Screen scratchability? - EVO 4G General

Hey guys I have the Evo with full invisible shield but it does*** make the screen less responsive especially with swipes of your finger across the screen
I'll keep the sides and back protection on but I'm thinking of taking off the acreeb. Is it good scratch proof ? I watched video of a gut with a razor and other stuff. But I want to know your opinion .
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

Get one of the harder plastic type screen protectors. I had the InvisibleShield but hated the rubbery feel. I am now using the htc one and it feels 100 times better when using the touchscreen.

i thought these screens were glass. It's not like older smart phone plastic types. Because of this its much harder to scratch, making it unnecessary to use screen protector.
but it is more susceptible to shattering on dropping.

I, too, want to get rid of my invisible shield and am wondering about scratches and also wondering about finger prints. I constantly have to wipe my invisible shield but its pretty easy. Does the same go for glass?

my screen has a very small scratch on it. i believe i got it from sprint this way. just noticed it the other day. definitely NOT completely scratch proof.

I thought that you would pretty much have to use a diamond to scratch the glass screen?

No scratches on mine yet, and I lay it on the screen and don't really worry about it since I saw the scratch test video.

I am in LOVE with Ghost Armor. Very smooth and slick. not rubbery like invisishield. Lifetime warranty!

I have a small scratch also but I know I did somehow because it wasn't there when I bought it.
How I did it I have no clue..never dropped or anything.
Its pretty small and nobody sees it and I barely can but this baby will definitely scratch that's for sure..

I got mine from sand but its beyond unnoticeable.
I'll tuff it out lol.
That and being dropped should be your biggest concerns
Swyped from my Evo 4G

the bottom part of my phone where the buttons are has a bunch of tiny scratches
i must've accidently had it in my pocket with some coins or something
it's noticable in the light but when the screen on it's pretty much not there but I just bought a crystal clear screen protector because of this.

I've been without a screen protector since it came out. I just keep it in it's own separate pocket and have no problems at all.

Me three. The only things that will scratch glass are something harder than glass like a diamond ring, or sand.

IMO Phantom skinz are superior to invisible shield and best skins ever, but I have never tried ghost armour.
The reason I like phantom skinz is because their skin is totally clear, without the "orange peel" and its also smoother than IS, when you drag your finger across the screen it feels a lot more like glass instead off the rubbery feel that IS has.
Best skins ever is a lot like phantom skinz. Except the adhesive lets go too easily on BSE. On my ipod touch BSE only lated a couple of months, but my PS has been going strong for 3 or 4 months with no signs of peeling yet.
All that said, I don't have any skin on my evo, just a screen protector I got at the sprint store. Make no mistake though, anything harder than the glass on the phone will scratch it, including sand, so a screen protector is a necessity IMO.

Glass screen with/without a screen protector

As you know the Hero has a special coating on the screen, and through the first few days of use i found it awesome. Finger prints are never really much or a problem. But being afraid that the glass screen might get scratched i put on a screen protector but now sensitivity seems a little ( tiny ) bit less & the fingerprints are quite horrible. So just wondering who here uses it without the protector & does is scratch easily ? Comments welcomed
you do not need a screen protector for glass screen phones, such as the Hero or iPhone. My Hero has been getting a rough treatment for about 4 months now and not a scratch to be seen.
I got one from boxwave.com (Anti glare one)
http://www.boxwave.com/accessories/htc-hero-screen-protectors_3636.htm
It helps with smudges as well.
What screen coating are you talking about? White Hero has teflon coating on the casing which has nothing to do with screen, I believe.
I am not sure that Hero actually has got a glass screen. If so, I think that screen protector is just pointless.
If it actually has got a plastic screen, I would not ruine my phone with screen protectors. Phones are meant for us to use.

