Microsd question (video playback) - Galaxy S I9000 General

For anyone that has a galaxy s, is there any difference between onboard memory and microSD in the time it takes to select a video & play it?

The internal memory will be faster. How much faster, I don't know.

Now that a few more people have the phone, can anyone comment? Thanks.

Well I have not tried playing any camera videos or movie files from the Galaxy's inbuilt sdcard but from the MicroSD they both play fine.
The card I use is a 16GB Sandisk Mobile Ultra Class 4

I have Sandisk ultra 16GB class 4, i made a test, I copied the same file "700mb" on the external and the internal and flushed the memory.
and use the "my file" app to select and play it.
it's the same speed as i can't tell the different.
maybe because the sandisk sd is fast in reading as the internal sd

Awesome, thanks.

MicroSD Question

Hi, sorry if this is a double post. I did look around but could not find much info.
I'm interested to know how well the new 16GB MicroSD cards work on the Xperia. Anyone using one of these? My main concern is that they all seem to only be class 2 atm. Is this too slow to run apps and my videos stored on it etc?
Should I wait till a class 4 16GB card comes out?
Thanks
Edit: I also noticed that SanDisk has a “Mobile Ultra” memory card range. Only up to 8GB though. Anyone using one of these? Is there a big difference in speeds?
i don't think it matters in a phone.
I ordered the eact same Mobile Ultra card today. Should be here saturday, so I will tell when I get it. But assuming it's Class 6 card, it should be fast. I wouldn't go with Class 2, since it's slow. But as Jabe says, it might not matter on the phone.
So as at now no one's using a 16GB yet?
Give me a week or 2. I'm planning on ordering the Sandisk one.
Sandisk Mobile Ultra is good, and it's what I am using for X1. Since it's class 6, the read/write speed is about 20/16 mb/s, which is much faster than class 2. If you wanna watch video storaged in card, this one is your first choice.

Note that the speed in the end is depending on the host itself. If the host is slow, even if you use class 6 memory card, it's not going to make any difference. Personally I believe the phone itself would be the bottleneck and not the memory card.
I know it's not totally relevant but just for reference, take a look at the link below. As you can see the speed of class 2 and 6 are pretty identical as it's limited by the host. This is even with a dedicated memory card reader. Compare the 2nd and 4th entries from the bottom.

If that's the case, what's the optimal speed supported by X1?
So anyone able to compare the 2 classes

I'm using a 16GB Class 2 at the moment. No probs with apps or music. But I have no videos on the card...
with normal sd cards the pdas were mostly not able to transfer as fast as the sd card supported
as the sd interface in onchip and not that fast
would like to see some tests if the same hold true with newer pda's and class X microSD cards
anyone able to follow this up yet?
I'm using a Sandisk 8gb Class 4 HC. No problems with speed or data read/write (on the phone itself).
Using the phone as a disk drive though (not activesync) is noticeably slower than using a USB adapter, *suggesting* the phone itself is the bottleneck?
I'm using a SanDisk 8GB Class II Card and I had no problems with photos, videos or music so far.
Don't think a Class 4 or 6 is worth the price in a mobile phone.
I got my 16GB Microsdhc today. And everything works. Sad thing is it only shows 15GB.
I find no difference in speed between my 8G class 6 and 16G class 2 (both from Sandisk)

it's 15G probably because of the way how "G" is being calculated. 16,000,000,000 = 16,000,000,000/(1024*1024*1024) = 14.9GB
im using a 8g class 4 card, music, apps and vids work great.
just a quick question, the x1 has a sd card limit of 32g, when a larger card comes out like the 128gb card that sandisk has said will come out, could windows mobile have a update so that it can read it or is limited to the reader hardware inside the x1
I have 2 cards: Sandisk 16GB Class 2 and Kingston 8GB class 4.
I use Sandisk in Xperia, and the speed is more than sufficient. It reaches 12-15 MB/s writing on USB adapter. Reading - it's no problem reaching even more. So it's ok, speed wise.
I don't think you would need more speed in Xperia )
There's no HD video recording option in there )
one can use pocket mechanics to benchmark the sdcard speed
if the results are lower i would suspect it show the bottleneck speed
of the sd interface of the qualcomm cpu in x1
I have a 16gb micro sdhc and some .avi videos lag (highish quality). Specifically, top gear season 12 episodes from finalgear.com. it might be the divx client though, Im using the WM 6 Pro version available on the divx website.

