, i would love to have this implemented for night viewing and what not.
I would think that you could also save quite a bit of battery power just by using white text on a black background for web pages and ebook reading instead of black on white.

I too would like this feature. Just switch the black with white text to black with red text.
Red text against a black background is supposedly easier for your eyes at night, too. I can't find a source to back that up, but i seem to recall that the longer wavelength keeps your eyes dilated, thus better able to see at night.

For some of the uses I'd like to use the OS for, this would have huge benefits.
I have also heard that the lifespan of the blue color in an amoled screen is significantly shorter than red and green, so maybe it could also be used to compensate this a little.
I really would love to see this included in a rom, let's hope some of the gurus here find it interesting too!

great! I was always reluctant to use cyanogenmod due to its (perceived) battery usage, now this could be gone

I'm fed up with the flashy effects and background picture/pattern nonsense of the WM5 default blue theme. I'm looking for something minimalist, that doesn't hog as much resources. Any ideas where to look for something like that?
Most downloadable themes I've seen have colorful backgrounds and shaded menubars etc. I don't need that crap. All I need is a black background, thin, single-coloured menubars and windowframes, no animations, you get the idea.

I love having the great screen for watching movies or browsing the web with Opera, or the Wi-Fi or the 3G for on-the move connectivity. It's all good. But it makes my heart cry to see all this potential crippled by the resource hogging OS that's running on it.

i love this device as well, for precisely the reasons you mention, but to tell the truth i don't believe a "light-weight" skin would improve performance all that much, if at all.
it certainly is sluggish, and i wish it ran faster, but even so it's better than carrying a phone, an ipod and a camera around in my bag...
I think that acctually we should have white background to save more power. Black colour on TFT screens is created by put max power to pixels. White colour dotn consume more power that is needed to light a fluorescent tube in the display which is turn on anyway. just my 0.02$

Are you sure about that? Isn't a white pixel getting max. power?
I am sure. In LCD screens, when turn on (not in some king of power saving mode) fluorescent lamp is always glowing so to get shades and dark colour You ll actually have to "cover" light with LCD pixel. For LCD crystals to block the light they must be applied with maximum power. So if You have whole white screen theres no crystall blocking light and screen consumes energy only to light fluorescent lamp. If You have dark picture lcd display have to draw more energy not only to light fluorescent lamp but also to max out energy to all pixels to block the light.
Here is the classic black today skin that I use. Its only 2kb and is extremely minimalist. Hope this helps!

The exact inverse of what you said is correct.
Basically, in order to achieve the WHITE colour the Red, Green and Blue elements need to be lit consequently needing MORE power than would be required to achieve the Black colour which wouldn't require any colour elements to be lit.

As seen by the NoLED app over in the dev section, and in a few other places on the net, people are finding that when they display a black image on their amoled/samoled screens in a dark room there is still light emitted by the display. it is not truly black
I would like to know why!
One thing i hear is about image compression and signal noise causing the pixels to not display #000000 black and instead a variant of black/grey causing the pixel to become lit.
This problem is not an issue during the day, i can't tell the difference when my screen is displaying black or off. but what it does effect is battery life.
If the screen isn't powering down its pixels then it is not saving anywhere near as much power as it could do

I knew about the pentile problem before buying, however i am not dissatisfied with the display at all. Infact if i did not read up about it i would not have realised there was anything different with the screen.
Text is clear and sharp, images are vibrant, and colours seem true with no issue of pink problems like the desire
looool, look at any lcd screen(tv whatsoever) and you don't have true black, because the backlight is on. Only the best LED LCD screens in TV world have FULL LED backlight that can dim the leds from parts of the screen that are fully black in the processed image.

