Less than 3 months ago I had an iPhone 3g, than a HD2, now because of ALL the considerable, never ending problems with my HD2, I had to switch to the touch slide.
So the real question is, is this phone really "mid range"? I like to think not, because I haven't received it yet, but there are allot of mixed reviews on the internet. At this point I am wiling to sacrifice some screen real estate for overall performance. The qwerty keyboard REALLY excites me since the on screen keyboards are never wide enough for even my little fingers, swype is nice since it was the only option I had with the HD2 but to send an email fast it was not ideal.
How does this phone really compare to the EVO, DROID X, and the never ending android phones already here or coming....
The reason the phone is considered mid-ranged is it doesn't have a 1ghz processor like some of the other higher end phones. This phone is very snappy despite the slower processor and as soon as a new kernel is released we should be able to overclock the processor to get closer and closer to the 1ghz mark.
I received an EVO at Google IO, so I used it for about a month. Yes, the EVO is a little snappier, but in reality, it depends on how you plan on using the phone. I use connectbot daily on mine to ssh into servers, and a physical keyboard is a lifesaver. I also found the EVO almost too big and felt likely to slip out of my hand than the Slide. I'll also mention that I get 6-8 hours more out of the battery on the Slide. 4G on the EVO was nice, but it was really annoying when you had it on listening to Pandora in the car, or were in a iffy 4G area - you would loose your connection for about a minute when switching between 4G and 3G. (Maybe one of the recent updates has fixed that, I don't know.) I'm looking forward to getting the T-Mobile HSPA that will make the 3G connection faster and I actually think that the Slide has the advantage when you are in a HSPA covered area since you'll get up to 7 mb/s on 3G. Yes, the EVO is a faster and flashier device, but I find the slide to be a more useful overall device for me and (other than having the large beautiful screen on the EVO) I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by having the Slide vs. the EVO.
After having it and using it full time for about a month I don't really consider it a mid-range device. However, I'm not one of the users that delves into every nook and cranny of the phone to pull out every ounce of usability.
I use it for work mainly and use Remote Desktop Client from Xtralogic to access work PCs and servers. It absolutely flies and the keyboard is a must have when doing that.
I upgraded from a G1 and the difference in speed even when the memory gets to the low end due to me not restarting it in a week it is still twice as fast as my old phone.
I came from using an iPhone 3G that I loved but really got tired of only having EDGE so I got the HTC HD and after a week of using it I hated it. So now I have this slide and I think its a great device. It runs smooth, looks good, and I put it up there with the iphone I had.

i dont think its a mid range phone, this is my phone list in the past six months: Moto Cliq, Iphone3gs, HD2, BB Bold 9700, not Slide. My girl loves her CLIQ cuz she a social flower, me i can care less, definitely a mid range phone. I moved to the Iphone but hated ATT service and spotty 3g. HD2 was a high end phone (b.c of the processor but thats all) Windows really choked the phone. BB was cool but i hated the internet. The slide marries all these devices together for me. I have the social part for the most part, its nice and clean and sexy like the Iphone, screen is the close to the HD2. Fully and spacious keyboard, and Android 2.1. The phone has all the same features and the high-end droid phones. Just without the (over-hyped) 1gz processor and the front facing cam. The phone is snappy and handles the os and tons of app without hesitation.

Agree 100%...
Get my Mytouch 3g tomorrow in the mail! I went from HD2 to this Im really excited. It seems like an awesome phone from what I have been reading,I cant wait.
It is enjoy
I've had mine for a couple weeks and it still flies haven't even rooted yet just waiting for a froyo rom. I mean I have all 7 screens full and still don't get lag so it doesn't seem mid range to me.

I agree with everything dayoungmogul23 posted. I think (and of course this my guess/opinion) that what's REALLY helping this from being bogged down is the 512 Ram and the N1 GPU. Takes a bit of pressure off the Arm 11. I really can't wait to see what FroYo is going to do to this thing.
Of Topic: On a Side note I just felt sick to my Stomach when Jobs announced the Front facing Camera like it was a New Idea he came up with. Really? Hmm this Video Calling feature on my circa 2004 Phone is fake? Coulda fooled me. This was a feature on Dumbphones in other Countries for about 10 YEARS!