Anyway, a screen with very minor scratches is not only more sensitive than a screen with protector, but better looking too. Bigger scratches, well, a protector won't protect from those.
imo a screen protector is pointless...ive been treating my hero rly badly and theres not even a tiny scratch...i can even fall drunk on the road with ur hero in hand and it doesnt break (tested)

theres an anti-fingerprint coating on the hero. Makes smudges harder to get on it and makes it very easy to clean it of. Thanks for the comment btw

i tried it before but didn't like how it detorriate the brilliance of the screen.
I was gonna get a screen protector for mine. But all they had at the time were the universal kind. And I knew better then to fall into that. But its been a week and not a scratch on it. I try not to put other objects in the same pocket and take notice when I'm doing something that may put the phone in danger. Making sure to remove it from harms way. But yeah... I don't think ill fall into the screen protector money pit with this phone. That's my opinion though. I spent a lot of cash on those things. Prolly enough that I could've just used my insurance and got a refurbished .

i have the white hero and about the screen, i thought there was a screen protector on it already when it came out of the box? doesnt it?
i tried peeling the corners a bit but not too much cuz i didnt want the corners to curl up and not stick anymore, and eventually it'll bug me and i'll have to rip the whole thing off (happened before) so i just left it alone and assumed theres a screen protector on the screen

how does everyone find this concept in practice? In the last few weeks the phobic part of it seems to be failing, or I need to wash my hands more often... just seems to be more dirty finger smudges hanging around until I give it a good wipe with a screen chamoise

Oh the fingerprints will still show up but I just wipe it off with my hand (a firm swipe up the screen) and it's as good as new.
The idea is that the oils do sit on top, but they aren't sticking so you can just wipe them off again.
Yeah i always am able to see the fingerprints but a swift wipe and theyre gone. I also always find that when i bring the phone out of my pocket the screen is perfectly cleaned every time. I like it
Mine has a very small (5mm) scratch. No idea how it happened
I too have a small scratch, about 3mm, in the middle-upper-right. No big deal, but its there if you look for it. It's a white Hero, if it matters.
Those scratches, on the screen?!
I have a tiny scratch on my screen too! It's over the black part next to the branding though so it's not a problem. I purchased a screen protector after this happened though, just to be safe.
I use a screen protector on mine (and a gel case) and I haven't noticed any problems with it being less sensitive.
When I first got the phone (G2) before I put the protector on I noticed the screen looked rubbish because it had fingerprints all over it....
I'm happy to use a screen protector to protect against scratches.... I wouldn't risk without as I want this baby to stay pristine
I like naked gadgets.
To those who got scratches, what type of environment does your phone get exposed to? Keys and coins normally won't scratch hardened glass, but dirt with rocks and sand will.

it's official our screen is scratch proof

my phone is being replace by sprint on tuesday. With me knowing that I decided to put our screen through a test. Off came the screen protector, I scratched the screen with keys, coins and nails. I put it in my pocket. Placed it on dinner table face down and slid it across the table. To my surprise, the screen is brand new without a scratch or surface scratch. I've come to the conclusion, screen protectors are a waste of money.
I was thinking of doing a youtube video. But it's friday, and I have better things to do.
Well, it's very scratch resistant based on the stories here, however adding some sand to your tests and you'll probably be singing a different tune. Some jewelry can also scratch the screen.
There is a Korean-language demonstration of this on youtube. They tried it on the i9000. It's pretty impressive. I think you can find it if you search 'galaxy s scratch test' or something similar

I was trying to put it through the everyday use test. But hey you want sand, I'll give you sand.
i dont know how i did it, but mine is scratched. 2 very small thin scratches, but they are there. i rubbed it with a cloth thinking it was a smudge. no dice. its a scratch.

LOL, read around and you'll see what I mean about sand. (but please don't do it).
And besides, you cannot claim "scratch proof" until you've tested it in all conditions.
I've had two epics. The first one I left bare, and even though I babied it and never set it anywhere but on my pocket and it's rabbit fur charging bed, it still got a lil hair sized scratch in the middle of the screen.
I've put a screen protector on the second one.
I noticed the screen is very resistant to scratches myself. When I first got the phone I had a screen protector on it but then I took it off because it kinda ruins the brightness of the display.
Anyway, after having it off for about a month the screen has maybe 4 very small scratches and that's it. I've dropped it in the parking lot, floor and slid it across the table tons of times not to mention it being in my pocket with keys. I'm in the Army I've even had it with me at the range where we lay on the ground and get sandy dirt in our pockets and it still is doing really well. I'm impressed.
It is definitely NOT scratch proof!
It is very durable and scratch resistant though.
I've had it since launch day, I have a small, fine, but visible, scratch near the top left of my screen. It's as if there's a small, fine facial hair the screen I can't remove.
I don't know how it got there, I keep it out of the pocket that I put my keys/change in. I've never dropped it.
That said, I've been hesitant to get a protector because I like how smooth the screen is.