yup, if you take apart your LCD watch, phone, laptop or monitor
you'll see 2 layers, first layer the LCD/TFT/AMOLED/SAMOLED/etc whatever new technology screen you can think of name it here.
then the bottom layer is pretty much like a light bulb/white led/ccfl or whatever you want to call it to light up the first portion of the screen.
most devices you can control the 2 separate pieces separately via "screen" and "back light"
you'll noticed that usually on software options what specifically lets you control both indedpendly.
Eh.. Yes But the SGS hade OLED screen. So it should be able to turn pixels completly off. My guess is that each led has some very small current applied to it possibly to speed up response off screen.
But it come close to true blacks..

oled screens have no backlight, thus no backlight bleed.
That means that this is a software issue, unless the screen not powering down completely is intentional
Software issue and nothing more.
Open up the calculator, drag down the numpad, hide the 2 stripes (status bar and numpad drag bar) in the top and bottom of the screen, and tell me if you see any lighting.
There's absolutely nothing.
there is still light emitted. cover up the top and bottom bar with your hands, go into a completely dark room then look into the center of the screen.
There is a uniform glow, just like when looking at a black image in the gallery or browser
It's actually more noticeable if you look AWAY. The peripheral area of your retina will be able to pick up a very feeble amount of light. Feeble, sure, but it's there nonetheless.

The problem is that the way it is supposed to work is that if you display black, the screen shouldn't use any energy at all but it is and people can see it and so is using precious battery charge.
The issue is... that apps like noled which were going to display a red dot on the screen to let people know if they had mail waiting or whatever wouldnt use much power at all because they were displaying mainly a black screen but it isnt actually black and still using light so still chews through the power..
hope that made sense.. but that is why people are interested in it..

I thought people were seriously complaining about image quality.
I have the Samsung wave and it uses the same screen technology and I can tell that it does not have true blacks pixels are still lit, I can easily tell that its on and totally off there is a very faint trace amount of light produced..
Since I first got this device and turned it on I have been impressed with the display. I am kind of partial to AMOLED diplays and am, thus, a bit biased. What surprised me was that it "appeared" sharper than the display on the Nexus One. Considering it is slightly larger and at the same resolution I just assumed that it wasn't using the PenTile arrangement - yet it appears that it does in fact use the same subpixel arrangement as the screen on the Nexus One. My point is... now I've forgotten my point. Basically that I am more than satisfied with this display.
As far as the black issue is concerned I have no idea. There must be some reason considering that was one of the supposed strengths of this technology (i.e. true blacks and lower power consumption).

The thing is, amoled screens were advertised as having true blacks and having the pixels off when displaying black. this is clearly not the case
It's not an issue with the technology. The screen doesn't have a back lighting panel, so i think it's more of a problem of what shade is default defined as "black" in the system, or something with any current running through the screen.
Well considering the screen doesn't turn off when displaying a 100% black bitmap image, its safe to say that the say that the pixels NEVER turn themselves off during use when displaying black
Could be the screen isn't calibrated properly, or they lied to us about the tech(wouldn't be the first time).
While its not "true black" it is defenently beyond what any backlit screentype can do regarding blacks.
Except perhaps for the retina display forged by god himself

A few of my main issues with this phone are as follows:
-green tint on screen
-somewhat insensitive touch sceen (Evo screen is a lot more responsive and less prone to miss touches)
-very short battery life 5-6 hours of my typical use) My Evo battery lasts twice as long.
-radio issues
-cheap, slippery plastic (prone to scratch and fly out of your hand)
-speaker can in-call volume not very loud. (though it does sound good, imo)
Overall the Nexus does not have that premium feel that a "Google Experience" flagship phone should have IMO. The LG Optimus (free on contract) feels better, and has rubberized case. If LG can do that on a cheap entry level Android phone, why can't (money bags) Google?
Obviously these are just my opinions, but it seems like Google will lose out on sales when their *Flagship* phone feels cheap, but costs $550 off contract! Expecially when it it sitting next to phones which feel a lot more sturdy, do not have green/yellow tinted screens, etc.
I never liked the Epic because it feels cheap and hollow. The Nexus does not feel hollow, but is does feel just as cheap. Hopefully for the next Google phone they will get a better hardware partner!
The biggest thorn in my Nexus S experience still remains the typing, and more specifically the double-letter glitch with the first letter of words. It's ridiculous. I'll get sentences like this, "Hey Bob, hhow is it going ttoday?" Frequently. Then sometimes it'll even repeat the first two letters of a word, for example, like "ththis." This becomes especially obnoxious with two letter words, like "I'm walking toto the park."

