I am new to the forum, and I just bought a new G1 off craigslist tonight. ($150, new in box, with two protective cases). Why should I root and modify it? What are the benefits? What will I be able to do that I can't do right now? Links?
Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
EDIT: Oh, I should have said that I am not looking for another hobby or technological fun (I get plenty of that!). I just need to know what I have to gain before I dig in. Thanks.
If you have to ask that, just don't bother.
soo many XXXX on here.

My reply is perfectly valid.. If you don't even know why you want root, what's the point..? Just be happy with what you've got.
Do a search for "Root" and just read.
Tethering (use your 3g connection on your laptop)
Apps to SD (the g1 only has a few megabytes of memory for apps/games, so you can use a lot more)
Eclair(live wallpapers, more features)
Multitouch(if your used to the iphone/ipod touch)
Hero/Sense (to get a different android experience)
SPEED! (some roms like superd/fastTest/CSDI are fast as hell!)
Themes (so you can make your phone look any way you want (pink notification bars ftw))
Thats about it.

Really, if you aren't looking for something you need to put a lot of work into, rooting and modifying your device probably isn't for you. Unless you want to be left with outdated and obsolete features. There are a lot of things about rooting that you really should keep up with. And if you can't make the commitment to it, it's probably best to just skip this.
But like I said before, you can do it now, forget about everything else and just keep outdated and obsolete features.
THANKS! It is a beautiful thing when a person chooses to be helpful and kind. I appreciate it.
I guess apps to the SD and the increased speed are the only two things that I would be interested in.
If the phone memory fills up, will anything else I install automatically go the the 2gb sim card?
I do not have a data plan and plan on just connecting to home and work wi-fi networks when I need to access the Internet. Will moding the G1 help with anything wi-fi related?

Don't get too interested. Due to the G1's slow processor, most multi-touch will be more like.. a bad synonym that I can't think of. Upgrading to the Nexus last week from this device.. was worth it.

That's basically what I meant, but with more words.
Well, after a couple days of using the phone and downloading productivity apps and games that I think I will use on a regular basis, I only have 10MB of space left on the phone. So, it looks like I will be rooting/modding out of necessity.
Why root/mod the G1?

Wow, my post used to help someone else. Guess it was not a stupid question after all. LOL.
Personaly I like being able to run Eclair on my phone. I just like the look and feel of it. That and using setcpu helps battery life. Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't listen to that article, it's VERY outdated.
Also, another reason: (see my sig)

Well, it's over a year old, and something in the Android world is pretty much outdated after a few weeks
But here is some other reasons:
1) Not sure about this. Although, i'm pretty sure i remember using a multi-touch gallery a while ago.
2) I'm not sure why you'd want that anyway, it's pretty pointless. Also, that's only true for the home screen. There are apps on the marketplace that have 180° rotation. Cyanogen has also built in 180° rotation into his Nexus ROM so it could be possible on the G1.
3) I have no idea what the author means by this. Saving apps to your SDcard only means you can potentially install thousands of apps because they get saved to the SDcard instead of the phone. Also, i believe you can move the CACHE to the sdcard now too.
4) Downloading themes is very easy and incredibly simple to do now with Metamorph. It's pretty hard to 'soft-brick' your phone with this.
5) Not true at all. Everything is explained in very detailed tutorials. The only way you can mess up the Linux commands is if you can't read. Obviously, having a knowledge of Linux is very handy.
6) The firmware we have on our phones are MILES better than anything T-mobile releases, purely because devs get the OTA, mod it, and release something awesome, usually, the same day. Oh, you'd also lose root if you flashed one of these OTA's.
I'm not blaming the author of that thread at all, It's just things have improved ten fold since this time last year
Cyanogen has his 180 degree rotation in his newest Donut ROM (if you even really want it?)
If you use nandroid, there's never a reason to worry about a soft-brick. I nandroid every other day actually. Flashing something or not.
Finally, the person who got me into rooting was still running cyanogen 4.0.4 about a month ago and still loved it. you don't have to be "dedicated." of course, you'll be lacking some features you might find useful if you never update, but you'll still always be on top of a stock phone.
And, yes, meltus' famous louder volume hack. (If it wasn't for this I never would have been up for work with my mytouch alarm.)
Apps2sd - get a bigger sdcard. I have an 8gig class 6. payed 18 dollars for it on ebay (with free shipping) got it in 3 days. and yes, apps2sd might not free up your internal storage because of cache and all that.... but: it lets you install more apps. and: there are apps the clear your cache. you can even set it to clear periodically (mines clears every 24 hours.)
yes: I would suggest rooting, but I would also suggest that you read VERY closely and learn wtf to do before you ever even try.
I have been a user of Windows for long lomg time and have loved it when I had the liberty to flash clean cooked ROMS onto my device. Rarely, I stuck to Stock ROM's or over bloated ones no matter how stable!
Will we ever see the light of day when the streak will get to see some cooked ROM's which are not bloated with added apps?
I got my Streak bout a fortnight ago - so far tested and mostly fixed on downloaded apps - but really pissed as I still have crap on my streak which I do not use - why do we need to live with this?
Am now looking to dump the 2.1 - but sceptical as I nee many bricks flying around for units purchased online direct from Dell....
I really hope to see some cook - take the initiative and start cooking some clean workable ROM's
I am sure it will not be long before you have your wish, Paul over at Modaco is the main Cook at the moment nip over he has a custom ROM

