Does it have to stick out like that? - EVO 4G General

I really couldn't be happier with my EVO(upgrading from a G1 and T-Mobile's less than impressive data network), but it does have it's flaws. None of which would ever keep me from buying one. Probably my biggest complaint is the styling of the rear camera. It just sticks out way too far in my opinion. It wouldn't be so bad if the actual lens cover was recessed a bit more. I really didnt want thicken the phone up with a plastic or sillicone case. I'm wondering if adding something to the bezel like a washer of some sort, would obstruct the camera when taking video or pictures. Just something I thought I'd throw out there.

that's what she said.
(sorry)

Yeah that sounds good!....LOL..what?

There isn't much to say about it to be honest. This is how the Evo was designed and I doubt HTC will make any changes to future models. You know it sticks out like this so best thing you can do is either place it on a delicate surface or just have it with the kickstand on.

The camera on the HTC/Google Nexus One sticks out the same way. On both phones, the speakerphone speaker is right next to the camera lens. My theory for the Nexus One was that they did this intentionally so that the camera bezel would also serve as a way to elevate the speaker a little bit off the desktop to keep it from being muffled sounding when laid directly on the desk. Seems to be same with the EVO.
The only other reason would be they just couldn't get the optics on such a big lens into any thinner a space and rather than thicken the whole phone they just let it stick out. THIN IS IN these days.

I agree, after my G1, thin is a welcomed feature. I guess nothing's perfect. I'm just glad I never got an iPhone.

I've got every model of the iPhone, including the iP4 -it's an impressive piece of hardware, the screen is absolutely gorgeous, really. There's just something about it that's so crisp and easy on the eyes. I still prefer the bigger screens of the N1 and EVO. A 4" iPhone screen would probably be the best thing you could own. Apple screwed up, in my opinion, sticking with the 3.5" screen
re: thin, the new iPhone is too thin for my big hands. It's not comfortable to hold because of its thin form factor with squared edges.
The camera on it takes amazing pictures, right off the camera, they look much better color-wise than the EVO's, but I imagine you could tweak the EVO's pics with photoshop or the like. You have to give Apple credit for getting such a nice camera into such a thin package - at least there's no nipple on the back of the phone.
Software-wise, Android just blows away the iPhone OS in every way. No comparison. Putting up with a nipple on the back of the phone is a small price to pay for all the Android goodness that comes with the EVO and it's like.

well said. the iPhone is an amazing piece of hardware. but the screen is too small (although i didn't think so before I owned the EVO). and the android o/s does blow it out of the water, at least for us power users/phone dorks. iOS is still better for noobs, and probably always will be.

How thick is the EVO going to be?

Just wondering how thick it's going to be compared to the Iphone.
My friend keeps saying my Hero's clunky cause it half a milimeter thicker than his sh!t iphone.
Yes, he's jealous my LWP's
It's still .03 inches thicker than the iPhone 3GS.
Here is a site to compare:
http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/HTC-EVO-4G-phone-size-compare-pc_4382.html
Your friend can feel the difference of .5mm? hmm makes me wonder what else he can feel that small? LOL
Sounds like some kind of envy...
Anywho...Of you have held a phone in a slider case like an INcase of Casecrown slider case then you will get a sense of what it would feel like. Go to Tomobile and hold an HTC HD2 and then think of a rounder back. It's not much difference. I think it the larger back will actually give it a better feel.

I had a flexishield on my hero, and he though that was the actual phone, and then we laid them side by side without cases, and kept running his finger a long it. he wouldn't settle that they both where about the same.
Let alone to say he thinks that the iPhone has a better processor than the N1.

my apple friends are soo annoying sometimes and they dont even own iphones >_< ooh all these companys are copying apple, apple was the first, the nexus one is copying the shape of the iphone and the look, they revolutionized it bla bla bla
my nexus one has a faster, better looking, they werent the first touch screen and even if they were Ford was the first car but an Audi is a million times better, if anything iphone is copying everyother phone out there by adding multi tasking, copy paste, video camera, and compass while other phones had that for years
i dont hate the iphone i like it, its a nice device with a great appstore, but the iphone owners can be a bunch of arrogant douche bags >/

First Thoughts...

