Wow, wiping cache through recovery fixed 2 big issues for me... - Nexus One General

Issue 1 - Ever since going from FRF50 to 72, I noticed that my soft keys weren't as responsive. My fingers had to roll over onto the actual screen to get them to register.
Issue 2 - Pinch-zooming in the gallery worked oddly. Once I set two fingers down without moving, the image would start shifting away from me. And when I spread my fingers, the image never zoomed into the area between my fingers.
I finally rooted and used amon_ra's recovery to wipe cache and dalvik cache, and both those issues are fixed! I don't know which cache wipe did it, but either way I'm glad it worked.

How to wipe cache with stock phone (no root, no updates)?
Is there any way to do it without third apps?

Yes, boot into recovery (turn off the device, then hold down the trackball while powering on the device)... then follow the instructions to navigate to the recovery window)... I believe when you get to recovery you get an android with an exclamation point.... press volume up, volume down, and power button all at the same time to access the submenus. Wipe should be in there. Works for non-rooted and locked phones. It's the same way I did my manual 2.2 update.

From stock recovery you can select wipe cache partition and see if that helps.

Just to be sure, all my data will still be there after the cache wipe, right? Coz it's only a cache wipe and not a phone wipe...
Sorry for my noob question, my phone is still stock and I m not familiar with the recovery yet, I will try when cm6 is out

This I'm not sure about.... I haven't wiped yet, though I'm about to. I'm not entirely sure what the system stores in the cache partition, so I'm nervous about doing it. I did backup my SMS messages (using SMS Backup & Restore) and my Apps (using AppMonster) just in case I decide to see how it works and it does remove my apps and sms messages. My contacts are all stored with google and on my macs address book so I'm not worried about that. And my photos and music are on the SD card so it won't lose those either.

im having problems with the keys too, and also with my gps...
im wondering, what kind of wipe you did to your N?

I just used amon ra's recovery to wipe the caches.

Thanks for the heads up. I wiped my cache and although I never had any issues with pinch zoom in the gallery, it completely fixed my soft key issue. They are now very responsive and register in the correct spot now!

No you wont lose any data/settings. I know because i just wiped cache partition on my N1 few minutes ago and all my stuff are still intact.

So if you do the OTA, does it wipe the caches for you?

I just did the Wipe Cache Partition, all my things are fine. Stock Froyo with stock recovery. I was hoping to get a better response from the buttons, I'd say it might be better. It's hard to tell, but it doesn't feel like I have to hunt for them as much now.
For anyone wanting to try it, once you get into the recovery menu you'll see it's save. There's a Wipe Data/Factory Reset option and then the last one is Wipe Cache. Just use the trackball to do a Wipe Cache. Mine took about 2.4 seconds to do this. I rebooted (which is nice and quick anymore) and everything seems fine.
I don't know what the cache is or what is in it. It may have just kicked a dog, I don't know.

I do this every few days.
I'm in the same boat, I have no clue if I'm kicking a dead dog or if it helps but I like to think it helps (LOL).
All personal data is intact. Nothing (I notice) is lost.

Hard Reset?! I don't think so...

Well, my phone has been freaking out a bit lately (Handcent not showing contact pics, Contacts not syncing with FB, FCes here and there, etc.) so I decided to start from scratch and reload everything. I tried all kind of resets (CLEAR STORAGE in FastBoot, Wipe Data, MSL Reset, etc.) and every time my phone loads up, Fresh 3.1.0.1 is already installed with all the apps I had. I understand Fresh being there, but why are all my apps staying?! Because of this, all the problems I've been facing seem to be staying as well.
This is really getting annoying. Anyone recommend a more aggressive alternative to clearing out as much as possible?! I have TB prepared to restore my apps already. The rest can be synced so I don't care.
Thanks in advance...
put the engineering hboot from toast's part 2 on your sdcard and run it, it will wipe everything
Although I don't know why wiping everything from your recovery wont do the job.. I've heard Clockwork doesn't always wipe completely but I've never had an issue with ra's recovery
I have already done that and tried CLEAR STORAGE without any luck. The third-party apps still remain. WTF! Makes no sense...
what recovery are you using? Clockwork or Amon

And from the recovery menu selecting "wipe data/factory reset" does nothing?
It wipes everything but the apps. The settings, scenes, etc are all gone. But the apps are still there. And so are the conflicts I was getting.
ahh.. is your sdcard partitioned??
If so then wipe ext also