I have no idea what you're talking about. What 'bloated' ROMs?
Why don't you just open the update.zip, remove all the crap you don't need, resign it, done. Or, just uninstall the apps you don't want? It's not exactly hard to do.
You also sound incredibly ungrateful, these devs put A LOT of hard work into these ROMs and you just complain about a few apps they've included? If you don't like it, why don't YOU start making ROMs. This thread is essentially just pure laziness on your part.
Wow. "why do we need to live with this?" It's not essential to life, It's a ROM. grow up.

Chill out Meltus.
Am not sitting here to start another debate on disrespecting Chef's - never had that intention anyway if you had read my post with a clear mind! - I have been a user of custom cooked ROM's since the days of XDA IIs and never had a reply of such.
My title read - 'Moved from windows' - which implied that I am new to Android and still experimenting - infact I am still on my stock ROM on my dell online purchased unit and was only lookign for a way to uninstall Touchdown etc to save on space in memory.
Thanks for the tip on changing update.zip - now I have a solution which I can look into!
I said we dont need to live with this and it was not pointed to any Chef - it was pointed to Dell - who have installed all crap on the unit (which I am trying to remove) and being in a forum - you will have to appreciate - we all have the right to ask questions - some may be good and some naive!
So mine was naive - and thanks for your answers.

Ah, I apologise, I thought you were referring to ROM developers, sorry
Anyway, if you want to open the zip, remove stuff, and then sign it again, you'll need the signing tool - http://androidforums.com/developer-101/8665-how-signing-roms.html
Sorry again, i guess i just completely mis-read your post ><

Haha, i think it's almost impossible to brick the streak at the moment, you can always just fastboot flash the stock recovery image then flash the stock update.pkg from Dell!
I'm a weak f***er so that's out of the question
I too have come from WM and have been using it since it came out in '98. One thing I miss is the ability to view and tweak the registry. Like on the HD2 just change
'Go to HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\ EncodeFormat' to '2147483647' and you have loads of additional video recording formats!
You can also remove ROM apps by using Root Explorer (need rooted phone obviously) and removing the offending /apk files from /system/apps and then clearing the Dalvik-cache and rebooting.
I just flashed the 2.1 ROM on my AT&T/US Streak and got rid of Touchdown and Amazon MP3. No more icons I don't use, nor widgets to scroll through.
here's a good guide to it:

Good luck.
Be careful about removing ROM apps, ive done this a few times and then i got endless process error....eeeek :S

Good to know. I was wondering if it was so easy, why would everyone care about what apps are installed if you can just zap em if you don't want them. Well thankfully I developed no ill effects from my deletions, and I removed those I really didn't want.
I'm not enough of a linux/Android gear head to know better. I'm a pretty good Windows gear head, but never knew Linux well which is too bad with all the cool Androids coming along in the handheld space. Oh well, learning new tricks is good too i suppose...
thanks
Is there a custom rom out there somewhere for the Motorola Flipside? I have the phone and I hate motorola blur, Is there something like AOSP. Something simple and fast?
I don't think anyone has cooked up a custom ROM for the Flipside. The phone's not really supported and known by most people. Everything is for higher end Android phones.
I have ADW EX on my Captivate over a ROM, and put it on my girlfriends Flipside. It's definitely a step up because of the animations, themes and options with the launcher. Honestly... Motoblur is hideous.
The Flipside runs pretty well if your root it and remove the AT&T stuff. I use LauncherPro as my home app.
Edit: don't add your social networks as Blur accounts. Use the Android FB widget and other apps to access that info.
+1 for ADW Launcher, between that and removing most of the motoblur / AT&T stuff with Titanium Backup the interface gets much better. I'm sad that I'm still stuck with the motoblur contacts/dialer, but at least I was able to use the modded messaging app from Cyanogen 5.