What's the first thought that went through your head, not a series, just the first thing upon holding it in your hand.
mine was 'HOLY **** THAT'S HUGE!'
Same here. It's a BIG phone. Almost too big.
Ditto. The sheer size of it was what shocked me. The screen size alone is the same size as my whole Hero.
I wasnt shocked due to the fact that i had an HD2 for a while....its pretty much the same dimensions. I was more impressed with Android (my 1st Android device ).
My only gripe is that, where i rest my ear while on the phone is uncomfortable,....trying to figure a solution to it now.
Yeah, I like a smart PHONE, the operative word being phone. I love extra capabilities, but in the end it is a phone. The Hero fits nicely on my hip (with the seidio case and holster). The EVO may feel huge on my hip. It's more like a multi-function device. Hoever, the sheer power of it may make me consider upgrading at some point.
I tell you this. This phone is stretching my pockets.
Are many of you oompa loompas? It's not that much bigger than the Iphone. Taller but not that much wider.
ya seriously its really not that big..its the same height as my nexus one and quarter inch wider fits perfectly in my pocket

No, are you a giant? For my personal taste even the iPhone is a little big. So saying it's not much bigger than the iPhone doesn't change my opinion.
It fits just fine in my jean pocket also. After seeing the seido innocase + belt clip on a evo at BB when I got mine I had to get it. On my belt it really wasnt that much more then my current HTC Hermes that I've had before.
I was concerned about the size of the phone also but its all good now..The only issue i have really is the width of the phone sometimes makes it difficult for one hand operation. Man I love this screen! I couldn't see myself going any bigger screen wise though.

If not the Nexus S, what will it be?

I can hold it until Q1 of 2011. If Nexus S isn't worth replacing my Nexus One, what do you think will it be?
I won't be buying the S, even if I was up for an upgrade. No notification LEDs, no external SD card support, no significant hardware upgrades.
I'll wait and see what the dual core world has in store for us in the near future. I do like the LG Star a lot.
Also, for all those in the market, I'd at least wait until CES in January before making any decisions.
Unless you can't wait.

I never really paid much attention to the LG Star, but now since I keep hearing it being mentioned, I did a quick Google search.
It definitely destroys the NS it seems in terms of hardware..
boring device, I was expecting at least a keyboard, I might jump to sprint and get the EVO, this is my desired device so far:
-qwerty keyboard
-Call End hardware buttons, front hardware butons for home back and menu
-4" screen
I'm holding out for something made by HTC... Dual core with a decent gpu... Gingerbread or better.. no keyboard needed... a decent external speaker.. and 4"+ display with a better resolution than wvga.. hdmi out .. 4g etc..
i can wait... my N1 is more than adequate for the time being
Well, I plan to stay on Tmobile so I guess Im going to keep waiting as I agree with many others, The S is not a big enough improvement over the Original.
On Tmo as well with N1.
I'm thinking of grabbing up a MT4G for now, bc I'm looking for a new device. The Nexus One is an awesome device, it's just that as a year approches, I need something new. The MT4G is will be a great interim phone until something with:
Dual Core
4+" AMOLED/SLCD
768MB+ RAM
2.3 Stock
HSPA+ support
and why not throw a front facing camera just so people can't hate on it.
Oh and made my HTC!

If this is true and if it is available outside of Russia, then NexusS with LCD looks to me like the interesting option again. Even despite of boring amorphous rounded shape and cheap plasticky feel.
I simply hate the grainy looks and pentile artefacts of the current SAMOLED generation.
Possibly the PlayStation phone. Battery life would have to be killer.

I have to agree, other than the really nice exterior of the N1, nothing else is really that great. The speakers are just HORRIBLE - and the screen is just unbelievable. I am happy to have some plastic to be honest if it means a very good screen and speakers.