My screen looks absolutely spectacular.
My battery life ABSOLUTELY BLOWS AWAY my Evo battery life. I go all day (and sometimes into the next day) on one charge STOCK, whereas I had to undervolt and mod the **** out of my Evo to get maybe 10 hours.
I did find typing easier on my Evo, but I've always attributed it to the larger screen.

I agree with all the points here. I've only had my Nexus 2 days but it's far superior to the Evo. It's faster, smoother, slicker, and has noticeably longer battery life. My only complaints are the lack of a notification light (which, honestly, I've not missed at all) and low external speaker volume.
I noticed the strange green or yellowish tint to the screen as well. I noticed if you turn the brightness all the way up it helps. Or if you're on CM, use a theme that display battery and signal in a color other than green in the status bar.
My one biggest complaint is really how noticeable pixels are on letters and some images. I was looking at some other phones and I found the screens to look a little more crisp. (Is this attributed to a higher resolution or PPI?)
The next point that bugs me is the body. Yes, it's gorgeous, yes it's light and easy to handle... but it -does- scratch and ding easily.
In terms of differences in screen colors (tints - some are green, some beige, etc), battery life, etc., these things go to show the inconsistencies in this cheap Samsung hardware.
I know it is easy to pick up a new phone and feel like wow, this thing is awesome. But once I saw all the issues with this Nexus, and went back to the Evo...while heavier, the Evo feels much better, and is a much better experience overall. From typing, to sound quality to screen sensitivity, scratch resistance, LEDs, larger screen, etc. The only thing I really like more on the Nexus is the camera - while lower resolution is has less noise, and the edges of the lens are sharper than the Evo's.
While I do not care about 3D images, I am now looking forward to the Evo 3D, which is thankfully narrower than the Evo 4g.
Anyway, to each his own. I am not trying to convince anyone to agree with me. Just stating where I stand.

It's because of the pixel matrix. AMOLED is a fundamentally different technology than LCD - LCD panels push a white backlight through a grid of color-changing pixels whereas AMOLED basically consists of a grid of LEDs that emit their own light. It's a very new technology and obviously it has a bit of room to mature.

I agree that the pixels are visible for some reason on the Nexus. It is not a deal breaker, but it is surprising when you read so many people saying how awesome the screen is. (to answer your question, higher resolution would mean LESS visible pixels.)
And while turning up brightness does help with the tint, my battery reading states that at times the screen is consuming more than 80% of the battery! ouch. Right now it says Display=66%)
And many reviews refer to the tinted LCD - it drives me mad. I am a photographer, and so maybe I am more sensitive to it than some.
I think the body of this thing would be helped hugely if if was the same shape, weight and size, but made of better materials! And the slippery plastic makes it NEED a case according to me, and with a silicon case it is LARGER than an Evo. (same width, but taller... Better build materials would solve the need for the case)
It only bothers me when the screen is on its highest brightness setting and when I'm reading white text on black. Otherwise, I think it displays things pretty nicely. I only notice some pixels around a few images. I bought this on May 14th, 14 days short to exchange it out for an Evo3D. I'm kind of on the fence about it though... On one hand, I think it's a really nice phone (but maybe it's not for me?) On the other, I can't picture myself really needing an Evo3D, but if the display and signal are better... who knows?
(Off topic: If I return or exchange this nexus do I have 30 days with the new phone? I may get a temporary if I decide to do that)
Gmap, yes your 30 days starts over, but they may charge you $35 for "restocking." Though there will probably not be a fee if you exchange it for the same phone.