Try Dialer One. Very nice free dialer.
Thanks for the suggestion, that's almost exactly what I was looking for.
how are the devices working out with just all the att stuff removed
Being edited for accuracy...
I wanted to install a custom rom for my sisters flipside, cause she was impressed with the way my G1 looked.
It's not a terrible phone, so long as I can remove all the AT&T crap.
Ok everyone. beings that there is not a custom rom for the flipside yet. what say you about looking at some roms from the backflip and seeing if therre is a way to port them through to the flipside?
As the flipside i have in my hands is kinda a loner from my niece as i am trying to hook it up fpor her the best i can. there really is not alot of options out there for this.
As i run an xperia x10 this is just something to play with for me a few days a week if that.
but am willing to work on some roms if someone can point me in the right direction of what i might need to modify.

If you're really determined, you can visit Cyanogen's forum, and I'm sure people there will direct you.
The only really big downside to the Flipside is its screen resolution. Otherwise, it's a pretty up to date photo.
help please =D
Sooo i have a motorla flipside, its i decent phone i think. But as you all said i dont like the ATT interface and whatnot.. so how do i go about removing the ATT crap and replacing it with a new launcher or whatever? And what launcher should i use? I also want to be sure that i cant somehow ruin my phone lol
if you can help thank you!
ADWEX for the user interface
Titanium backup to freeze all ATT bloatware and make it disappear from the menu.
There are a few ppl working on custom Flipside ROMs...one PM'd me in a modmymobile forum and said he'd have at least a recovery done by yesterday...i'm guessing something set him back but something will be coming soon!
So I asked the guy doing work on the Flipside recovery and this is what he said:
The flipout recovery apk looks like it may work as is from the flipout forum, but may only backup/restore/ system folder using an older cwm recovery, so you have an existing backup option i think..
I'm trying to dice it up w more specific files, updated recovery w the ability to mount/unmount all the partitions for full backups and wipes of personal data from the recovery.. maybe a day or 2?

has there been a follow-up on what's being done? I've been seeing different things for example:
"How to Root, Uninstall Bloatware, and de-activate moto-blur for Motorola Flipside"
It seems pretty legit but the guy says that some programs end up not working, I don't really know how to directlink the site but thats the title exactly without the quotation marks, and i keep seeing things about clockworkmod being made for the flipside but its a ROM manager that doesn't seem to find "my device".
Anyway, thats what i've seen so far, and I know it takes a while to get a response but I feel that the flipside is a pretty nice phone, it would be great if I could do more with it, as i'm sure most of us feel that way

If you're talking about [http]androidforums[com]/flipside-all-things-root/345440-how-root-uninstall-bloatware-de-activate-moto-blur-motorola-flipside.html
then that site seems to be providing good information. i DEFINITELY would flash a recovery rom (such as polovinomozka's, his code seems to be pretty solid, although i have yet to test it. i do not have a flipside yet) and then perform a nandroid backup BEFORE doing any removal, just in case of irreparable damage i also would not recommend even trying to remove anything blur related as it will definitely make your phone unstable seeing how the whole system is based on blur. You can remove the ATT apps, but blur has to stay until there is a custom rom made without the blur built into it.
Hope this proves to be of some use to someone.
Last I've heard from one of the guys working on stuff is this:
yeah, i'm gonna see bout compiling from source the recovery apk that dexter derived his flipout recovery from and modify the hijack binary to work w the flipside (its only a couple small partition setting changes). if it works out, the cwm recovery should work flawlessly w /system /data /cache and /sd partitions, we're just locked down on the boot and recovery. (the ones we're using are fake or bootstrapped recoveries, not actually replacing the stock one)
If they're working a release of froyo for the Flipside, I'd be more then happy to make a donation for the cause. Love the phone, but I'm dieing for 2.2.
So check this out...I messaged the guy at modmymobile and asked how things were going becuase I heard people were having problems getting an updated CMW and this is his response:
"been sittin on the updated cwm recovery binaries and been draggin my feet/takin a break the past week or 2. i'll throw something out soon, but cant commit to a timeframe, sorry."
Looks like things are on the up and up...stay patient everyone

