can anyone else see horizontal lines on their screens? - EVO 4G General

I can easily see horizontal lines on the gray part of the notification bar as well as other gray things. my screen is an 0003 novatec. I don't recall seeing this on my 0002 novatec.

I can see like, individual cells(not pixels), if I look closely on anything, you are not suppose to keep your face close to and LCD screen, they have a minimal viewing distance.

it's pretty easy to see even from far away.

I need some more opinions before I decide whether or not to exchange it again.

I don't see horizontal lines but I do see vertical ones, the yellow bars on white/light colored screens others have mentioned.
I have a novatec/003

same, except rev 002

no horizontal but i do see vertical even stripes.
if i use a flashlight or have the screen white, and i look hard enough, relaxing my eyes, holding it at a certain angle, i can see perfect vertical lines of separation. The lines are a very faint beige.
its like those 3d posters from the 90's.. If you concentrate and relax your eyes, you'll seen em. theyre perfect 5mm of separation it looks like.
doesnt bother me because my screen is rarely full white, and when it is, it doesnt cross my mind
002, nova

bah. I want to exchange it, but I'm afraid they'll start to not like me for exchanging so much while they could be selling them.

I'm not trying to be Capt Obvious but have you put a screen guard on? I had one on before that showed lines on the screen that were annoying....

You're afraid they'll start to not like you.... hmmmm... well, if you really want them to like you, then I guess you shouldn't make them do their job, which includes exchanging defective equipment... rather, just plop down some $$ and pay full price for a new one when available.

Are you holding the phone like 2 inches away from your face or from how a normal person would be looking at the screen?

I'm holding it two inches away from my face, but I don't recall seeing this on my first novatec. no screen protector either, unless this is part of the damagecontrol rom, which I doubt.

lolwut?
also, I can see it on the battery icon even holding it 4 inches away. what do you guys think? should I go exchange it? also, I bought my phone on June 5th. If I go into the store on July 5th to exchange it, does that count as within 30 days? (I counted on the calendar, July 5th is the 30th day after my purchase)

well I can't exchange it anymore, and I didn't, =P. also, I went to the apple store and checked out the iphone 4's and noticed they all have this faint gray line issue as well. maybe my eyes just have good focus. although, I have no idea why I didn't notice it before.

Lol, if you mean the lines in all the theme headers, that is the graphics they use. It's in stock, I can see the gradient lines on notification bar etc. I was looking at them up close in graphics editor while making a theme

I can also easily see the vertical off-white lines on my screen. They're very perfect & evenly spaced, I just find it strange.
I haven't heard anyone report them on Epson screens, but my 003 Nova they're pretty clear. Gotta swap my phone soon anyway (light leak, bad 4g, and bad battery cover) so I kinda hope I get an epson screen since the purpley blacks also bother me.

I can see it everywhere though, and it's very clear that it's part of the screen because when I scroll, the lines don't move. I can see on all websites, as long as it is not black. I can also see it on the battery icon and the bars showing signal strength.

2 days ago there was a horizontal line in the center of my screen and it had all types of colors. I rebooted my phone and it went away but hopefully that doesn't come back.

Problem with my SuperAmoled Plus Screen!

When i received the phone today (around 3pm uk time) after an hour playing around with it i noticed 3 dark thick lines on the bottom half of the screen (on a gray background) i thought nothing of it at first and continued to use the phone.
Only just now i thought there must be a problem so i displayed a full white image and you could really notice those 3 thick dark lines. I then changed the screen brightness to max, min then back to auto and it was gone... BUT! when the screen dims a bit just before turning off i can see those 3 thick lines again just for those few seconds before the screen turns off.. it doesnt really effect me but it annoys me that they are there.. plus there might be problems with it in the future. I'm gonna go to my local Carphone Warehouse tomorrow and see if they can replace it.
I just want to know if any one else has had this screen problem.
Thanks.
Do the lines correspond to anything that is on the screen often like the keyboard or some sort of widget you have on your home screen?
These SAMOLED screens suffer from image retention and possibly burn-in. I've noticed it on my original galaxy as well as the Nexus S. As long as the lines go away after a few seconds it should be nothing to worry about. If you notice them there always then that could be a problem... usually the easiest way to see them is on a flat gray background.