The 3d screen will be more contrasty and higher resolution than the current Evo...and the new phone's shape is more narrow as well.
It's really starting to grow on me. Don't get me wrong, anyone, I think the Nexus is a great phone but maybe not for me.
you can see pixels because the nexus's amoled screen actually has lower resolution compared to the LCD version, AMOLED has a pentile pixel layout, which means it has half the red and blue pixels compared to the lcd one.

You are correct that the difference is due to AMOLED vs LCD, but the resolution is the same on each, 800x480.

Each "pixel" on the Nexus S screen has 2 subpixels: one green and one red or blue. The pattern goes Green Blue Green Red Green Blue Green Red etc
Each "pixel" on an LCD screen has 3 subpixels: one green, one red, one blue. The pattern goes Green Blue Red Green Blue Red etc.

Got it. But, the resolution is still 800x480 on each device. Each device displays 384,000 pixels at a time regardless of "sub-pixel" structure, right?

The human eye is most sensitive to green, especially for high resolution luminance information. Thus the RG-BG scheme [AMOLED] creates a color display with one third fewer subpixels than a traditional RGB-RGB scheme [LCD] but with the same perceived display resolution.

Each pixel on an LCD can display any color.
Each pixel on an AMOLED screen can display either any combination of green\red OR any combination of green\blue.
It's a subtle difference, but it is a difference and it's why the Nexus S screen can look a little weird when you look closely, particularly at complex color patterns, especially when talking grays. On an AMOLED screen, an individual pixel can't be gray.

I definitely notice. My opinion is the vivid colors and amazing contrast make the trade off totally worth it and I prefer the AMOLED.

I've never let "iCoyote" running over 30 minutes.
Yet, I have a huge "Burn-In".
(on a I9100)
Photos (the last photo shows you how is "iCoyote" to compare with the screen burning).
My S GS II is now to the after-sales service since yesterday.

that does look really bad but the thing is if you are using that in the car and its infront of the sun as well it will get extremely hot...hopefully now that you have took it back they will sort it for you...but using the phone intensively it will get hot...just like computers or laptops even playstation..use them long enough they do start getting hot my friend..all the best hope it wont happen again
Dont these mobile screens have any threshold temperature values to turn off when reaching such temperatures???

Samsung sells a car holder but if you use it, you kill your phone...
I've never used it more than 30 minutes in a row... And my screen is burnt...

Nothing to do with heat, research amoled displays. The more you use a particular color the less bright over time the color pigment will be. Blue lasts the shortest, then green then red.
On my old galaxy s, the clock made a set of "burnt in" pixels in its place. On an all blue screen, the clock had obvious burn in, green screen less noticeable, red not noticeable. One idea could be to lower the brightness to reduce the effect, but it WILL happen to some degree. For me it isn't noticeable unless I look for it...
The ring you see is actually not "burn in" in the sense of old CRTs or plasma, in fact its the opposite. With burn in, if blue "burns in" you always see blue. Amoled is the OPPOSITE. The reason the ring above appears to be redish-green is because the blue is "depleted" more so than red or green. As I said before the colors deplete at different rates, thus blue will burn out sooner than green, green sooner than red. So for the ring you see above, on a screen meant to be 100% white, your "ring" will be maybe 80% blue, 95% green, 100% red based on how much brightness each sub-pixel has lost.

I know the sun can be responsable but the problem is not present with a GPS device or many phones.
Samsung sells a car holder but if you use it, you kill your phone...
I've never used it more than 30 minutes in a row... And my screen is burnt...

On my old galaxy s, the clock made a set of "burnt in" pixels in its place. On an all blue screen, the clock had obvious burn in, green screen less noticeable, red not noticeable. The ring you see is actually not "burn in" in the sense of old CRTs or plasma, in fact its the opposite. With burn in, if blue "burns in" you always see blue. Amoled is the OPPOSITE. The reason the ring above appears to be redish-green is because the blue is "depleted" more so than red or green. As I said before the colors deplete at different rates, thus blue will burn out sooner than green, green sooner than red. Thank you for this answer. Now, I understand that the screen is "used" and not burnt.
Always using auto brightness.
I can see a difference in the notification bar area when I put the phone in landscape, eg in the browser.
I've got the phone about 3 months and a half ago.. I've pretty used the phone. Using auto brightness.