i'm in the market to upgrade my phone and i'm torn between the two. if you had to pick between the 2, which would you chose?
it really depends on what features you want. hardware keyboard or not? do you care about the phone specs? um stuff like that. i personally like having a physical keyboard so i say the mytouch slide. read some reviews and try to get some hands on the products. they can both do the same things, since its all android, up to you what extra features and such you want.
I have been weighing this same question. Frankly, I have a laptop, a netbook, and a desktop that all have 2ghz+ processors. If i need a 1ghz or better processor, i'll probably need to boot one one them up to do the task. Higher specs such as the 1ghz processor etc = less batt life. As I have read here people are seeing 5+ more hours of Standby/Talk time out of the MT3g Slide then the nexus. Battery life is everything to me. I want a phone that will last 10+ hours on light to medium usage. I want a phone that isn't sold on bells and whistles, but on what a phone actually needs. Battery life, Stability, durability, etc..
TL;DR - MT3g Slide looks more value dollar for dollar then the Nexus. If you have 528 to spend on a phone that kinda wants to be a tablet PC or a netbook. Just buy one of those and call it good.
3 words
keyboard, fastest gpu
2.2
Wait until Froyo comes out for the slide then ask that question from what I hear its coming pretty soon and for all mytouches not just slide.
Im glad other people agree with me about this being better than the n1, also it should be taken into account that if this phone is anything like the other htc android phones its underclocked the original clock speed of the n1 is only 768 mhz so rooting should do alot for this phone
I personally like the slide a LITTLE bit better just for personal preferences. I used the N1 and loved it! It saved me from my WM past and I have not looked back. I finally got used to not having a keyboard once I installed swype on my N1 (without it is very frustrating for me). But it still sucked to type a long email or something. I now use the MTslide and I like and use regularly some of the added features:
Physical Keyboard (although I use touchscreen a lot since swype works so well)
My Modes (is awesome for me, not for everyone)
Genius Button (about 1/2 of my texts are voice so it makes this very simple)
I have not noticed any difference in performance. when I kill my apps I still have 225MB available or so with several apps installed. the N1 with froyo had a little more but there has been no difference in performance.
With Froyo coming soon and possible root soon I would go with the MTslide over the N1 at this time.
Nexus One, hands down. Granted I have not run a full diagnostic with numbers and stats and whatever, but I have used both for an entire week day under very similar conditions and here is what I found...
Software
Nexus One: I am a developer and love to mess with my phone. So far, this isn't possible with the MyTouch Slide and the second it is, I will remove the ridiculous ROM they have on it because its pure crap! Hello confetti theme. Something are T-Mobile Sense blue, others HTC Sense green and the rest is covered by your "theme". Its all over the place.
Hardware
Tied: Hardware keyboard is nice, touchpad and camera button are nice on the Slide but overall build quality feels cheap, though I will say the slide out mechanism feels like it will last years. For the Nexus I really like bigger screen/higher resolution, soft buttons and slim profile. For storage, Slide at 8gb
Performance
Tied: Even though specs show the two to be very different, both feel snappy but you can feel the Nexus' speed in games and multimedia applications. Reception is same, call quality goes to Slide and battery life goes to Nexus. Nexus wins camera for responsiveness and ease of switching between still and video
Overall feel
Nexus One: I have grown accustom to its slight tacky grip where as the slide feels like a wet bar of soap at times. Haven't dropped either yet, but I imagine the slide is the first to go down.
I went for the white Slide since it looked slick in the pictures/videos online, but in person it looks cheap.
And in closing I just have to say I like a stock Android build. If the Slide ever get its, it would probably tie it up. For the price at $479 vs. the nexus at $529(?) I'd go Nexus
I just noticed khtims' sig
Nexus One (I love android now)