oh boy, its too soon to be having any burn in. might be another issue.
my nexus one has burn in of the status bar at the top. and i can see a burn in of my entire keyboard on a white image. after more than a year of using the phone, oh well. but the status bar burn in was there within the first month.

the lines are:
1: just above where the 4 icons are at the bottom of the screen
2: where the page numbers are (dots)
3: just below the other 4 icons (widgets)
Thing is that these lines are solid and have no breaks in them.. so i dont think its the 3 points i gave above this.
I know it's too early for burn-in but some screens (might I say... all?) come from the factory with some sort of flaw. None of them are perfect and most have flaws so imperceptible that most people wouldn't notice. Every nexus S and Galaxy I've seen had some sort of area or line or multiple lines on the screen which were a bit different color, not as bright, or something along those lines. Some are worse than others, and I noticed the flaws right after taking it out of the box brand new. (I've been through about 6 Nexus S's between me and a few friends).
It's not really the same as a traditional LCD/LED screen since there's not a big backlight. Each pixel is individually lit and some may have specifications that are just on the edge of within manufacturer limits. There's almost 400,000 pixels on the screen... the chances of all of them being created identically is slim to none.
If it bothers you I say just take it back and get an exchange, showing them the problem area on the screen. Just hope your new one will be "less flawed" =)

well i dont have a good quality camera. You might of seen it before i changed the brightness settings but now that i have its kind of faint and you can only see it when the screen dims..
Gonna go to carphone warehouse now be back later
well before i went i called up all the carphone warehouses near me and none of them have stock.
I was told i only have two options:
1: go to a carphone warehouse and exchange.
2: go to a carphone warehouse and get a refund then order it online again.
So i should get a new one by tomorrow.. or atlest on friday.
no poroblems like that with mine. Screen is freaking perfect. On a side note i liked doing this test because I love staring at the screen.
Drooooool
well.. i went to a carphone warehouse.. and they had two instock. I exchanged it.. screen is fine but.. now after i got home i can see a mark/ dig inbetween the screen and the bezel (where the gap is)
again it doesnt really effect me but god.. now that i know its there.. i notice it so much that.. i might exchange it again Y_Y
This happens to me every single time i buy a new phone >.<... trust my luck!

well well well.
Went to lakeside since the one near me closed at 7pm.
Changed the phone again and this one had the lines on the screen and a dig in the silver bezel. She gave me another phone and the screen was perfect and there are no digs on the silver bezel...
In 2 days iv had my hands on 4 different S2's lol..
Last phone i had i also had 4 of them cause of XXX problems.. thought i was gonna beat it today and have 5 XD
Geebuz wept! I'm getting mine in from the UK tomorrow. I hope for hell sake it doesn't have imperfections. The ship back to the UK would be a disaster and if that one has a dig in the bezel upon return I'd blow a valve!
FINGERS CROSSED MINE IS PERFECT
as far as i know. this is the grid pattern on the super amoled screens. however. because of the poor QA/QC of the screens, some of those grid patterns are more visible than other area of the screen.
the whole super amoled is about lines on a grid pattern. if you notice more deeply, you will see that you also have those " lines " some where else on the screen yet they are not visible as the one you noticed.
i had to go through 4 galaxy S1 to get a good one where the pattern isnt "visible " through the whole screen.
its a defective unit. mainly poor Qa/QC. if you can live with it, it wont do you any harms. or get bigger. if you cant, then change it.
or and make sure you dont have a dud phone with piss poor yellow white on high brightness or pink gray on low brightness. because thats also a defect in super amoled screens.

Weird screen issue, confirmed on two so far.

I don't know if these if happening on all our s2's.
basically, I noticed brightness goes down when displaying a lot of whites. e.g. google vs the whites in a page with more darker areas. (i don't think it's my eyes.)
I've never noticed this on my hd2, or any other phones.
when displaying google's in the browser, the white is not impressive at all.
another test i did was with an image I created (attached), half black half white. open in gallery and slide it so more black shows, or more white shows. The whole screen changes brightness!
My friend's S2 does the same.
can anyone confirm?