That means any app that stays open (i.e. Car Home) can damage your screen. I had no idea, thanks. At least Car Home has the screen 90% black...
Thank's for the heads up and I will try not to use blue no more. (I did not think it would make a screen "burn out" so fast.) My 5 year old 32in Lcd hdtv I had dimed out to the point were it started becoming hard to see movies with dark themes. (I now have a 46in LED tv)
yep. I have Samsung Omnia II - first Samsung phone with AMOLED display. And noticed that time that blue pixels wear very fast.
It's pretty similar to plasma displays.

Yeah, a little research on AMOLED screens will reveal their struggles with finding blues that last anywhere near as long as green, much less red. Since it's an organic compound in the end, it's going to have a somewhat limited lifespan. How long it'll really last is going to vary by use, brightness, and luck of the draw.

That's a bit off-putting really but I'm glad I found out about the screen issue. I'm having a real to-and-fro battle trying to decide which phone to buy, Sensation or GSII. Each have their pros and cons.
when i had my mobile for like 3 days i was playing fruit ninja at highest brightness and all the slashing on the screen after 3-4 min i had a warning that screen temperature is high and it reduced brightness automatiacally but nothing happened to screen

My GS is almost 2 years old, but the screen is perfect. I guess that's because I set the screen the lowest bright unless I use it outside. Even though it's lowest bright, the screen is bright enough to do almost everything. I love superamoled.

A respectable night docking app must do two very important things right:
a) must lower brightness to minimum
b) must move the image left/right/top/bottom by a few pixels every so often , to minimize strain on pixels.

Just so no one gets confused here: "Organic" in OLED does not mean "material came from once-living organism, or is a product of decay". It instead means "made from an organic compound" - where "organic compound" is a material that contains carbon. Another example of an organic compound is diamond. Carbon is basically everywhere
I have terrible usage from PowerAMP in car mode. Just got my USB jig though. Will most likely send it in for replacement.

Didn't have room to fit the term "differences in technology" in the title. Also an objective pluses and minuses of each technology.
Please don't turn this thread into a bashing of different phones/displays. Lets respect all opinions :victory: I like to know the ins and outs of this stuff for the job .
For instance, I have read that AMOLED can have overly apparent pixels at lower resolutions and that the more often you look at black on the phone, the more battery you will save.
I, personally speaking, tend to enjoy AMOLED screens whenever I upgrade people to S3s vs. lumia 920 or iphones or HTCs.
Lumias lack vibrance to an almost unrealistic point for me. I can certainly understand if someone disagrees, however.
Iphones/ Ipads have great displays, though I find that I have to keep the brightness of them very high to keep viewing enjoyable.
HTCs are the most realistic color wise to me, though personally speaking I enjoy the contrast of AMOLEDS more. I will say, however, the pictures do not do the HTC One display justice. I haven't seen an S4 in person yet, though the HTC One easily trumps its predecessors in vibrance and clarity and is currently my favorite display, even over the S3. We'll see how that works out whenever I see S4.
What are battery saving tips for instance that I could give my customers with all brands for the customers (other than obviously higher brightness = less battery life)? Would it make sense to say that AMOLEDS burn more battery with green because of a greater amount of green sub pixels? Stuff like that.