Exactly, resistant enough that I prefer no screen protection. I can live with hairline scratches if its the only thing is need to ware a screen protector for. I have I small hairline scratch and its so difficult to see, I have to have a bright light hit it just so and look really hard to find it because its so fine...

Yes, its fairly scratch resistant but not scratch proof..it boils down to applying pressure at the right angle..
I work with alot of abrasive materials. Sometimes I'll have sand and diamond dust on my fingers when using my phone. My phone is scratched to hell from this. But nothing to deep to maker me warrant using a screen protector. The scratches are only visanle with the screen off

After getting my Zagg on 100% perfect (second try) I still like the added security (even though I do hate screen protectors as much as you guys). If you don't think it will scratch, use sand, it will. Sand/dust/etc will be in your pocket or on your hand someday.

okej thanks m8 do u have nay scratch?
This has been thoroughly discussed in the accessories section.
I have the Zagg Invisible Shield and i like it. You can't notice it on the screen exept if there is sun like a lot of sunlight on it, but you do feel like a bit of a plastic everytime you tuch the screen, i mean it is not that smooth to the feel, but the phone registers your touch every time with no problem.
I use one I got from bestskinsever.com (I think), its great. Takes a little getting used to the texture as you're obviously not touching bare glass anymore but it definitely does the job well, no discolouring or marks on my phone since using it
Why use a Display Shield when you have a Gorilla Glass onboard?
To be, or not to be: that is the question!
you don't need a screen shield
the glass is harder than the shields
i tried to scratch it with keys and it just can't be scratched
a firend of mine did it. and why not be on the safe side if you can?
havent used a screen protector since i bought the phone about 8 months ago
i havent got any visible scratch on the screen. not even under the sun
maybe when i use a microscope, then yes, but mmm.. im not going to
Had mine bare for 8 months as well and the screen still looks perfect, and trust me I'd notice any significant blemishes. Just the other day I wiped it clean and looked under bright light and could only see a couple of near-microscopic scratches.
A shield would ruin the feel IMO. I just keep out in its own pocket and hold it tight.

I prefer having one than not too... I had one so far and know that i removed i see i'd rather have one on for extra protection. After all Gorilla glass can be scratched too (although it's not easy to scratch it). I'm on the "better safe than sorry" side but for others who are very careful with the phone i would just suggest a case!
It is not neccesary for scratches but it may help to protect the screen from shattering when you drop it..

the force that is needed to scratch this glass would also scratch it past one of the screen shields
screen shields are useless for this phone, they just make it look uglier... and in some cases like zaag they also add a rubbery feel which ruins the smooth experience
I've had mine in my pocket with a hand full of screws an no scratch on the display

only if you drop a Hello Kitty cookie jar lid on it from 6" up in air. Friend did it and shattered the glass somehow. Hence forth he has a Hello Kitty skull/crossbones on his car window

to be honest it's unnecessary but for me it's annoying to wipe my screen everytime it gets dirty, and with a screen protector it doesn't smudge as easily
I took off my screen protector and now have a scratch. Its only visible if you switch off display and see the screen under a bright light. The back cover really needs some protection cause its a scratch magnet.
Gorilla Glass is resistant to everyday scratches, like from dust particles and carrying it in your pocket and things like that. No screen is resistant to high force impact.
I've had my Galaxy for over a month now and the display glass is still pristine (and I use it in differrent environments)! I had a Desire which was durable to some extent as well, but I managed to scratch its screen somehow. This phone? No problem whatsoever.
The plastic casing, however... the back cover has visible "signs" of usage
Strangely enough I have had some mixed experiences with gorilla glass.. My own galaxy GT-i9000 went 2 weeks and the screen was fine.. then i decided my fingers had grubbed it up a little too much.. took my cleaning cloth for my glasses and went to work only to find i had basically put hairline scratches over the whole screen.. Not terrible mind you but noticeable under bright lights or on low screen brightness..
On the other end of the scale I convinced a friend to get the galaxy s also.. Walking down a dirt road, he tripped while holding the phone and it slip maybe 5 meters down the dirt.. not a single scratch.. the plastic was a bit tarnished though from bouncing around.