With Android being so much better than WM I think any android device would have turned my head. I am very impressed though with both the N1 and the MTslide. It is a hard choice for me.
I came from having 2 hd2's (I thought the bug with mms sending and crashing was just the phone I had, nope - sense) and I prior to that I had my g1. Having said that, I would hands down choose my slow, tiny g1 over the hd2. It felt great albeit super thin (I like thin but it felt almost too much so) The OS itself had so many bugs I can't even compare it to the android's os on my g1 and I think I only had cupcake on it. Having a keyboard will be a plus and I think the processor is at a 600 mhz speed which is marginally better than the g1 but still on an android device ='s win.
I am using a Touch Pro 2 on ATT but I want to switch to Sprint for one of the smart phones. I am trying to decide between Epic and Evo.
I've seen and played with both phones and both seem pretty equal to me. On first glance the Epic feels way lighter and cheaper than the Evo, and I didn't like the keyboard nearly as much as my TP2.
How is the Samsung software? I've never used a Sammy smart phone and I was wondering how their software compares? I've used HTC for the last 4 phones I've owned. With full root can you put HTC software on the epic phone?
Anything else I should be away of in making my decision to switch?
Thanks
You'd probably get better answers about TouchWiz in another forum, but I can say that I'm not a fan from what I've seen. It would drive me nuts not being able to change the four shortcuts on my homescreen.
The HTC Evo is CyanogenMod supported which, in my opinion, is a very strong selling point.
The HTC Evo also has Froyo. The Galaxy S phones have yet to be updated. I'm pretty sure they'll be seeing an update soon, but you never can tell.
You'll probably never see a full Sense UI ROM on the Epic.
The main thing that I like about the Epic is the Hummingbird processor. I haven't really had an opportunity to play with a Galaxy S phone w/o a T-Mobile sales person breathing down my neck, so I can't really speak to how much better it makes the overall experience.
My opinion would be that if you think you can live without a hardware keyboard, to go with the EVO.
Sorry if that was a bit rambly... I just woke up.

Advantage Epic 4G
1. QWERTY
2. More powerful CPU and GPU crushes Evo's GPU, no comparison
3. Screen is about 5x nicer than Evo's. To be honest, Evo has a really ****ty TFT LCD screen displaying only 65k colors.
Advantage Evo 4G
1. Feels more like a premium device, very heavy for a phone, nice form factor
2. Roughly the same size as Epic, thinner, but way less bezel, more screen.
I keep hearing about all the pixels you can see on the epic. I like my Evo, I'd say if you want to game or need a hardware keyboard go epic otherwise the Evo is great. Most games are payable with the Evo just with a few slowdowns. Battery life is just slightly better on the epic, like 15 mins or something like that.

i work for sprint, I dont think you can go wrong with either. heres what i think...
Epic
Pros: 4G, GORGEOUS screen, Hummingbird processor really flies when scrolling and rendering, Great KB, and DLNA (instead of HDMI)
Cons: Somewhat bulky even though very lightweight, even though screen is gorgeous, colors are over exaggerated, resulting in some pixelation. 5M/VGA cameras versus the Evo 8M/1.3M combo. Capacitive buttons at bottom VERY touchy and buggy
Evo
Pros: 4G, 4.3 inch screen, HUUUUUGE development community, Android Froyo 2.2 out the box, 8M/1.3M camera combo, KICKSTAND!!, 2 flashes on Camera, HTC Sense blows Touchwiz out of the water (even though I prefer LauncherPro), and lastly Evo comes with Youtube with HQ capabilities
Cons: HTC has capped the framerate of the Evo out of the box because of the HDMI controller. Compared to the Epics constant 60fps, it blows a stock Evo out the water when it comes to anything graphical. Scrolling, pinching and zooming, things like that. The 1GHz Snapdragon core is fast as hell when launching programs and multi tasking and performing operations, but it stinks compared to the Epic when it comes to 3D gaming. Now, with that being said, there are plenty of custom roms and kernels that lift the cap on the framerate on the Evo, letting it achieve about 55fps. Close to 60, but not yet.
Screen on Evo is a tad bigger, but looks sort of washed out against the Epic.
HTC Sense is great for the average user, but its Heavy, slow, and hogs up alot of resources.
Dont get me wrong, the are more pros and cons to both, but to ME, those are the big ones. Which one do I recommend?
I RECOMMEND GOING TO A STORE AND PLAYING WITH BOTH TO SEE WITH ONE YOU..ill say it again....YOU...like better
For me, I already own the Evo, and its an awesome device, the Epic isnt enough of an upgrade for me to ditch the Evo. Furthermore, Sprint employees cant buy the Evo or Epic yet anyways. I only got an Evo cuz I was our stores advocate.
I think if I were in a buyers position tho, and was an average user, or even a more than average user, I would definately pick sadly...the Epic.
Now, if your into hacking and overclocking and tinkering your phone, then the Evo is definately the phone for you. There is so much support for the Evo, its truly unbelievable.
At the end, I LOVE my Evo, hands down the best phone ive ever had. You may not think the same, and coming to an Evo forum is gonna get you some very biased answers on which one is better. Go to a store and try them out for yourself. They are both incredible devices
I don't care at all about games but I am really tired of the slowdowns I've come to expect with Windows Mobile.
For instance, sometimes waiting for a text message to appear or for the home screen to load (5-10 seconds) is "normal" for me. I want a snappy device, with a good end-user experience. Like the iphone.
And I wanna customize it, unlike an iphone.
Edit: Thanks for the recommendation, I'll go in today and play with them again....
This post says it all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770471
id say go with the touch pro 2 again. haha just kidding, i hated owning the touch pro 2, so slow!!
I had a Touch Pro 2 for a month, it was so slow I couldn't even answer calls on it. Literally it would take 30 seconds to press the "answer call" button and by the the call would be disconnected. Also that conference call feature where you could easily add people to a call simply did not exist (i think it only works on the GSM verison)
I actually really, really like the Palm Pixi after seeing it in person. That thing is tiny [that's what she said] and quite underrated.
I kind of want to ditch my Evo for the Palm Pixi but would mainly miss the Google Maps Navigation. [edit I suppose it probably has Sprint Navigation]
I played with a friends epic, and I was not impressed.
touchwiz looks like kindergarten compared to sense.
it was lightweight and nice display, albeit smaller than evo.