AMOLEDs over saturate colors by default (although now you can tune it to be closer to real color reproduction if you so wish) which makes more things "pop out". AMOLEDs also do much better with black background, and in fact, I find it the best when watching movies/shows. Their weakness comes a bit with whites which keeps them from a better potential brightness, and they also suffer risk of screen burn-in (Less of a problem as long as you don't keep your screen turned on for hours when you're not using it).
Some battery saving tips:
-Turn off features you're not using. It normally goes without saying but I've met so many people who just want the complete experience who keep everything turned on and then complain because their battery goes to crap even when they're not using said features all that much.
-Beware background running Apps and Apps in general that require constant data checks. It's worth taking a few minutes to identify what these are and whether they're worth keeping and when to disable them.
-Another biggie of course is constant 3G/4G connection. Apps like Tasker and Automagic allow you to avoid constant signal locking with towers that drains your battery when you're not using any of the data.
Those are about the basics. It would be a good opportunity to point out, at least when pitching the Galaxy S4, that since it has a removable battery there's always the option of keeping a spare one that can be popped in when there's no more charge left. This would also happen to be a good time to sell them an extra battery if you keep it stocked. Oh yeah, and please, please, please direct customers towards useful apps. Again, I've met too many people with phones who just go with stock apps and never browse the Play store. There are so many useful apps on there, especially when it comes to managing your phone and taking advantage of all its features.

I tend to recommend two apps along with always restarting/ turning off your phone at least once a day. The apps I recommend are advanced task killer and 1tap cleaner for clearing cache. I recommend them based on their overall simplicity. If you know any simpler/ more effective apps please let me know.
Keep in mind that 95% of customers that come into the store find even connecting to password connected wifi complicated. They are hardly as computer/ UI intuitive as we are concerning apps and phone settings go. If it requires more than three intuitive clicks (not including the click to open it) we generally see it as a no go for recommendations. Lord knows how much we hate how complicated explaining port settings are to explain when people run into issues setting up their emails (Iphone 4/4s's are NOTORIOUS for this.. also if you have a bellsouth email, get a new one. They're plagued with problems) so that they don't have to come into the store every time a glitch occurs and an email becomes unresponsive.
I only understand the screen techs in "layman's terms" if you will, but here goes...
Traditional smartphone screens (HTC, iPhone etc.) are LCDs - liquid crystal displays. There is one big white backlight, and liquid crystals switch on and off to filter out different colors. Each subpixel (red, green, blue) can be adjusted to different levels for each pixel to create every color.
OLED screens, specifically AMOLED from samsung, stand for organic LED. The screen is literally made up of tiny tiny LEDs that are individually turned on or off and adjusted in brightness. This means when you see red, the red subpixels are on, and the blue and green ones are off.
I'm not sure why, but as of now, LCDs work better outdoors. The maximum brightness and reflectivity provide a brighter image on for example the HTC one compared to the S4. On the other hand, AMOLED produces more vibrant colors (I'm sure you heard the phrase "they pop out"), and I don't know why that happens either.
Also on AMOLED, when you see a lack of color (black, for instance), the pixels are OFF. This means that looking at black is exactly the same as when the phone is turned off. That is why you get an infinite contrast ratio; pure black is pure black. This is also why AMOLED gives a better battery life when looking at most images, especially black and dark ones. Conversely, the LCD will use the same power if it is on no matter what it is displaying. If it is displaying anything, it is fully on, as that big backlight covers the entire screen, with the dark pixels blocking it. This means that some light will "bleed" through the black pixels, making them appear slightly lit. The contrast ratio is a factor here, because some screens show less white when they are supposed to be black. When looking at mostly white images (Web browsing, for example), LCDs give better battery life because when you are looking at white on an AMOLED, every single subpixel is on, which consumes a ton of power. For the most part, though, unless you do heavy browsing or have a white-themed phone, AMOLED will generally give a better battery life.
The part about greens is entirely based on other aspects of the display. Most of Samsung's AMOLED displays are in the pentile matrix, which means that instead of three subpixels per pixel (RGB), you get two alternating types of pixels with two subpixels each - RG and BG. While the green pixels are slightly smaller, there are still twice as many, and this layout makes the overall image quality worse than the RGB matrix. In the GS2, Samsung used super AMOLED plus, which changed the pixel layout to RGB. This made the screen look really good, but they switched back to pentile with the GS3 because it is currently not possible to make AMOLED RGB screens with that high of a resolution. However, at 1080p, it is pretty hard for most people to be bothered by the pentile matrix. Most LCDs, aside from those found in Motorola phones for some stupid reason, use RGB.