Is it necessary to have a screen protector? Pros & cons?

Is it really beneficial? What are the pros and cons? Does it affect how clear the screen is? Does it affect touch sensitivity?

I use an anti glare type for several reasons, 1) Keep it from being scratched, 2) To reduce sun glare, yes it does reduce the screen brightness the trade-off its worth it imho. 3) Finger prints smudges are annoying as hell and I cant keep cleaning the screen. 4) Finger glide yes fingers tends to stick to the glass but with an anti-glare protector they just glide. My 2 cents
Thanks, Blackwidowman!
Fingerprints are such a pain, with the screen protector; fingerprints don't stick?
I always use a screen protector my smartphones and tablets. I just get a clear one, and I don't notice it once it's on. To me, they are too much money to risk scratches.
Personal preference really, for some the added protection is well a worth the change in look and feel. For others like myself there's just no way we'll sacrifice the clarity of the display for any amount of protection.
Since my First android phone (HTC Desire) i dont use one and have No scratches.
Sent from my GT-P7500 using xda premium
Never used one on any phone or tablet. I just look after my devices. I mean what would you be doing to scratch it? Using a shard of metal instead of a finger. Phones I can understand, putting it in the same pocket as keys or coins or somthing. I just never put anything in my pocket with my phone. But a tablet, not exactly pocket size. If I take it out with me, it is in a bag (on it's own) or in my hand. I have had it a few months and not a single mark on it. As for fingerprints, much easier to wipe of glass than plastic. Some decent screen wipes make easy work of them. Or a few breaths on the screen and a glasses cloth.
Basically, take care of your tablet and you won't need any kind of protection
I dont think I'll ever need it for my tablet. No scratches without a case or protector. About fingerprints, I never see those.

Well this may not be a issue on the screen protector on the tab. The one i had for my charge did nothing but hold in all the oils from my hands causing the screen to have a constant foggy film over it. Just something to keep in mind.

LOL! Me too. I a stressed out just thinking about mine arriving. Ugh, I may ask a friend who is good at this to do it for me.
I've had my Galaxy Vibrant for a year and half and my Galaxy 10.1 tab since July and I've never used a protective screen. They both get heavy use and I carry them with me all over the place and nary a scratch. There is a reason why they use gorilla glass.
I personally hate screen protectors. I haven't used one in I believe 6 years.
Given that it's kept in the Samsung Book Case, the only time I anticipate my Tab will ever come near anything that'll scratch it, is if it hits the floor, at which point it'll basically be a written off screen - and fingerprints? Well I have glasses anyway, so a spray or 2 of glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth once a week or so and everythings perfect.
I've also generally got quite dry hands, so with a screen protector on I can't 'swipe' across the screen because the plastic gives much more resistance than the glass of the screen.
Similar thing with my smartphone, nothing shares a pocket with it and so far I haven't had a single scratched screen...in fact the most damage I've done to any phone in the last 3 or so years is that I've lost the H and C from the back....
Some sort of screen protection is a must for me. I just find ways to scratch and break stuff.
I suck at applying the cling type protectors so with my DX and Rezound I have Otterbox Defenders and with the GTabs (I've had two...sold one and missed it) I have Gumdrop cases. Both these companies have a clear membrane for the screen which works well for me.
Although I object to screen protectors because they mess up the beauty of the display, I decided to get one due to the fact that I hate the finger prints i leave on the screen. I went to the mall and installed ghost armor on it and so far I like it, a lot, surprisingly. The display is still as beautiful, no finger prints and it actually feels nice.
it is supper hard to put one one it takes allot of time and paitnce i used my tab for a few months and i was fine without a saver i jest got one for fun but it is like heck to put on and i have a few bubbles in it lol
I love the skin-like feel of Zagg protectors. I now put them on all of my devices. No fingerprints, tactile feedback, and accident protection.
I put their leather skin on the back of my galaxy tab and the orange peel protector on the front. Feels elegant and solid.