How to PROPERLY Flash a ROM

Since I have seen alot of individuals within ROM threads stating things such as, "Your ROM bricked my phone." or "I can't get your new ROM to install." decided to make this guide. Hopefully it will solve this issue and help educate people.
What not flasing correctly can do:
1. Cause your phone not to boot
2. Cause Force closes and issues
3. POSSIBLY Brick your phone (though I have not seen an Eris Brick yet)
We must also remember that:
1. The devs of these ROMs are NOT responsible for any damage to your phone
2. The devs spend alot of time with testing to make sure the ROM works.
3. A ROM will NOT always flash over a previous ROM
OK.. So onto the main topic..
assuming you are rooted and using AMON's Recovery. I suggest AMON's because Clockwork has had recent issues. Big thanks to AMON for this!
How to install a ROM properly:
1. Boot into recovery ( with either reboot to recovery option or powerdown and then holding volume up and power )
2. Goto Backup/Restore and do a NAND Back-Up
3. Do a data/factory wipe ( NOTE: if the dev says you can flash over an old version you dont NEED to do this, but if you don't do this and the ROM is not booting then I suggest you restart this process [minus the back-up] and do a data/factory wipe)
4. Do a Dalvik Wipe... 3 times (ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do this)
5. Flash ROM
6. Reboot and Wait ( after a Dalvik wipe and flashing ROMs first boot can take 3+ minutes to load... BE PATIENT )
More to Come...
If you could, please explain what a Dalvik flash does. Thanks in adavnce, and thanks for this thread. I've never had any issues flashing, but it's nice to see someone explain the basics....

"Dalvik cache is a program cache area for the program Dalvik. Dalvik is a java based virtual machine that is the bases for running your programs (the ones that have the .apk extension). In order to make access times faster (because there's not JIT (just in time) compiler installed by default), the Dalvik-cache is the result of Dalvik doing a optimization of the running program." - Taken From Android forums
Basically it analyzes the phone before it boots. Then it sees what apps you have and will use and assigns cache to them. This way they will load quickly and properly.
When you flash a new ROM apps can change, or if you do a data/factory reset those apps are gone. SO wiping the Dalvik allows it to rebuild itself for what YOU are using.
This is also good to do after cleaning out or removing many unused apps from the phone. I usually do it once a week AT LEAST.
With the exception of a 2.1 ROM running apps2sd on an ext partition, is there really any point to wipe Dalvik if you have just done a wipe data/factory reset (which also wipes Dalvik cache)? And what exactly is the point of wiping Dalvik three times - why is once not enough? Is there something wrong with Amon Recovery which prevents a full Dalvik wipe unless you do it more than once?
It certainly doesn't hurt to wipe Dalvik after a wipe data/factory reset, but it should be already wiped.
I'm still fairly new, but I've flashed quite a bit. I didn't know to wipe dalvik x3. that's an interesting bit of info. Any reason why? Thanks

I believe the reason is that sometimes even after a wipe people have reported residual data in the cache, I personally don't do it three times but I do a wipe, dalvik, dalvik, wipe.
Its not going to hurt anything and it gives me piece of mind.

cool. Thanks for the good info.
x3? I do once before and once after. Frankly once before has been enough for me... though I suppose being safe has never hurt.
If the dalvik cache still won't clear after 3 times you can piss on your phone. That seems to really help.
in most cases once is enough but like I said, it's not likely to hurt anything to give it a couple of wipes to make sure all the junk data is cleared.
Let me put it this way...
I wont use a public toilet just by seeing it is clean... ill clean it like twice ...
This is why I dalvik 3 times lol

It would be interesting for someone like Amon to comment on the need to wipe data or recovery more than one time. In my opinion, once is enough. I'm 100% confident than wipes #2, #3, and so on are wiping blank space...

At the risk sounding like an idiot, I must ask this:
You mention wiping the Dalvik once a week. When you do this wipe, do you replace it (flash) something over it? Or can you simply wipe then reboot.

Yep, just wipe and boot. After wiping dalvik, it will redo your app tree or configuration if you will, just clears all the current info and rebuilds it fresh.
Great thread, people still need it I guess

[Q] Back to factory setting, no trash file left?