I agree with your review here I have 5 Evo's at work and own one myself and yesterday just activated 2 Epic's great phones screen is out of this world. That being said depends on if you want a mechanical keyboard or not. I could go either way bottom line is you can't lose with either phone they are both great. I can say for me the Evo is the best smart phone I have ever owned.
As others have said, the best way to choose is to play with both of them yourself. That being said, a friend of mine got the Epic the other day and I went over to show her how to use it and I like the EVO more. It may just be the fact that I'm more used to my phone or just simply personal preference, I don't know. The Epic is a nice phone, but IMHO, the EVO is better. Everyone is different though and you may feel another way. I'm just happy that after being with Sprint as long as I have (about 10yrs) and dealing with the fact that year after year all the top phones have gone to different carriers, Sprint finally decided to offer 2 very good choices.
I work at a Sprint store and a customer with an Epic came in with an image burned into the screen. I don't know how and I havn't read anything else on it but if I know Samsung then there will be at least one major issue.
The main reason to not get an Epic is the other name attached to it - Samsung. They are, historically, horrible with their smartphones. Slow to release updates, slow or never release updates to fix bugs big and small, marginal support for devices out on the market, and just a complete lack of customer service. As a former owner of an Instinct and a Moment, I cannot recommend buying anything with the Samsung name attached to it except their TVs and computer monitors.
I can, without any doubt in my mind, say that the Evo is the best phone I've ever owned thus far. By itself with no root and no modifications, it is a wonderful phone. Rooting it and putting whatever I want on it to expand its potential only made it a better phone. The guys over at SDX will have a heck of a time ripping out TouchWiz (yuck!) and making the Epic better than it is (it's already rooted, supposedly). I won't even be thinking about a phone upgrade again until at least November to see what's on the market or what's coming to the market (especially from HTC).

* 1Ghz Snapdragon MSM8255
* Android 2.2
* 5MP Camera
* Front Facing Camera
* 3.8” display
* 8GB microSD
* Comes in 4 different colors: Black, White, Plum and Red
It's good but I mean the N1 has all that besides maybe the front camera and a 3.7" display instead of 3.8" display. But like he said...it's all preference
Don't forget the newest Snapdragon and GPU and the 768MB memory and 4GB of ROM.
I love my N1, but this is pretty solid. Though I'm clinging on to my N1 until the Gingerbread update to see what it's all about. Then, as soon as the source code is released, I'll sell the N1 at an all time high on eBay to the desperate souls wanting a taste of Gingerbread.
Then hopefully use the money to help buy a MT4G outright and wait a few weeks for CM's Gingerbread since the source would have been released.
This is all contingent on the assumption that the MT4g doesn't have the rooting issues that is plaguing the G2, DHD, etc..
Edit: Also don't forget about the very fast HSPA+ (the reason we're even calling it the -4G)
Kind of ironic that the codename is glacier even though it's such a fast phone in almost every right lol
Unless you want a front-facing camera (and who really absolutely needs that?...), there's absolutely zero reason to switch.
Same performance; almost the exact same screen-size...
But then you get a crappy OS layer
Not as open
No custom ROMs yet
Slower OS updates
Hassle of switching
The ONLY reason I'd switch is to get a 4.3" screen or 3.7-4.2" screen with a higher resolution (a la the retina display), and of course faster processor/GPU.
It bothers me that every carrier in the US has a 4.0 or 4.3" (native-)Android phone except for T-Mobile. (HD2 is not native Android.)
Not worth it...do yourself a favor and keep the N1 for now (till the new year when a lot of new devices hit the market).
Thanks for all of your input...i really didt want to switch unless the phone blew my N1 out of the water...and im also on att and were i live tmobile kinda sux...thanks again...

