I was wondering where is the rest of the memory but now I have an explanation: "this is how is designed" - LOL
very dissatisfied
Well... what an "answer"... they could've at least said "the ram is used for the GPU" or whatever... not "that's how it is designed"...
Not that I care, but still... not very helpful this video.
Bull****

Its interesting why they felt this explanation was so important that they created a video with a statement like this... Are they afraid of something?

They're trying to say that they wont update Galaxy S to 2.3
They should be, they are liable for a lawsuit. Its like if you bought a car with an advertised 200bhp, had it dyno'd at 120bhp and then they have the nerve to say its working as advertised

Ohhh.. many Thanks Samsung for this technical exhausting answer!! How i was so stupid!! now i feel like developer! LOL
sigh
i don't get why people do such big thing over this mem available thing.
will it make you feel better if sgs will show you total: 512, free 200~ ?
Wtf???? I just would like to know: the rest of smartphones are using the same trick or they really show 512mb?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
Someone happened to check the desire/desireHD for this aspect?... My wild guess that it's somewhat the same.
It's the same thing with your PC? The user addressable memory is quite a bit lower than what you put in ?
The thing is other phones also advertised as 512mb have 400mb+ useable ram
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Every android phone that i know has a reserved memory(for gpu i think). You can check this thread to see the reserved memory on other models:
/showpost.php?p=7179649
So? Different hardware, different memory mapping. The choose a design for whatever reason that they felt secure with. Very hard to second guess that without knowing what happened in development. Especially if you don't have a background in embedded hardware design. Furthermore there is a "fix" where some of the memory allocation is free'd up.
This really doesn't deserve a ****storm.

In case your board uses an onboard display adapter - yes. the onboard display adapter uses up to 128mb of your installed RAM, usually.

No it doesn't. The G2x only has 512MB of RAM versus the MT4G's 768.

Good question. I was surprised to read that myself. 512MB is like going back to early 2010 when the Nexus One came out. I would expect most new high end devices coming out today to have 768MB or 1GB.

Honestly, the myTouch 4G is plenty enough power for me. There is no app alive that can bog this phone down. **** ton of RAM and nice second gen cpu. Dual core is nice but not needed. I'll wait till my contract ends and there's probably gonna be like quad cores out by then lol.

I feel the exact same way. My contract just expired, but there aren't any phones out yet that I'd rather have. The other issue is not knowing what will happen with the network and phone compatibility. I probably won't get a new phone until the TMO/ATT merger is final.
I'll be sitting at Tmobile the second they open getting the G2X. It's too much of a beast not to.

512 mb of ram is large enough, it's just a phone not a real PC. there are no apps available or in development that will require you to have big amounts of ram.

I think I will have to get the G2x. From what everyone is saying, the stock 2.2 sounds like it is so smooth that it will make it easy to wait for Cyan development. I would also imagine that it would be that much easier for LG to release 2.3 OTA. Anybody know what LG's history is on OTA support?

I thought about pre-ordering on the 15th, but it probably won't get to me until the 20th anyway (since the 15th is a friday, sometimes T-Mobile surprises us before the release date), so I might just wait to go to the store in the morning.

The reason T-Mobile took the UI from Optimus 2x off the phone is so it will be easy to update to 2.3, since that's what it was suppose to originally ship with. Google will be the one releasing 2.3 OTA, not LG so don't worry.

Just because no single app uses that much, doesn't mean that a device's performance doesn't increase when more RAM is present. RAM is something you can never have too much of, and in today's world, 512MB for a smartphone is paltry.

Arc is outdated now, imagine 6 months from now? If you were going to do that I'd say just stick with your x10 until a phone worth upgrading to comes out. The arc is hardly an upgrade, and costs the same as the sgs2.

If these turn out to be real then I'd say with their new policies supporting developers and their bootloader opening and offering these two dual core devices I can't see any reason to not trust SE. Yes at first with x10 they were a pretty poor show but now 2 years on it seems they are back on track. I can't decide if not sd card space is good, would you need more than 32 gb? That really is a whole lot of storage! Only thing is can recovery menu work with no sd card to install files. This is definately a step in the right direction with their latest decisions and polices, good on you SE

Agreed. Like the front facing camera. Also want microSD card option. 32gb might seem a lot now but so did 128mb back in the days. 1080p or even 720p encoding takes a lot of space...then there's the media you put on (shows, movies, music, etc.). It adds up quickly.

All true, but i'm still waiting to see the power of the battery and it's internal storage. The only major things i like about this phone is that it's pure android and that it will release with ICS. If the battery is weak and the internal storage is low, i'm either get the SGSII or wait til something else comes out, cause i got a feeling the Galaxy Nexus is gonna be waaaaaay overpriced for pretty much the same specs as the SGSII, but with ICS(which is nice, but i can wait for the release on the atrix or SGSII) plus it's goin to Verizon first and i'm with At&T soooo........

as for the camera that is true, mp are marketing pretty much. software can make it look better than 99% of 8-12mp cameras out there. hahaha there is no sdcard slot? so many people didnt get the nexus s because of that. you'd think they would learn.. that is the same reason i didnt get the sensation because of low storage. i use my atrix as the same. most of it is music and games lol. which takes up a ton. how can a company make a entertainment device with low storage -_- unless it has like 64gb of storage i wont be happy with it. maybe 32 would be fine but still, im sure it will be expensive.

The biggest thing wrong with that video, "TWO HANDS!"

Finally what is it with Nexus phones and lack of ext SD cards lately?... *shrug*
