From you guys' experience, what's the most rated IM client on Android? I'd like to get one that is pretty good (or very good) for all the popular IMs.
I use Google's Talk. Low on resources. Obviously works well with Google.
I use Nimbuzz. Tried it for Gtalk but for some reason it stopped logging on properly and my Google contacts stopped coming up. It works best for me for Skype chats over wifi. A much quicker and cleaner client than Fring which I also tried.
I haven't tried AIM.
What do you guys recommend?
Ebuddy does, msn, yahoo, aim, gtalk, facebook icq etc all in one app. i find it very good
Also check out Palringo. Nice integration
ebuddy I think! using it now as we speak lol

I'm using Nimbuzz.. Its pretty cool I'll have to try out Parlingo and Ebuddy
Meebo anybody??
Using meebo right now seems fine to me
EBuddy is a bit more stylish

Cheers guys. I'm trying Ebuddy right now. One thing that I already like is the notifications are not annoying like another one I used which used it's own high pitched notification noise.
used meebo but switched to nimbuzz, cos it also has skype. otherwise meebo was ql.
I've been using MSN Droid for a week. It was pretty much ok, I liked the UI, it have all the usuall MSN options including avatar (it's missing "appear offline" feature only), but I noticed that it actually slows down my Desire (When I am in application and I press home button it takes at least 20 second to load my home screen, after that everything goes smoothly). It was enough annoyance for me so I decided to uninstall.
Now I am using eBuddy for several days and it seems very lightweight compared to MSN Droid. I really like integration of Facebook chat in it. Only feature that eBuddy is currently missing is personal avatar, but it might come with future update.
One particullar bug (or just something I haven't figured out yet) is that after I recieve message the phone indicator LED is not always blinking. Maybe someone else knows why on some messages the LED is blinking and not on the others?
Anyhow for the time being, eBuddy is my recommendation for you to try.
Cheers
Anyone know if it is possible to get the native android IM application working on the desire? The one that was ported from the g1 and modified to work on mobile internet/3g that is usually included on custom roms for the nexus one.
agile messenger and parlingo ar the best until now, at least from the one's that i've tested.
I like Im+ a lot, used it on my Windows Mobile X1 for a long time and bought it right away after switching to the Desire. Works great for me, unfortunately no Skype or Facebook as of now
Hi! My HTC Desire is broke so I had to use my Hero again. I decided to root it, and installed VillainROM 13. It works great, and is much faster than stock.
I only have one small problem with Facebook for HTC Sense. It works as expected when it comes to pulling information like birthdays and status updates from Facebook to the contacts I have linked with Facebook, but I can't get it to show the profile pictures. For example, if I add a new contact (test), and press up in the right corner to link it and then choose Facebook, my list of Facebook friends appears, but not their pictures! My GF used my Hero before, and it worked fine with stock ROM. It also worked fine with my Desire.
Is this a known bug, or something that is just affecting me? If it's only me, should I try to flash the ROM again?
Facebook-htc integration likely to blame - their integration is pretty poor to be honest

Seems unlikely. It worked well on stock ROM.
I had this issue when I was on stock 2.1, if u check the HTC sense Facebook page its a very common problem. It started working again of its own accord after a few weeks, during which time I contacted HTC who blamed Facebook, I contacted Facebook who blamed HTC
Also, whenever it has worked status and event updates are fine buy contact pics have never updated themselves for me rregardless of what Rom I've been on, they do on my gf's wildfire tho :/
Also if you changed you Facebook settings to use only secure login your phone will have none of it.
I'm on v13 n bar the pics its working for me (@the mo )

Hello.
Is there a way to link contacts to their Facebook accounts? I'd like to have the statuses and pictures from Facebook for my contacts visible when they call me or when I'm calling them?
Thanks!
What ROM are you using?
Currently stock, but I'm willing to change to a rom that is able to do this and isn't heavier or hungrier for more battery.

This seems to be very close to what I'm looking for. But does it show the status and picture when receiving a call? Only have my Desire HD here atm so can't test it now.

If you want to change ROM I'd suggest SS RLS5. It's available at MoDaCo. It has the Facebook Sync and it's Froyo so it should be quicker. The battery life is really good as well IMO.
is this possible without changing ROM?
i'd want this also, without changing ROM.
SS RLS5 does not show current Facebook status. It just shows photo.
ContApps failed me in this and seems like changing rom won't solve my problem. Any other solutions on getting this Senseish feature?
What I'd like to see a dev do is take the android source and one of the kernels (ScaryKernel stable preferably) and develop a ROM from the ground up.
Call waiting does not work properly in CM7 or another AOSP based ROM I tried.
GPS has problems fixing in that ROM as well. I believe Sense based ROM users don't have this problem.
What would be really cool is having a nice 2.3.5 ROM with ScaryStable kernel, Android 2.3.5, some, not all of the tweaks from CM7, apps included that are actually useful such as antutu benchmark, kernel manager, rom manager, super user, terminal emulator, speedtest.net, wifi analyzer, gps status, fasterfix stuff like that, HTC GPS drivers, and being able to update profile, and prl and being able to get to the ##code# menus from the dialer (basically need the HTC dialer for this I'm guessing which would also fix call waiting). That would be like the ultimate ROM in my opinion.
Thoughts? And yes, I'm actually thinking about taking this on as my own project if I have to even though I can't program to save my life.
What's a matter with call waiting on ASOP? I've never noticed anything messed up or anything different.....I have predominatly have had cm7 but also ran shiftdeck for awhile and call waiting has worked fine I believe....
I have read others having problems getting gps to get a fix but have never experienced the problem myself.....I know the solution has been to flash sense get a lock n then flash asop and from what I read gps is fixed after that....