[Q] Playing movies off SD/microSD card

Hi -
Bit of a noob question, hope you can help!
If I copy a DVD with DVDCatalyst and then play if off an SD card (or micro SD card) then is the performance worse than if I copy the movie to the internal storage? Should I expect stutter and bad sync as I perceive
I ask because clearly I'm not going to have enough space for all my movies on internal storage and will need to use SD cards so should I expect to have to copy a movie locally onto internal storage temporarily prior to playing it, or will speed of access from SD card be OK? [I'm thinking of getting the 32GB Sandisk microSD card which I believe is class 2]
Many thanks in advance.
I have a 32gig class 4 card and have no problems with playback from the MicroSD card. But then again, I encode all my movies as MP4's. I'm not familiar with DVDCatalyst so not sure what the encoding specs are from it's output.
DVDCatalyst is MP4 also i *think*
out of interest which class 4 card do you use? I didn't think there were any class 4 microsds
Thx!

Sandisk is now doing their 32GB microSD card as a class 4, that's what I was able to pick up. I was trying to find a local brick and mortar with the Lexar 32GB w/ class 10 but they were all out.
bear in mind, the number in the class refers to the WRITE speed....class 10 will definately help to copy the files across, but the playback doesn't really require anything better than class 2 because your TF won't be able to play those ultra-high bitrate video anyway...
I've used a 16gb Toshiba class 4 to play a couple of test mp4 trailers 720p and they have been fine though I am expecting to receive a Lexar class 10 32gb card over the next couple of days as my main MicroSD card.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
Don't want to make a new thread...but what's the easiest way for me to convert my movies (DVDs) to a playable format on my TF...playable meaning it still looks good.
Thanks!

[Q] Which is the best SD card for Samsung galaxy Y for using link2sd without lag?

Hi,
I am a newbie . Got my first ever android (samsung galaxy Y 5360) the other day. Rooted it too . Found out my phone's got low internal storage memory. I want to increase my phone's internal memory by using link2sd (or any other better app if present) and loading apps from my microsd card. I am now trying to get a good sd card to do the needful.
What I wanted to know is which is the optimal sd card(not particular about brand) with its class number (4gb class 4, 8gb class 6, 16gb class 10, etc) that I can use so that I can get "the best performance" out of my "Galaxy Y."
I was going to go for a 16gb class 10 microsd card but upon using Google i saw in some places class 6 is better for small read writes like in the case of using link2sd app and that class 10 is better for transferring of big files (and making videos and stuff) and that there's going to be lag in class 10 cards of 16 gb and 32 gb, etc for my purpose. At some other places i saw that class 10 is always better no matter what. Or maybe i just misunderstood the whole thing.
For example for my above purpose, is an 8gb (or 16gb) class 6 card going to perform better than an 8gb(or 16gb) class 10 card
thank you
The higher the class the better the read/write speed
I had a 32gb class 10 and it worked fine - to be honest apart from transferring very large files (and fat32 doesn't support larger than 2gb file) you probably will not notice any difference

Who uses a microSD card in their note 4?

I am looking to get a microSD for storing my music and photos to use on my note 4. I heard that microSD cards can slow down the phone's performance, can you share your experiences with the microSD and note 4 lag? Thanks
I'm using a 64gb microSD on my N4. I'm not sure on the lagging issue coming from the use of microSD or what since been using the microSD at beginning of ownership. N4 upgraded to lollipop

i have been using it since i bought the device and havent had any problem about it.. it doesnt effect your general usage but it can make pics showing slower in gallery if you buy a slow card.
I am using 32GB class10 MicroSD card from beginning and never have issues.