Depending on how in depth you want to read, try this thread, it has literally everything about different roms and mods for this phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866175
if you have any questions or need some help, hit me up on google talk (same username) (the faster option) or shoot me a PM.
I'd recommend Ice Glacier to get your feet wet -- it's the same sense interface as stock but with some crapware uninstalled like demo games, Amazon MP3, etc.
If you don't like it, then try another ROM -- you'll understand the process of flashing better at this point and may be more comfortable with a different non-sense UI.
Since you are rooted I'm assuming you have Clockwork Recovery (2.x) installed. If not, install that immediately via ROM manager! Once it is installed make a FULL NAND backup by booting up recovery and using the backup options -- then feel free to tinker and play .
Good root-required aps are AdFree (block advertisements) and ShootMe (take screenshots).
my advice on the other hand is to skip iced glacier and go straight to gorilla sense dhd. its the stock sense, updated of course to what you see on phones like desire hd, upcoming thunderbolt, etc. its fully functional. get yourself set cpu, read all about these. the procces is farely easy, just fallow the steps you get, and next time you will now by default how and what. go on sites like android central, talkandroid, phandroid...a lot of info there about top aps. of course, since you are here, I don't have to tell you about xda. read all u can about the phone, amd what it implies. at first don't go into stuff like set cpu etc, if you aren't confortable with it. give it time, and it will all come to you. whatever u see you would like to have, use youtube for how to videos and tutorials. whatever questions u have, no matter how nooby u think it is, go right ahead. this is the place u wanna be for that. it was for me, and look, the way I was helped, you will to. after you gain some experience about what it means to have full acces to your phone, it will seem much much easier...
so yea, have fun, cuz I do, every day when I find out something new that it can do...
I've had the MT4G since it came out in November and I used to absolutely love it but recently it has become increasingly sluggish and certain aspects have become much less responsive.
Pulling down the notification bar is much less responsive than before as is installing apps. Apps take much longer to install and when I reset the phone it now takes FOREVER (3 or more minutes sometimes) for the apps that are installed on the SD card to become usable. This wouldn't bother me quite as much if it weren't for the fact that it didn't used to be like this.
I do have a lot of apps on the phone (around 200) but I have plenty of free space on both internal memory and the SD card. When I go into the running apps section of the app manager it doesn't appear like there are any unwanted background apps running - just the essentials.
I'm not sure what I could have done to slow it down so much but is anyone else having this problem and is there a known solution?
Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened to my friends mytouch. What ROM are you running? I rooted her phone and installed CM7 and she's even more in love with the phone as to her it's 100x faster. So maybe you can go that route? Or you can install Faux's Orange Glacier if you want mySense, maybe ext4 will help you.
I am running everything stock. My phone is not rooted or running any custom roms. I haven't rooted because there honestly isn't much for me to personally gain from it. I like the MT4G interface and appreciate the things that it does well and ignore or workaround the things that it doesn't.
Also, I know Gingerbread has been confirmed so it's just a matter of time. So I guess I've just not done it because it's easier and I'd like to avoid doing it.
The thing is, when I got it and it was stock it ran like a dream. In fact it ran like a dream for quite some time. It's only been quite recently that it's begun to decline...

I dont like suggesting rooting/flashing to fix errors when its not needed, but in your case, it looks like it is. Because you say you like your rom, i would look at THIS one. Its the same as what you have now, but with root and you can get the version that has some of the bloatware removed. Hope I helped!

But why would this fix it? Something had to have happened to make it so sluggish. If you can't tell I really don't want to have to resort to rooting my device. Maybe I'm just not familiar enough with the functionality of a rooted phone: do all of the features work? (camera, gps, etc). Is it easy to update to a newer version of a custom ROM when a new one comes out? I don't really want to root because when an official Gingerbread update comes out I imagine it will be a nice and painless update whereas with rooting there is always that X factor that I could brick my phone and be worse off than I was before...

I got the hint originally that you dont want to root, but it really is the best option for you. All the features work, you can get those Gingerbread roms right now, if you would like. My favorite things about it are: WAY better performance, customization, choice of version of android, choice of Sense (or another UI overlay) or stock android, etc. I could go on forever with a list of whats better. If a new version of the ROM you are using is released: you download it to your SD card, (re)boot into recovery (something you will learn), three clicks of the trackpad and it will be flashing. Then you reboot and its all done!
If you would like, PM me and I'll walk you through all of it with links/guides/tips and opinions
EDIT: As far as the sluggish thing, i can guarantee you its something with the (currently stock) rom. I'm not saying its unfixable, but this is a good reason to go ahead and root, flash custom rom, etc.