Funny this.
That "unbelievable" AMOLED screen is actually produced by the same Samsung and was rawed as the ultimate and absolutely gorgeous AMOLED, the final answer to all the OLED problems. Then couple of months later came Super-Amoled and it is the same story once again.
Just wait for Ultra-Amoled and all the forums around the world will immediately explode with comments stating, that those S-Amoleds are just plain horrible

It may not happen at all, but it's a pretty widespread and well known N1 issue.
Mine has just started to get pretty bad and I got mine in January.
Got a G1, because it was supported by the google and the community, got a Nexus 1 for the same reasons. I will not be getting the NS, and will wait til whatever google declares as the successor to that.
It will easily be 12 months away, but I think I can manage with the N1 until then.

LG Star looks interesting, but doesn't LG produce low class phones ? I hope it will have vanilla Android without some custom LG UI.

I for one think the phone looks great!

The phone isn't going to win any aesthetic prizes but it looks like very post iPhone mobile out there, nothing hideously ugly but nothing amazing. It's just a massive 4.8 inch OLED screen which is amazing to look at that you aren't going to be looking at the rest of the phone.
All this pentile complaints are unfounded, most of the people complaining weren't at the event so don't know what it looks like in person. Wait till the phone is in stores and then make your decision, however I really doubt at 306PPI and 720 resolution that you'll see a difference side by side with the GS2, unless you try and find a fault.
Comes with the CPU that we expected and has benchmarked well already, has a GPU that I was disappointed with at first but also has benchmarked better than anything else out there atm. 8MP camera is the norm, it isn't all about MPs anyways, I'm much more interested to see if the pink spot in the camera has gone and if the lag gone from the GS2 as well. So I'm not disappointed with the hardware at all, it looks like it'll be the fastest and have a good enough camera.
Sorry for admitting this but I think Touchwiz is better than stock Android. I tried to go from Touchwiz back to stock GB on the GS2 as everyone said it was crap and I couldn't, it had much better features. Looking at Samsungs new updates to it for ICS, it just looks amazing and much better than stock ICS, which I thought was a major disappointment. S Voice shuts up the Apple fanbois and the feature I'm excited for is the Picture in Picture stuff, that looks worth it alone for me. I dunno who Samsung have hired to make Touchwiz good since the GS2 but they should be paying them more lol.
I just don't see how people complain about the phone, what do they expect? Yeah the phone is made out of plastic, have you ever owned an iPhone 4? If you drop it the back shatters and the metal always gets dented or scuffed, I used to own one before the GS2. I personally think Plastic is a much better material for a device you will probably drop and most people get an iPhone and put a cheap plastic cover on it and never see the phone under it either. So that makes the phone look worse and makes it much bigger, it probably gets dirt under it and scratches the phone anyways. I dropped my GS2 many times and it never shattered or broke, if the back cover broke then just buy another one, plastic is cheap to replace!
The other great thing is it has a micro sd slot and removable battery, which are features you'd all be moaning are gone if they tried to make the phone out of another material. All these other phones are made Unibody to make them feel more sturdy and yet they lack what people on these forums want.
I don't get the complaining, I'm going to see it in a store and if I like it in person then buy one. I think it looks great and what I expected from the GS3. All the leaks too didn't big the phone up to being this mad crazy super phone that changes the world or whatever. So I don't see what people were expecting...
I have ur same opinion, totally agree
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Same opinion also.
Its the iPhone effect as I call it - Everyone will always find something to moan about but will still end up buying one and loving it. It will sell in the millions regardless.
Pretty much agree. I think the phone looks pretty decent, then again the whole zen theming is kinda my thing anyway, so I might be kinda biased. Also I really don't understand whats the problem with the homekey, I actually MUCH prefer having a real homekey than onscreen buttons... They take up screen space cause burn in and I hit them by accident ALL THE TIME.
The screen is a bit of a letdown but I think AMOLED HD+ is just not ready yet and with that resolution pentile isn't that much of a problem. Also once you go AMOLED you can never go back, those washed out blacks on an LCD are just unaccaptable for me..
People were expecting WAY too much. If they really did use a ceramic body people would complain about the pricing because it would be a hell lot more expensive. The hardware in this phone is very good ,zero shutter lag and the improved camera software are really great and some of the gimmicks look really practical (I can see me use popup play all the time). Oh and btw. with the tiny camera sensors in smartphones image quality will actually get worse by bumping up the Megapixel count, but I guess people will never understand that..
TouchWiz is not the most beautiful launcher out there, but it is one of the smoothest (the new version looks even smoother) and I find alot more appealing than Sense. Sense is actually one of the reasons I'd never get a HOX along with the poor unreplacable battery and the lack of an mircrosd card slot.
Once it hits the shelves I'm sure people will stop complaining and see what a nice device samsung has made here. It is not a revolutionary update but it is a pretty good update and I will use it until the next S phone comes out or if the other companies will come to their senses and give us back microsd card slots and removable batteries.
Same here, personally I love the look, what were HTC thinking with the no SD or replaceable battery.
What happens in a year or so when all the batteries start falling over!
I think this version of Touchwiz looks the best personally and I love the new icon style, it feels much more like Ubuntu or something.
The features in Touchwiz though just make it much better than stock ICS, that is if they work...
Yep, i'm bored of the iphone look and welcome change.
Well said folks and i agree totally, look forward to getting this phone
Can't agree more. The pebble blue looks great. The only thing I still worry is the battery life. I hope it is better than gs2 with the 2000 mah battery. I have been spoiled.