Really? I like my N1 but wouldn't mind having a better processor, better touch sensor, more responsive screen, better antenna, more RAM and a front facing camera.
I don't think people are doing their research, I love my N1 but I had this bad boy since January. The myTouch 4g is not the same with just a ffc and a 3.8" screen, It's BETTER!
I don't know I had my nexus since launch haven't seen anything yet to come close

I think my next phone will be 4inch, new internals and google experience. Second cam would be fun, but I could live without.

I'd wait. There's bound to be a more powerful Android phone released for the holidays. Maybe a stock 1.5GHz device. Try to wait until Dec. That's what I'm doing even though I'm ready to throw this G1 in front of a moving car.
I am thinking I will get the MT4G. My N1 has terrible reception at work while my coworkers with tmo have better signals. My screen locks up and I have to remove the battery at least once a day. I am out of space on my phone. I don't have many apps but I am out of space.
The phone will be rooted before long and there will be a custom ROM so I am not too worried about the custom interface.
I'm growing so bored of my N1. I want to want every new phone that comes out, but there's always ONE thing about a device that comes out that is just retarded and breaks the deal. Evo 4G; no GSM, SGS phones; bad GPS and no stock, G2; No permanent root or custom ROMS, same with the Desire HD and apparently this phone. It's getting pretty depressing.
I even wanted to go w the new WP7 phones, but the OS is useless to me with no voice or multitasking or C&P. Even though I think it looks great and has potential I'll have to wait til V2.0.
I really want a WebOS experience, but there is nothing compelling about the current hardware.
Long story short, this year is bull****. If you got a smartphone in 2010, just keep it because every phone is basically the same or you'd be giving one thing up for another. I suggest waiting til the new year after CES with better phones with better screens, gpu's and OS's and hardware. No compromises.
I've been thinking about this too. Really there is nothing about the phone making it much better than my N1. Wifi calling would be nice since my signal at home sucks but otherwise there isn't much more it offers over my N1.
Sure it has more internal memory but I've been using a2ext since my G1 so no issues with running out of memory or apps. Cell reception on my G1 was MUCH better and as annoying at it is when my N1 can't hold a signal nearly as well it's not a reason to jump ship to a comparable phone hardware wise and no guarantee of better signal strength.
I have the MIUI ROM which is quite simply blazing fast, no other ROM has even come close to speed.
Once a phone with a larger and better screen with more internal space and a much better processor comes out I will dump my N1.

It IS a better processor than our Nexus Ones! Why does everyone assume that just because it's clocked the same, it's the same processor? This is a second generation Snapdragon on a 45nm architecture with an Adreno 205 GPU. The processor SMOKES ours.
That being said, I'm holding out till January... I want to see what, if anything, happens with the rumored new developer phone.

It seems to me that you have to pay extra to tether and use your phone as a wifi hotspot. With the n1, you can do it for free for now I am staying with my n1.

1. Vibrant will have full flash once 2.2 hits.
2. Hspa+ is a backwards compatible service, so the vibrant will still benefit from it (up to the hardware limit which is like 7 mbps)
3. You can mod a ffc onto the vibrant if you really want it...but there really aren't too many practical uses for it right now anyway.
The vibrant is by far still a better device imo.

Reporter: What about flash support?
Steve Jobs: Our phones love flash, that where we store things.
I do think Vibrant is a better choice, even though the Snapdragon 2nd Gen processor in HTC phones (G2 and MyTouch 4G) is a beast on its own, but if it weren't for somewhat childish looks of MTG4 and the fact that you cannot mod the damn thing (only temp root, and no RW access to NAND) makes it a bit of a downer.
Dragoth12 said:

Will you have to get the official update to get flash? I'm running Eugene's froyo and my phone won't receive any updates at all for other reasons so if i can't get flash that would suck.