Tap manage calls in CM7, tell me what happens.
As for GPS, I found a combination of resetting the GPS and downloading GPS assistance data with GPS status, and using faster fix and setting the proper ntp server while having wireless assistance on helps for a while. I'm still investigating exactly what needs to be done for GPS to to work properly.
I can honestly say I have never had a single problem with GPS on any cyanogen build but i never shut my GPS off I don't even know why It's on maybe for the weather so maybe that info could help someone maybe get a lock right before flashing and leaving GPS on might work but AOSP is fast has no bloat and is very customizable but I am a Sense guy so:
I think a Rom I would be 100% happy with as an all time Rom for right now it would have to be a Sense 3.0 Rom because I absolutely love it, with the HDR and panorama effects added to the camera, overclocked to 1.2 Ghz with a very light theme maybe like Rosie, status bar with no clock and notification area to be semi-trans black with white font a themed HTC_IME and dialer and a custom Glock LockRing that's all

The real question is how does your GPS work with wireless assistance turned off?
And Sense 3.0 is beautiful (mainly talking about the weather themed lock screen with the shortcuts) but I hate the way Sense 2 and 3 manage contacts and it's way too facebook integrated in general which is annoying.

I wouldn't know I don't use my GPS often and I leave it on the default settings and never have a problem even if I'm not on WiFi every time I have needed it, It's been solid and it don't kill my battery at all I get great battery life

I have to disagree. I love sense bc it has Facebook integration. I like how I set my contacts to their respective profile on my touch pro 2 with wm 6.5 synced with Google and never had to worry about it again. It puts a pic to your contacts and gives u a bday entry which is nice imo.
Now my gps sucks, I have to wait 5-10 mins to get a lock outside or in the car. And sense 2.3 doesn't have kernel source so its limited to the stock kernel.
My dream Rom is MikG, with x99 kernel. I used to love that kernel on 2.2

My dream Rom would be MikG With x99 or V8 kernel, AND Firerats due to that sucker helps save a lot of space.
My "dream" ROM on the Shift would have to be full blown Sense 3.0 with it running perfectly smooth WITHOUT overclocking. I would want the kernel for sbc and UV. And I would want google + integration added along with FB and twitter.
(Guess thats why its called a dream ROM )

Yeah full Sense 3 with no oc running that great is prolly extremely hard to do, I'm on a constant uphill battle with what I got going you know

To start out, it would look a LOT like CM7. Same launcher, same extras. NO Sense UI.
(for the record, I know that most of this is available, it just means installing a number of extra packages)
Add in all the google
T9 predictive input for the dialer
A nicer looking messaging app that doesn't fail every time you try to send a text longer than 1 message.
A few of the nice sound options from Sense UI, including having the ringer volume automatically reduce when the phone is picked up, automatically switching to speakerphone when you set the phone face-down during a call, and double-tapping the home key to see all your launcher pages at once.

A lot of the google apps are bloatware, please be more specific.

I never have this problem. Do you have the messaging app locked in memory?

1. Gmail, Voice, Talk, Maps, Latitude (yes, I know it's bad for battery AND privacy, but it's fun and I don't plan on committing crimes, cheating on my wife, lieing to my boss or ever being worth enough money to kidnap; so I don't care if people know where I am.), Navigation, and of course, Market.
2. I haven't made any changes to the built in messaging app of any kind, but I'm also running the latest nightly. Doesn't matter too much, since I've installed GoSMSpro.
3. Yes, I'm well aware that many of those features kill the battery. That's why I like CM7, and only want a small handful of the highly useful features from Sense.
well no matter which rom i try, i always end up installing launcher 7, so to have that already integrated would be nice for the drawer, and a rom that lets you use the volume bottoms to skip tracks in your music player ,

I know with both cm7 and cyclonic you can skip tracks with the volume rocker. Also with the mod you can on MIUI.

I want a thermal camera and nightvision on my dream rom lol
my dream rom would be CM7 with Sense Lock Screen 3.0. I know there's agile lockscreen, and to be honest it SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also rather fond of the calender widget on sense as well. but i can live with out. just the calender widget on CM7 sucks. just shows upcoming events i wanna see the whole calender.