Just to add on to what he's saying:
But I can understand why you're hesitant. I think the sluggishness is just part of the stock ROM, every person I know that has the stock ROM it eventually slows down after some time. But a custom ROM should be faster because it's just lighter over all, it's been deodexed (whatever that means) and all that stuff plus bloatware taken out. Plus it would be in EXT 4 format which has proven to be faster. There's wonderful youtube tuts if you need em, and of course you got us!
You're aren't they only one with the sluggish phone. My wife told me that her phone started getting sluggish about two days ago. She's also stock and not wanting to root. She only has about 50 apps installed. So like others have said it's part of the stock rom.
You could always factory reset it and start from scratch. That will bring back its original speed but you will obviously lose all your apps.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Having a faulty SD card or having a bad sector in the internal memory might also be a reason for it. In that case, formatting the "offender" will solve it (formatting internal memory means factory reset).
If I root my phone and install a custom ROM do I lose all my apps and/or other personal data? Also, which is the most highly recommended ROM for this phone? I'd like to use the most current and up-to-date one and preferably one where all the features work, etc...
I'm really unsure about this but I'm left with little other choice I suppose...

As others have said - if you truly don't want to root for whatever reason, your other option is to factory reset the phone, which will revert it to its original condition when you first got it. I for one totally support the rooting option, as it really does make you feel like you just upgraded your phone to a better model. Phone will be faster, more responsive, and offer better battery life (depending on the rom you flash). Plus, you just get a world of customizable possibilities that aren't available to you on stock. You can choose between Sense (and many different versions of Sense at that), stock/AOSP (i.e. cm7), or even something totally different like MIUI.
If you do decide to root, but enjoy the stock experience, I'd suggest Iced Glacier (correct me if I'm wrong) which is pretty much the stock UI with bloatware removed...or if you want to try a different version of Sense, I'm on Royal Panache right now, which is gingerbread Sense 2.1, and it's really awesome and works flawlessly.
You can use Titanium Backup to backup your apps/data and then restore them after you've either rooted and flashed a new rom, or factory reset...hopefully someone else will confirm this, because I'm not sure off-hand if you need to be rooted to be able to backup/restore.

I know titanium backup needs root before you're able to use it. He won't lose anything of he gains root. He'll be able to use it after root.

Thanks, wasn't sure if you had to be rooted to backup/restore - so to the OP, either way if you factory reset or root/flash a rom, you'll lose your apps. In that case, next best option is to make sure you sync google backup right before whatever you decide to do, so after you reset/root, your google market apps should automatically be restored to your device. Obviously, same goes with contacts, they will automatically restore to your device provided you have it synced with google.
If you decide to root, you won't have to worry about this again as after that you can use Titanium to backup/restore apps and data when you flash different roms. Pain in the butt, but better than the alternative of having a phone that doesn't run well.
I understand the hesitation with rooting, I was the same initially, but I promise you - if you don't mind putting in a little extra time and energy, the benefits are substantial. Obviously you're into your phone enough to register with XDA, so I encourage you to explore it. I'm not a hardcore tech-savvy guy, rooting is pretty painless as long as you read a bit before you do it.

No, you misunderstood what you quoted, you dont lose anything during the rooting process. You can sit with the stock ROM w/ root, JUST like how you had it before the rooting process without doing any extra steps.
@OP, The rom I linked you to on the first page was the stock ROM that you are running now, but debloated and few minor features added. You can do that, but now there are quite a few *stable* Gingerbread ROMs w/ Sense(2.0,2.1,3.0).

Oh yeah, duh...I was thinking if he rooted and flashed a new rom, forgot that he can still stay stock with root, and back up before flashing anything
Forgive me if anyone already suggested this, but have you tried rebooting? I didn't read all the text because I keep seeing people talking about ROMS and rooting. My myTouch does the same thing and restarting always fixes it.

Yeah, I reboot frequently - sometimes several times per day. As a last ditch effort before giving in to the root I got LauncherPro and have to say that it has solved like 75% of the problems I was having. SD programs still take their time loading on a reboot but homescreen switching is much faster as is app drawer scrolling (and scrolling in general really) and app launching is also quite a bit snappier.
The only caveat is that it really feels like now my battery is draining faster than it did before although the battery monitor doesn't show any abnormal amounts for any programs...
I was also taking a look at the memory usage and I was averaging around 168mb free which seems awfully low for a device with 768mb of RAM although there didn't seem to be that much stuff running either...

@OP, convinced that rooting is eternal happiness and stock is the devil yet?

Why, it's OK actually- Android (Linux-based) RAM management has a different behavior- compared to Windows. You can use Task Killers but whatever RAM you free will soon be occupied again.