I did experience few delays when I used a class 6 microSD that I found in my old phone. Make sure you use at least class 10.
I'm using a Samsung 64Gb PRO - haven't noticed any impact on phone performance. I store all my photos and media on it, and even large 16MP images load instantly in QuickPic.
128 gb SanDisk class 10 here. No lag what so ever...
/CK
I've been using mine with a 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 without a single problem.
Samsung 64gb card. No slowdowns due to it.

This is a bit of a loaded question.
Firstly, The speed and size of the memory card can impact the performance of the card. I use a 64GB Class 10 card and its around 90% full, i find that this does impact performance i do have lag when accessing certain folders.
The lag in my instance is caused with the fact i have over 3000 image files in folders/ subfolders and my app i use for gallery loves to thumbnail them all.
Games, and call recording etc result in next to no impact.
Scandisk 64gb class 10. Almost full, with a lot of music, pictures and documents. No lag at all.
i use a 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 from transcend
It doesn't cause any lag but i'm testing the phone without it, suspecting it may cause overheating, even though probability is very weak
I have a 32gb Sony high speed I got on Amazon for ten bucks. Works great!
128gig here. Sandisk.
32GB class 10 since day one. Never had any lag.
I've been using a 32GB Sandisk MicroSDCard in my N910C for over 2 weeks now and I haven't noticed any lag at all. I mainly use my microSDCard for media, documents and photo storage. That way I don't have to worry about my N910C's internal memory running out.
128Gb Samsung Card
I'm using a 64GB class 10 Sandisk ExtremePro that I bought on sale and had used in my previous phone- I've tried the phone without the card and the lag is still there so I'm assuming the card isn't the factor. I'm on lollipop btw.
128 gb Samsung class 10 here...
im using a Viking Man 64 GB Class10 UHS1 U3 microsd card

Can you save/edit photo on micro sd card?

I remember GS 7 can't edit photos you saved in micro sd card because of silly android permission issue, has this been resolved in GS 8?
Anyone know about this yet?
I am annoyed they are not providing a bigger sized internal memory phone TBH and I edit all my mobile photos directly on my S6 at present.
No real need for addtional memory card if they made bigger phone size.

64GB doesn't go as far as it once did.
I've had 64GB internal memory since 2014 with my Moto XT1225 and I'm to the point I can only make one TWRP backup at at time nowadays. I used to keep two or three while evaluating different ROMs. This phone has no microSD card slot.
My next phone will either have 128GB internal memory and/or microSD card.
But even 3 years ago, 32GB was just too small.

Well don't forget the S8 has a sd card slot too...
Things like music, pr0n, etc can go on that
Move music, video and all other larger files to the SD card. You can also integrate the SD card as part of the internal memory. I don't do this, but you could. I just have all my music, pics and larger files on my SD card. Always have. I went from the 64gb Note 7 to the 32gb S7E and I still have about 10 gb left on the internal on the S7E. I was using about 50 gb on my Note 7 internal but I wasn't fully utilizing the SD card because the N7 had a larger internal memory. Also don't forget to move over larger apps to SD card. I also do this to save space on the internal. 64gb is enough since we can use SD storage. I got two free 256 gb micro SD cards with my Note 7's, so I have the room. Even filling up the card with movies (use the Movie HD app, google it) I still have at least 50gb free on my SD card. That's with over 100 gb used of pics, music and misc files on my SD card already.
can we get back to the topic?
If we save camera to micro sd card, is it editable? is the permission issue gone

I haven't picked my S8+ from UPS yet, but I believe this issue is app dependent.
If the app you are using has the code written in, it will ask you to give it permission to write to the SD card when you start it up.
It has been this way for a while now, including the S7.
So, for example, I use Quick Pics for my gallery and it asks for the permission when I start it for the first time and access the SD card.