Hai all, I'm new to iconia. I've been flashing a custom ROM, a Taboonay ROM, great ROM.
I'm curious about get the original setup like a brand new iconia, without any trash folder after I restored my stock ROM. Tried with hitting the reset button, but it didn't work at all, still got the titanium backup folder and documents..is there anyway i could do to make it clean like i bought from the shop?
Thank you for your response..
hhmmmm
I may be missing a step here, but...
Boot into cwm
Clear user data, cache, dalvik, battery cache
Flash stock rom using cwm
Clear user data, cache, dalvik, battery cache
Someone please correct me if I am missing something here
Works for me. Have done so a few times.

There is a thread in the Dec section that talks about during entering recovery switching the orientation rocker.and also a thread of putting a blank file landed something then flashing that as well.both of these or one might be related to your issue.
Good luck.I just remember reading those threads.have not tried either as no need to.

Especially step #5 where it formatted the boot, system, and data:

[Q] Phone Constantly Locks - Which Service is Responsible?

I used Titanium Backup to uninstall certain packages (not before backing them up, of course) and it seems that I uninstalled too much... Whenever I start certain applications, the phone immediately blanks - and locks.
I have to press the power button 1-2 times before the screen unlock allows me to seep my finger. And it doesn't always succeed in retaining the screen: too often, it will immediately blank and lock again.
Example of applications that make the phone lock: Titanium Backup.
Example of applications that don't blank the phone: Dialer.
I started restoring some of the packages I uninstalled yesterday with the hope that this will fix the problem. So far I tried restoring:
- hiddenmenus
- sns
- Dialer 2.2.2
-setup wizard
- syncMLsvc
But without much success yet.
Any idea which service or package are responsible for correct behavior of the phone?
UPDATE 2: I gave up and decided to flash the EC07-Nuckin-1 ROM. I repeated the entire procedure detailed here and the phone boots fine, but the problem persists - in addition to the fact that the soft menu buttons now disappeared (replaced by faint color dots - LED-like).
How could this happen? Is it possible that my phone contracted an Android virus? (it appears that the problem started immediately after installing Stay Awake from the Android Market.
OK, this is becoming insane: I did a factory reset, re-installed ec07-clean, and not only the problem persists, the settings, home, back and search buttons no longer work!
Not to mention that my account details (and everything else) are still there, even after the factory reset...
And Market won't even start.
How is this possible?
What do I do to simply start from scratch, wiping out everything and all history (except for the SD card)?

I'm not really interested in 2.1. I just don't understand why a total re-install of ec07clean.zip + ec07.tar + update.zip won't restore everything to "brand new condition". Surely there is a way to tell the phone to "forget all history". But what is it?
In the meanwhile, I managed to make the Settings (leftmost) button work, by manually restoring SDM from Titanium Backup.
Android Market now starts. But the SCREEN OFF problem persists. I am now beginning to believe that Stay Awake actually caused a permanent damage.

I understand that they aren't 100% and I am OK with that. All I want is bring the phone to that pristine state it was right after I upgraded it from DL17 to ec07clean.zip.

I even tried the built in stock recovery 2e to do "factory restore". Didn't help.
Why doesn't it even delete my account information? This is weird.

I tried this at least 4 times. It doesn't get rid of anything. That's really puzzling.
In the meanwhile, I managed to restore my phone to a usable state (i.e. get rid of the original screen-off problem). Here is how I did it:
Settings > Display Settings > Power saving mode: UNCHECK (was checked)
Settings > Display Settings > Screen timeout: 1 minute (non was selected!)
I bet this was some remanent of that Stay Awake app.
Now, I lost quite a few productivity hours due to this. But at least now I know that this phone will always be mine, because in this particular phone, "Factory data reset" simply doesn't work.
Have you thought about using a different version of clockwork for flashing and wiping? That usually helps or perhaps stock recovery even

True reboot? Without cached apps

Hey everyone.
So, as every Android I've ever had.. Sometime the device needs a reboot... The battery goes out faster then it should, stuff runs a bit slower and i reboot gives me a clean start.
Here, a reboot does not do that, everything is still open on recent apps as if i didn't reboot at all .. What is the solution for this?
One thing you can do, if you have a custom recovery installed is first, close all open apps, reboot into recovery and delete Cache and Dalvik Cache... then reboot, let it do it's thing... you're as refreshed as you can get without wiping entirely and starting over.

I've done this method a few times... I usually once I do a full fresh new rom setup will go through and setup everything, tweak it all up nice, remove things I don't want, etc... and when I'm 100% operational... I'll go to recovery, wipe the cache and dalvik, make a nandroid backup and boot back up. I run into less problems it feels like this way.
I just swipe them all away then reboot, its a pain but since I want to use android pay its something i have to live with.