Its not.
Its definitely there irrespective of display settings.
Basically even when you are not moving picture, have a look near the border.
There is definite grey banding near the border. It kinda looks like white is bleeding into the black.
And its there on every SGS2, every single one. It can be hardware or software issue.
@OP. you are definitely not alone. I was actually having talk with my friends in UK. 6 of us now have SGS2. 2 are from O2, 3 from P4U and 1 from Handtec and mine is from Clove.
All are experiencing same thing. Its definitely not your eyes.
@others. Its not a glaring issue. You wont notice i t unless there is extreme contrast images on screen like this one. My dad still couldnt notice it when I was showing it to him. But its still there. Will upload video, but its hard to pick on video as well.
It's an option in the Display settings - auto adjust screen brightness after analysing image or something similar.
Samsung thing, I think, since my Omnia 7 with Windows Phone did exactly the same thing. It's trying to save you power and completely normal.

Thanks very much guys, I think I can accept it if it's all built like that. With that option off it really helped! (I feel a lil retarded now). But for some reason that test image I made still has that dimming effect (double tap it in the gallery, this instant change makes it obvious), but maybe that's normal, not fussed. (normal web browsing is perfect)
And no I didn't exchange any phones. Mine does have a dead pixel tho. Can anyone check their screens for dead pixels for me? I know someone had blue lines and stuff on their units, that's a bit drastic. I'm just wondering how many actually have say 1 dead pixel, so I have a better picture before I actually exchange mine or something.

Nah, no dead pixels or other screen issues here. If you have dead pixel, i would return it.
Here is the video, its not clear as camera limitations dont really show it properly, but at 720P you can see it for fraction of second, that is not the lens glare but screen turning grey right above the white border.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGr7xJ1JIjU
around 0:15-0-18 in that video.
As mentioned, its a power saving feature as AMOLED screens don't like whites as they drain power, they prefer blacks. So reducing the brightness helps to save battery.

I can see it grey in the video, almost like that gingerbread scroll limit effect. very hard to see in the video though, would have just said it was the camera.
Yea I'm considering returning. In my other post, I mentioned how Handtec got back to me. In short, not fault since only 1 pixel, but told me I can exchange/return within 7 days. But, they said since it's not a fault, I'll have to pay shipping both ways. (£28 per way, ouch)
Does that sound right??
Just a thought, could not the grey area when moving a black/white border area simply be the screen pixels taking a few milliseconds to go from completely dim, to grey, then to completely white, ie just a response time, albeit a bit slower than what I would have guessed?
On my SGS, going into a completely black app drawer with bright icons and moving around, it also has a very slight dragging effect on some white/black constrasting areas?

Sh***y Display & 5 exchanges...

Hi to all,
I would like to share my brief experience with Galaxy S2. After changing 4 phones when I saw defects on the screen of the 5th one I fed up and returned it for good.
The manufacturing quality of these displays are absolutely garbage on these phones. I own SGS and the screen is perfect. I expected the same thing with SGS2 especially if I pay 700 for a phone. when I came home and compared 2 phones I was disappointed.
Here is my experience with 5 phones. I live in Toronto so these phones purchased locally. First three of them from Best Buy, last 2 from Bell.
1.) Colors were fine but there was a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. A black dot. I exchanged the phone.
2.) In store I checked the phone for defects and couldn't find one (because of bright environment). I went to movie right after the purchase and realized in 2 min something was wrong with colors. When you dim the light, there was no grey. It was purple. keyboard was purple, gmail was purple. I exchanged it.
3.) Colors were so so. Still had a visible pink tint on it. and when you tilt the phone and view from different angles colors were changing, having a blue tint. If you view with 90 degrees it was pinkish again. (there is no such problem on my SGS)
addition to this, when in a dark room if you open a pure black picture the screen was showing some defects (dark black lines and spots on screen).
When you pull down the status bar, in low brightness there were some bands.
I returned the phone, got my refund and wanted to buy form somewhere else to see maybe its a batch problem.
4.) I went to another place. Got my phone. Screen had no defects but it was like someone pissed on it. It had a yellow tint. whole screen. colors were so pale. I actually kinda missed the pink tint. which was better and giving more vivid colors. I exchanged it the same day.
5.) It had a pink tint( which is ok since I got used to it). It had no banding when you pull down status bar and displays pure black very good.
BUTTTTT!!!! when you pull down status bar there was a half centimeter diameter white spot. And once you see it u never not see it. It was there in every pic (mostly grey colors)
I had enough and returned it. I wish I could find a good one like my SGS(which I didn't have such problems)
I tried 5!!!!! phones and none of them had a perfect display. Such a shame for a 700 dollar phone. I decided to wait and see if its gonna change in several months or not.
Maybe they shipped all the dodgy ones to Canada. I have a UK model (bought just over 2 months ago) and my screen is fine - no dead pixels, no purple or yellow tint...