I think it looks great and possibly even better when you get it in your hands. And it's a distinct samsung design. They have a good brand and it's time to trust in it, I think.
I for one did not like the design one bit when I first saw it, but then it kind of grew on me, and I've now pre-ordered two. The whole "designed for humans" slogan didn't make much sense to me, but after actually taking the time to investigate the shape of the sgs3 up close, it dawned on me just how comfortable the thing will be in your hands. The iPhone 4/4S is in my opinion absolutely horrible when it comes to ergonomics, and the SGS2 does not win any prizes in that category either, and now Samsung has designed an ergonomically sensible phone that will fit into your hand perfectly, and thus has been designed with human use in mind. Instead of just having something pretty to look at, like the post 3GS iPhones have been, we now have something that'll be comfortable to handle and hold for long periods of time.
I for one can't wait to get my hands on my new phones!
Will buying depending on when its released for us. I do hope a Bigger battery comes out around release with it being a slim 2700 or even 3000 would be amazing. Add a little bit to the phone and its fine.
I think it looks ok.. Nothing really to dislike. I would say the Samsung widgets could do with some attention. The widgets on my sgs2 are inconsistent. Look at the agenda widget next to the clock. It looks like they have been downloaded from different developers. If they had made the widgets look consistent that would be an improvement. Look at sense for example. The widgets are slick.
The weather widget on the sgs3 is ugly and won't really fit with many wallpapers.
I find this quote applicable:
The take-home message: People don't like change. The Galaxy S III represents a departure from the design aesthetic the S-line has carried on for the last two years. Instead of more of the same, Samsung opted to continue along the design route it forged with the Galaxy Nexus. And guess what? It's welcomed. Personally, I'm tired of the rectangular phones.
...Samsung didn't cater to the sheep-mentality. Earlier I said, it met all my expectations. I was wrong. It went beyond expectation. Samsung delivered gave the world a stand-out [completely different] device....The trust that Mr. Savov indicates is being lost is untrue. The opposite is valid: Samsung continues to build trust among it's faithful, while earning and winning the trust of newcomers by pushing the boundaries in its latest flagship. Like most outrageously designed products (Bangle's BMW designs come to mind), at first, they startle, but over time, you come to appreciate how far-reaching the design perspective was. Samsung is looking ahead to what we will understand to love, once we dispense with the "sheepish" attitude that drawn to the same old rectangular slab that employs the same old tired heuristic.