my mistake i should have said led flash.
and yea once the banding issues are fixed i am buying a Ffc lol
From a majority consumer point of view, the MyTough3g is better.
FFC isn't a niche device, it's pretty mainstream considering you can now chat with people who use Yahoo Messenger from your Android phone if it has a FFC. Don't really care about Qik, but Yahoo is very much in use in the world. I suspect Windows Live Messenger will debut this feature quite soon with some Windows Phones coming out with FFCs.
The phone is snappier. Doesn't have the crappy RFS file system. The GUI looks good, and the Speech recognition works great. Doesn't feel like a paper plate in you hands, either (though I've added a cover to my vibrant to put some weight on it).
The Vibrant is a good device but the software (and I've heard FroYo doesn't really change much, outside of the fact that it's FroYo and yes I do need some of the features in FroYo so I welcome it) is terrible and some of the ommisions are just mind-boggling. No LED on front for notifications, for example. No Flash. GPS that still doesn't work correctly for half the people who have it. Slow as hell file system that makes the phone unusable from time to time. Less Application RAM than an HTC Aria. The GPU really doesn't matter because Android 2.1/2.2 still doesn't have a gfx accellerated GUI and Windows Mobile 6.5 has more games than Android (more games that you're bother installing, that is).
HTC also typically has an HTC Sync application for their phones, which makes managing them much easier than Galaxy S in the US (no Kies for us).
TBQH, I'm tired defending this phone. I wonder when others will get tired of it (prolly never on this forum, people still call the HD2 the greatest phone on earth here). This device is being completely overshadowered by other offerings and the only reason why it sold so well on AT&T/T-Mobile/Sprint is because:
1. T-Mobile didn't have anything else worth buying in the range of high end smartphones (HD2 not an option for most people with it's OS and problematic reputation)
2. AT&T Doesn't have much other high end smartphonts other than Palm Pres and the Torch that just came out with the Captivate (the Pre and Torch feel more mid-range compared to iOS/Android devices, and there was the Aria as well in that space).
3. Sprint had so many issues with Evo backorders/issues that customers had no issue but to get something else. They have no other good phones. Their Pres are 1st gen and no one wants a Touch Pro 2 or Hero, Lol...
How that there are other good phones coming out... I wouldn't expect much.
Not everyone is a power user. My mom doesn't cry about not being able to jailbreak her Blackberry and when she had a WinMo phone she didn't even install an app on it. She just used it as a phone/txt device (basically as a feature phone). The temp-root issue is only an issue for a very small minority of users - so it isn't even an issue at all in the grand scheme of things.
I looked at the new mytouch.
No thanks.
And I'm at a loss as to the above posters issues. This is my third android phone, and it us by far the fastest happiest android device I've used. My last phone, the Nexus one, although sexy, would need a reboot at least once a day to keep it snappy.
And I live the size if included internal memory is the Vibrant. No need for special hacks to get files on SD.
The Vibrant, for me, is a fantastic phone.
And yes, can't wait for the banding issue to be resolved for the FFC.
Oh, and it doesn't need a flash. It takes better pictures in low light conditions without one, than other phones that have a flash
Well, the one thing that is unmatched on the Galaxy S line is the amazing screen. Sorry, but I can't go back to LCD or plain AMOLED after this. After all, you use the screen more than any other feature on a smartphone.
As for the other things, it all depends on what's important to you. GPS works great for me now. FFC would be nice, but not necessary for me. As for flash? Meh, LED flash is barely adequate as a solution.
Personally, I picked the Vibrant because aside from the core smartphone functions, I wanted a phone that could also replace my old iPod. So for me, having 16gb of built-in memory was more important than even having a camera, much less a flash.

My First Impression Of The MyTouch 4G:
The screen on the MyTouch 4G is much higher in resolution. You can barely see pixels. The MyTouch 4G produces real whites, the SuperAmoled produces green/blue whites. However the SAMOLED has a much better contrast ratio, meaning colors pop since blacks are much darker.
The 3.8 inch screen is too small for me
The Build Quality of the 4G seems to be good.
The GPU seemed slower than the Vibrants PowerVR.
The CPU is faster on the 4G.
Now here is the odd part. I must admit I've noticed the same thing with the G2.
Both the G2 and the Mytouch 4G are HSPA+, while the Vibrant is not. However, side by side, running speedtest app. The vibrant EVERY SINGLE TIME had both higher download and upload speeds. It just doesn't make sense. Side by side, the Vibrant got almost 6mbps download. MyTouch 4G best it could do was 3mbps. Same with the G2, I don't get it.