Maybe they rushed the manufacturing for Canada. who knows. But one thing is obvious there are literally 2 different screens. I had been many stores. Many. And Checked maybe 30 display phones and from different stores and there are either Yellow tint screen or Pink tint screen.
Even if half of all the SGS2's have defective screens, the probability of you getting five in a row is 3%.
Yeah, maybe Toronto is receiving all the defective, returned ones. Or maybe you're just really unlucky. Or cursed.
Wow, that's a string of badluck. I've had mine for a couple of months now and have had no screen problems.

Yeah its probably because of my girlfriend. She never wanted me to get this phone since I am already in 3 year contract with bell owning SGS and had to purchase the phone with full price.
Also many first time buyers might not see those things. I have SGS at home and can compare. My sgs has a blue tint too but at least when you view from different angles colors don't change at all and not a single imperfection. And blue tint makes the whites brighter and less irritating than having a yellow white.

You should have kept number 4. Yellow tint was a software issue and KG2/KG3 fixes it.
I only had to exchange once due to 2 dead/stuck pixels on the bottom left. Haven't seen any of the other issues you mentioned.
Sorry about that my friend, Hope you get a good one soon.
My screen is fine, but i noticed something as you said. When seeing a full black color while using any screen test app. I see many lines like drawing if looked closely :

Exactly. However when I open the same test pattern in SGS and put side by side, my sgs is smooth ad butter. Nothing on it. Just pure color, no imperfections whatsoever.
I have a question to you. When you dim the light do your status bar and other button colors band whites (such as keyboard, swype keyboard) has a purplish tint? Is it normal or a defect?
When I opened keyboards those buttons appear purplish. In my sgs they are grey.
I'm in Vancouver and got mine a few days ago shipped from Bell. No problems here with screen colors or dead pixles. My son also dropped it on tile already and not a single scratch, thank god. Still waiting for my case from ebay.

Nothing else except that, and bro my phone is always having 0% brightness hehe.
and to be more precise those drawings on full black color looks like burns on old CRT tv when suddenly power cuts isn't it ? haha
Anyways, Colors are vivid and really better than my LED TV.
and no viewing angle problems.
Do i really need to worry about those drawing while on full black? though you see them only if you look closer or focus ur eyes for long
mine has a blue tint when viewing off angle
so is this not normal because my buddy's is the same

I dont know what is normal or not no one knows. But I am assuming if there is no color shifting when tiliting on my SGS this one shouldn't have it either.
I really wonder if people don't realize whether their screen is yellowish/purplish or their phones are just perfect.
As far as I see there is no natural color phone toronto by now. And belive me I am not exaggerating it. If you put those two phones side by side their color tint is completely different. What kinda manufacturing is this?
I can even say which stores in toronto have what colors.
If u wanna see purplish tint display phones:
-Future shop in dundas
-Bestbuy in dufferin mall
-Source in dufferin mall
-Bell in Eaton center (lower floor store)
Yellow tint display phones:
-Bell Eaton center second floor they had like 5-6 displays which were all yellow)
-virgin mobile in dufferin mall.
I don't even remember some stores. this doesn't mean if u buy from there u are gonna get the same color phone. Its totally random. These are the colors of display phones.
i dont understand man, i have mine for 2 months now in UK, screen is fine it is the best screen i have ever seen.