Which is not to say I agree with him on the S3's "beauty" and "falling in love", but that a lot of the reactionary crap spouted here was just because people hate change. The same thing happens everytime facebook makes a major UI change, then people get used to it. Given this, there is a minor irony in that "sheep" thing.
I honestly don't know why there is so much backlash on the design. It looks great!
The ugliest phone this generation has got to be the Nokia Lumia series.
1. rear flash and speakers. way too exposed
2. not a big deal but it does bother me. just make it smaller.
3. home button. if they kept curve on both sides the same it would look like the shape of the phone, it would look nicer.
4. curves too much and looks like the top part is also smaller...should be the other way around if you want to save the phone from dropping.
5. size. for people who wants a bigger screen. that's where the Note comes in. but for a phone to use with one handedly and with the thumb. it say it's too big for the majority.
might change my mind later down the road, who knows.
prob still get it, just to toy around and its newer but not for full price.
The front is very identical to Nexus devices which I like, but the back is quite metrosexual, they should have given its some pattern, which would help with grip too. I guess they'll be some custom back cover for it. It would have looked nicer with the curved body.
I just bought a Nexus instead, so if anyone asked me what it is, I'll say its the new SIII: http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/2707/nexuss3k.jpg
Will wait till Christmas and get myself a global SIII when it lowered price after the American versions are released. Hopefully the price lowered as fast of a rate as the Nexus, by $350 after six months, but unlikely this time as quadcore is still new and S series is popular.
Don't forget, there were quite a few complaints about the S2 when it came out.
Same exact comparisons were made against the sensation
I do like most of the external design except for the rear battery cover. Maybe someone would make a nice replacement cover that's less slippery
I disagree with the op,
I think this phone will indeed win in the looks department. Like i said before I was too overhyped initially. Expecting it to be made with T1000 metal with Phasers shooting out the side. Now, I can see that it's one of the most beautiful minimalist phones ever made. I think it will win in the aesthetic category.

Can't say I'm disappointed that it is plastic and not metal. He seemed to drone on about the plastic design. Sure plastic shells can scratch easily, but they stand up better over time than metal ones. I've had several devices metal and plastic, and metal always interferes with signal quality and when it bends, it doesn't bend back into place like plastic does. My TF201 looks terrible with all of its dents and scratches but my Evo 3D with its plastic back and only a little bit of metal around the edge is looking decent (except for the metal which is scratched and nicked.)
What is everyone's deal about plastic? A ceramic coating would have been interesting, but we have already seen the coating chipping off on one model of the HTC One series phones.
EDIT: Ok, so I see I wasn't the only person that found the way he complained about the keys and other nitpicking to be a bit biased and annoying.

What is everyone's deal about plastic? A ceramic coating would have been interesting, but we have already seen the coating chipping off on one model of the HTC One series phones.
EDIT: Ok, so I see I wasn't the only person that found the way he complained about the keys and other nitpicking to be a bit biased and annoying.

stay away from ceramic coating!!! good thing Samsung didnt go there.
I sent my 3d htc one s back for a refund and preordered the SGS3 for that reason alone!!
By the way, flimsy plastic? So what? You scratch it and buy a new one, the phone looks like new.
try to do that with an alloy-ceramic phone.... No chance!
Well,PhoneArena's reviews are really good,as long as you don't watch the videos.
Although...iPhone smooth?Nowadays the iPhone is Android smooth. With ICS my Desire HD is smoother than the iPhone 4 of a friend and rivals the 4S.My S2 rapes them both.

I'd have loved it to be HTC Sensation-style,where you can replace the whole housing apart from the screen in the form of a battery cover. That way you just don't give a rat's ass about scratches etc.
Very annoying. Love the phone. Plastic back is better for radio signal. Drop a plastic backed phone and you will get back a scratched but still very much working phone not like a glass backed device. Very easy to tell an I-Phone fan boy. Could not watch or listen to entire video due to the annoying Fan Boy.
Sent from my Rezound using Tapatalk 2.

phonearena is generally good as long as it wasn't reviewed by Ray S

This was John V or something.
Well, they are a really good site in fact. They may not have all the stuff Anandtech does, nor do they publish everything new instantly like SlashGear,Engagdet etc,but they do it all and do it well(Does that sound somehow...? ).I prefer them for my everyday mobile tech news reading.
EDIT:****,I must have my ears checked. He is Ray.John isn't the fanboy.I confused the voices and thought John was the annoying one.