Every phone has its fanbois. I just left T-Mo and played with an HD7.
Vinrant fells like an 8088 PC-XT compared to that. Only way to think this phone is snappy is to have only used worse phones.

Me and my roomate both had our Vibrants in the store. We were astonished by the difference, just in scrolling form home screen to home screen. The Vibrants were obviously laggy doing something trivial. The Windows phone just blew through everything. The UI is beyond polished. The minimalist look definitely works well.
Microsoft definitely took the best route short of developing their own phones: Lock down the hardware and focus on doing what you do best - software ~ namely the OS and all the device drivers. Google should take note, or Android will suffer (although I'm sure it will be prevalent in the low-mid range device market, since Nokia isn't that big a player - at least in the US).
We played with the MyTouch 4G. The phone itself is ugly and I'm not a fan of screens < 4". It has some Sense elements in it which = update churn like 90% of other Android phones. The G2 performed decently but it has a whole host of problems. If you haven't experienced that ****ty hinge I implore you to go to a T-Mobile store and play with it. The minute the phone is perpendicular to the floor the phone starts closing (more like slamming) on you. That makes the phone unusable for me if I'm lying in bed and using it (as I often do before I go to bed). I guess something like an Epic 4G or Droid 2 wouldn't have that issue, though. That hinge was a terrible idea, Lol.
Oh, and did I mention the touchscreen keyboard on WP7 is /drools/ worthy.
I can't see myself getting any other Android Phone again.
If you get a phone with a UI on it that looks decent it is bound to come with hoards of issues and update churn. If you get a stock phone the built quality is pure crap and/or half the space is taken up to lock the phone down instead.
In any case, I heard FroYo for Galaxy S in the U.S. is supposed to be coming Nov. 11 on Facebook from "Samsung Galaxy S."
I heard Galaxy S performance is still below acceptable with FroYo, though... Some people are reporting regressions.
i just picked up the new mt4g. i have two phone lines (one for my work) and will probably keep both phones. i will need to use the mt4g for a couple of weeks go form a complete review/opinion on the phone v. the vibrant.
the mt4g is very solid and very snappy considering all the bloatware. with its HTC Espresso UI, the interface isn't for every body. Just like HTC sense it does a huge amount of social integration, moreso than the vibrant. And just like HTC sense you have pre-set "themes" you can load in terms of personal and business preferences.
it's screen is super crisp but no where near as "vibrant" as our vibrant phones. in terms of gaming, i haven't compared the two yet as i'm sure the mt4g can handle them well to a certain extent vs. the vibrant being that it's a second gen snapdragon. but i'm sure in terms of rendering and graphic display, it won't match the vibrant. i'll probably compare the gaming and video playback between the two later this week.

There's been no announcement or even real rumor of the sort, unfortunately.
The only thing that's confirmed is "by the end of the year".
If the mytouch had at least a 4" screen I would get it. That being said, I'm looking forward to the android version of the Dell Venue Pro

i agree, the epic was good for a time, but, samsung stinks at giving out updates, htc sense looks WAY better than touchwiz. all in all,evo shift rocks!!!!!!!!!
my 2 cents...