Yeah, gotta love the deadpan humor. Some members here are quite good at it.
I had a dead pixel when I ordered mine when it was released in UK about 2-3months ago. The dead pixel went away within 2 days of owning. Maybe your 1st device was your best 1 with a little more patience.
Theres no excuse to you having 5 devices with problems. I really think there might be quality control problems with the screen manufactors. But I do know this is probably a very small percentage since it doesnt seem widespread.
Wow man messed up. I bought mine from China and it's the best. Absolutely perfect no defects at all! Perfect just Perfect!
well I just got off the phone with Samsung and they told me that what I'm seeing is a defect
I don't know if I should exchange it for another one or just return it and stick with the Atrix

Thanks a lot! Do you have a screen protector applied on top of that? I see something that looks like mura lines. I'm sure those are not mura lines but the way the camera was focused on the screen. Also that display brightness was set to the lowest, right?
It would be great to see more users contribute to this thread. I'm making a tally to convince myself to buy a White note. My black note was serviced several times due to screen issues, and am getting a refund. Not letting go of the note just yet.

Here you go. Hopefully the file attaches (I think it may be too large).
Oh, it looks like it may have downsized it. Let me know if you need more detail.

don't know if my eyes are playing me, I do see a couple of horizontal lines, I don't know if that is due to the screen protector or the angle the picture was taken from, don't wanna scare you, but I am hoping that the next wave of batches have a better production like the S2.

However, you can definitely appreciate the fact that the White Note has a better display than the Black. Horizontal lines or not, they definitely display less on the White compared to the Black. Hope to see more pictures soon!

No screen protector. And yes, I set the brightness all the way down before I took that photo.
I think if you're seeing a moire pattern it may be because of the difference in resolution between the reduced-resolution image and your monitor. I'm looking at the original photo in Photoshop and when I zoom in and out I see changing moire patterns at certain zoom levels, but don't notice anything when I look at it zoomed in at 100%, or even at 50%. And of course I don't see any moire pattern when looking at the phone itself.
Oh, and the brighter area in the lower left of the photo is my hand's reflection.
I do, however, see faint horizontal (vertical in this photo) banding on the screen when looking at the phone. I couldn't say whether it's any better or worse than the black/carbon blue version, as I've never seen one. I'd describe the banding as very faint, but visible if you're looking hard for it. And when looking at a blank white screen like this, I also have a general sense that not every part of the screen is quite the same level of brightness. Again, not major, but noticeable when looking at a solid white screen.
You'd need to reduce the brightness further with Screen Adjuster from the market. The basic brightness setting at 0% is probably only at 50% of what the screen is actually at. So you can go much dimmer to reveal the manufacturing process.
Learn to live with it. The marks don't affect the functionality of the screen. While I have noticeable marks on the bottom right half of the corner and vertical streaks, I don't let it deter me from enjoying this elegant piece of tech!

That is bollocks My new white 32 GB Note has a much worse display than my former two blue 16 GB. Think I gonna send it back so that the white has a better display is pure dreams
I just ordered my white note today. Looking forward to it arriving on my doorstep tomorrow!
guys make sure to turnoff AUTO ADJUST SCREEN POWER in display options.
i have black unit and i done lcd test on low brightness.no lines or anything.
if you have to download app to lower brightness even more to see defect.then something is wrong with u.because ur looking for reasons to find some kind of defect.everything is not perfect.if u cant see it on normal use, then its good piece.

[Q] pinkish/purplish hue at the top of the display?

I see a distinct pinkish/purplish hue at the top of the display. This is very visible on webpages with white background and black text (or in e-reader apps which black text on white background). The white balance at the bottom of the screen is very different than the white balance at the top of the screen.
I tried putting display in various different mode but the hue stays there consistently.
Does anyone else see this? If not, I may just have a defective piece and need to take it back.
Thanks,
Osho

I did see that - but thought that was only for the issue that when one scrolls up and down - there is a tint/hue. In my case, even on plain white background, I can see purplish/pinkish white at the top and the "real white" at the bottom.

IMO faulty device and not related to smear or red tint issues
Oshogg, that sounds like faulty hardware. I have the same thing, except my tint is at the bottom of the screen.
I'm returning it to my provide for a replacement next Tuesday, when they get new stock in.
One thing to check, is the metal rim in relation to the glass... Someone I know who has the same problem as me noticed a slight "lip" raised at the bottom of the phone (I have this as well). Do you have this at the top? He suggested that it might be that the glass was pushed in too far at the bottom / top during manufacturing.
Thanks everyone for the responses. I went to the AT&T store back today and to their credit, they did an exchange right away without any hassle. I compared the new and the old phone displays side-by-side : it was a day and night difference. So, there definitely seems to be very low quality control (at least on the displays) at Samsung manufacturing.