Tell me your experiences with none on, is your screen getting scratches?
I hate screen protectors as well. That said, everytime I've tried to go nekkid, I've eventually ended up with scratches. No matter how careful you are, it seems, Gorilla Glass WILL scratch. Relatively easily IMO.
I picked up an InvisibleShield HD from Best Buy and it is super clear and flush. I dont even notice it on there.

I will prob go with no screen protector, I had my HTC Hero for 3 years and had very minimal scratching without a screen protector. I only ever put my phone in my pocket on its own. I also keep my phones for the 3 year term that I get them on so by time the 3 years is up the re-sale value doesn't really matter to me any way so if it has some minor scratches it doesn't matter much since I will prob just pass the phone to someone for free anyway. Not to mention it looks and feels better without the protector and why not have the best experience with your phone instead of babying it.
I've never had one on my E4GT and it only has a few super faint scratches that you have to turn it off and put in sunlight to see. I don't think I'll put one on my GSIII either - they always end up getting bubbles or peeling back at some point.

Wet.
I'm going nude too
The only phone I've ever had a tiny scratch in was with my Droid Bionic. But it was my work phone which means that I didn't baby it the way I normally do with my phones. None of my phones have ever had any scratch on them, and in fact the only phone that did have a screen protector on it, broke. Not that a screen protector is supposed to prevent it from breaking after someone stepped on it but yeah that's another story. I'm also planning on getting a white one and don't think it would look too nice after a while as the glue around the edges gets dark.
I figure as long as my pockets are free from anything else and they stay clean that I shouldn't have any issues with the screen. Just take care of your stuff people. Also while i'm at it, I think it's disgusting when people here scratch their screen then return it for another one. That's not anyone's fault but your own. There is already a high demand for these devices and the carrier or samsung should not be held responsible for that.
*gets off my soap box*
Screen protectors are a pain in the ass. Get rid of it. You can always tell that it's on there. Just take care of your phone. I keep my right pocket for the phone only. I never put anything in my right pocket except for the phone.
I never use a screen protector. Never got scratches on my phone either. This is gorilla glass 2, so if you mess this up you don't need a phone

Stick your finger in the sand at the beach, then swipe your finger across your screen. Report back.
Sand will scratch the screen. Sand is actually at locations other than the beach and may come into contact with your phone/finger.
One year on the nexus and not a single scratch. My daughters epic is 2 years old without a single scratch and she just throws it in her book bag. Neither have ever had screen protectors.

I think most people would notice if sand came in contact with their phone/finger and wouldn't have an issue scratching the phone.
I've never used a screen protector, nor do I have any intention of using one on this device. My s2 looks like the day I got it.

Meh. Some sand/dirt is overseen depending on its size as not all dirt/sand is the same size. You can google gorilla glass and scratches and see it will scratch. I'm not saying everybody will scratch their screen, but I'm not taking any chances. Besides, I'm a pro at putting on screen protectors so I do it anyways..
If you are worried about scratches, I'd rather get a flip cover or slide in pouch than taint the display with a screen protector. Granted I live in the midwest and there isn't exactly a lot of beaches around, but I had my Epic since launch and never put anything on it and the screen still looks like new (the bezel not so much). It's even been dropped a few times landing facedown on my driveway/garage floor.
I have been naked on my phones the past several years and no visible or major scratches. If you are careful and don't put coins or keys in same pocket you should be good.
I'm going without a screen protector. One reason is that I suck at putting them on and get really annoyed with the bubbles and dust particles underneath. But the screen is just too good to cover up with a protector. I take good care of my phones so I don't have to worry too much about scratches. I had my GS2 for 8 months with no protector and no scratches at all. I put it in my pocket without anything else and it was fine. I make sure my hands are clean before using my phone.
I always start out with a protector, then end up taking it off after 6 months or so and that's with every Smartphone I've ever owned 2007-present.