My first android phone was the HTC Droid Eris, which I loved. Prior to the HTC Droid Eris I had a HTC Pocket PC with Window mobile 5.0. I loved the HTC phone but hated the operating system. I actually down graded to non-smart phones (two LG) and found they were better then the windows mobile os. Anyway, after the HTC Droid Eris I switched to Sprint and my only option for a real keyboard was the Samsung Moment. Lets just say I dumped my Samsung Moment before I was due for an upgrade and ran straight back to HTC. I love my HTC Evo Shift.
In my experience, Samsung does a poor job of paying attention to the small details that shouldn't be forgotten. The Samsung Moment's touch screen sensitivity was total crap. I found my self having to almost pound on the Samsung Moment's Screen. When I switched to the HTC Evo Shift the touch screen sensitivity was great. The Samsung Moment forgot the haptic feedback with the touch sensitive menu, home, and back buttons at the bottum of the phone. Really?! Now I can't really compare the two phones completely since the htc evo shift is definitely better regarding hardware, but I can tell you that my first experience with Samsung phones is that they are not very good with their designs. To be honest I was so completely turned off to Samsung phones that I didn't even give Samsung's newer Android devices a chance. I was told by a Sprint repair rep that generally HTC and LG make better phones then Samsung.
Don't let the 800mhz rating on the processor fool you. This phone is fast. In fact, per pdadb-dot-net, the processor in the HTC Evo Shift has an clock frequency range of 800mhz to 1,000mhz. According to Phil Nickinson writing for androidcentral, "Power under the hood
And the Shift has quite a bit of muscle, with Qualcomm's single-core MSM7630 processor running at 800MHz. It's worth repeating at this point that you shouldn't read too much into the Shift's processor running at 800MHz instead of the 1GHz chip we see in other HTC phones, including the original EVO 4G. It's a different architecture. Think of water rushing through a pipe. The pipe's larger on the Shift, so you can push more water (data) without having to push it as fast. It's more efficient. Add to that the 512MB of RAM and 2GB of ROM on which to store applications, and you won't be worried about whether you've got enough muscle to get the job done. In daily use, it's fast, fast, fast."
My personal opinion, skip Samsung and go with HTC. No phone is perfect, but I have found that HTC does a good job of producing good hardware for any smartphone os, in general. I also have found that HTC support generally stands by their product and I have had positive experiences with HTC support when I had my HTC Pocket PC.
The 2GB of ROM is a lie.
^ Shift Faced
Like it!
I'm quite pleased with my Shift!
Pro's:
-Nice hardware keyboard
-GREAT battery life
-Pretty sturdy
-Screen size (800x480 resolution, which is the same as the EVO, packed into a smaller screen--pixel density isn't quite iPhone-like, but it looks great to me!)
-CPU
Con's:
-A bit on the chunky side (size/form factor is about the same as the original Droid/Droid 2)
-Display isn't QUITE as nice as others (SAMOLED...)
-HTC Sense (Don't take my word for it though; some people love the Sense UI, but I think a custom ROM without it feels way snappier and more fun to use)
My advice? It really depends on your preferences. If a hardware keyboard is a must-have for you, then get this phone! I think you'll be very happy with it, and I doubt there's any other keyboard-equipped android phones headed Sprint's way any time soon. If you don't quite need a hardware keyboard, then I say WAIT. The EVO 3D is scheduled to land in the summer. A 4.3" screen is just too big to hang with, you say? I've also heard (somewhat reliable) rumors floating around about another HTC with a 4" screen (basically a Sprint version of the Incredible S landing around the same time). So in just a short while, you will have options galore!
I love mine except for the inadequate battery it comes with.
My thoughts on the phone...
I love the phone.....before it I had the Samsung Epic.....it was nice for a short while until you use it enough to find all the little problems with it.....i did not like the Epic's keyboard.....on the other hand I love my shift.....HTC Sense is ok......but if you don't like it there is CM7......I love the Shift's keyboard and HTC has great customer service....Samsung does not keep up on the phones that are already put out.....if there is a problem they just put out a new phone (Samsung Moment-Intercept-Transform) and leave the people that have the older phones behind with all sorts of problems......HTC is the best android phone maker for sprint I have found...hope this helps

Ikr....my shift last all day with just sending text messages....the only problem i have with the battery is if i loose sprint service and it searches or if i need to use it i put it on roaming.......then the battery time goes down but if im on sprint service and not running every app on my phone the battery lasts a long time...
I'd say if I had to do it all again and buy a new phone, I'd get two EVO Shifts . One for daily and one for testing new roms. Best phone I've ever had hands down . On a 1 to 10, it's a 13

With my old-school phone 1500 mAh was enough. With a smartphone, and using it as a smartphone 1500 mAh is totally inadequate. I had to buy a Mugen 3600 mAh to correct this. Now my usage between charges is great.
I am coming from a Samsung Moment that I couldn't stand anymore. The Shift is amazing. My fiance also got a Shift before me after I told her it seems HTC makes the best phones on Sprint. Everything just works. Unlike that POS Samsung phone where it still doesn't work right.
I am coming from a G2. I wanted to know would I be missing out on anything? Sure vanilla android (blah blah) I don't want to miss out on a MAJOR factor just by switching

My friend has the G2 and I don't think you'll be missing out on anything. The Shift is a great device imo. The keyboard may be a little better on the G2 but its still really solid... If you want stock Android there's plenty of good ROMs out there.

I'm happy with mine.
Battery life is excellent. I can generally make it 2 days on a charge (7am Monday to 10pm Tuesday). The keyboard is quite usable. The size is not too big, but not too small.
Had an epic for a couple weeks. Never used the FFC. Felt cheap and light and plasticy. Battery lasted one day, maybe. Screen was gorgeous though.
